"We are two couples that have just returned from a 4day coach trip to the coppice hotel and can only praise Jenny
and Sid on the good standard of the hotel our rooms were spotless food very good we have never seen such large
Puddings staff friendly very quick service at meal times and everyone that we traveled with were of the same
Opinion i spent my birthday there and jenny made it feel special we will certainly be returning."

"I have to agree with some of the less positive reviews I've seen about this hotel. The attitude of the two owners Jenny and Syd could kindly be described as business-like. More accurately as brusque and on occasion faintly Basil Fawltyesque.

For instance, on the 2nd day we made the mistake of sitting at the 'wrong' table for dinner. Not that the table had a reserve notice on it or that anyone had told us the table we had sat at on the 1st night was to be ours for the rest of our stay. We would have willingly moved had we been asked. Instead Jenny snapped at us "you're at the wrong table", snatched the menu and placed it on the next table. This was repeated at breakfast the following day when we returned to our original and we assumed 'right' table! My partner was made to feel uncomfortable and that we had maybe upset the guests at the other table. As a result she apologized to one of them the next day. We found out that not only were they not upset but also that they were regular returning guests. I guess the reason for our treatment in the first place was because we had sat at a table reserved for what Jenny regarded as some of the ‘proper’ guests.

Also, as someone who doesn't eat meat I assumed there would be a vegetarian option on the menu. Presumably one had to specifically request this but this wasn't made clear on the hotel information in our room, anywhere on the menu itself, or when we made the original booking. I eat fish so was happy to have the fish options on the menu. However, when my partner asked for me if there was a vegetarian menu she had the rather brusque response of "Yes, for vegetarians!" then an aggressive "Are you a vegetarian?!" And this after she had just ordered sausages in onion gravy!

On returning to our room we found it was rather cold and the radiators didn't appear to work. When my partner asked Jenny about this she was told "Sorry but we can't control the temperature of individual rooms and the radiators only come on when the temperature is below 12 degrees." Well, sorry - but we were cold and, surely one has a right to expect a better heating system in a 4 star hotel. (One of our fellow guests told my partner she had only slept for two hours the night before as she'd felt uncomfortably cold!)

Again, when we returned in the late afternoon of the third day to find that the chambermaid had left our room unlocked we reported this to Jenny. Again this was met with a rather curt and indifferent “Don't worry no strangers were in the hotel'. Hardly a very reassuring response.

What else can I say? The en suite shower was certainly no "power shower" but a rather ineffectual one attached to the hot and cold taps. Also, the outdoor pool has still not been cleaned. Indoor pool and jacuzzi appeared to be closed. Presumably we had to make a specific request to use them. However, given the brusque treatment we had already received this was something we were reluctant to risk lest we got another 'chewing out.'

The food was ‘nice’ and nothing more. The hotel information refers to the Coppice Hotel’s chef but, from the quality of the food, this seems to largely consist of opening the packets of the shop bought food. For instance, the Traditional Cornish clotted-cream tea which we were promised for the Sunday afternoon was little more than a shop bought scone with some cream. And this was not presented to us in any way whatsoever – we had to queue for it at the bar and then had to butter and put the scone (Note I say THE scone) together ourselves. And I remember that me and my partner had kept seeing Traditional Cornish cream teas advertised in the local restaurants and cafes in the places we visited but said to ourselves, “No, we don’t need to spend our money on that – we’re going to have a nice cream tea at the hotel.” Having experienced tea at the Coppice we wished we had done so now!

As I hinted above the distinct impression we got was that those of us who had booked through GB Tours were seen as 'second-class' guests because we had paid through a budget provider. And because of this we were regarded as a bit of a nuisance and simply there to top up the hotel's income. As we were leaving Jenny wished us a goodbye with “I hope you all enjoyed your stay. And if you didn’t well I'm sorry!" This said in a way that strongly suggested "Well too bad but we couldn't care less!

You might think this a strange attitude from someone in the ‘hospitality’ business not to mention short-sighted - for a successful hotel surely depends on how many paying guests wish to return. Who knows, if you had created a positive impression on us we might have returned next time paying ‘full price’. Besides which our money is just as good as that of any of the other paying guests and we are just as capable of posting a less than flattering review.

We both love Devon and Cornwall and will be returning. Next time however we will be self-catering so negative do we currently feel about hotels in Torquay. So, the Coppice Hotel failed twice over - losing our custom both for themselves and for the rest of the hotels in Torquay."

"g Just returned from a weekend break at the Coppice Hotel, accommodation was good but needs attention particularly in the bathroom ie no hand rail round thebath/shower. Air conditioning in bedrooms,we couldn,t have the window open at night because of the constant noise of traffic on the road by our window. we were very disappiontd with the food, which did not compliment the hotel we felt. No atmosphere around the hotel and some of the bar staff looked as if they wanted to be anywhere but serving their guests. we would not return for another visit. "

"When we first arrived the outside of the hotel looked quite nice with lots of pots & hanging baskets. That was the best bit - everything went downhill from there. Over the last 20 years I have stayed in many hotels in the UK & abroad for both business & pleasure but never have I come across hotel owners who are so clearly in the wrong job, they were definitely not happy in their work. The welcome was non-existent, whenever we needed assitance we had to ring the bell in reception as there was never anyone around - this was even for bar service. This hotel has family rooms which are very small & cramped including the bathrooms. The owners clearly don't like children judging by the number of barbed comments about ours & our friends children who were also staying. Our children by the way are not badly behaved they are typical 2, 4 & 6 year olds! Our friends twice got locked in their room & were made to feel they must have done something wrong - there was no apology, no promise to get it looked at - thank goodness there wasn't a fire in the hotel. The owners made us all feel as if they were doing us a favour. The outdoor pool was dirty, the balustrades surrounding it needed jet washing. On our last morning I asked if the indoor pool would be open as it still wasn't open at 10am when the advertised time is 9.30am - the owner spoke to me like something he'd stepped in - my friend & I just stared at each other open mouthed in disbelief. Our weekend was spoiled by this as we found ourselves not feeling that we could go back to the hotel & feel relaxed there."

"We have just returned from a long weekend at The Coppice Hotel. My partner and I went with my 9 year old and mother in law. We felt the hotel was tired looking. Looks very nice from the outside until you get to the front door. The pool was very mirky coloured and cold. The rooms are clean but very dingy and plain. The service at the bar was non existant. The manager, we felt, was in the wrong job as he either avoided you or was not very pleasant when you did manage to speak to him, not sure he liked children either. The food was ok ish. Its the first chicken breast I have eaten where I needed an electric saw to eat it.! The mash potatoe was lumpy and the toast was rock hard. We would not be returning."

"we found the coppice a lot better its had a great new bedroom and bathroom setout which is far superior to previous owners attempts (taps on right way now and heat regulated) the room my wife had was room 4 it was absolutely faultless new wall mouted tvs as well with freeview channels superb picture reception, sid and jenny are the best hosts we ever encountered on our many trips to torquay, we will definitely go there time and again, and we recomend all the old friends we have met there in the past to go back, the food and atmosphere are better than ever, and by this time next year i wouldn't be surprised the old bar gone and new in its place once again thanks for a lovely holiday sid and jenny xxx love june and brian manchester"

"Having been to the Coppice on quite a few occasions in the past, I have to say I viewed this visit with some apprehension now that the long time owners had sold up. My fears were allayed almost immediately on arrival. The new owners had given the old hotel a much needed facelift throughout. Moreover, they had maintained and more the standards of the previous owners with regards to the standard of the food, the service and general comfort. Well done Sid and Jenny. We would definitely come again if we are down this way."

"My Wife & I And Two Friends have just returned home from our second stay at the Coppice Hotel this year,we enjoyed our stay so much that we have booked to return again in September.
Syd & Jenny really did make us feel very welcome,the Cleanliness,Food ,Sevice & Facilities were First class.

"well what can i say about this wonderfull hotel .nice decor nice surroudings nice food .staff friendly and will do anything for you.good selection of bar drinks and information on local area..relax in the bar and the garden area .or swim in the out side pool i would recomand this hotel to everyone wants a hotel as good as this one .well done sid and jenny"

"This is our second year staying at the Coppice Hotel, the owners Sid & Jenny provide excellent hospitality for our large group. As a cricket team on tour we can be quite boisterous and noisy, but Sid & Jenny (and the rest of the staff) take it all in their stride. The rooms are comfortable and keep to an excellent standard of cleanliness.

There are two swimming pools, although no one from our party has ventured into the outdoor one as it looks a little cold. The indoor pool is an excellent feature and the steam room adds real value, especially after three games of cricket. The hotel grounds are well kept, and Sid always keeps the bar open well after his bed time.

Overall I would highly recommend this hotel, the staff are friendly, its location is excellent. It is located far enough from the centre of Torquay to avoid the bright lights and noise, but near enough that its no more that a 10-15 minute walk from the seafront.

Sid & Jenny, see you next June."

"I have just returned home from the Coppice after a 2 day break. I had a single room which was spottlessly clean. The staff were very friendly and VERY efficient. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. The hotel was beautyfully decorated throughout and the gardens were very well maintained. I travelled with family members and we booked in for Bed, Breakfast and Evening meal and were not disappointed. The food was excellent, plentyfull, well prepared and very efficiently served. The owners and staff were really pleasant and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The kids menu came in handy as my Granddaughter who is normally a picky eater, eagerly wolfed down everything on her plate. We booked 3 rooms, 2 singles and a twin.The rooms, bedding and furnishings were spotlessly clean. The only problem I encountered was the tiny bathroom in my single room. I didn't think that a shower, washbasin and toilet could fit in such a tiny space. A bit out of the way but this did not put me off too much though as we are already planning a return visit."

"I have stayed in various hotels in Torquay before and not many were as good a standard as this. The Coppice punches far above it's weight and surely should be rated higher than the two stars it displays. I have stayed in three and even four stars of lesser quality. The hotel has obviously been recently refurbished and it was so good to see when many others appear not to care. I was told of this hotel by a work colleague so when the family wanted to holiday in Torquay I thought I would give it a try and am so glad I did. The owners were welcoming, the staff friendly, the rooms spotless and the food first class. Congratulations Coppice Hotel. You set a standard that many fall far short of."
