A Travel Agents View
"I am writing in response to the very negative review that was give by John and his partner regarding their Suite not be available at 10.00 am in the morning, I am sorry but where on earth did they get the idea that it would be, as most check out times in hotels all over the world is 10.00 am and then the housekeeping have to go in and clean the room, change the bedding etc. I hate to think what they would have said if they had been let in the room before 2.00 pm and not of this had been done, some hotels you are told your hotel won't be available until 3.00 pm. I have stayed in Villas in Menorca and know they aren't available until 2.00 pm at the earliest and we have done our basic shopping needs on the way to Villa and stopped for a snack on the way if we have an early flight. No hotels need this kind of bad review from someone with obviously no respect for standards and procedures in hotels.

Week in Menorca
"We have just returned from a week at the Port Ciutadella Hotel in Menorca. The hotel is excellent with very good facilities. The pool area is well maintained and is very peaceful as it is not a large hotel and there seemed to be plenty of sun beds. The staff are friendly and helpful when needed. There is a very calm atmosphere about the hotel so ideal for a relaxing holiday. Ours was a last-minute booking so unfortunately we had a room on the back which I wouldn't recommend as these rooms are very overlooked by the new apartments opposite. Lucky for us these were not yet occupied but, when they are, the rooms and balconies on the back of the hotel are not very private.
We had the half-board option and found the food to be varied with plenty of choice and very well presented.
The only downside for us was that there was no outside space (apart from the pool) so nowhere to sit in the shade to read etc.
I would definitely recommend this hotel but would advise a room on the side or the front to take advantage of the view - there is none on the back.
Ciutadella of course is a terrific place to visit with plenty of places of interest and wonderful restaurants. We enjoyed sitting by the harbour most evenings with a bottle of wine as we had fantastic weather. Our favourite bar was Es Moll on the harbourside.
All in all, a most enjoyable holiday."

"On arrival you are greeted by smiling receptionists who efficiently register you and help you to get your bearings ie location of your room, restruarant, pool etc. The pool areas is lovely, very peaceful with plenty of sun loungers. You are provided with pool towels and refrehingly people don't seem to bag their beds at 6am in the morning. We used to go there after breakffast at about 9.30/10am and we always had a choice. The choice at breakfast is fantastic and the bar areas are great to. Good customer service all round. Its quiet and maybe not a place for children especially teenagers.
there are 2 walking routes into the town, one takes around 10/15 minutes and is a bit dull, the other along the coast line is lovely but takes around 25/30 minutes. The port is great, feels very spanish with lots of restaruants lining the waters edge.
I would recommend the hotel and the port, great place! "

"I would certainly recommend Port Cuitadella Hotel. We spent two weeks there and thoroughly enjoyed it, although the weather was a bit "iffy". The room/suite was excellent; the hotel itself not too big, i.e. big enough to get to know most people on a "good morning" basis; the situation excellent - we had a lovely room overlooking the Cala. Also, it was just a ten-minute walk into Cuitadella itself; the breakfasts were excellent with an enormous choice of food; the staff were courteous and attentive and the maid service was excellent.
All in all, an excellent hotel."

"I couldn't disagree more with the last reviewer on this site. Have just returned from a fabulous break in the hotel. All the staff were absolutely delightful, despite the fact that neither myself nor my daughter speak any Spanish. The room, public rooms, food, bar, swimming pool, spa etc were all first class - and at this time of year it represents fantastic value. I strongly recommend people to try this hotel - I don't think you'll be disappointed. "

One of the best!
"This hotel is great! It has all the class without been snobey, which we have found in some other boutique hotels. The postion of the hotel could not be better, just on the outskirts of the city but within walking distance of just about everything it has to offer, fantastic restaurants and bars as well as alot of culture. The rooms are quite minimalistic, very nicely decorated with a flat screen tv over the bed, bathrooms have twin sinks and all have a jacuzzi jet bath. The rest of the hotel, like the rooms is modern. There is an excellent bar with tables looking over the sea and the staff are very friendly.
The hotel also has a spa with gym, sauna, steam room, indoor pool and jacuzzi all free to the guests all you have to pay for are treatments which were not very expensive. Most of the time we were the only guests in the spa.
As we did not have diner in the hotel we can not comment but if it is anything like the food at breakfast, it has to be excellent!
All in all a fantistic stay will be back next year and every year for a few days!"

Oasis of tranquility
"This is a gem of a hotel if you are looking for a holiday outside of a typical tourist area.
It is located on the outskirts of the old town of ciudadela overlooking a small sea inlet. There are a few small cafe/restaurants nearby but the main town is only a short 10 minute walk away.
We booked bed and breakfast only but ended up eating 10 of the 14 nights in the hotel restaurant. The choice on offer was excellent given that it was only 14 euros a head.
The hotel was smart and extremely clean. The staff were friendly and very efficient and the facilities first rate.
As a wheelchair user I also found access in and around the hotel excellent."

well run hotel - pity about the restuarant
"The hotel Port Ciutadella is a well run hotel with excellent, friendly staff, comfortable rooms and a good pool & other facilities. Sadly the evening meals are not of 4star quality. Some of the chicken dishes were under cooked and their idea of gaspacho would give an Andulician the horrors. Other wise the service in the restuarant at both Breakfast & Dinner, although buffet style, was excellent.
The area to the west & behind the hotel has a series of about 10 or more building sites in varying states of construction.
Whilst taxis are cheap & easy to obtain from the hotel reception, it is a long 15 - 20 minute walk to the town centre."

I would not recommend this Hotel for a h...
"I would not recommend this Hotel for a holiday in Menorca. I would suggest that this hotel specialises in making guests, other than those of Spanish origin, feel inferior.
It does not appear to make any allowances for guests arriving or leaving at all times of day. We arrived at 10 a.m after a great flight, wonderful reception from our Sovereign concierge and marvellous transport to our hotel, to be told by reception that our room was not ready.
Apparently the people occupying our room did not have to leave until 12 noon. This was because we had booked a suite, stupid of us I know, but as we had paid quite a lot extra for this extravagance to enjoy our holiday in style and make the most of our first day by arriving early in the morning as we were only staying for a week - we were made to feel as if the fact our room wasn't ready was our fault!
We were obviously not dressed for the sun and it was only at my husbandâs insistence that we couldn't stay in our travelling clothes that the receptionist said we could change in the Spa.
We did that and left our cases with Reception and went out for a walk - returning at 12.30 to be told that our room was still not ready. At 1.30 we were offered a free drink after visiting Reception again - room still not ready!!! I should add that each time we visited reception we were not recognised and were asked what we wanted each time.
The suite was ready at 2 p.m. - four hours after arriving at the hotel. Before we were given the key however we had to prove that we had paid for a suite! An accommodation voucher was demanded which we had never had, so a photocopy of our tickets was taken because - she told us - the hotel was paid a bonus for the suite. I believe she meant that of course a suite cost extra.
Of course we knew that but surely it was not for us to prove that we had paid for it - surely their contract was with Sovereign and should have been sorted out with them if there was a problem.
Now feeling like complete criminals we found our way to our suite.
No gripes there - it was lovely - very contemporary so all furniture was of modern design - so no drawers or cupboards other than those in the wardrobe. The view was great and so suite did score highly.
During the first night in the suite an inspection hatch in the ceiling opened suddenly, very noisily, leaving our hearts pounding loudly in shock. We reported this to reception in the morning and we were informed that they would deal with it immediately.
Some hours later we returned to the suite to find nothing had been done, the hatch was still hanging down from the bedroom ceiling. Luckily the maid came in to clean the room, we pointed this out to her and she immediately got on the phone and it was fixed within minutes.
The following day I went to Reception to claim our passports and was again asked for an accommodation voucher - there was a note attached to our passports to say that we still hadn't provided them with this document. I'd had enough by then and phoned our concierge and asked her to sort it out with the hotel - which she did.
That evening we asked Reception to order a taxi for us. The receptionist said she would do it immediately. We waited outside for half an hour and my husband went back in to ask what the delay was. Surprise surprise a taxi had not been ordered for us. We walked!!!
Numerous times during the week we visited Reception - we had to get beach towels daily - on production of proof we were entitled to towels - and each time we were ignored because the reception staff were on the phone but as soon as any Spanish guests appeared they were attended to immediately before us!
I should point out that our Sovereign concierge was brilliant during the holiday helping us with information about the island - there was no way we would have asked Reception anything now.
The day before we left we asked our concierge if there was any way we could get a cold breakfast and maybe a cup of coffee before we left the hotel at 7 a.m. (not an unreasonable time) because the restaurant only opened at 7.30. We had booked seven days bed and breakfast after all and it was going to be a long day travelling. She said she would sort it out with Reception. We wished her luck!
She left a note in our room to say it was sorted and we could have a cold breakfast in the Restaurant at 6.30. Brilliant. We went down to the restaurant and of course there was no one there but they had left one light on. Maybe it was going to work. The cereals were there - but no milk. There was a plate of biscuits but no sign of coffee.
Never mind there was a juice dispensing machine - that was empty! No surprises there then.
O.K. enough about the hotel. Obviously don't go there unless you want to be treated like something nasty on their shoes.
The city of Ciutadella is wonderful. It is a brilliant place to see - walk round - shop etc. The harbour area is very picturesque and a super place to eat. We found a great restaurant Es Forat which served very good food. It was quite pricey but obviously a lovely place to eat and watch the world go by. You could choose less expensive items from the menu though and the service was still the same - excellent.
We hired bicycles from Velos Joan in Ciutadella itself at a cost of 18 Euros for two bicycles for a day. They were great and we really enjoyed our day cycling to Punta Nati (a lighthouse in the north of the Island) and to beach resorts quite close to the city. The one way system in the city itself is quite a nightmare though so we would advice walking with the bikes until you are clear of the city centre.
We also went to the trotting races close to Cala N Forcat which is held every Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Great fun. Even managed to win!! It was 5 Euros each with concessions for pensioners and children. Good value for all the family.
Hope this review proves helpful. Enjoy Menorca - it's a beautiful island - plenty to see - beautiful beaches and most of all lovely weather. If you want to stay close to the city which I recommend you do then choose another hotel and I'm sure you will enjoy your holiday."

Good touring base
"New Hotel, shiny around the edges but lacking the ambience of traditional holiday hotel.( Looks like its gunning for the business/conference/wedding trade )
Location good for those who don't rely solely on wheelchairs/taxis/mopeds (although the last 2 do abound in the vicinity) and dont mind walking to Ciutadella centre in about 15 mins.
Pool is great though not ideal for the 18-30 punters as it's designed for the more young at heart. Saying that we enjoyed a good time poolside and I'm a positively athletic(I wish!!) 40+.
Bedrooms good and Bathrooms great with fantastic maid service , (they dealt with my 16 year old and his best mate) without complaint (slip them 10 euros at the start of the week)!!
Bar food good, and there are plenty of Restaurants and Bars in the vicinity.
One good one we tried, used by the locals was Hostal Sa Prensa
on the way to town via the Passeig Ciutadella .Hasta Luego!!"

A little too clinical
"The 4 star Port Ciutadella was opened at the beginning of 2006. It is in the SetH group and was obviously designed by a man! The rooms are set round the outdoor pool which is in the middle of the property and there are only 2 floors. We were upgraded to a suite (room no. 245) which overlooked the hotel entrance and the promenade of the inlet. The only difference to other hotel suites that we have experienced was that there was a large dressing room with a very large mirror. There was only one decent mirror for make up which was in the bathroom. The vanity unit in the bathroom had 2 washbasins but very little room for toilet bags or make up bag. There is a desk with mini bar under in one corner but no lighting or mirror. We had the usual problem we have come across in Spanish hotels before - scraping furniture on tiled floors at all times of day and night. Breakfast was very good with everything being refreshed regularly. Cooked, cold meat and cheese, fruits, juices, breads and sweet bread and cakes. We never ate in the restaurant in the evening because the lighting and atmosphere were just too much like breakfast time. Equally the lighting in the bar and lounge areas was very clinical and did not encourage guests to stay long especially if the television sound was turned up. The temperature fluctuated in the shower which should not have happened in a new hotel. There is a good indoor pool and selection of treatments on offer as well as a gym. The Port Ciutadella is in a good position for the old town with a lovely walk along the promenade where you will find a good selection of restaurants. (Fewer on Mondays). A good base to visit Menorca but only if you get a good deal."

Quiet and Comfortable
"My wife and I stayed at the Port Ciutadella Hotel for a week in early Oct 2007. We stayed on a B&B basis and had a room on the first floor with a view across the promenade and the narrow sea inlet in front of the hotel.
Being new the hotel is still in pristine condition, the decor is simple rather than ornate and gives off a minimalistic feeling.Furnishings and fittings are high standard and overall level of comfort is excellent. The building is rectangular consisting of two floors only which enclose a pleasant pool area fully decked all round and in addition has a sun deck at first floor level at two ends. This is an excellent facility and was generally very quiet and peacefull during our stay - bar and snack service is available. There is also an excellent spa facility with small indoor pool - free to residents plus additional treatments at a cost.
Our room was superb with a luxury bathroom, two wash hand basins, spa bath etc, a walk in area to the wardrobe which served as a dressing room, a huge bed, a setee and chair, desk and chair, flat screen TV with BBC channels as well as Satellite and a balcony. I would recommed asking for an upstairs room as the ground floor rooms are right on the street and on two side have street views. The seaview will cost a bit more but whilst the sea view is not exactly stunning it is so much betterr than looking across a street. New building was going on around but we had no disturbance.
The breakfast buffet was stunning with a vast array of all kinds of food to suit whatever breakfast type you wanted. Like all buffets the hot breakfast foods could suffer a bit from cooling down but generally they were excellent.
We ate out 5 nights and there are plenty good restaurants in town and ate in 2 nights. The hotel evening buffet was plentiful with lots of variety but like most buffets lacking in real taste - at 14 Euros per head though it was great value and fine for a couple of nights when we were tired.
The staff tended more to the helpfull and efficient rather than exceptionally friendly but that was fine - give me effciency before a smile any day - if you get both it's a bonus !
Overall an excellent htel with good failities and service - quiet area witha charming old town. Great for a relaxing holiday - we would use this hotel again"
