18 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"We live in Ryde and eat at the Ryde Castle more often after the fire and rebuilding. At first, the food was much improved and the staff enthusiastic and helpful. However, the standard has become variable from day to day, with the result we visit less and less. Problems include occasional lengthy waits for counter service, cold, stale or overcooked food and a reluctance of staff to correct things. Some meal combinations are quite strange, although meals can be varied if you ask or insist. On good days meals are well cooked and well presented and I have to put this down to competent kitchen staff. When the restaurant manager is busy elsewhere, problems arise and appear un managed . The location is good and convenient for Ryde, ferries, buses and the limited train service. "

warm welcome at ryde castle
"We arrived at the Ryde Castle after booking first, then reading reviews after, with trepadation. We needn't have worried, the Hotel was very clean, welcoming, there is no lift and immediately our cases were taken upstairs by friendly staff. Our room was massive, with four poster bed and three queen anne chairs not to mention settee. We ate in the restaurant on two occasions, the food was excellent and very good value for money. We had breakfast in our room every morning from an extensive menue which the staff seemed very happy to bring up the flight of stairs daily, this was because husband has walking problems, the staff couldn't have been nicer, from the friendly chef to the Manager and family. The restaurant was very modern the bar very welcoming and bar snacks very good.,ok maybe a few areas on landings could be spruced up a little more, but all in all this Hotel comes well recommended"

Everything I could of wanted
"I stayed at the Ryde Castle for a few nights over a weekend in July 2009 with my partner and my Mum and Dad stayed in a room too. Our room was huge with a spare bed in an adjoining room - excellent for a family to get some privacy, however we had no need for it. The staff were lovely and, even at the busiest of times, were polite and tentative. The first night there was a jazz band (not really our taste!) and the 2nd night was a wedding. Even with these two loud events we had no problem sleeping. The breakfast was plentiful and stocked up frequently each morning. I will be visiting family in Ryde in the future and will definitely be using this hotel again. I gave a 9 out of 10 as there were small jobs needing done around the building such as light bulbs needing replacing, small areas of paintwork needing touched in. This made no difference to the quality of our stay but others may find it off putting in certain circumstances."

"The location of this hotel is superb, right on the seafront offering fantastic views across the Solent. The room was clean and very spacious and the staff were very friendly. Unfortunately what let the hotel down was the brasserie where they served breakfast and evening meal if chosen. The service was very poor, we waited almost an hour for our starter. The menu itself was limited being told that a lot of what was on it was unavailable. The food when it did come was average. Again at breakfast there was only one waitress and although we were the only people in the restaurant we weren't acknowledged for nearly 15 minutes the one morning. It was a shame as this did reflect poorly on the overall impression."

"we have just returned from the isle of wight and allthough Ryde castle doesn't live up to the magical impression you have in the mind, i must say it was very clean and tidy and the staff were lovely. We ate in the restraurant several time's and the food was very good, it is a very relaxed place to go"

"On my first visit to the Isle of Wight I stayed at the Ryde Castle Hotel. It was wonderful, the food was superb and the location of the Hotel was second to none. The summer of 2006 was one of the hottest for a long time and i was very lucky to be there at that time. The hotel overlooked the Esplanade and on waking each morning I opened my bedroom window and looked onto the beautiful beach just beyond the Esplanade. The beach was 7 miles along and very well looked after - it was spotlessly clean. Just 1 minute away was the Hydrofoil which goes across the water in minutes to Southampton. In the evenings I had my meal sitting outside - there was a small raised brasserie off the dining room and it was a real pleasure to just sit there with a lovely meal and watch the world going by. I was there only for a week but the memory of a fabulous holiday will live with me forever. I have nothing but praise for the Isle of Wight in general and would love to return to the Ryde Castle for 2 weeks !!!!! I hope everyone enjoys this review and visits the Ryde Castle (and the Isle of Wight) to see for themselves. Ann Rossette "

Faulty Towers - Not even funny
"I Booked this hotel for 2 nights and if I had time I would have checked out after the first night. I Checked in on Tuesday evening at 6.30pm first impressions nice building, good location and friendly check in staff. No lift and no offer of help with luggage. The room had seaview was reasonable size but not clean, numerous cobwebs and broken towel rail just left. The beds have really had it, and with 3 pillows equivallent to one anywhere else I think you are getting the picture. That evening it took 45 mins to get our food order taken after me following the waiter and giving him the details as no attempt was made to take it. We then waited another 45mins the fish and chips was very good. Unfortunately the breakfasts were not good the fruit salad was tasteless and the cooked breakfast was running with water and the scrambled eggs were like rubber. I complained to the manager about this being one of the worst stay's I have expericenced he was apologetic and said the hotel is going to have a re-vamp in April and would offer a discount to stay then, not really an appealing option after this stay."

Value for money
"Was a little apprehensive after reading other reviews of this hotel, but was pleasantly surprised after we chose this place for it's location. It is very well situated for all the local attractions and exploring the area. Very close to the pedestrian hovercraft and a couple of miles down the road from the car ferry at Fishbourne. Nice historic building, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, letting us check in early. The cleaning staff asked us if we needed anything else and the room was nice and clean with seaview. There were nice little touches such as fresh flowers in the room. Bathroom was good size. Only little thing is maybe it could do with a lick of paint, but this didn't affect our enjoyment of the place. Breakfast was plentiful. Waitresses and bar staff very helpful and efficient. We had dinner there, the menu was adequate, more 'pub fare' than anything fancy, but good portions which suited us after a long day! The bar area is relaxed and a nice place to relax having morning coffee. There was also a jazz band on in the evening we stayed if you were into that, didn't go on too late either and this wouldn't affect your stay if it wasn't to your taste! For the rate we got, we thought it was excellent value for money and will definitely return there on our next visit to the island."

Great location, lovely room
"We stayed here on a short break where location was important and we were well satisfied with our choice. The Ryde Castle couldn't have a better location - right on the sea front in Ryde itself and close to the shopping area and plenty of eating places. It's a lovely historic building which is nicely decorated inside, although the decor is looking a little tired and could perhaps do with refurbishment (a very minor point). Our room was very comfortable and nicely appointed, with a large four poster bed, seating area and decor appropriate to the style of the room and the building. There's plenty of parking on site and the hotel staff were friendly and polite. An enjoyable stay and good value for money."
