10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"This is our third year of staying at the Carlton Hotel ....and we will certainly be going back again! Mark and Debbie are the perfect hosts, and have always made us very welcome and very comfortable. The hotel itself is immaculately clean and inviting, with our room having recently been refurbished to an extremely high standard (we had a 'Signature' room - No. 1). The breakfasts are fabulous with plenty of choice, but we always had one of Mark's wonderful full English breakfasts, which set us up for the day ahead. Mark and Debbie are lovely "Yorkshire folk" with a great sense of humour (have to have a sense of humour with us staying there!) -can't wait to get booked up for next year!"

A great stay at the Carlton
"Stayed at the carlton for 3 nights in May 2008 and I cannot fault it. We had a standard double room which was very well presented and decorated and had a lovely view overlooking Newquay harbour. The room was comfortable and had everything you needed including restaurant recommendations which we used to eat at some lovely places in Newquay. The Carlton is very tranquil and quiet so not a party hotel. The owners were very friendly and would do anything they could to help. Breakfast was included which is served from 8.45-9.15am and you could choose from cereals, fruit and cooked breakfast. The rooms were cleaned daily and the doors were locked about 11pm at night but you are given a key so you can come and go at whatever time you please. Car parking is also included which is great in Newquay as there is a shortage of parking spaces. You can either park on the road outside the hotel or on arrival they give you a permit for the public carpark next to the hotel for a £10 refundable deposit. The location of the Carton is excellent although on quite a steep hill which may not be suitable for everyone. Its about a 10 minute walk down into Newquay town and about 5 minutes from Fistral beach. Overall I would definetly recommend the Carlton as its small and friendly like a B&B but with the standard of a good hotel. If your looking for a relaxed, friendly base to explore Newquay and the rest of Cornwall its an excellent choice."

Not able to relax
"Booked the Carlton after reading the reviews. Sorry .... but we were not as impressed as previous reviewers. It was very clean, although decor was far too 'chintzy' for our liking. Debbie, the owner was very nice although we felt as if she was watching our every move. There are notices displayed all around the hotel telling you what you can and can't do. Everything that was posted on the notices, we certainly would not have done anyway. I feel that the clientele they are trying to attract would be put off, as we were, by the 'regimented' atmosphere. The hotel website uses the words relax ... unwind .... enjoy ...., which was very difficult when there were so many notices posted everywhere. We had a superior sea view room which was small, in fact the bathroom, with only a fixed head shower, was so small you could hardly turn around in it. The sea view was obscured by a large crane on a site where a large block of flats is being built. The builders started work at 8am and it was impossible to sleep through the noise, although as breakfast is served at 8.45 (we were not given a choice of what time) we did need to be up by 8am as apart from early breakfast time, check out was 10am. Personally, we have stayed in far superior hotels, although not in Newquay, for the same rate and were very disappointed in our visit to The Carlton. Relax, unwind and enjoy ....... perhaps placing more trust in guests would go a long way to achieve this"

Heaven on Earth!
"On a previous visit to Newquay, when we stayed at The Atlantic Hotel, we found this small Hotel almost adjacent to The Atlantic, thought it looked nice, and thought we'd try it out if ever we went to stay in Newquay again. Our last visit was two years ago, to celebrate my 60th birthday, so we thought we'd celebrate my 62nd at The Carlton. I phoned several months ago, and was told that there was one room remaining. It was the only one without En Suite facilities, and was used mainly for short-breakers like ourselves. The bathroom was private, for our use only, but a few yards from our room itself. Whilst we'd not experienced this before, and although somewhat dubious at first, we soon got used to the idea, and readily accepted the 'short walk' to reach our toilet and washing facilities. Our room was quite small, but very well furnished, and perfectly adequate for our needs. The Hotel works on a B & B basis, with breakfast served between 8.45 a.m. and 9.15 a.m. There was fairly limited choice, but once again perfectly adequate. There was cereal, grapefruit, peaches, then either a full English breakfast, or scrambled egg among the options. I had the 'full' each day after my cereal. It was well prepared, and served promptly. Absolutely great to start the day. The Dining Room was spotlessly clean, as indeed was the whole of the Hotel. Light music played during breakfast which added to the ambiance of the room. I believe ther were 8 en suite rooms in total, then a quiet Lounge area, and a very pleasant Bar, which also had excellent decor. There was a patio in front for drinks which unfortunately we didn't use, due to the inclement weather which we obviously hadn't ordered!! Debbie and Mark Rouse own the Hotel and run it completely themselves. We saw more of Debbie than Mark, as he tended to do more of the 'backroom work' i.e. Cooking breakfast, whilst Debbie was more 'mine host'. A lovely couple who just couldn't do enough for us to ensure that our stay was a success, which it undoubtedly was. I would have no hesitation in going back, and would thoroughly recommend the Hotel to anyone. Having tried the 'Headland' and the 'Atlantic' on previous visits, I would most certainly say that this Hotel was by far the best value for money. The icing on the cake, for us at least, was that they choose not to cater for children or animals, and of course there is already a No Smoking policy throughout. That all adds up to Heaven in our book'. If Newquay is your choice, and you like something small, friendly, excellent decor and peaceful, then look no further than THE CARLTON HOTEL."

Home away from home
"We stayed at the Carlton hotel for two nights in May 2007 and we absolutely loved the place. Debbie, owner and perfect host (together with her husband), will definitely make you feel at home. She is the soul of the house and she is responsible for everything - from making the rooms to making the breakfast. And she is doing a terrific job. She will also help you with any problems or making restaurant reservations. She will also have a list for you with restaurant recommendations and she only recommends the restaurants she is also going to. We tried two of her suggestions - and we had two wonderful evenings. I guess it is the same with the other recommended restaurants... The rooms - and the house itself also - are beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. You even have a flatscreen in your room. You will realize that Debbie wants her guests to have a perfect time. The ensuite bathroom was brandnew and I guess that the shower just waited for the first guest to use it. Probably many guests have already used the shower, but you could not tell. The full english breakfast was very delicious - the best we ever had in our whole life. The dining room is also very nice, and every guest has his one private table. You can also have a drink in the living room in the evening and the prices a quite reasonable. Enough parking space is available right next to the hotel. The hotel is on top of the Towan Headland Peninsula, which offers stunning views over the wonderful coastline. The room rates are also very reasonable for what you are getting here. I am sure that other places yould charge you twice as much... Booking by e-mail was easy because of the quick response. I am absolutely sure, that you will not regret to stay at the Carlton Hotel and that this is also the perfect choice for you."

"Stayed at the Carlton at the end of Feb. 07. We were late arriving but Debbie was there to greet us and made us feel at home straight away. The room was excellent, the sea view was fantastic. The room was kept very clean and we got clean linnen and towels every day. The breakfast was very good, my partner is vegetarian and was also catered for. Debbie was always very polite and very keen to help you with your enquiries on where to visit or walk in the local area. Overall the Carlton is an excellent place to stay, you are near to the town but not too near, there are plenty of good walks just around the corner and is very good value for money, i shall certainly be recommending it to my friends and family."

Great place to stay
"This is a great hotel/guest house to stay. It is near the famous surfing beach Fistral and only a small walk into town. The current owners have made a real effort to do up this property so the rooms are very comfortable. Free car parking as well. [-----------------]"
