Not quite five star but still lovely

Reviewed Tue 9th of October 2012

"We arrived back from the Melia Cala d'or yesterday. It is a lovely, safe hotel with very friendly staff. Everywhere is very clean!

We stayed in suite 421 with a whirlpool bath, separate bedroom and kitchen area. The balcony was huge and overlooked the pool. The sun hit the baclony around 4'o clock which was great to end the day with a glass of wine. The only negative part about the room was that the shower area was a little smelly due to a little standing water. However, this was not a major problem.

The gymn was good with four weight machines and some light free weights. It also has a rower, step machine, bike and treadmill although these are a few years old.

Breakfast was excllent with a fine range of fruits, meats, cereals and yoghurts. Fried breakfasts are made by one chef when requested and can be a bit of a wait especially if it is busy. However, the food when it does arrive is very good. The toaster did not work when we arived and it took abot ten minutes for the toast to brown. This was a minor pain!

UK papers are available every day in the lounge area which is a nice touch. Also, at 5 pm the hotel serves tea and coffee in the lounge free of charge. They also provide croissants which are lovely.

There is no need to eat in the hotel for dinner as there are some excellent restaurants in the town.

We recommend El Caliu - book a table, it gets busy with locals and people returning. Their kebabs and spicey potatoes are wonderful. Acquarius in the harbour is also very good. Presentation of food is second to none and very reasonably priced.
We do not recommend Regina, in the centre. The food served was terrible and frankly inedible! Also, Portofino, in the harbour, next door to Acquarius, should be avoided. See the cala d'or forum for more information.

Overall, it was a good holiday. My wife and I stayed for a week and that was long enough as there is not a great deal to do within Cala D'or. The hotel is not quite 5 star as it states officially, but it is still a lovely place to stay."

Brilliant Once Again!

Reviewed Fri 26th of October 2012

"This was our second holiday at the Melia, and the quality and service remained consistently high. We booked using the hotel website and booked flights, transfers independantly, saving hundreds of pounds from tour operators.

We had suite 321 and yes it is the best in the hotel, mainly due to the overly large sunny balcony, which is very private and on a hot July day you get a welcome breeze up there.

The staff are excellent, very welcoming and courteous, even acknowledging you by name. The pool and gardens were kept clean every day, my only negative point about the pool area is again the overhanging shrubs which can make it quite shady. That's ok if you prefer the shade but slightly frustrating if you like the sun.

We ate A La Carte a couple of times this time and were not disappointed, the quality of the food was excellent and the setting in the restaurant in the evening was quite romantic!

The turn down service could possibly be done a little later, their allocated time is between 7-8pm, this was slightly inconvenient if you were still getting ready to go out when they came, they weren't that keen on coming back at a later time.

We hired a car this time (from Autos Roig in Cala D'or, I used their web site) The company were excellent. We were able to travel a little further to some decent beaches. Cala Mondrago was beautifully clean with soft white sand, you have to park in a car park and it's then a 15 minute walk down to the bay. The first beach you come to gets quite busy as there are pedalos and boats to hire, if you prefer a quieter less crouded beach walk round the headland (there is a substantial path) and it is a fabulous beach with sunbeds and shades to hire. We had lunch at the one of the main beaches restaurants and it was better than some of the more expensive restaurants we had in the evening. Es Trenc beach was a little further, it was huge, but a little more popular, the waves are bigger so its not as safe to swim, but better for windsurfing or boarding.

We drove to the Western Water Park in Magalluf, takes about 1 hr, was ok for the children, but don't compare it to the disney water parks in Florida. We went up to Porto Cristo to the Caves of Drach, was worth a visit, although young children could be bored and frightened when they turn the lights out! We also went to a safari park near Cala Millor, I wouldn't recommend going, the animals looked pretty dismal and the small zoo on the exit of the park was awful, don't pay money to keep this place going, I was annoyed that we had.

We chartered the Vita Bel from the harbour again, and had another brilliant day sailing with Nigel the skipper. We had a bbq for lunch with chicken, steak and king prawns and it was cooked to perfection. We swam and snorkelled in a couple of bays and had a great time jumping off the side of the boat.

The only down side of the hotel is the lack of facilities or entertainment for young teenagers who are too young to go out on their own into Cala D'or in the evening, I think the bar/lounge area could be utilised better in the evening. All in all another great holiday at The Melia Cala D'or."

The best hotel in Cala D'or

Reviewed Thu 6th of December 2012

"Small and friendly 5* property.
Attentive. polite staff & great food.
Lots of spa treatments available and a well equiped gym.
Well furnished spacious rooms and public areas.
Ideal for couples & familys that wish to have a quiet layed back holiday.
Well positioned 5 mins from nightlife and a bit further to Cala Gran Beach.
Kids playground and pool, situated a bit away from main pool if you want the quiet.
Nice sized main pool, most sunbeds are in the shade, opt for the top of the pool if you want all day sun. If this area is full you can place your sunbeds in the garden areas which over look the main pool.
No entertainment, but this is a bonus in my opinion, the centre is near enough if that's what you require.
Sat tv in rooms, includes ITV1 and BBC1.
All round Luxury hotel 5* hotel without being pretentious.
I'm a travel agent and I would reccomend this hotel to the right type of customer with confidence."

Fantastic Melia Cala D'or

Reviewed Mon 29th of October 2012

"Me and my fiancee stayed at the Melia Cala D'or 11th-22nd July 06. This hotel has recently been upgraded to 5-star category, it really does deserve it. We stayed in Suite 321, this really is the best room in the hotel, it has a huge terrace that enjoys the sun shining on it all day, you can sunbathe in private on your terrace all day if you wish, the terrace is not overlooked by any other rooms. The Terrace is equipped with a large table with 4 chairs, it also has 2 very comfortable padded sunchairs with foot stools. The room itself is also large, it consists of a lounge with 3-seater sofa, a Kitchenette with Hob, Microwave, Fridge/Freezer/Minibar, complimentary tea, coffee and milk sachets are also provided, there is TV in the lounge area. The TV provides over 40 channels with high quality reception, programmes from the UK include BBC1, BBC World, ITV1, Skysports1, National Geographic Channel, Fox News, CNN, Eurosports, The bedroom has a King Size Bed and another TV with all channels. The Bathroom has twin sink basins, a jacquzzi bath, every bathroom accessory you could need is provided, including top quality bath gels, shampoo conditioners, dental packs, shaving packs, aftershave balms, body lotions etc etc. Each night the maid arrives and turns down the bed and places on it a written weather report for the next day and this is accompanied by a Quality Chocolate, really nice touches! The hotel restaurant offers a fantastic choice for Breakfast, eggs are made for you on request, you can choose boiled, fried, poached, scrambled, or omlettes, bacon is also cooked on request for you, all juices and cava is offered. For Dinner the Restaurant offers an Al a Carte Menu or Table D'Hote. At lunchtime a full menu is available at the poolside. The pool is fantasitc, at one end it has a separate childrens section, at the other end their is a huge jacquzzi area that can sit about 12 persons, for children there is also an entirely separate paddling pool and playground. One piece of advice when using the swimming pool is to choose a bed on the left hand side, that side gets the sun most of the day, the beds also have a canopy over them which you can open and close as you wish, great if you are getting a little to over heated. Every afternoon in the lounge complimentary tea and coffee is served. Are there any downsides to this hotel?? a few minor irritations would include that the Restaurant Al A Carte Menu never changed in 11 days, the Wardrobe in the room has very limited hanging space, and the poolside beds get reserved with towels very early in the morning, these points are very minor indeed and definitely will not spoil your stay. The hotel has zero entertainment, so only come here if you wish to relax, the pedestrianised restaurant and bar area of Cala D'or is about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel so if you want to be entertained you have not got far to walk. If you have any problems with your room the hotel promises to correct it within 15 minutes, if it is not resolved in that time you are refunded the cost of that nights stay, how good is that!!(needless to say that we never had any problems), all the staff are fantastically friendly and courteous, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Make your reservation at this fabulous hotel now and look forward to a great relaxing holiday! If you can get room 321 it really is the best, otherwise 312 would be our 2nd choice room, however, all suite rooms are really excellent. We will definitely be staying here again in Summer 07."

Worth its 5 stars

Reviewed Wed 26th of December 2012

"A little late in posting this review I'm afraid but just had to advise that I had a lovely time staying in this hotel.
We found this hotel after trawling thru the brochures but it worked out cheaper to book on line with Sol Melia. We took the half board option.
We had a lovely room - it was actually a suite, very clean with added extras such as dressing gowns!
The hotel is very quiet, ideal if you want a relaxing break not ideal if you want nightly entertainment.
The food was very nice, with the majority of all evening meals being excellent. You have a set menu (2/3 choices for starter, main and dessert) if there is nothing you like, you are welcome to select from the main menu (the restaurant is open to non-residents).
You can have free tea and coffee served in the lounge in the afternoon (we only found this out on the last day) so ideal if you want a break from the sun and a cuppa!
When we were there in May the outside pool was still cold so we made use of the indoor pool and jacuzzi.
The staff are all very helpful. The manager of the restaurant (Jose, I think) couldn't do enough for you and he, like the rest of the staff were very attentive.
The town of Cala'dor is quite big but mostly made up of the usual mix of shops and "english" restaurants.
We used the tourist train to visit the marina and the other half of Cala d'or which is quite far out from the main town centre (and interestingly where the big Thomson hotel is situated).
Overall we had a lovely time and would recommended the hotel."

Best Hotel In Cala D or Or

Reviewed Wed 26th of December 2012

"I am a Travel Agent and I have stayed in many hotels around the world so it did have alot to live up to so I did my investiagtions wisely.

I booked the hotel as I was looking for a family friendly small hotel and the Melia fitted the bill superbly. Rooms are wonderful although I do recommend the Junior Suites if travelling with small children as it had a microwave, fridge and even a 2 ring hob to do some cooking (if need) so suited us fine as we have a one year old so ideal for bottle warming etc..

Breakfast are FAB, we only went on B&B as so many restaurants in the area again all geard up for families. Staff are superb and seem to be very fond of smaller children which was great as never felt bad that my little boy would throw his toys on the floor or would be covered in yoghurt at the breakfast table!!

Pool a little cold but put that down to going in June, im sure it would get better in July/Aug.

Dont go here if looking for lively action around the pool or kids clubs because thats just what the hotel Is NOT about, book this if want a small and friendly property, even older adults seem to enjoy it, as long as you dont mind small children pottering about the baby pool with their buckets and spades its a great choice."

There was a lot of families staying with small children, but all were very well behaved.

Would recommend it."

An exceptional 4star boutique hotel that more than lives up to standard

Reviewed Thu 6th of December 2012

"My wife and I treated ourselves to a little luxury for a week long stay in this hotel on the basis of the trip advisor reviews and it certainly lived up to expectation. Although a bit expensive compared to 'normal' Spanish hotels you get excellent value for money.
Service was exceptional and genuine, the suite was very large with a big balcony and breakfast was fresh with a lot of choice.
The hotel is a very short walk to the centre of the town or beaches. The town itself is small with plenty of restaurants (although we didn't manage to find a decent spanish restaurant serving tapas). The resort is ideal for a quiet break without the normal 'gangs' of drunk tourists crawling round the bars.
A couple of additional features in the suites not mentioned in previous reviews include;
-They have a 'kitchenette' with fridge, sink, microwave, crockery and cutlery. We used this to have a light lunch
-They also have a DVD player and you can borrow a selection of DVDs from the hotel
-You get the usual luxuries like beach towels, dressing gowns etc
On the whole we were very impressed with the hotel and would thoroughly recommend it. The Melia Cala D'Or sets the standard for a 4 star hotel and we would certainly be visiting again."

Wonderful Holiday

Reviewed Thu 25th of October 2012

"My wife and I visted the hotel in June 2005 and like everyone else we were greeted by the most friendly and curteous staff who took the time to show us around the hotel.
The food was excellent and the Breakfast all you could want, we had a hire car and toured round the island but came back to Cala D'or to eat most nights where there are many good restaurants. All you have to do is ask the staff in the hotel to recommend where to eat.
Our suite was large and clean on the ground floor next to the Pool. We joined the MAS club and have booked to go back again this year in September.
We thoroughly recommend this hotel"

Superb Hotel

Reviewed Sat 27th of October 2012

"A fabulous hotel, we had a suite on the ground floor and the lovely thing about the hotel is that it is small and the staff are very courteous and helpful.
Breakfast is out of this world, every kind of fruit, yogurts, different breads, cakes/donuts, a chef cooks eggs to order poached/fried/scrambled/boiled and also the toast and bacon, there is other hot food, an unbelievable spread of cold meats/smoked salmon/cheeses and a must is the freshly squeezed orange juice which if you want to you can make into a Bucks Fizz with the Cava supplied.
We went on 30th April for a week, unfortunately the outdoor pool was too cold for us so we did swim in the heated indoor one.
Our suite was great, lovely bathroom with jacuzzi bath, a kitchenette area with electronic shutter, tv in bedroom and living area, lots of storage. The lights and airconditioning etc are operated from a small computer screen.
The curtains have absolutely black out linings and some days we didnt wake til 10.00 !!!
Excellent safe, dressing gown and slippers
If I was to criticise it at all I would say that although a kettle and crockery etc there is no coffee or tea in the room (we bought our own) and also there wasnt an abundance of coat hangers but these two things are just me being very picky really you cannot fault the staff or hotel.
There are loads of restaurants close by and in the marina - we really like The Slivinia in the pedestrian part of the town at the crossroads with two steak houses."

Stayed in this hotel for the 1st time in...

Reviewed Fri 27th of January 2006

"Stayed in this hotel for the 1st time in May, what a lovely surprise, room beautiful cleanliness 1st class, close to lots of bars and shops but on a quiet road so the best of both worlds!!

Not too big so it felt special. will definitely return. Not much entertainment in the evening but this wasn't a problem as close to plenty of attractions. This hotel tends to attract couples and families with small children.

In the room was a cleverly hidden little kitchen well stocked with all the necessary facilities - 2 ring hob , fridge and microwave so you could prepare your own meals if required (restaurant beautiful though!!).

Pool area lovely and also small child’s pool and playground. for such a small hotel this one has it all!!!"
