Really lovely stay
"I read the previous reviews with some trepidation as we had booked a long weekend at short notice before checking, and to be honest i am glad i didn't check first. I don't know what somepeople want from a holiday hotel but i found it to be perfect (well very nearly).
I stay in 5 star hotels all over the world for business and pleasure and have to say this is one of those 'holiday' 5 star hotels which does not dissapoint like so many others do.
The room was modern and boutique in design, it had a very comfy bed and a turn down service, ambient lighting (red, mauve etc)I agree the lighting can be confusing but fun never the less.
Good sea view balcony as are all the rooms, better views from 5th floor and higher due to tall pine trees.
The bathroom was modern, clean and well stocked. The beach beds were good, not 3 inch thick matresses but absolutely a mile away from plastic rubbish, towels and cushions are available from the pool captain.
On the 1st day some Spanish kids came along and stole some items from peoples beach beds but were caught by three police very quickly.
Breakfast is good, usual large buffet and egg cooking, but good ingredients ie:fresh orange juice not concentrate.
lunch is good, choice of buffet cold/hot but pricy.
Evening meal we only ate once, it was perfectly ok but i guess the chef tries to present michelin star dishes but doesn't quite get there, it looks right but the ingredients aren't quit fresh enough or cooked as perfect as could be, but a good effort and would certainly pass for an average to good restaurant but not the best.
On the whole it is an old hotel which has benefited from quite a bit of updating, there are some slight problems but nothing to ruin a stay. It is very relaxing and has a superb setting feeling like an oasis between Palm and Palma Nova. So you can chill during the day and rave at night if you jump in a taxi (12 euro.)
They said the hotel was full but you would have thought it was only quarter full during the day as everyone is spaced out in the garden, under the trees, around the pool, on the sea front deck or on the private little beach in the hotels own miniture bay.
Would i go back? Yes i would, for a weekend or even a 2 week holiday. My last few holidays for comparision have been Mauritious, Barbados, Egypt, Mexico, Rhodes all 5 star hotels but this one holds it's own."

Beautiful Ocean Views
"After reading the past two reviews I was a little worried about our stay but I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel doesn't look like much driving up to it but once you are shown to your room all reservations disappear.
The communal areas have not been updated but they will be refurbished by 2008. Meanwhile the rooms are beautiful and all have gorgeous balconies with sun lounges. We were travelling with our 3 month old baby and the maids were excellent. They would give us extra towels without having to ask for them.
The pool area is nice and the beach is small and rocky but if you rent a car there are nice beaches to drive to. The breakfast was excellent and was served on a beautiful terrace overlooking the ocean. The location is great and you are a short drive to Porto Portals which has very nice restaurants.
I would highly recommend this hotel. It might not be as 5 star as the Maricel or La Recidencia but then again you are not paying 600 euros a night."

Lovely location, Modern rooms but things constantly break down
"The hotel is in a lovely suburban location about 5 km's (or 3 miles) from downtown Palma. The private beach at the hotel is just some rocks with rough seas but there is a nice beach, 5 min. walk away.
The hotel exterior looks worn out and needs help and maintenance. The rooms are nicely done up in a very modern and contemporary style and especially the lights. You require at least a day to figure out how to operate the lights.
Pro's: All rooms have fantastic ocean views. There is safe and free parking. The pool area is very nice. And finally the breakfast buffet is great.
Con's: Lights, AC etc are constantly breaking down. We had to move from 1 room at night because the lights kept on going off and the receptionist thought there may be a safety problem with water leakage. The room we got had an AC which did not work. The 3rd time was a charm and everything worked. All the guests we talked to had similar problems.
Another problem is that it takes multiple attempts for simple service requests to be met such as towels for a child since the room had only 2 towels."

"Just returned from a four day break at the Melia de Mar in Illetas. Here are the headlines:
- Food is extremely poor. The breakfast is good but the evening meal is shockingly bad. Frozen food. No fresh ingredients. It really spoils the experience.
- Beach/poolside facilities - are no more than mediocre. There are deckchairs on a paved area - it is crowded and claustrophobic. There is no real beach.
- Rooms - The rooms are very tired. The plumbing is problematic.
Overall - very disappointing. I would not return."

"Just come back from 9 nights here. An excellent choice for a quiet and "be spoiled" holiday. The location is fantastic ie being on a sort of headland and right on the sea/rock front. Wonderful and ever changing views of Palma Bay and the boats. Always lots of sunbeds and always excellent service from the pool staff and hotel staff in general. Lovely room and very hi tech with sequence lighting and great facilities. Yes it is expensive to eat there and quite limited as well. Best go out if you want variety! There were a couple of niggles (we reported two faults with the room but these were never dealt with - dripping cistern and an ill fitting door) but this did not detract from the holiday. The area is very quiet (as is the hotel) but there are a few shops and bars around. Worth walking up the hill to the Rui hotel (equally as nice and much more going on). All in all a great choice for a quiet couples holiday."

a good surprise...
"The very first impression of the hotel was not the best as the front of the hotel is quite old and is very 70ties like. But then once you are inside, have discovered the rooms, the garden and the pool area, you will see that it was largely worth booking this hotel. Just in front of the sea, small private beach... 4 km outside from the palma center / 15 euros by taxi.
A good experience !!!"

5 star, but some services were lacking
"We have just come back from a 10 night stay at the Melia de Mar.
Superb hotel although it was a little warm - that may have been due to the fact that I arrived at the hotel with my Ugg boots on in May!
The reception staff could not have been more helpful, on the down side the hotel is very expensive to eat in, one lunch time I decided to have strawberries and cream which worked out at £12. Another down side is that it can be a bit on the noisy side in the mornings, the cleaning staff are 'very loud' and seem to love banging doors at 8am!
I would recommend that people take advantage of the very regular bus service into Palma. It's a great city and just 10 mins away on the bus. It's worthwhile taking the open-topped bus tour which you can get from the main shopping area, this is a hop-on hop-off service and a great way to get your barings. You must also make your way down to the area just up from the marina, where there are two side streets brimming with tapas restaurants which suit every budget.
Another place I would recommend for a night out is Porta Portalis/Porta Nous, just about 5-10 min taxi ride from the hotel. This is very similar to Puerto Banus, although smaller and somewhat less flashy - in a good way!
All in all a great holiday if you are looking for 5 star accomodation and a sleepy location."

Lovely location and excellent rooms
"This is an excellent hotel just out of Palma (but close) with fantastic grounds and a private beach (small). The room are larger than most and all face the bay of Palma and are all the same size, large - with a separate bathroom and toilet. Plus they each have a room to store ALL your cases and bags! Try to get a room on an upper floor for the best views or lower if you want subtle shade from the trees. The interior of the hotel is very well designed and maintained, with very nice terraces and pool area and pool bar/restaurant.
The reception and room staff could not be better, very helpful and thorough. The only minor negative comment is that SOME of the restaurant staff seem to not but up to the high standard of the rest of the hotel. This does seem to be the case in some of the larger chain hotels on the island. But it is not too bad and you get used to who is good at their job and avoid them.
I love the hotel and its location and had such a great stay I will be staying again twice during 2007........ great for a rest and kick back."

Absolutely fantastic hotel
"This hotel is wonderful if you're looking for a great place to stay just outside of Palma (if you like, the bus into Palma is right outside the hotel). The room & views were amazing. The breakfast alone is worth the stay. Very friendly staff, good tennis, great food, excellent swimming...we couldn't have been happier!
There is a fantastic restaurant around the corner from the hotel, right on a little beach, which is a great way to spend an afternoon in the sun.
Melia de Mar is well worth a visit."
