"This is one of the most welcoming hotels I have stayed in. The location is most convenient, and the rooms very comfortable and clean. We had a room at the top of the house and there are lovely views out over Torquay towards the sea. The breakfast was also excellent, and the owners couldn't have been more friendly and accomodating. I would definitely recommend the Shirley to family and friends."

Warm and friendly
"We recently spent several nights staying in the Shirley Hotel, after managing to make the booking only a few days beforehand. The Hotel was easy to find and is just a short walk (about 5-10 minutes) up hill from the harbour. There is off-street parking for around 5-6 cars on the steep forecourt in front of the hotel, and free on-street parking if you can't fit on.
We booked 2 rooms for our stay - a normal double and a smaller double for single occupancy. The smaller double on the 1st floor had a lovely view out to the front and included a good range of facilities including television, hospitality tray, bottled water, biscuits and a lovely power shower in the en-suite bathroom. The normal double on the 2nd floor was small in comparison to other B&B's we have stayed in, but again included the facilities as per the other room. The en-suite bathroom was large and well decorated, but the shower was not powerful and difficult to keep to a constant temperature. We have a toddler and a very smart travel cot with new bedding had been setup all ready to go in our room. The room looked out to the back of the hotel and it was difficult to see anything but bushes.
Breakfast is served from 8.30-9.30 in a very well decorated dining room on the ground floor. We were offered a very good range of cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit and juices, followed by a large selection of hot breakfast items with toast and tea/coffee. The breakfast is excellent and sets you up very well for the day ahead, with the owners even being kind enough to do a smaller portion for our toddler.
There is also a large beautifully decorated lounge with a large TV, squashy sofas and a bar for the evenings.
The owners are very friendly, genuine people who go out of their way to try and ensure that your stay is a pleasant one. Whilst the actual guest rooms may need some updating, the owners caring attitude compensates for this."

warm and friendly
"We booked the hotel on the internet on a last minute whim. Kids are still off school and we love devon and thought of paignton zoo and woodlands park. We only stayed for 1 night (24-8-08) and arrived late afternoon from woodlands. We were greeted by name(Cunningham family) by Garry and shown to the living room(very nicely decorated) and given a pot of tea. The hotel its self is a very nice looking building from the front, and while the inside may not be 5* decor wise, it feels very homely. The service was first rate and the room was well appointed and very comfey. our 2 boys ( 6 and 3) loved the bunk beds. Garry couldnt do enough for us even though we only satyed for one night. Gave us good local info for eating taxis etc and lots of tea!. On the whole we would recomend this hotel to friends because of the good location and very friendly family atmosphere...and a great full english breakfast...

"I recently visited this hotel. When i arrived i was greeted by the owners garry and debbie who offered me a cup of coffee in the tastefully decorated lounge and made me relax and feel at home straight away. The hotel is a grand victorian villa situated very close to Torquay harbourside and local amenities yet in a nice and quiet location. The rooms are clean and tidy and offer excellent value for money. When you enter the breakfast room you feel you staying in a 5 * Hotel as this room is so nice bright and airy . It is easy to see that the owners are very attentive and enthusiastic . They are always at hand to offer advice on where to go and can recommend local restaurants shops and attractions all within walking distance ."

Well presented clean accommodation, good value too!
"Needed a room for an overnight stay on a business trip - the Shirley was choosen on the internet because it was keenly priced. Turned out to be a most comfortable and well equipped little hotel. The owners and staff were very friendly and the full and fresh breakfast was served in a clean and smart dining room. Decoration lacking a bit in the bedrooms but this hotel more than served it purpose and for a very reasonable cost. I would return to the Shirley on future trips to Torquay."

A wonderful stay at The Shirley guesthouse
"We stayed for two nights over the busy Easter weekend. It was very much a last-minute booking but the photos on their website looked very promising. And the rates also seemed very reasonable.
When we arrived after a delayed journey, we were very impressed by the building from the outside. It is only 5 minutes walk from the harbour and is in a lovely, quiet area very near Torquay's museum (the weather was too nice to justify a visit there!).
(One note: due to the location and building, this hotel would not be suitable to disabled visitors. Much of Torquay is on a hill, and the road on which The Shirley is located is no exception.)
When invited in, the owner was very friendly and kindly offered tea and coffee straight away. Great start! And then we noticed how nicely decorated/restored and furnished the house was - especially the lounge and breakfast room. All very tasteful.
We had a choice of rooms. Ours was on the top floor and neither we were shown were very large, but neither were they shoe boxes. I'm sure if you booked in advance, there would be a better choice, including what must be fantastic views out of the front (they were already good downstairs). The rooms were very tidy, extremely clean and offered tea/coffee facilities as well as biscuits and a bottle of water. And the bed was brilliant - the mattress was perfect and made for some of the best sleep we've had in ages.
Breakfast was traditional British with options of fresh melon fruit salad, yogurts, cereals, fruit juices, etc. All well prepared and promptly served in a lovely setting.
We managed to chat quite a bit to and have a drink with the owners who genuinely seemed to enjoy the task of running the guesthouse. They have made a place to stay that puts many 4 or 5 star hotels to shame, from experience! Personal and yet very professional. And considering the cost, fantastically reasonable.
We really look forward to staying again for our next trip to the Torbay coast.
