Quiet bolt-hole from the city

Reviewed 21st August 2009

"Our stay at the Husa Mar was for one night after ending a cruise in Barcelona, and although the hotel was not perfect it had much to recommend it. As a family of four (parents and two teenagers) we were allocated two adjoining rooms, as requested, with an interconnecting door that the staff promised to unlock for us if we wished! Our rooms on the fifth floor were adequately comfortable and all was clean; there were flat-screen TVs and hair-dryers available. The hotel is situated in the Diagonal Mar area, a little way out from the bustle of the centre. The metro station of Selva de Mar is about 5 minutes' walk up the road and the hotel staff were helpful in their directions, not only to the metro but also showing us the easiest way to get to the Nou Camp for a stadium tour. There is a supermarket within a couple of minutes' walk also. Down the road to the coast takes you to the beach, very much a 'city centre' beach but clearly popular with locals and also holidaymakers of all nationalities. Several small bars and a restaurant can be found here, and the shopping mall at Diagonal Mar (also a short walk away) contains a floor of 'food-hall' type eating places as well as a good selection of shops. The city centre can easily be reached by metro or by taxi (5-10 minutes), and the plentiful fish restaurants of Barceloneta are only a few metro stops away. The 'pool' area is in fact more of a roof garden, being an area covered with astroturf and decked out with metal chairs and tables only, but there is a wooden-panelled pool which was in use for the first day of our arrival. Sadly on the second day the pool door could not be unlocked, as the key was jammed, and as it was a fiesta that day I doubt it was unlocked before the evening! I must also pay tribute to the hotel staff, not all of whom could speak English fluently but who could not be faulted in their efforts to be helpful. When I enquired about internet access to check in online for our flights home, and mentioned that I didn't really need as much as a full hour of paid internet time, the receptionist took the time and trouble to check us in using his desktop. All in all we found the Husa Mar well situated, clean, comfortable and helpful - but don't go if a rooftop pool is your priority!"
