Aparthotel Riu Flamingo
22 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"We booked direct with RIU and got a reasonable price for a late booking. We booked a 1 bed apartment which was overlooking the RIU Waikiki next door. The room was basic 2 hobs a fridge and all the cutlery you could wish for.....This is supposed to be a 4 * rated place, but there was no kettle, toaster, microwave Ive stayed in better 2 key places.
They supply an iron from reception but there only seems to be 2 irons for the whole hotel, and no ironing board either...so its the towel on the coffee table time again. UKTV is a no-no its the usual SKY news and BBC World for those who cannot live without UKTV! This does get on your nerves!
The beds were rock solid and i personally slept on the couch for 5 nights and I was constantly waking up on those horrid beds!
The good points:
Staff are excellent, friendly and very knowledgeable, cleaning of rooms was good and towels galore! Shower also did the job, for the ladies, the hairdryer was quite weak so those of you with goldilocks hair...beware and take your own!
The apartments are a great size though!
Pool area was very nice and secluded from the road outside with a plethera of sunbeds but get them early if you want them to be in the sunshine! Also waiters will offer drinks service at your sunlounger!! (nice touch)
Good location 2 mins to Gran Chapperal and about 7 mins walk to Yumbo and to Kasbah. Taxis a plenty on the left of the entrance.
Free bus service to beach, early morning then it stopped about 12pm until 15.00pm.
Would I stay here again.....?
No, there are far better equipped apartments for cheaper and less * ratings."

"I stayed at the hotel for a couple of days during New Year. The hotel had a nice pool & reception but the room décor was hopelessly outdated. Moreover, the bathroom was not very fresh and I had problems with the shower. I found that price/quality was not satisfactory."

Had a great time at the Riu Flamingo
"Stayed at the Riu Flamingo 1-8 Sept and had a great time.
Booked a 1 bed apartment which was good with plenty of drawers and wardrobe space! The kitchenette was adequate if you only wanted to snack (remember to pack a travel kettle if you fancy the odd tea or coffee) The bathroom was a good size and had both a shower and bath. The balcony was large, plenty of room to leave your lilo ! Couldnt fault the maids as the room was always clean and tidy with fresh towels if you needed them.
The pool was a nice size and there were always spare loungers.
Didnt really eat at the hotel except for a couple of snacks at the poolside bar, the food there was excellent.
Went down to the beach for breakfast as there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars to choose from. Similarly for dinner we either went to the beach area or the Yumbo Centre which was always good for a laugh. Plenty of entertainment in the evening but a shopping centre by day.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is happy to stay a few minutes walk from the beach and busy night time areas. It was nice to be in the centre of things for the evening but then be able to walk away and leave the noise behind you!
All in all a fantastic holiday."

Got everything you need!
"I stayed at Riu Flamingo 8-15 Sept with a group of 6 ladies age range 25-29
We had a room for 3 adults which had twin beds and a sofa bed - with the sofa bed setup the room in pretty small. Large balcony though, with view to Riu Waikiki pool area.
Room is ok, with kitchenette and decent sized bathroom. Its not 4* by UK standards, all very basic furnitire.
Pool area was nice, the hotel does appear to cater to more German travellers and also over 40's age group. We felt a little out of place as a group of youngsters!!
Riu Waikiki is definitely more lively than Flamingo - lots of action going on by the pool - we didn't venture over.
There is a nice restaurant nearby called Gurapo, good paella!
I wouldn't go back to Playa Del Ingles, it was good for a fun week in the sun with the girlies - but I don't like restaurants with a 'chips with everything' menu and there were too many PR's trying to drag you in for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks!!
Hard Rock Cafe near Yumbo centre also does good food.
If you want a cheap week in the sun at a more decent hotel for the resort....this would be your best bet."

Excellent hotel and resort
"I have just returned from the Riu Flamingo where I stayed for two weeks with my boyfriend. I had never been to Gran Canaria before and had an amazing time there! We stayed in the Riu Flamingo self catering apartments, the rooms were very clean and a good size, the cleaners came everyday and did a fantastic job. The staff were very friendly, professional and helpful and spoke very good English/German. The hotel is in an ideal location in the centre of the resort, the Kasbah and Yumbo commercial centres are just around the corner and the beach is only about 15 minutes walk away. There's a courtesy bus to the beach which stops outside the hotel next door every 30 minutes, however we found it just as quick to walk.
The hotel had a very relaxing atmosphere, there were plenty of sunlougers/parasols available by the pool throughout the day, so we didnt have to worry about getting up early to get a sunbed. The pool was very clean and a good size, it is also very shallow in most areas which is good for children. There was a children's pool but the hotel didn't have any entertainment/activities/childrens clubs etc during the day, which I really liked as it was peaceful, but small children may be bored here.
Playa Del Ingles is a very busy resort, which I really liked as there were plenty of things to do, although it's very easy to get lost - as we did a few times! There are plenty of bars, discos and restaurants, which are all pretty cheap for food and drink, you could stay here for a month and still not see everything! The busiest bars and clubs are in the Kasbah centre, which I really enjoyed but they can get a little packed and overwhelming. The more relaxing bars and restaurants are along the beach, which is where we went most nights for a meal.
Overall it was a very relaxing, enjoyable holiday and the weather was fantastic - two weeks of blue skies and sunshine! I would recommend if coming to Playa Del Ingles for the first time not to look at weather reports from Las Palmas (the capital) as the climate is alot different there. Most sites including BBC weather show Gran Canaria as being cloudy and windy etc, however Playa Del Ingles is actually alot warmer and sunnier. Average temperatures when we were there were about 32-4 degrees in the day and 22-4 degrees at night.
I would definately come to this hotel again!"

"Stayed here with the in-laws in October, 2005. Very nice hotel with good & varied selection of food. Great pool - very easily accessible via a ramp for the disabled. Friendly staff. A little distant from the sea-front (a problem generally in this resort). Hotel very clean with few children in evidence. Pretty cosmoplitan - don't go if you only want to be surrounded by English compatriots. Would stay at this hotel again but would need to be persuaded to spend a third holiday in Playa del Ingles."

Great Hotel and Resort
"Had a very relaxing week at the Riu Flamingo, even with our 2 lively children in tow.
The rooms were fairly basic, but spotless and ideal in size. You won't get a kettle though, but can hire one for 12 euros per week.
The pool area is great with free towels to use on a daily basis. Be careful however if your idea of fun is diving and jumping into the pool. Its only about a metre deep in most places.
The reception staff were fantastic. They couldn't do enough for you and always made a point of fussing the children.
This is a multi national hotel with a mix of English, German, Dutch, French and Spanish guests and we were by far the minority. This didn't cause any major problems, but the bar staff did struggle to understand at times, which is reasonable with 5 languages to contend with.
The resort itself has something for everyone. There are 2 shopping/bar areas which become very lively at night and are probably more suited to younger singles or couples. They are also the place to practice your haggling skills, ie don't pay what they ask, aim for about half that.
We went to the water park for a day and loved it. I'd recommend that you go early as the queues start getting longer after lunch.
If you are a beach lover (which we're not), then this is definately he place for you. The beach is that big that there are sand dunes at one end. It takes about 20 minutes to walk there and if you don't fancy that, then a free bus service is provided by the hotel. We enjoyed a few drinks and something to eat down there on a couple of occasions. We may not like sand but you can't beat the views.
A very enjoyable holiday and I imagine we'll go again"

"Stayed at this hotel in April 2006 and had a fab time.
the staff are wonderful-very helpful with any enquiries that we through at them. they were more helpful that our tour reps!
the hotel is very clean, maid service every day, clean towels every day and clean beds every other day. take a travel kettle with you as there arn`t any in the room.
loads of sunbeds and brollies, complimentry pool towels from reception each day.
evening entertainment was ok needed a bit more live acts, not just records playing.
eating out was great we found some great resturants, especialy the Britiania in the Gran Chapperal, we had FISH CHIP AND MUSHY PEAS, AND ALSO SUNDAY ROAST LUNCH FOR DINNER, just like home!
the Yumbo and the Kasbah are within easy reach, about 15mins walk away.
we had such a great time were going back next year it was so relaxing."

Had a good time @ Flamingo
"Visited Gran Canaria and stayed at Riu Flamingo on three separate occasions. Best rooms are the ones with garden/pool view. Everytime we have stayed, we have had this type of room which is clean, comfortable and great to sit out and have a chill-out drink before hitting the various Bars in the Yumbo Centre. Rooms come equipped with fridge, kettle and safety deposit boxes.
Staff at the Hotel are curteous and helpful and sometimes more help than the Travel Reps!!
Pool is fabulous and large with a separate section for toddlers with plenty of complimentary sunbeds, parasols, mattresses and towels (ask at Reception). Snack area by the Pool has a wide selection of food and drinks and if you are sitting by the pool there is constant waiter service.
Location is convenient for Supermarkets for drinks and bottle beers to put in your fridge. Within easy walking distance of Irish Centre, English Centre and Yumbo Centre. The Market has reduced in size over the four years and is cheaper getting a taxi rather than using a Tour Operator excursion but we do suggest you go around 10.00 a.m. If you like Cuban Cigars, this is the place to see hand-rolled Cigars for sale @ 1Euro each!!"

overall a great holiday with a few mishaps
"Just spent a week in the riu du flamingo hotel. After reading all the positive reviews we thought it was going to be a great, carefree holiday. For a start we arrived to find the hotel reception staff very unpolite and a few of them hard to understand. We had to sign a few things before being allowed our room key along with signing to say we had received a safe key although we told them we did not want one. Because we signed for it we therefore had to pay for the safe use at the end of our hotel even though we explained we did not want one, when we tried to explain the misunderstanding with the reception staff, we found him to be very rude and unhelpful, unlike most of the other reviews stating how helpful the staff were, we did not see this helpfulness at all during our stay from the reception staff. The shop on site is also very expensive and also found the staff members in here miserable and unapproachable! The hotel is a real mix of people from large groups of young people to couples and also families.
We booked to stay self catering, although the self catering facilities are extremely poor. Only 2 hobs to cook on, no oven, toaster or kettle and a fridge that couldnât keep food like milk fresh for very long. This then meant that we spent more on eating out every night which wasnât really a problem as restaurants are all within walking distance and had a variety of cheap meals to choose from. On average we spent around 22 euros a night for 2 people including drinks! It was lucky that we had taken extra money in case as when booking a self catering holiday we expected to âself caterâ however the facilities did not allow us to do this.
The hotel itself is very clean with a maid service every day. Maids were very trustworthy with your stuff and were the friendliest members of staff in the hotel. Pool was also kept very clean along with plenty of sunbeds, although on one day we did have to wait a little while for sunbeds to become free. The hotel is in a good location also- far enough to not here the nightlife but close enough to go to it if you wanted to. It is a five- ten minute walk from both the Kasbah and yumbo centre which are both good fun during the night time and great places to grab a bite to eat. Only problem with the nightlife we found was that the men from the different bars and clubs try and encourage you to come into their bars and club by saying you get a free drink for every drink you buy. You will also be harassed about going on pub crawls costing around 25-45 euros. You should not go on these as you can do these on your own for free. We found as there was only 2 of us on holiday we shouldnât walk back to the hotel alone as we are both females , so we got a taxi home in the early hours of the morning for 2 euros 70 with very trust worthy taxi drivers. Also note that if walking around where the bars are keep a watch out for glass on the floor as on our first day we were not aware of this and had an accident with some glass in the foot. Overall it was a good holiday and would give the hotel a 3 out of 5! If it were for the improved self catering facilities and more friendly staff we would have given it a 5. "

Very good, would say more 3* than 4*
"Hotel was very clean, well looked after. Staff were extremely friendly, helpful and look very interested in guests. Lacking slightly in self catering facilities i.e. didnt have microwave, oven or brush for general cleaing. Only a hob and usual items. Cleaned every day and towels and beddig changed everyday!!!
Within walking distance of bars, restaurants and beach. Walk to san fernando for food shopping, its just over the bridge.
All in all great hotel, clean with friendly staff and in a great location :) "

"Very friendly and helpful staff, five star bar and lounge facilities. Aparthotel rooms are indeed somewhat dated but comfortable enough. Spotlessly cleaned every day with fresh towels. It is a bit annoying there is no kettle in the rooms but a very minor point. No problems getting sunbeds and fresh towels for the pool available daily.
Didn't have dinner here but a vast quantity of food for all tastes at breakfast which at 10 euros is well worth it. Room safe is 13 euros. Drinks in the bar are hotel prices but it is waiter service and they are very generous with the measures!
Very few Brits stay here - Germans, Scandinavians, Swiss and even Croats
Tennis and table tennis plus hire of equipment free of charge. Also a couple of pool tables and Air Hockey at 1 euro.
Overall - fantastic value for money and would definitely recommend."
