"We stayed at the Santa Monica in June this year with our 9 year old Daughter on a half board basis. I have to say what a lovely Hotel this is. The food was excellent every night with plenty to choose from. Entertainment was first class and the staff were excellent especially with the children. The train station is only 10 minutes walk away and a trip to Barcelona is a must. Would definitely visit this Hotel again!"

"We visited the Hotel Santa Monica in August. The hotel itself is very clean, the rooms are really nice but the decor in the hotel is a bit dated. The staff are all really friendly and the lobby area is really nice. The swimming pool and childrenâs pool is nice as well with a lifeguard on duty all day. The location is very good as well, really close to shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs although this is all so close noise is never a problem. There is a bus stop 5 minutes walk from the hotel taking you directly to Port Aventura, the theme park in 5-10 mins. We were full board, which was the only thing bad about the hotel. The food was very basic and very repetitive, mainly to suit Spanish people. Not alot of choice and the dining room is horrible as well. Its fine if its only one week but I think 2 weeks would be too much. Overall a very good holiday. "

Fantastic for families, couples. Clean, modern, close to beach and town
"Booked this holiday through travel republic who I must say were fantastic. Our party of seven was myself, my mum and dad and my four childrenaged 14,10,9,6. This hotel is a perfect choice for families and couples. There were no single sex, stag night type groups (ok i'm jealous at those wild enough to party all night!!!) but this was a hotel where your children can have a happy and safe time followed by a peaceful nights sleep. The reception staff are great. Nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are exceptionally clean and modern. Towels are changed daily. We had three rooms. Try to get a pool view. Our one room with a pool view as opposed to the two with road views was far superior. We visited in August and I would say that the percentage of Spanish to English guests was about 60% to 40%. Everyone was made very welcome and Angela who ran the entertainment made sure that all were included. There is a kids club from 10 to 11 in which the kids make masks, do a bit of colouring etc Then there is darts or a game of shuffleboard (can't spell it!) etc The evening entertainment is also good, different shows, bingo ( the only difference at this hotel is that the tickets are free so everyone can join in and not get ripped off) Happy hour is 20.30 to 21.30. I bought two large glasses of white wine and four cokes for 2 euros 30 cents, try doing that in the UK! We found the breakfasts probably a little worse than your usual three star. There was bacon, frankfurter and either boiled, fried or scrambled egg (but not all at once) There is a limited choice of cereal and the only fruit is pears. The hot drinks at breakfast were terrible unless you happen to like coffee combined with hot chocolate. We found the evening meals to be really good. A litre of wine and two litres of water in the restaraunt came to seven euros which is very good value. Each night there is a different speciallity. One night it is carved roast beef with fresh veg and gravy, another night different types of carved salmon, selection of quiches, turkey roasts etc etc. There is a childrens buffet as well and the desserts are fantastic. The location of the hotel is brilliant. Less than five minutes pleasant walk to the beach and the town. The prices in Salou are very cheap. It really is a lovely place to take the kids to. If you are reading this for the 2007 season - McDonalds in Salou are giving away a free child entrance if an adult buys a ticket to aquapolis with every happy meal- its a great day out waterpark with dolphin show. Also lots of bars in Salou are offering a buy one get one free to portaventura if you buy a couple of drinks there. My other point from my holiday is that my kids don't normally burn but my youngest got sunburn despite regular applications of factor 30 waterproof. Trawled the shops and couldnt find any sun protective suits for in the water so buy one before you go. We will go back to this hotel. It is clean, in an excellent position for the beach and town, the food is good and it is family friendly and safe for children."

V Clean v central
"Last weekend stayed in Santa Monica Playa hotel in Salou, approx â¬27 from Reus Airport in Taxi to hotel door. ON arrival entrance of Hotel fabulous, marble interior looks the biz ! Reception staff v friendly and helpful in everyway. Pool not overly big but enough room for everyone while we were there. Breakfast was from 8 -10 which was a little early for us, but we ate in some of the local restaurnants so cant really comment on food. Bedrooms basic but extremely clean and well kept. Overall a plesant experience, 10 mins walk to beach, which is huge advantage and â¬5 - â¬7 in taxi to Port Aventura. Great hotel will be staying here again !"

"I would not recommend this hotel to families with children. Staff were excellent, hotel clean, pool very good with a lifeguard on all day. Food was bad, kids choice was either chips, or the same pasta in tomato sauce every night. Adults food was ok but sometimes cold, a microwave was provided in the restaurant so we were able to re heat the food. We did have to eat out some nights. Entertainment was terrible. Kids Disco is advertised but this is nonexistent, kids entertainer shown her face every now and again but just passes through rather than entertaining the kids! Entertainment was 'bingo' 2 nights of the week!! Salou is a fantastic place, we have been the past 3 years and have loved every time. Would recommend going to Salou but do not go to the Santa Monica if you have kids. "

Many plus points but...
"This holiday was booked at the last minute and in fact we were moved here at the last minute after overbooking at our original accommodation. Bearing in mind its classification there was much to recommend the hotel. The desk staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean on arrival and kept that way throughout the week with daily towel changes and a bi-weekly bedsheet change. The buffet breakfast was more than acceptable. However the major defect lay in the evening meal. We did not expect luxury meals form a three star hotel, but the quality of the buffet layout was very poor, and we had to resort to eating out. For a family on a budget this might well not be an option. I believe that towards the end of the week the quality did improve after many complaints from the guests. To sum up, as a bed and breakfast or self catering option this would have been an excellent choice, but unless the quality of the evening meal improves this will not be a pleasant experience as a half board holiday."

food and staff were appalling
"the area the hotel was in was fantastic as all the pubs, clubs and resteraunts are in walking distance along with the beach. unfortunately cant say the same for the hotel, the rooms were clean but the air conditioning did not work and asked several times to be fixed but fell on deaf ears, the food is absolutly disgusting, the bar staff can not speak a word of english and it is very difficult to order a drink. the reception staff are rude and the secruity guard is unapproachable and very unhelping."

Hated this hotel
"Santa Monica is situated on a steep hill in between two roads which both have a disco and are part of the pub crawl area. If you're a light sleeper don't consider this hotel. The noise went on til 7.30am which included cars blasting music and constant shouting. The disco on our road was Snoopys which has a veranda area at the front so while you never heard music from the disco you had loads of people outside all night. The food is 2star and as we do 2 text holidays each year we've only had food as poor as this hotel offers once in a 2 star hotel. For anyone going on a first holiday this is not what you expect in 3star. the hotel is clean and tidy and the reception staff were nice but after one night and two very basic meals we went out and bookedinto a different hotel. Our holiday started then and what a difference. Still 3star but one of the best 3star we have ever stayed in. Santa Monica is perfect for young couples or singles cos it's in the thick of the night life and maybe out of season it's quieter. And let's face it's cheap but in our case it ended up being a rather expensive mistake!"

"we booked through [--], we booked about a month before our stay and got a great deal. when we arrived at the hotel it was very grand and extremely clean, we were very lucky with our room we were on the 6th floor which only had 6 rooms and it looked out over the beach, the hotel is very close to the beach and would def stay there again, the food was nice with a good selection, grade A hotel!!"

a nice family holiday
"in september 2006 my husband, my son who is 12 and i stayed in the santa monica hotel in salou. we had a lovely time room was basic but clean. the hotel is situated within walking distance to the beach where we spent most of our days and then we went to portaventura theme park at night. we bought the tickets over the internet although other people we met got better deals. we took a day excursion to the barcelona stadium and then the fountains at night which were beautiful. there were many excursions and talking to other people who we met in our time in salou i think we chose the best one. we booked our hotel through 'findspainrooms.net' and we booked full board. this was great as we had our breakfast then went and paid for our sun beds on the beach for the day, did a little shopping,as the shops are right beside the beach then caught a few rays went back to hotel for lunch back to beach then dinner in hotel and then portaventura. the first night we stayed for the fire work display we stood on steps beside exit and saw everything. then the other nights we chose what were the best rides. the only down side about the hotel was it was a bit noisy as it was close to bars but thats going to be expected if your wanting to be situated near the town. i also stayed in playa park in june which is a in a quieter location and better night entertainment as the santa monica entertainment was mostly in spanish. if you have any questions you can email me on [email protected]"
