great hotel and best pool area i have ever seen
"we stayed at this hotel for two weeks from the 14th to 28th may.we are a family of two adults and two children aged 2 and 6 and wanted to stay somewhere that would be quiet for the kids at night time..overall the hotel was great.reception area v modern and spacious and the staff on the desk are v helpful.we had a room overlooking the pool so the view was fab.the room was nice and spotlessly clean..our only complaint was that it was v small for the four of us and i had asked for a large room.there were definately rooms a lot bigger than ours.the two double beds were pushed together and v little room to move around.the rooms were cleaned and we had fresh towels every day which was great.the pool area is fab one of the nicest we have ever seen.the only other one i have seen come close is at the hilton hotel in clearwater beach florida.there are plenty of sunbeds and the pool is v clean.the pool bar serves nice snacks and is reasonable.soft drinks are 1.80euro and a pint of san miguel is 2.60euro.the buffet breakfast is fine..the usual you would expect ..large variety of breads, pastries and meats and cheese.we only ate there a couple of mornings as the kids didnt like any of the food.we didnt try the restaurant at all in the evenings so i cant comment.the hotel was busy and we didnt meet any other irish guests while we were there..it was mainly french and some brits.the entertainment at night was mostly good and the kids loved the mini disco.the hotel is located beside a lovely little beach and you can walk to salou in about 25 mins but it is very uphill so may not be suitable for everyone.we had a hire car so we didnt walk there v often!parking is difficult at the hotel as it is at the bottom of a cul de sac and the spots are always full on the street.we parked up at the roundabout most of the time.i did hear several elderly couples complain that the buses couldent get down to drop them off so they had to walk which wasnt v fair.also i never saw any reps at all from any of the holiday companies for the whole two weeks.we booked independently so it didnt affect us but again the elderly couples were quite upset.i would not recommend any of the restaurants in cap salou for diinner..we tried two of them..route 66 and the paddock.neither were nice and there are far nicer places to eat in salou for better value.also there are small amusements across from the bars and its torture trying to keep the kids away from them.overall we had a great holiday and we would definately go back to the hotel."

Excellent value hotel in a great location!
"My partner and I were looking for a cheap pre-summer break away to chill in the sun and that's exactly what we got! We normally venture to Egypt or Turkey at this time of year as the weather is generally better but decided to head for Spain as we found such a great deal.
£30pp return flights from Birmingham (Ryanair) and 4 nights HB at £50pp (Hotels4u.com) - so £80pp in total...what a bargain! Can't believe what excellent value for money we had. Having not used Ryanair before we were a bit unsure but as it was the only low cost airline to go to Reus we had no choice. We had no complaints at all. If you're only away for a few days i suggest you take hand luggage only and do on-line check in - you can get away with a very reasonable bag size which wasn't checked for size or weight either side of the journey! Both flights were on time and enjoyable - apart from on the way back when we had to go back up in the air extremely quickly seconds from landing! Though this wasn't the airlines fault - apparently there was still a plane on the runway! Everone cheered and clapped when we eventually did land - very scary!!
We were suprised how easy everything was when we landed. If you have booked your holiday independantly and do not have a transfer included then all you have to do is either get a taxi to your resort which was expensive or head for bus stop no. 3 (just outside arrivals) and there will be a tourist guide who will take the name of your hotel and organise a return journey for you on a coach. To get to Cap Salou it costs £9pp return. Which really was good value for the service that was provided. The coach dropped you off minutes from the hotel and you got the coach back on the other side of the road. It was about 10km's which took about half hour with dropping others off on the way.
On arrival at the hotel, we were pleasantly suprised. A large reception area with plenty of marble and comfy sofa's. Check in was quick and easy. At the reception area you also had the usual rep's desks and an internet area (1 Euro for 10 minutes). There is also an atrium style front which looks out on to the pool and sea - nice! From the pool it really does feel like you're on a boat looking straight out to sea. The whole hotel was spotless, no dirt or rubbish anywhere.
The location of the hotel is great. It is situated directly on the sea and within minutes of a great beach and several small coves - all of which were clean and very nice. If you're looking for a hotel right in the middle of all the action then this isn't the one for you. Whilst we were there, there were a lot of older guests many of which were foreign. A few Brits but not many. There were no big groups or hen/stag parties going on and although we're in our late 20's this was nice for us!!
The hotel is about a 20-30 walk in to the heart of Salou. Although a very nice walk it is up quite a few hills. If you decide to walk via the beach there are also a lot of steep steps to climb! You can always get the bus which doesn't cost much and takes about 10 minutes (bus stop is where you get dropped off from the airport). If you do walk take a stop in the Panoramic bar for a cheeky beer. It's about two thirds of the way and you can view the whole of Salou - you'll see a great sunset there too. A very chilled bar with great music. Salou was nice. Lots of bars and restaurants geared up for the Brits - if that's what you want. A lovely palm lined promenade and great beach with marina. It wasn't very busy when we were there although would probably be heaving in July/August. Lots of shops which were much cheaper than in Cap Salou - go to ones along the back of the sea front...the prices are much cheaper!
The rooms were really nice, modern and quite spacious with lots of wardrobe space. Everythng you need includng a fride, tv and hairdryer. There are extra charges for an iron and remote for the TV (it works anyway you just can't turn the volume down!!) If you can try and pre-book a front facing room with a sea view. We didn't but the back view was nice enough - looking on to the promenade.
We were most impressed with the food. We didn't have great expectations. Having stayed in many 5* resorts with buffet service this was up there with the best. Breakfast was great - full english fare with additional spanish options if you wanted. Try the dark spanish red sausages - amazing! Also had a cold buffet of meats, cheese and salad which was nice. The usual egg station, juices, pastries and breads were also available. You even get Cava which you help yourself to! Thought it would be the cheap stuff but no - 11.5% and really good. A nice way to start the morning!! Evening meal was very good. A full salad bar and different soup to start with lots of choice for main including a live cooking section with every type of meat going and lots of different hot dishes including chips and bolognese for those looking for a bit of comfort. There were even king prawns and smoked salmon available one night which was a nice suprise! The desserts were amazing. Lots of different cakes and fresh fruit including strawberries! Yum! We used the restaurant a couple of times for lunch which was also good but there is a bar at the pool serving snacks/fries if wanted. Alcohol at the hotel could get quite expensive if you wanted a good drink - it was approx £3 for a pint of San Miguel. That was the cheapest. There were very few bars (maybe even one?) in the close vacinity of the hotel to go to so if you didn't want to venture very far you didn't have much choice!
Service was good throughout our stay. Housekeeping, bar/restaurant and reception staff were all very pleasant. You'll always get an 'Ola' and a smile!
Can't really comment on the entertainment. There were a few activities around the pool area during the day with good music. There would always be something going on during the evening. A kiddies mini disco at 9pm with main entertainment at 10pm - singer, magician, bingo, quiz etc. From what we saw it was okay - not our thing but still quite entertaining.
I have to mention the weather. We weren't expecting what we had and were very lucky for this time of year. Blue skies and bright sunshine for the 5 days we were there. Temp between 23-27c. It couldn't have been better. Do have to say wear lots of sun ceam. We both burnt quite badly on the first day.
Some tips for those considering this area and hotel. There is a little shop up the hill (by the bus stop). You can buy beers (6 x san miguel) for approx £2.50. We bought these during the day and went to the nearby beach. We even had some around the pool of the hotel and nobody stopped us! Also the buses. You can get a card for 10 Euros which you can use 10 times whatever local journey. A good saving as a bus to Salou costs nearly 2 Euros each way.
In summary a really good, relaxing, quiet hotel in a lovely location. I'd say worthy of it's 4* rating. Suitable for couple or older guests looking for a chilled holiday. I've attached some photos of the hotel and surrounding area."

Room with a view.
"Thomson's rate the Negresco 4 Star,in My opinion 3 Star would be nearer the mark.
Very impressive situation. Pool and Sun bed area, surrounded by the Sea, with ample
Sun Beds, Chairs etc. A very large eye catching Reception Area with comfortable seating. The Bar and Entertainment Room has a Stage etc. But full marks for the well furnished quite Room. The indoor Pool is part of a fitness unit, and You have to pay to use it.... A black Mark for this one. The bedrooms are a good size, with two double Beds, but what is it They have against Draws ?.
The Bathroom needs updating, and I have never been in a Four Star Hotel without a Shower. A Shower head is provided, but nothing to fit it on, so the best You can do is have a hose down.
Sheets and Towels are changed regularly. The Hotel always had a very clean and cared for appearance
However this Hotel falls down badly on it's Dining Room. Queuing outside at peak times, then standing at the table while it's cleared and prepared. The tables are so close it's a work of Art weaving Your way through them, while the Food is very repetitive, and lacks imagination for a four star Hotel.
Would I go again? Yes if I got a good offer. The big redeeming feature is the Negresco's situation, and it's Views."

Good for the price
Overall a good holiday for my girl friend and I. Airport transfer was short no more than about 30mins. Check in was efficient, requested a sea view when booking at travel agents and was not disappointed. Large hotel with 3 sides and 5 floors only one side has the good view.
Small issue for me but to some families or disabled people it may be an important point to mention that the lifts were awful! There were only two guest lifts and one service lift (for the maids) at peak times you could be waiting ages and any Russian guests who have no concept of queuing would barge in front! For this reason I generally took the stairs.
Rooms were clean and spacious, beds comfortable and made every day, towels changed every few days or so, bathroom cleaned daily. The bedroom was not touched for two weeks though which was a shame meaning a very dirty floor by the end of our stay. One of the best points about the room was the mini hall leading to the bedroom, this meant there were two doors before getting to the corridors this greatly helped reduce noise from fellow guests, on the subject of noise the walls were ok unlike a lot of hotels I have stay in so unless you have very noisy neighbours you should get a decent nights sleep. The room had a hair dryer fridge air con (restricted hous) and TV all free. The TV had very few English cannels. Bathroom nice, Balcony very small.
The pool is my main complaint far to small, the English were just as bad at getting up at 6am and reserving the few lounges with towels as the germans. If the pool is a big part of your holiday then the negressco is not for you. One consolation is that the hotel is very close to the beech.
The food was ok, had to wait upto 20mins to be seated at peak times though. Large variety of salad fruit pasta and meat. Chips every night as well!! Staff were helpful but obviously rushed of their feet hence this could be confused as rudeness as some other reviews have mentioned however I do not believe this to be the case.
Cap solou was about 8-10mins away, a mixture of bars and restaurants good for families with young children. Main salou was a good 25mins away lots of hills to walk up and down to get there.
We chose salou as it was next door to the large theme park futuventura, this however was a good 50mins walk away from the hotel hence a bus is advised. Bus service was good and about 1min away from the hotel.
Hope this helps, in conclusion this hotel was very good for the price I paid."

"Everything was fine check in no problems although couldn't get a sea view, as hotel was full. Hotel in a lovely spot but if you want to be near all the bars etc not recommended. It was a good 15 mins (up hill ) to the center of Salou but it suited us fine, especially at night as you could walk some of the calories off.The food I couldn't find any fault with, something for everyone and hot, the downside the grill where it is cooked as you wait steaks etc, omelette's in the morning was always a long queue so passed on that most days The pool area was very nice but a little on the small side but a lovely sea breeze, and it is only a short walk to the lovely beach. The rooms where very nice with Queen beds very comfortable a fridge comes in very handy and air conditioning, the only small thing was the shower although continuous hot water, there was no bracket on the wall so washing your hair was a bit awkward. The staff were very friendly and polite and nothing was to much trouble. YES I WOULD recommend this hotel"

enjoyable week's holiday for family of five
"We are a family of five (children aged 3, 8 and 11) wanting a pool, beach close by, half board and nice location for a week's holiday. Overall impression - Good for a week. The children could have stayed longer! Without a decent resort or restaurants near by, half board is the best option. However, I would have found more than a week of this routine monotonous.
The hotel is well situated next to the beach, on the sea's edge with lovely views out to the sea from the pool and bar areas. Apart from a little supermarket and other hotels there is not much else around. A short, pleasant walk to the beach. Good local bus service. Had a good day out in Barcelona. (one and a half hours plus, by car)
The nearest Resort
The hotel is in the coastal area of La Pineda, far enough away from the main resort of Salou to avoid entirely if you want to.
Sandy. Shallow water for children to play in. Snorkelling among the rocks.
As this hotel is right on the coast, with such lovely sea views, I think it is worth double checking you've got a room with a sea view before you go on holiday - we were at the back above the generator and delivery point!
The children loved it. Here they made their friends. There is toddler pool and a main pool with steps down to more shallow part. Sunbeds get reserved with towels but we always managed to find one or two - it's not a problem. The pool bar is pricey. It's lovely to be by the pool and stare out to the sea.
To be avoided. Small, gravel based, rickety.
We were on a half-board basis. The food was plentiful and varied enough for breakfast and evening meals. The grilled meats and fish were tasty. Fresh coffee used in the machine and freshly squeezed orange for breakfast. We all ate well.
Fine. Appear recently refurbished. Air con, fridge, TV and balcony in our rooms.
We travelled independently and had a car. There is no dedicated parking, but free street parking. It was crowded (August) but we always managed to find a space and avoided paying 15 euros per day to park in the next door hotel.
Our fellow holidaymakers
A mix of family groups and couples - Spanish, French, English and Russian.
small gym, (fine); indoor pool, miniclub; (didn't use so can't comment) entertainment, (the kids liked it, I enjoyed some of it, and it can be avoided by sitting in the outside bar area with an eye on the children); internet access."

Not the Best
"The hotel is situated in Cap Salou at the end of a road next to Llarga beach. There was no parking at the hotel for our car so you have to go across to the Punta Dorada and pay 15 Euros a day!! To use their underground car park. There is parking out on the street but never came across a space the whole week we were there.
The reception area was big and clean and the receptionist seemed friendly. I had emailed the hotel prior to arrival and had requested a sea view room which we got. The room had two double beds pushed together and was very small for two adults and two children, some of other rooms were bigger when we walked past and peeked in. We had a lovely sea view from our balcony.
The restaurant is located at the bottom of the hotel. Sometimes the lift works, sometimes it doesnât so we had the carry the buggy down most days. You are shown to your table by a welcoming man, drinks are expensive. The food was not very good, I walked round the restaurant three times and couldn't find much I liked, most things were unidentifiable, I queued ages for some grill steaks thing that were being cooked and the guy before me in the queue took all of them but after noticing the chef cooking these items of food had enough sweat dripping off him to fill a pool and was doing nothing to stop it going onto the food I am glad the other people got them LOL. We ate out every night after that. The staff hover round your table waiting to take your plate and we got shouted at for sitting in the wrong place one morning. Breakfast was ok, some of the pastries were a bit stale some mornings and there were these things that resembled donuts that crumbled in your hand when you pressed on them due to being left out all week. The guests at the hotel were a mixture of French, Spanish and Russian, very few brits. So plenty of barging in and no queuing.
The pool area
Beds available until 9.30 most morning, same old story people leave towels on the beds all day and disappear out all day. I never seen the pool cleaned all week, in fact if you look closely you can see dirt on the bottom of the 2 pools and dirt in all the grill areas around the pool. The only time the area around the pool was cleaned was when they were anticipating a storm they rearannnged all the beds so the rain could clean the area.
The children's play area was a joke it was disgustingly filthy and tons of glass in the gravel, really really poor.
In the games room there were bare wires hanging out of the walls and blood on the walls.
Entertainment was geared towards the Spanish, which is fine as you are in Spain after all.
The hotel was about a 30 min slow walk into Salou. A taxi is about 8 Euros, the mini train was 7 Euros for two adults and 2 children. Bus stop at the top of the road. Avoid eating in the Knights Inn round the corner food was awful, some more restaurants in Cap Salou but never tried any, looked a bit of a dive, in fact the whole of Salou was dirty and disgusting.
The hotel has recently been upgraded to a four star, I think I would struggle to give it 2.
Also they leave the pool open all night, doesnât close at 7 like they say, so if you fancied a quiet night you have kids screaming and diving in the pool until early hours. Also pets seemed to be allowed, they had a cat in the room next to us."

Great hotel - surprised at the 3* rating!
"I'm just back from a girly week at the Hotel Negresco and can't find fault with the place.
I was travelling with a group of 4 other girls, all in our 20s, but we were looking for a hotel that would allow us to relax during the day and then walk to the resort centre at night. The Negresco is a bit out of the way, but if you're looking for something quieter it's ideal, and it's maybe a 20 minute walk (and a picturesque one at that) to Salou's nightlife. Meanwhile if you need anything there's a little shop at the top of the street, and a chemists, pub and more shops in nearby Cap Salou.
The hotel was spotless. We were on the second floor, 3 of us sharing a room and there was a huge bathroom and balcony, all of which the maids kept clean. My only complaint about the room was the fact that the maids don't tend to knock before coming into the room in the morning, or the bathroom, which doesn't lock!
The poolside was lovely, with a gorgeous view of the beach and sea. The beach itself is tiny, but with only a few people on it, it makes for a nicer experience than fighting for space in busy Salou centre.
The food is also very nice - there's a lot of choice, with new things to try and old favourites for the fussy eater. We even had a champagne breakfast on our last day, included, and on the Friday night every female was presented with a red rose (understandably, we were all chuffed!)
The hotel is more family-orientated, so if you go during the summer expect a lot of kids, especially in the pool.
But, overall the Negresco is a place you can relax in, and I'd definitely recommend it."

"Having stayed at The Negresco Hotel four years ago you arrive with certain expectations. A new road connects Cap Salou with Salou. A new path along the seafront will take you to Salou in 20 minutes. The bus at the top of the road will take you there in 5 minutes for â¬1.30 (â¬3.40 after 11.30pm) and to La Pineda for â¬1.40. After 11.30pm, for a party of three or more, it is cheaper to get a taxi. The location is peaceful and away from Salou centre which has become very commercialised.
The room for our party of three adults was small but more than adequate. It costs â¬18.00 weekly to hire the safe. The maid service was very good. The pool and sea view was beautiful. Hotel staff were very courteous, more than helpful. We went half board and the quality of the food was perhaps not quite as good from when the hotel was owned by The Princess Group (now Best Hotels), but nevertheless still very good with plenty of variety.
The swimming pool is big with a separate pool for younger children. A life-guard is on duty from 10.00am to 7.00pm daily. Guests tend to rise early to reserve their sunbed. The entertainment at night was a real disappointment. Not much variety and nothing that would make you say to yourself âI must watch thatâ. Relatives stayed at The Calypso and their entertainment was first class. Prices at the bar and by the pool-side are on the expensive side. The corner shop at the top of the road does a roaring trade, as does the larger supermarket closer to Cap Salou. Internet access in the hotel costs â¬1.00 for 10 minutes. There are four quality Dell computers. La Pineda is well worth a visit, as is Tarragona. In fact Tarragona is a must see. A beautiful town only some 15-20 minutes away at a cost of â¬2.40. Barcelona was wonderful. The Ramblas is something special and of course there are the magical dancing fountains and the Nou Camp for the football fan.
We never did manage to get to Costa Caribe (Water Park) but Port Aventura, the large theme park, is the major attraction and a must for all itâs thrills and spills. It does need the best part of two days to get round it all. As remarked earlier Salou has become very built up and just plain commercialised. There are no end to bars and eating establishments with young people on street corners wanting to give you a leaflet or card advertising the particular establishment. Be alert for the pickpockets.
Everything considered it was a very enjoyable holiday and I would recommend The Negresco Hotel to anyone."

Good For A One Off Visit
"Me (50) and and my partner (43) holidayed here the end of June beginning of July 2008 after finding the hotel by researching the internet and google earth. The main attraction being the pool overlooking the sea.
Our opinion of :-
1. Rooms - clean and tidy, maids worked hard and came in every day. Only disappointment was the lack of a sea view which we couldn't pre-book with Thomson. Air Con worked a treat.
2. Restaurant & Bars - Clean, varied choices of food but a bit repetitive over 14 nights. The show cooking left a little to be desired with food sometimes undercooked. The worse part of eating in was the scramble for food at the buffet, people can be so ignorant, espcially the Russian contingent. As for the bars....nice to sit in but don't expect an efficient service from the waiters....they stand around or clear tables but they do not want to get you any drinks!!! At one point I had to get up and go to where a waiter was standing to physically give him an order. In the end we went to the bar ourselves like most guests did.
3. Pool - Excellent pool, always clean and regularly checked by the attendant. Life guard was almost always on duty. Only complaint as with most hotels was the lack of sunbeds...you need to put towels down before 8:30am to make sure of a bed although this is against hotel rules. Some people put towels out and didn't use the beds til late afternoon (4ish) so its no wonder people resorted to clearing towels off after a certain time of unattendance.
4. Guests - This was a shock to us as we thought it would be mainly English guests, how wrong as the majority were Russians who also seemed to be in large numbers in Salou itself. Not a problem except for the language problem and occasionally rude queue jumpers.
5. Location - the hotel is in Cap Salou and about 30 minutes walk in the heat to Salou centre, maybe 20 in the evenings when its a little cooler. The hotel is a good base, away from the noise but not too far to walk into the centre for evenings out.
6. Salou Centre - A clean resort but very busy on the roads and around the shopping walkways. A nice quite bar on the promenade is the "El Rinconcito Del Mar" its means a little corner on the sea (I think). Its near the end of the promenade heading towards Cap Salou.
If you deciide to go there then when you head back taking some steep steps up to the road to Cap Salou, do not call in at the Rovers On Sea pub....whilst the view and the drinks are fine, the so called owner is a complete moron who insults passers by and is not much better with his customers. For instance, two inmocent guys were walking past his doorway on the steps and he decided they were gay, calling taunting remarks to them even though they had doen nothing to upset or attract his attention. On another occassion he shouted at me "you could take your empties back" whilst I was only going to the toilet! Unfortunately it was our last night when he came out with that one otherwise he'd never had our custom again. Rant over ... you know who you are!!!!
All in all a good holiday and good weather most of the time. A good base to visit Barcelona and Montseratt (? Spelling), plus doing a jeep safari is worthwhile...seeing some quaint little villages up in the mountains.
Would we go again - not really as we fealt we'd exhausted the area and felt two weeks was too long.....10 days would have been better."

Took in a small bottle of water to take medication, not allowed only there rip off drinks,no beef on the menu so far, asked for coat hangers still waiting, only one user plug in main room,no kettle, single ply toilet paper so bring your own marry gold gloves, never ever again.
