Bay Hotel - Not what it says on the tin
"My wife and I stayed at the Bay Hotel, Pentire, Newquay, in September 2010. We booked one of the best rooms with the best view. The view is tremendous - provided you look over the hippie vans that line the front of the hotel where illegal camping takes place. The room is not value for money. It is cramped. The Bathroom is poor. It's no more than a chalet. For similar money we could have a room twice the size in a hotel not too far away. The service is abysmal. The bar staff vary in quality with respect cocktail skills. The reception is sniffy and defensive and the breakfast is pure holiday camp quality. Really awful. Breakfast in particular makes you feel like you're in a guest house. I feel ill thinking about it. The Spa is good. But you can use that if you're not a guest so don't go just for the spa. Would I stay there again? Not on your nellie. It's a trumped up sheep in wolf's clothing not worthy of the risk. If you like fighting your way through queues of coach tourists, eating cheap sausages, staff that ignore you and don't follow-up on inquiries then this is the place for you. Avoid."

"Booked 4 night stay at The Bay. Had read previous reviews so went with an open mind. Check in was easy and very quick and receptionists very welcoming. Had a great sea view room with fantastic views of Fistral Beach. Ate in restaurant the first night and thought the food was excellent value for money. The staff in the restaurant both at breakfast and dinner were excellent and were very attentive. Despite the hotel being very busy the waiting staff did a great job. The breakfasts were 1st class, no complaints. The bar and the service there was superb, quick, switched on and friendly. OK the hotel carpet may be a bit dated and the floors did squeak, but for the price paid it was great value for money. Will definitely be back. "

" When I saw the website, modern, sleek, inviting. I was instantly taken. Turns out I was taken for a ride! We booked the Check in, Chill out package and splashed out the extra for the ocean view plus an extra night. Thank goodness for the view! Spoke to fellow guests and apparently the non-sea view rooms were pitiful (overlooking pipes!). When it comes to the room, the view is the only thing worth mentioning. Ok, maybe I should mention the pub carpet on the hallways, with matching squeaky floor boards, the plastic toilet seat, and the place looks like a halfway house under 15 layers of paint. Instant reaction upon entering rooms is, Budget! Food was, there really is only one word for it, Disgusting! Alarm bells rang when just 1 minute after ordering our starters appeared at our table, obviously pre prepared and not a good start. The mains were also scarily fast, tasteless and bland. I think you would get better be better off eating the menus. The bar didn't change our minds any. After waiting quite some time for our £7 cocktails they arrived at our table with no ice and seeds from the lemon floating in the bottom. YUK!! Our second night, after vowing not to torture our stomachs again in the restaurant, we decided to go out. Looking forward to a hot shower but no. To our further disappointment there was no hot water, apparently "due to the bad weather", yeah right! So we had to go out smelling of our day... not impressed. Compensation upon departure was refused, "beyond their control". So what!? You are a hotel and you are supposed to provide a service! Do not sty here! And donât eat here! The only thing worth checking out is the Spa. The Fistral Spa is the only good thing about this hotel. Thatâs why I gave it a rating of 1. Book a spa day; skip the hotel and the non-existent service. "Fantastic views over Fistral Bay - beautiful sandy beach, friendly and efficient staff - many from overseas. Fresh and tasty food, rooms clean and adequate size, convenient base for exploring north Cornwall coast and, of course, for surfing (well patrolled by lifeguards). On the downside, frequented by quite a large number of coach parties! To fully enjoy the headland setting, book a room overlooking the bay. The view can also be enjoyed from the lounge bar."

Overall poor impression
"Stayed for 2 nights in May 07. Hotel has a great spa and the food is good - however, the rooms are appalling. The whole place creaks, the walls are wafer thin, there is about enough room to swing a cat in the ensuite (so much so that the sink was in the bedroom!). The bed was uncomfortable and the room smelt. Very over priced for what you get."

"Stayed at the Bay for a valentines break with my wife. We really enjoyed it the hotel is in a spectacular position. The service was friendly and enthusiastic. In particular the food was of the highest standard, the bar was uber trendy. We have booked to return in April when their new spa is built."

Was wary due to some of the reviews
"Went with Newmarket Coach trip and was a bit wary due to some of the reviews but it was not as bad as some of the people made out. Room was basic but I think we were in one of the smallest rooms they had. Tea/Coffee facilities very good - even biscuits were supplied. Food was excellent although I think they had some problems with staff not turning up. Bar prices were very reasonable and entertainment supplied on 2 out of the 3 nights we were there. Public bus service not too bad from hotel every hour (bus driver dropped us off right outside the hotel even though the bus stop was only a few more yards further on!! Only disappointment was that the hot water boiler broke down on our first day there so could not have a shower - only method of hot water was from the kettle in the room. Still, boilers do break down occasionally, don't they? Regarding the smoking in the bar area - it was not too close to the eating area. I did not notice a problem with it even though a few people were smoking there. Plenty of other seats in the hotel if you didn't want to sit too near a smoker."

Fantastic, warm and welcoming
"Upon arrival the staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooms were excellent and the distance to the beach was a leap from the hotel but a good climb too. The rooms were excellent with very good facilities, i.e. shower, toilet and sink plus coffee/tea making facilities. Comfort was also highly rated. Meal times were fantastic, again with friendly staff serving your table, and enormous portions of food that were just too much for myself. One downside to this is that they allowed for smoking inside the bar area with was also part of the dining room, meaning you got a smokey atmospere when ever anyone lit up after eating. Evening entertainment was good, but put on for an earlier generation that what I have been used to, however the bar prices were excellent with cask ales and a vast selection of Single Malt Whiskey's available. Be prepared to eat well when visiting here - an eight course meal was provided on the last day which was a struggle to say the least. (The yorkshire puddings were enormous!) I do have to add that the food was fantastic and they provided a large selection of home made desserts. Overall: Comfort 8.5/10 - Food 9.5/10"

Fistral Bay Hotel Don't Stay
"My husband, daughter and myself stayed in this hotel last year - for two weeks! We had to pay on arrival as well, otherwise we would not have stayed more than one night. We booked this hotel through local TI leaflet some six months prior. Our room size was ok, but dirty, smelly and in need of a thorough clean. We bought air fresheners as well as the smell was so bad. The bedding was absolutley disgusting, but as the weather was glorious, we slept with just a sheet over us - the bedding was NOT changed for the whole fortnight- how disgusting is that? Yes we did complain and I actually spoke to the cleaner and requested clean bedding but nothing happened. The food was, at times, just unbelievably disgusting and inedible. There are far far better Guest Houses and B&B's as well as hotels that have a far higher standard of everything than Fistral Bay. We looked around a few, as we would return to Newquay but I would rather sleep on the beach than stay at the Fistral Bay "Hotel" I don't think so !!!!"

Do not stay at the Fistral Bay
"We had to pay almost immediatel on arrival. never had to do that before. Room was smelly, dirty and small. Bathroom was dreadful. Terrible fetid smell all week. The whole hotel needs a damn good cleaning everywhere. Even the lift was dirty. Wehad to buy air fresheners to try to alleviate the awful pong. I found the place awful. If it hadn't been for the glorious weather, we would have returned home. They could learn something from hotels in Spain wich are cleaned thoroughly. Clean up your act Fistral Bay. We did complain but didn't get very far. Were told by receptionist that we were late availability. What theheck does that mean. Doesn't matterif you are bargain tourists or Lady Whatsername. Accommoation should be CLEAN."
