"I had travelled on my own. On arrival my room was not ready and I had to wait for over an hour in the reception/bar area. Very unfriendly staff from the start to the finish of my two week holiday. The Hotel was of a very good standard. Excellent rooms with views of sea. The food lets the hotel down badly and for the whole of the 2 weeks was cold and unappetising. I have never stayed in a 5 star hotel and had to use microwaves to heat food and heat your coffee and tea. I would only rate the food as 2/3 star. I found by the second week I was eating out most evenings. From the lovely English bars I visited I was told the food had been an ongoing problem for nearly 2 years and they had many customers eating away from the hotel. I find this not acceptable when you have paid for half board. The pool was lovely but on an evening the first week there it was not attended when closed and beds were left in a mess especially with the winds. I did notice the second week when new arrivals came (Austrians and Spanish) the pool was kept tidy and a life guard was present. There is no smoking at all in the public areas and outside there is no area to sit and have a cigarrette (no ashtrays available on request). I would not reccommend his hotel to any one unless the food improved dramatically. I asked my travel agent to check the food reviews on this hotel when I was offered an uprade, because I had stayed in Rocquetas de Mar at New Year in a different place and had heard complaints about the Portobello food from a lot of people in bars who were having to eat out. I was assured that there was no problem."

"The 5 star portorbello has the wrong star rating. Accommodation in the village part of the hotel where we stopped was adequate, and on first impressions clean and well equipped, but after a 10 night stay the soap/shampoos and shower jells were never replaced so take your own, the beds were only made and we had the same sheets for the full 10 days, if you are expecting fluffy towels as befits a 5 star hotel they donât excite. Are now we come onto the food, well if you are a fan of water melon, chocolate mousse, fruit, and the extremely brightly coloured jellies, with the odd profiterole thrown in for good measure , then you will be fine , but after 10 days of the same thing it gets a bit much and not 5 star. Now the main course, all of the vegetables were over cooked and left to go cold, when you ask for hot veg, meat, pastor ECT you are told to put it in a microwave kindly provide by the hotel, I have never been to a 5 star hotel in my life and been asked to worm up my main meal in a microwave, this is not 5 star. Now to the waiting on staff in the restaurant, most were OK but there was one particular young lady that need to go to charm school, any thing you asked for was thrown at you including the wine which ended up spilling on the table and was not cleaned up, when you had finished eating the plate would then be snatched from under your nose and donât ask her for anything else other wise you got the death stare. She was never pulled up for her attitude this is bad management and not 5 star. All in all they need to improve there staff they need more training on how to be a 5 star hotel . "

"Very unfriendly and rude restaurant manager . The food was disgusting. Buffet where you then had to heat your own food up in a microwave. Is that 5*?????? Would definitely NOT recommend this hotel."

First Impressions, Outside Building Quit...
"First Impressions, Outside Building Quite Impressive, Entrance and Reception Likened to a Bus Station Waiting Hall, Cold ,uninvitingand with little seating area, so called "Cocktail Bar", similar to a station coffee kiosk, too small and other than high bar stools no comfortable seating area to receive friends or other guests. Reception Staff not of 5 Star quality, Hotel rooms good, clean and of reasonable size. Dining Room Large, but cold lacking atmosphere, as with the whole of the hotel it has no soul, variety and selection of food poor certainly not 5 Star standard, I would rate just about 2 Star, it was also the only one restaurant open out of three advertised. Seriously in need of Good Management. It would have to improve very considerably for me to visit again, would certainly not recommend."

"Just come back from holiday which was great. We found the reception staff tried to be very helpful but spoke very little English. The staff in the dining room did not speak any English at all and were not very friendly. First impression of the hotel is good reception area very clean, but our room was not cleaned to a high standard the floors were not mopped at all while we were there. The bathroom was cleaned everyday and clean towels were supplied. Had a small problem with shower and it was sorted very promptly. The entertainment in the hotel was very limited, a bloke on an organ about twice in the week. Pool area was great and was right next to the beach. "

"I thought the hotel was brilliant. The staff were very friendly and always willing to help, they spoke English very well, and were very personal. What I mean by this is that we have 2 younger kids, and the waiters in the restaurant would always come over and start talking to them both, and make a big fuss of them every evening. The room was always very clean, we got our room serviced every day and never had any complaints. They changed the towels every day, they changed our linen if it needed doing (which with 2 young kids, was pretty often!) The outside swimming pools were not heated, which made them incredibly cold at first, but once you had been in there for a while and started moving around, it was actually at a very comfortable temperature. The inside swimming pool was heated, and it was just right; not too hot, and not too cold. We didnât try the spa, but we did notice that it was 20 Euros to use it, and this put us off. We were very impressed with the layout of the hotel, it was gorgeous. We especially liked the glass sides in the lift, they went down well for the kids, and we had gorgeous views, of a waterfall in the reception area. The whole thing was just really well thought out, and even from the balcony every room got the same view; of the swimming pool, and if you look to the direction of the sea, you can see the sea through some of the rooms. Having exclusive access to the beach was ideal, if we wanted an easy day or something we only needed to stroll through past the swimming pool and go through the gates to the beach, it was convenient. Food-wise, I personally got bored of the breakfast. But that is because I am fussy. They had plenty of choice, from French rolls and cold meats, to fruit, to an attempt at an English breakfast! For the evening meal, the food varied every day, which was brilliant. They never had a shortage, everything was cooked well, and obviously they had a few Spanish dishes, as they are in Spain after all!! All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at the Portobello. It was perfect for us, and we are sure it will be just as perfect for hundreds of others."

"Hotel rooms were of a good size and standard, bathroom was kept very clean with clean towels every day. The hotel lacked atmosphere and was very impersonal, the staff did not speak or understand English when appropriate! Entertainment was promised on two separate occasions but was cancelled at the last minute. Room was very cold and when we requested some heat we were told it was the wrong time of year. The quilt in the bedroom was stained with urine when we arrived, we asked for it to be changed but it never happened. On two separate occasions I pointed out that the soup bowls in the restaurant were not clean and once I had to change a cup at breakfast because it was badly cracked. The indoor pool stated that it was heated, it was not, there was another indoor pool with a Jacuzzi which was heated, but we were told that to use this facility would cost 20 euros per hour each. Only the self service restaurant was open and the food was very poor and by no means 5 star, choices were very limited. The pool area and public areas inside the hotel were kept clean and tidy. Would I recommend this hotel to anyone else DEFINITELY NOT. "
