30 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
Not what it was!!!
"Having just returned from the Princess Hotel in La Palma, and having stayed there 10 years ago i just had to give my review. I read the reviews before booking in January this year, i was a bit sceptical because 10 years ago, the hotel, service, food and everything were 5* plus plus. It was delightful. This time the hotel, rooms, gardens and pools were still very good, the bar areas were delightful. The sunset still lovely. Being forewarned we took kettle, beakers, tea, coffee and sugar, didn't need my hairdryer. We went knowing the area and lack of outside facilities. We wanted a total chill out, which we had. So no complaints in all this. Walking the perimeter and daily swimming was all we wanted. NOW the differences. The hotel is so very much busier, even though it was only 2/3 full this time. I would NOT want to be there when it was full. The food was ok, i wouldn't put it as anything special, and it was a bit like a cattle market. If you are looking for a relaxing meal forget it. You would have to pay extra for the select dining room. The queues at the bar were sometimes a little annoying, but no busier than many bars over here. We went all inclusive and found the drinks quite acceptable, and the quantity is more than sufficient. We did not use the gym or facilities or the evening entertainment we also found the loud music, shouting and microphone of the daytime entertainment a little annoying. There were plenty of sun beds and plenty of room to find either sun or shade. The grounds themselves, or the buildings, i would not complain about at all, in fact i found them quite lovely. The staff are brilliant, working like little beavers and absolute Trojans. They are under great duress, a lot of it brought about by some of these reviews. They kept a smile on their faces, were polite and never stopped running!!!! There was just not enough of them to do the 5* job you expect, nor to provide the quality of food you might have expected. The choice of food was huge, maybe too much choice taking away from the quality. Particularly as my husband had a slight tummy upset on one day and i had megga d and V the day before leaving. As lovely as the place is i doubt we will go back. "

Poor Hygiene Standards
"Toilets by pools never cleaned in 10 days. Light bulb not replaced after 5 days even after being reported to reception. Areas around all pools not swept or mopped only around heated pool. Terrible stench of sewage all the time making you feel physically sick. Showers in ladies toilet flooded the floor never mopped so you had to paddle in a lot of water. Towels dumped anywhere from the gym users sometimes still on sunbeds after 3 days. Fuse blew all the lights in our room and had to wait for an electrician at 11.30pm. Full of Spanish everywhere and the hotel catered for them but not for the other nationalities of English, German and French. Evening disco was all Spanish music for them to Salsa to great if you like that but otherwise nothing again for the other nationalities. Would not recommend this hotel but would recommend La Palma if you stay elsewhere."

Fantastic Hotel-ruind by appalling Dining room
"The hotel and facilities here are superb. However we stayed 2 weeks in Feb.2016 and virtually lived on their good bread and fresh fruit. Our holiday was ruined by the state of the dining room and poorly prepared food. There was variety, but only rarely was the food well prepared and presented. The dirty plates were often not collected from the tables due to such low Staffing levels. The Head Waiter said that the waiters were merely plate movers,as he was himself. On one occasion we found a caterpillar in the lettuce-the Head waiter laughed and offered it back to us.On another occasion, one of the dishes at the evening meal had run out although the dining room had only been open for 40 minutes. In my view, salt cod is no substitute foe r smoked salmon. We were all inclusively booked-the dining room wine was awful, the fruit juice machine offered tasteless liquids, and the coffee machine issued very poor coffee. The bar coffee was a great improvement."

Is any where perfect ?
"My husband and I have stayed at this hotel several times and it really is good value for money. Yes it is isolated but the drive from the airport is stunning. Sit on the top terrace and watch the sun go down, magical. The food is of a reasonable standard with plenty of choice. The complex is steep and dark at night. Take a good torch. If you want tea and coffee, bring your own stuff. Very few European hotels have tea and coffee in the room. The daytime entertainment programs is very good, but the evening not always. My advice take plenty of reading material and download some programs on your i-pad . Mosquitoes and flies can be a problem, come prepared. You can only get WI-fi in the piano bar and you can only use one device, so think about what will be most useful. If you want to get out and about, take the bus to the nearby village and have a chat with the lady in the Tourist Information office. She speaks excellent English and is very nice. There may be plenty of super duper hotels out there, but you will pay through the nose. We have paid much more for much less in the past. This is good value for money, chill!"

"very clean and well maintained so far as rooms general grounds and lounge bars etc although lacking in service ie no bar to table service and most bar staff are not quick or well trained though they try with the exception of helga who was excellent and should be bar/service manager bit of a climb from pools to main bars and lobby but good for the legs what do you expect on a very hilly island ! food well cooked but chefs obviously have a budget bit like a cafe but its not an expensive resort so cant complain wine and beer very good if you want gordons or smirnoff you have to pay extra most people cant tell after a couple so who cares rooms clean and up to good standard layout bit maze like so far as blocks are concerned get used to this after a while this sounds a bit negative but weather is great and the island is so unspoilt and no one is anything other than friendly thomson rep jay was excellent and tours were great especially the one to the caldera and the observatories which was breathtaking no exageration all in all an unspoilt destination not being allowed to be mucked up by tourists if you like to unwind and like scenery especially volcanos and cheap food and beer go not too many of you though or it might get buggered up "

I really don't understand how people can complain about this place
"This is easily the best place I've ever stayed. Check in was quick even though there were 2 coach loads of people to get through. Lovely reception and bar area. Room spacious and spotless, bath and shower, which is unusual in many places. No smoking balconies. 11 pools, all stunningly maintained. Pool bar was excellent, nice snacks, Drinks, potent, certainly they are not stingy on the measures! It is out of the way but people know this so basically only stay here if 1) you enjoy staying in the hotel complex or b) you are going to hire a car. Nothing quite beats supping a beer at the bar whilst looking out to the sea. Beach is about 20mins away but its a black sand beach which is not for everyone. Scenery is stunning and I would wholly recommend hiring a car to see the caldera and the other volcanic features. Food was fine, loads of choices and about 3 hours of meal time so there was never a rush to get food. I cant understand people saying you are treated as second class citizens for being all inclusive. We were always greeted pleasantly and I never noticed any favourtism of any kind. I would recommend this to anyone, except perhaps young people who enjoy their nightlife, you would probably find this place boring but I loved the peace and quiet personally and I will be going back I'm sure."

Excellent good value for money....
"An excellent hotel I went from 25th november to 09th december 2011... the food was of excellent quality....Marcello the bar man who ran the bar during the day was funny, warm friendly, and helpfull...as where the reception staff..all of whom put themselves out to help ..Yes The hotel is in a remote location but, if thats not your cup of tea dont visit....and also read the brochure... Many people complained about the black sand!!! Its The Canary Islands and they are made up of vulcanos hence the black sand ...the hotel room is large my room was spot on and spacious, with a large queen size bed 8 x 8 ...and yes I had a balcony and, no the view was not great it overlooked the swimming pool and health spa.. but,I was not intending to live in my room only sleep in it. Travel... use the public bus to get to Santa Cruz via Fuenticaliente or as its called the village.. for 4 euros each way .. you can travel to either Santa Cruz or Los Llanos...or to el Faro the abandoned light house will cost 1.30euro from the hotel...the food was of high quality and a lot of it with different dishes each day,the waiter/waitress service was very good.. the MtrD was also very helpfull and kept a watchfull eye on the dining area..The animacion team work hard at their job, not just during the day, but in the evening as well (many thanks to christina)....the health spa which I used once to have may hair cut and washed is very impressive, clean and tidy.. and yes I have read the other reviews and they have left myself wondering if we are talking of the same hotel and staff as I found nothing to complain about...There are three tours that I would strongly recommend (1) roque de los muchachos.. (2)the national park ..and (3) the tour to the rainforest, all very stunning tours, and you also have a guide on these tours (Rudy) who is very knowledgeable. All in all a very good holiday, which had all the ingredients that as a person I required.. ..Note there are no night clubs on the island which was not an issue for myself...but might be for other people...I would strongly recommend La Palma as a holiday destination..as long as you the reader remember (1) it is remote and very quite (2) you can catch the bus and go sight seeing, this way you do see more of the island..(3) you can also Island hop on an internal flight,Tenerife being the closest and cheapest,to fly to from La Palma Airport (4) and a must do on your list, visit San Antonio Vulcano and walk around the lip of the volcano. The Hotel La Palma Princess I would give 10/10 for comfort, food and overall ambience and service..also excellent entertainment in the evening..many thanks to all the staff who work in the la Palma Hotel who ,helped make this a very memorable holiday. ..I hope this review is of help to future travellers?."

dont go all inclusive
"had a very disappointing holiday over christmas and new year the highlight was coming home.if you decide to go to this hotel do not go as an all inclusive visitor you are treated as second class and at times it is very difficult to get served. The entertainment is 45 mins each night of sub standard quality and not worth watching, the food is very average buffet very similar every day - the all inclusive food offer during the day is inedable, the all inclusive drink is all local products most very average, the service for all inclusive is 1/2star you are definately looked down the nose at by most staff and management.unless you want a very quiet uninspiring holiday do not come here, the in hotel rep for tompsons was not interested in many of the issues raised by many of the guests and was quite frankly rude to people.glad to go home"

second visit will never return
"having been before cannot believe how much the place has deteriorated. The first visit was good feb 2010 but could not believe the standards could change so much in nine months the guest service both from the rep and in the restaurant has gone from good to very poor, most communal areas have much poorer standards there seemed to be far fewer staff and on many occasions it was difficult to get served. if you are all inclusive despite already paying out for everything you are treated as second class citizens and many charges are added for additional options which should be all inclusive.will never return!!! any suggest you book elsewhere as we will in future"

Great for a romantic break
"Just got back from our honeymoon here, where we had one week all inclusive. The hotel is beautifully equiped, food is varied and cooked to a high standard and included on one evening roast suckling pig which was out of this world. Staff are in the main helpful and polite and we had a fantastic time. I am not sure i could have managed two weeks basking by the pool as there is little else to do although the evening entertainment was of a generally good standard, the spanish elvis and the chinese acrobats were a particular highlight... the sound of "ju ain nuttin but a hotdog" will live long in the memory. All in all if you want a completely relaxing get away from it all break, this place is perfect. If you want to be in the middle of a busy resort with loads of bars restaurants and clubs dont go here. "

"My parents, my husband and myself stayed at the hotel for 2 weeks at the end of April beginning of May. I have not experienced a place so isolated. There is absolutely nothing there, no beach nearby so no where to enjoy a walk and maybe buy a coffee or a beer. We found the food to be at best poor. During our stay there was a beauty pagent with spanish boys and girls taking part. The food really went down hill then. The hotel and grounds were really nice and clean. Our room was in block 5 which was hard to find as we found no sign posts. It is no good for people who have mobility issues. Everywhere there are steep slopes and steps even to get to the pools and for lunch time. If you wanted an all inclusive burger at lunch that is what you got, a burger in a bun. If you paid 5 euros you got chips and salad with your burger. "
