poor food

Reviewed 17th May 2011

"hotel was spotless and had good facilities. Good variety of food but it was barely warm and never cooked to order. Vegetables were soggy and barely warm. we booked an excursion through the hotel but the coach never arrived to pick us up, hotel could not have cared less and only acted when we insisted they do something but we still had to pay. The all inclusive tarriff included one meal in the a la carte restuarant but we did not get a la carte food. we were given a fixed menu with no choice which was worse than we had been having. I would not rate this as a 5 star hotel only a 3 star. We went there to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and were very disappointed."

Relaxing family holiday

Reviewed 10th March 2011

"Large hotel - good for families of all ages and mature couples. Would not be a great choice for a romatic break. The swimming pools are excellent - one so well heated it was like a taking a warm bath. Grounds are also beautiful and well stocked with tropical plants. Food was varied and generally good, though the dining area is brightly lit and rather like a busy canteen, which I was fine at breakfast, but not exactly a relaxing way to enjoy dinner. Our room was clean and comfortable. Some parts of the hotel were shabby and in need of recarpeting / paint. The staff were efficient, but always appeared rushed and in short supply. This may explain their generally abrupt attitude - with a few exceptions. The reception staff were less than welcoming. "

Not five star

Reviewed 11th November 2009

"My wife ana I have just come back from 10 days at this hotel. What we expected from a five star hotel and what we actually got are far removed. The hotel is past its sell by date. The reception area looks and feels like a station waiting room and the reception staff are not very helpful when one arrives at 1:30 a.m. Many public areas are scruffy with worn seats and carpets particularly in the corridors. Our room also was scruffy and never valeted properly. some days it would be between 2 pm and 3pm before it was serviced. The main evening meal was for the most part dreadful with one or two exceptions. I never once had a piece of meat that one could eat always tough, things like pigs liver are not really what one wants to eat on holiday. The sweets were generally a concoction of cheap and nasty little cakes and yucky puddings. plenty of fresh fruit though, and salads but you cant live on these entirely. Many of the sun loungers were either broken or dirty. Whatever else this hotel may be it is DEFINATELY NOT FIVE STAR. So dont be fooled."

Amazing Holiday!

Reviewed 18th June 2009

"This holiday was absolutely fantastic! My boyfriend and I went here last year for a week and just wanted to chill out. This hotel is brilliant for that kind of holiday and has so many amazing points. The first point is how relaxing it is to not have to worry about getting up and getting a sunbed as even at lunch time there were still plenty of sunbeds around and plenty of space in the pool area to not feel squashed up next to other people sunbathing. The food in both the pool bar and the main restaurant buffet area is gorgeous with things to have at lunch like toasted sandwiches, burgers etc to then being in the restaurant at night and having so much choice every day. The show cooking is fabulous and they will make fresh eggs, omlettes (with lots off different fillings) if you so wish in the mornings to then doing all different kinds of meat at night. Never got bored of what was on offer to eat and at some points my eyes were bigger than my stomach as i could not get enough of the different desserts on offer! The hotel is located perfectly with the sea directly in front of the hotel and the beach in front of the hotel is beautiful and has lots of little bars and restaurants on it which are all really nice. The beach which was my favourite was the maspalomas beach where many sand dunes are found and the sand and sea were also really nice. We went into Playa d'Ingles for a night which I thought was great-really good vibe and even though a party place and full of nightclubs and pubs it was really clean and no brawls in the streets! The only thing which was a bit of a nightmare was the touts trying to get you into the pubs etc but we just said no and they left us alone. The prices of taxi fares are really good with it costing about 3 euros to go to Maspalomas Beach and 5 Euros to get into Playa d'Ingles. The rooms are huge and the bed is also huge and really comfortable, the maids come and change your sheets and towels everyday which was really good. In every possible way this hotel caters for all needs and it is the best hotel that I have stayed in and I would definitely go back again for another fabulous relaxing holiday!"

Just returned and can honestly say that ...

Reviewed 17th June 2008

"Just returned and can honestly say that this hotel lives up to its 5* rating. Food - once we got into the routine we made the most of the buffet breakfast and dinner. The choice was enough for us to always find something we liked - and the cakes... well, they were just great. Suggest you visit the chef at the carvery first, and then the buffet displays... Coutesy coach to the lighthouse runs regularly every day and drops you off right by the sand dunes. The Hotel location is away from the main bar/restaurant area, but it's only a 15 min walk and you are in the thick of it. Personally we preffered the seclusion and ability to pick & choose when we went to the lively end of the resort. Taxi's are very good value - about 5 euro's to the very lively Playa Del Ingles - pubs, clubs etc. and taxi's are v.easy to get. One word of caution, we booked the so called "VIP" island tour (via Cosmos) supposed to be an executive minibus tour guide Island tour & lunch included. It was actually 7 minibuses, not really executive but o.k. and each buse had a CB radio with the tour guide in the lead bus with a microphone!... 7 buses on the road - looks like we got us a convoy! The worst part was the lunch, totally unedible and the cost was 59 euros each - beware... But this review is about the hotel which we highly recommend & hope to go back to sometime in the future.. Oh nearly forgot, it was my birthday during our stay, and the hotel "sneaked" champaigne and a note into our room whilst we were out. They must have seen my dob on the passport - that's the kind of attention to detail you can expect. "

Reviewed 18th May 2008

"The hotel itself is very beautiful with an interesting design. It felt to me like a set from a bond movie! Mostly the staff we excellent with only minor exceptions. The location of the hotel itself is quite isolated but everything you actually need is on site and the walk into town only took 20 mins along the coast. The rooms were excellent and the whole hotel was very clean, and the gardens were beautiful. There was a huge choice of food and is was of a satisfactory standard. Maybe because I went just out of season it occasionally it took a while to get served at the bars. However on a down side the entertainment was dire and there were no tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms which I found very inconvenient as I didn't always want to go to the cafe or restaraunt to get a drink. Overall it didn't quite feel like a five star hotel, maybe more like a four."

Reviewed 15th August 2007

"My boyfriend and I went for a weeks stay at the end of July and we definately weren't disappointed. The hotel itself looks fantastic, the gardens surrounding it even more so and the rooms offered everything you would expect from a 5*. With a choice of three excellent swimming pools there was no fighting for sun loungers, and although we didn’t visit it, the beach was literally only a few minutes walk away across the road from the hotel (not a busy road either!). The staff were friendly and efficient, we had a problem with the plug in our bath and after a phone call someone came to fix it immediately. We cannot fault the maids who left our room immaculate each day; we were even left a complimentary fruit basket and wine. The buffet style breakfast and dinner offered an excellent selection, each day themed. The freshly squeezed orange juice you can get in the morning is particularly good when you think how much you pay for a small glass at home, however what you do pay a lot for here is water unless you go to buy your own from Maspolomas town (10 min walk) or the gym in the Wellness Centre. A bottle of water in the dining hall costs 3 euros, the gym also costs 3 euros but you can drink all the water you want from the dispenser here and use the facilities which are fantastic. It costs extra to use the Wellness pool, sauna, steam room, ice room etc. but is well worth it after a heavy night out for instance! This 'heavy night' or pub crawl we went on in Playa de Ingles was organised through First Choice, as was the camel ride, market visit and boat trip. It's definately worth going to the welcome meeting as you will be told about all these events which we thought were really good value and offered something for everyone, although it's cheaper to make your own way to the Water Park by taxi. The beach we were recommended to visit over in Puerto Rico called Amadores was gorgeous, if you get the chance it is well worth a visit, if not then for the watersports- the taxis really are cheap and frequent. Whether you want to relax in the tranquil surroundings or go out and have some fun there is something for everyone here, couples or families alike! It definately deserves its 5*. "

"What can I say about this hotel except that it is stunning, inside and out. We spent a week there as a surprise for my husbands 30th birthday. Lovely staff, lovely place, a place to relax. Stunning views. A must is the wine bar down at the beach it is built up quite high above the shopping mall. We have fond memories just looking over the sea with a large glass of red wine. bliss. Will most defiantly be visiting again soon. "

"This was our first holiday abroad together and also our honeymoon, so we had high expectations for this 5 star hotel and I have to say that we were not disappointed, the room was turned into a honeymoon suite for us, the maid service was impeccable. The hotel itself was beautiful, alot of stairs though, I would recommend this hotel at this time of year if you want a quite break, and it began to get busy just before we left. All of the staff were very friendly and eager to please. We had a wonderful time and I would like to go back for our 5th Anniversary, and I am sure that if we do we will be looked after as well as we were on our honeymoon."

Reviewed 8th May 2006

"Gives the impression of being an older hotel than it actually is due mainly to its dated York Stone appearance. That said, the reception area and lounges were attractive and spacious, the staff polite friendly and attentive and the grounds and swimming pools (several) were very clean, well kept and spacious. The rooms too were very clean, well appointed and spacious although ours was about a 5 minute walk from reception. Good sized balcony and bathroom area. All air conditioned. Plenty of room for sun bathing and swimming and for the kids to play in. There was a Wellness centre offering a gym and treatments, tennis and sports courts and no lack of facilities all meticulously clean. The hotel was situated in a quiet location about 5 minutes walk from the sea and a small beach and to a new shopping centre which is not open yet. I would think that in a year or so this area will become a lot more popular and busy. There is a new golf course just a short way from the hotel and the main shopping centre of Faro and Maspalomas are only about 30 minutes stroll away. Plenty of bars and restaurants nearby and in the hotel itself. They could do with a waiter service by the pool although this might be available in high season. The main restaurant was the most disappointing feature for us. The food was 'plentiful' but we found it hard to identify due to a lack of decent labeling, not particularly warm, repetitive and a little bland. There was a definite shortage of staff and we mostly had to find our way to a vacant and clean table. We also had to sometimes ask for clean crockery and cutlery and the staff were slow to refill some of the more popular dishes. There was another restaurant in the hotel serving meals Ala carte at additional cost but we didn't fancy the choice and it wasn't cheap. We found we rarely ate anything at the same time as one of us was off searching for the butter whilst the other, looking for a soup spoon. All in all though we would have no hesitation recommending this hotel. We certainly did not starve and we had an enjoyable relaxing holiday in clean, beautiful surroundings. The evening entertainment was more than adequate and the Animation Team worked tirelessly to entertain people of all ages."

Reviewed 30th September 2005

"Superb hotel in a quiet location worthy of 5 stars. No good for anyone seeking plenty of nightlife as it is very peaceful. The little extras provided by the hotel make the difference. Staff are excellent and the food is very good (buffet for half board or a la carte for payment).Several swimming pools and facilities for kids . It is a large hotel spread over a lot of ground with facilities to match. Bars and restaurants are a 100 metres away on the beach front or you can go to Faro which hosts a shopping centre as well as restaurants and bars 20 minutes walking distance along a promenade. Highly recommended. "
