Having spent a few holidays in Benidorm...

"Having spent a few holidays in Benidorm over the past few years and having noticed a general lowering of standards especially in food choice and preparation I had thought this was the norm now for Benidorm hotels. What a pleasant surprise to find the Hotel Helios maintains high standards in not only food but in all other levels of hotel service.
All members of staff were extremely helpful and pleasant that includes the reception staff, cleaning staff and bar staff with a special mention to the restaurant manager and his staff to whom nothing was any trouble.
You were allocated a table for the duration of your stay and although I know that does not suit some couples who like to dine alone, we found it no trouble and enjoyed our conversations with the other two guests who shared our table, the real plus side was that as all meals were of a buffet style you could always go to your table upon entry to the restaurant instead of waiting for a table to become available. The tables were kept in an immaculate condition and used dishes removed very quickly and never allowed to build up, the food was of a very high standard during our week stay, always hot and with a excellent choice of dishes that seemed to cater for all tastes and nationalities and were at all times kept in a plentiful supply.
The cleanliness of all public areas of the hotel and the bedrooms were kept to a very high level all though our stay, the only real problem area was the pool area with at least half of the sun beds in a very poor state of repair rendering them not suitable for use. The pool chairs and tables were also unusable because of the dirty condition and although cleaned eventually usually a few hours after the pool opened it was generally down to the guests to find a cloth to clean them.
Rather disappointing that the pool area should let down otherwise what must be the best hotel of its star rating in Benidorm, one I would definitely visit again.

"We have just returned from a week Helios and we were very sad to leave. The hotel is lovely, food was good and resturant staff were lovely. Hotel and bar staff were friendly - some didn't smile much but they were polite. Room was cleaned ever day and the towels change. Helios is very central for the beach and the bars that we liked - 5 minute walks literally. There is so much to do in Benidorm and not enough time to do it. Will be booking again for next year as we enjoyed it so much. Overall I would say we had a ball in Benidorm and the Hotel was fab."

"The Hotel Helios was very nice. The rooms were cleaned daily and the staff are nice. Pool and terrace immaculate and bar staff good. Very spacious grounds with children’s play area. There are plenty of sun loungers, but do get them early as many have towels put on before breakfast. The entertainment was ok but it was music with a DJ playing 'Macarena' or 'Superman' and those other dances they all do, plus some adults doing line dancing.

About 11pm each night there was some type of act. Parrots on bikes, two Latin American dancers, flamenco dancers, magic act. Bingo and quizzes as well. We were overlooking the pool where the entertainment was so loud take ear-plugs as this music goes on till 12.30am every night. There is a club which is close by and you get revellers coming out in the early hours making a racket.

There was plenty of good varied food for different tastes. The breakfasts were very nice. However, if you go on any trips you need to order a packed picnic lunch before 8pm the night before your trip. All I can say is don’t bother. In the box were 2 seeded burger baps, one with ham and one with cheese. A hard boiled egg, one hard roll we saw the waiter take off the breakfast table but with no butter, warm bottled water, a tomato, a small tin of pate, one rotten apple and a bruised orange.

On our last day we left at 7am so got no breakfast or lunch which we were entitled to, so ordered the breakfast box and the picnic lunch for later as we were going home by coach. We expected croissants and maybe butter and jam plus juice but, surprise, surprise; the breakfast box was the same as the lunch box. But this time no tomatoes. Apart from this small thing we had a great time and would go back to Benidorm again.

The Levante beach is a 5 minute walk. There are plenty of shops and things to do. Bowling along the main road is 5 euros per person. A children’s fairground is next door to that. There is a really nice 18 hole crazy golf opposite the Don Pancho Hotel and that’s 5 euros each. Try the mini train (4 euros per person) at night time so you get to see the many lit up shops while travelling the length of the main road. Mundomar is a spectacular marine park where there are 3 shows. These were sea-lions, dolphins and parrots. It had exotic birds and animals as well. It was great and we booked it via the hotel rep (21 euros each). Terra mitica is a theme park worth seeing and that was cheaper booked with the hotel rep (24 euros) each. If you go to the theme park it opens at 10am. The number 21 bus goes there but does not start until 11am. The bus is good value and all journeys are only 1 euro each way."

"After reading some of the reviews I was a bit worried about staying at the Helios, but I am pleased to say there was no need to worry as it was a lovely hotel. The food was very nice with a good selection, not great choices for children but good for adults. The rooms were cleaned every day and were very spacious. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the pool area was lovely. You would be very lucky to get a sunbed as people were waiting for them before they were even put out but there is a grass area where you can sunbathe. I would definitly recommend this hotel and would stay there again with no hesitation."

better than expected

"We have just returned from a fortnight at the Helios and it was much better than some of the reviews paint it.
The food was much better than i expected always a choice of 2 or 3 meat dishes as well as fish plus salads, on the downside the breckfasts could have been better and were sometimes cold but they did have a microwave if you needed to heat it up, also the desserts were not that good but that did not bother me as i dont have a sweet tooth.
The staff in the restraunt were nice as were the maids and reception staff however the bar staff were'nt, there loss i just stopped tipping them!
Rooms cleaned every day, lovely pool area and as for towels on sunbeds, that goes on at every hotel and i have seen towels on bed before 8 in the morning before at some hotels, here you could still get sunbeds at 9.30 or even later, the sunbeds were the better type with back rests and a material to lie on not like the hard cheap plastic ones with no back adjust like some other hotels use
Also this hotel has the best air conditing that i have know, not a little overworked box on the balcony, its in the centre of the room and even does the bathroom, we were switching it to low on a night and even in the daytime sometimes.
On the downside of the rooms the beds were too hard for me
Overall i would definitly use this hotel again"

"Extremely clean. Maid service every day with clean towels. Bedding changed every 3rd night. All staff very polite and willing to help. Restaurant very clean, good choice of food but very repetative especially if staying full board. The lettuce usually had little flies amongst the leaves as if it hadn't been washed properly, and the fruit was past its best. We were a party of 4 persons which meant we were allocated our own table for the duration of our stay. Couples had to share a table which may be a little off- putting. On two occassions we asked for "picnics" instead of returning for lunch, but found the contents very unappetising and went to a cafe instead. Pool area very clean, watch out for people reserving sunbeds before breakfast! Entertainment adequate. but lots of choice in other hotels anyway. Hotel close to all bus stops and very easy to travel to neighbouring towns. La Marina shopping centre has all the "named" shops. 5 mins from beach."

"We stayed at the hotel Helios for a week, we were allocated on arrival and we were happy with where we were placed. The hotel was really clean, rooms were a good size with a nice balcony.

The pool looked good but with the hotel only being a 5-10 minute walk to the beach, we didn't use it!

It's close to the shops, bars and restaurants although we tended to avoid the bars in the main square and headed down to the bars on the beach and the old town for live bands.

The choice of food was good, but the quality of the evening meals wasn't so good. There's plenty of places to eat nearby though.

We'd probably stay in this hotel again although we might opt for the old town if we come to Benidorm again.

I'd recommend this hotel to those wanting a nice, clean, central hotel. "

"Me, my friend and her family went to hotel helios. We had read reviews on this hotel before we went and we were feeling abit optimistic about it all-but there was really no need to. We arrived at the hotel and found that it was exceptionally clean also very modern, the rooms were spacious and clean-with maids cleaning it to your choice (door notice). We also read in one review that there was no balconys. LIE! There was balconys, which were also rather big, with your ordinary patio table and 2 chairs. In the pictures we had saw of our pool, we didn't really like the look of it, but once there we LOVED the pool. The pictures really don't do the pool justice. The staff at Helios are very polite and friendly. The food-if you are a fussy eater (like me) then there isn't much to eat i suppose. I basickly lived on their chips all holiday. However if you arent a fussy eater then im sure you would enjoy the food as much as my mate and her dad did.
Helios is sitauted right near the bars, and not a long walk atall to the beach (about 5-10 mins, maybe not even that.)
The best bars we went into were the rock and roll bar-which have a great variety of shows on, however some are repeated most nights. Also if you are rather young the square would be a good place for a night out (dance music etc)
Overall all of us LOVED our stay at Helios and would definatly go back to this Hotel in the future. it was our best holiday by far, thanks to the hotel, its staff and its area. Infact we loved Benidorm & Helios so much that me and my mate are planning a girlies holiday there in a yr or 2, back to Helios."

"HAVE JUST GOT BACK FROM OUR HOLIDAY IN THE HOTEL HELIOS IT WAS A FANTISTIC HOTEL, VERY CLEAN AND THE ROOMS WERE CLEANED EVERY DAY. WE HAD THE VIEW FACING ONTO THE MARKET,WHICH CAUGHT THE SUNSHINE IN THE MORNING.THE ROOMS WERE QUITE SPACIOUS TOO. the only down fall to this hotel is the meals , every day was either fish ,chicken , chips, or salad the puddings were nothing special, in fact the fruit was not even fresh looked like they had it a few days as the grapes were all soft, the food was nice but there definatly was no variety at all, especially if you were taking any children there just was not a thing for them. also you was told where to sit at meal times which was very off putting for us. you was very close to the beach and central for the pubs. the pool was ok but was not enough loungers for people we ended up going down to the beach every day as there just was not enough space to sunbathe."

"The flights to and from resort were fine, daytime and civilised times. Transfers were satisfactory, given the extra time required for security. Reception was polite and helpful, and check-in was quick and easy.

Accommodation was very clean and comfortable, room services on a daily basis with as many clean towels and linen changes as required.

The pool was very clean, as was the pool area and not too crowded at this time of year. The daytime entertainment/games were very basic and amateurish, but since most people either just swam or went out into town, this was not too important.

More important was the evening entertainment, which seemed to cater for a large group of Spanish couples from outside the hotel; dancing to Spanish recordings or music for line-dancing (again for the same groups). Other entertainment consisted of local acts doing the rounds from one hotel to another, anxious to sell recordings or photos (with snakes etc.).

The main criticism was the food. I did not think it was possible to find so many ways to ruin excellent raw materials, but the chef managed to surprise many of us.

Excellent beef, pork, and fish dishes were ruined by adding strange sauces, such as curry powder to what would otherwise have been a really succulent stewed beef.

I survived mainly on chips (which were quite nice), and salads, which really surprise my wife, since I rarely eat them at home. Incidentally, everyone I spoke to was of the same opinion.

To sum up, my rating would have been 9/10 had it not been for the meals."
