Situated in northern Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz is one of the most popular holiday resorts in the Canary Islands. Enjoying long, hot summers and milder winters than much of Europe, Puerto de la Cruz is a year-round holiday destination. Retaining its unique Canarian charm despite the large numbers of tourists who visit each year, the resort provides a relaxing alternative to the southern Tenerife party hotspots of Las Americas and Los Cristianos. Accommodation in Puerto de la Cruz ranges from basic self-catering apartments to luxurious 4-star all-inclusive hotels. The prevalence of package holidays in Puerto de la Cruz means accommodation books up quickly, so if you travel independently you may struggle to find somewhere to stay in peak season.
Puerto de la Cruz attracts a fairly sophisticated crowd who flock to the stunning volcanic sand beaches in the summer months. Known for its many and varied eating places, the town caters to all tastes. Budget fast-food establishments sit alongside quaint, traditional cafes and upmarket restaurants, meaning there is plenty of choice for even fussy eaters. The picturesque harbour is lined with charming food stalls selling traditional Spanish and Canarian delights. Even those on all-inclusive package holiday deals should try to sample some of the local dishes in the old port area. Food is an important part of holidays in Puerto de la Cruz, as the town is still very much a working fishing port. The harbour provides a wonderful setting in which to sit and enjoy a casual lunch while watching the local fishermen go about their daily business.
If you get tired of lazy days spent lying on the beach or sampling the fantastic local dishes, a visit to the fantastic Loro Parque zoo is great family day out. Although much of the focus is on marine life, the zoo is also home to chimpanzees, tigers and meerkats and the live demonstrations and displays are excellent.
