"The position of the hotel is lovely and our twin room had a lovely view of the promenade gardens and the sea.The room was big and very bright but the decor was 1970 style. The shower flooded the bathroom window sill and the water was lukewarm despite the fact that the water in the wash basin was very hot.
The food was very strange, who thought crushed new potatoes mixed with sage and onion stuffing was appropriate to accompany baked cod which was served with an unrecognisable bright yellow sauce. The brocolli looked like it had been boiled for hours. The roast dinner should have been a safe bet but this was overcooked and the beef was tough. Most meals including breakfast were cold.
The appearence of the waiters left a lot to be desired.Breakfast one morning was served by a waiter in a uniform which can only be described as filthy,it was covered in food debri"

"On Sunday 5th April we went to the Golden Lion for luncyh - or tried to. 12.40pm ordered lunch in the lounge bar as none of us wanted a roast dinner in the dining room. At 1.10 still no sign of food and as the lounge bar was heaving I walked to the dining room to purchase 1 pint and half a shandy. Was dealt with in a surpercilious manner by a man in a suit behind the bar who pompously explained that this bar was for the dining room only (about 12 people were seated for dinner and not another soul to be seen). He suggested I went back to the lounge bar and waited to be served. I responded, do you really. He then relented and served my drinks. (I must add I was not in casual or beach wear). Meanwhile my elderly father was beginning to feel a bit faint from hunger and the other person in the party was diabetic, so at 1.15 I asked a waitress to kindly check on the order for our table number- no sign of even a starter at this point. Nobody came back to advise and I could see people who had arrived after us being served, so at 1.30 I quietly asked for a refund and this was given without argument by one of the very nice staff. We then went to Fishers of Hunstanton and had a lovely fresh piping hot lunch."

"Staff were attentive and 'on the ball'.
We had to book a time for our evening meals however this suited us as we could make sure we had a table. This enabled staff to stagger the meals and subsequently it was never too busy . The restaurant was quite cosy and intimate. The bar area was very welcoming.
Not a great choice of food but the four main course options were adequate and well presented. The options changed daily.
Room was a good size. We had asked for a sea view and this was delightful.
Mobile phone coverage was limited (had to go upstairs or outside).
Shops, bowling, entertainment and beach all within very short walking distance (just outside hotel).
We will definitely use this hotel again."

"We visited the restaurant for my mother's 70th birthday so did not stay overnight in the hotel. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we walked in, we had my 2 1/2 year old grandson with us and he too was welcomed, which is not always the case in some venues. Lovely surroundings. Very friendly waiting staff. Food was well presented and tasty. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel as a venue for a family meal or celebration."

"like other people on arrival at the golden lion was mystified by nasty reviews posted.have stayed in about fifteen shearings hotels over the years and can say this was the best.although whitby is still our favorite for location..The golden lion is very clean in all areas not just reception, the bedrooms and service to them were first class. The food was excellent with good choice and well cooked, the dining room was very clean & airy.As for the staff what a nice bunch of people reception very helpfull, waiters cheerful & eficient cleaners .Cannot understand previous comments everybody is entitled to thier opinion but these where vicious which was visibly hurtfull to manageress Zoe who her and her staff are running a very nice clean and happy hotel.I dont usually leave comments in the public domain but felt in this case it was needed and justified.yours krijuton."

A wonderful hotel

"Together with my husband and another couple, I have just returned from a three night stay at the Golden Lion Hotel in Hunstanton booked through Shearings self drive holidays.

I too had read the previous reviews and was rather anxious about what I would find.

However we were all absolutely delighted with every aspect of the hotel.

All the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.

The food was very well cooked and presented and the menu offered a good choice of dishes. The wine was reasonably priced and if you did not finish a bottle they would keep it for the next day's dinner.

The decor of both the dining room and the bedrooms was excellent and tasteful - it was obvious the hotel had recently been refurbished. My friends were on the second floor and had a reasonable room, but we were on the first floor and had a large room with a very large bathroom - with an excellent power shower - the windows from both rooms giving a fine view of the sea.

The hotel is very well positioned in Hunstanton being near to both the front and the shops and the bus station. There is a reasonably large car park at the front and side of the hotel.

We are certainly already planning a further visit and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone - just a word of warning however - there are no lifts so not suitable for anyone with extreme mobility problems."

"Ignore all the other reviews of this hotel. We were not looking forward to our visit after reading those reviews but they could not have been more wrong. This is now a Shearings Hotel and has obviously been fully refurbished. The staff were very friendly and hard working. Our en-suite room was clean and well furnished. Meals were fine and generous portions. The hotel is in a prime position and we found the resort quite delightful with lots of information available to visitors.
Overall a very pleasant break and we hope to return......."

Needs improving

"We stayed at this hotel which overlooks the coastline and green a while ago. The hotel was ok, poor service when we were there and the room was in need of sprucing up and redecoration. The room was directly above the main entrance which made it noisy, it was also very small and the bathroom was tiny. The window frames were ill-fitting and had huge chunks of paint peeling off them. The curtains were smelly and in need of dry cleaning.

As we were only there for the night we didn't bother complaining, however the restaurant service was poor, so we had to go out to a local pub.

Personally I'd recommend going down the coast and staying at the Liftboat Inn at Thornham (at the pub intself, not the coach house), rather than stay in Hunstanton as there is very little to do there and this hotel really wasn't up to scratch when we were there."

"The Golden Lion Hotel, is now a Washearings Hotel, unfortunately it is not of the same standard of most Washearings Hotels. Yes there has been some refurbishment, all the open to public reception rooms look fantastic. Behind the scenes in the bedrooms and bathrooms the same standard does not apply.

The restaurant looks lovely, with beautiful sea views. Unfortunately the food, although described as sourced locally, at best can be described as disgusting. Repetitive menus within a week, baring no resemblance to the printed menu. Disgusting dried up brown vegetables, not suited to dish served. Would you like fish served with a mound of mayonnaise and roasted parsnip and potato with brown dried up cauliflower and cabbage?no neither did I and I eat most things. "
