Oh Island in the Sun!
"As experienced visitors to Turkey, my husband and I wanted to do something different this year. Our stay in the Ece Hotel on Sovalye Island was certainly that. Arriving by water taxi and the steep climb to the hotel (not for the faint hearted) was an experience in itself. The warm welcome of owners Erdogan and Handan and their friendly staff made us feel at home right away. Our room was spacious, comfortable and light with breathtaking views over bay and sea. The restaurant offered a wide choice for breakfast to keep you going throughot the day. We could opt for a set 3 course menu for dinner of traditional Turkish cuisine. Mouthwatering! Our host and hostess went out of their way to meet our every need. Sovalye island is not a place for those who want the hustle and bustle of Fethiyes' versatile shopping facilities and nightlife. It's a place to relax and recharge your battery and that was exactly what we did. We'll be back!"

good but not a five star boutique..
"This summer I went with my teenage son to Ece for a week. We did enjoy the holiday and the hotel is pleasant and the staff friendly - but I did not feel that it was quite what I was expecting. Most guests staying at Ece at the same time as me were also slightly disappointed. First, the positives. The hotel has a great position, pitched fairly high above the sea, so it has nice views over the sea. It is quiet, although one is quite close to the mainland , closer than I expected, - so not quite a Crusoe remoteness! The rooms are clean and newly decorated. The staff are very friendly indeed- it is a family run hotel. If you want to stay in a quiet plesant place next to the sea and read/ swim a little, then you may find this place pretty perfect. There are canoes and a laser dinghy and these are all fine and efficiently provided. The island is pedestrianised and you can walk 15 mins to another cafe at other end of island, which has a good sunset view. The less great aspects - the rooms are very simple and cheaply furnished -ditto the bathrooms. Balconies extremely small. The outside space is small. If all guests stay at the hotel during the day it would certainly feel crowded. The main areas to sit are 1, the pool, which is nice but tiny with room for only around 5 people to lounge, 2, down on the decking by the sea, again pleasant but not suitable for young children, and fairly small, and a bit of a walk down!, and 3 on your small balcony. There are no real gardens as such. IE the hotel is perched on an incline next to the sea and it just owns its own narrow strip of land down to the sea, which is steeply terraced. Food varies from quite good to fairly bad occasionally. There is no sandy beach at all. If you have teenagers they might be very bored indeed. My son was fine as he loves sailing ( the dinghy was very useful!) and also he likes reading etc. But some other guests with children had to take their children out nearly every day on excursions, as the hotel is really quite limited. If noisy guests/kids are at the hotel with you, you would hear them, its quite a confined space. There is another resort further up the coast called Bordubet. Similar price to Ece, and all inclusive meals with Exclusive Escapes. I went there last year and I do feel it is a much more interesting, more unique place, offering better food, better ( little) rooms and more of a 'boutique' experience. Teenagers have more to enjoy there- tennis, mountain bikes, sea sports including windsurfing, bigger pool, nice beach area a 15 min boat ride away. In summary, Ece is a pleasant place, but it has limited outside space, and its 4 star not 5 star boutique. We went with Exclusive Escapes to both Ece and Bordubet, and Exclusive are very very good indeed in their organisation, liason and support."

"We stayed at Ece before it went slightly up market. I actually hate to let people into the secret. It was simply heaven on earth. Extremely quiet, no road just a little path to the end of the Island to "sunset" the only other place to eat. Take a torch. In the morning you look out to sea there is nothing else there. We could see the submerged monastry just below the water line from our room. Also wonderful sunsets. Its a short boat ride over to Fethiye and the wonderful market etc but it is lovely to go back to the quiet of Sovalye island in the evening. For a quiet relaxing holiday, anniversary honeymoon whatever this is wonderful...Please don't tell too many people though."
