"We have just returned from a fantastic week at this hotel. The staff were absolutely fantastic and a credit to the hotel chain. From arrival to leaving for home nothing was too much trouble. They spoke fantastic english on reception and went out of their way to help.
The food was fantastic and the gala breakfast with champagne was a highlihgt folllowed by the gala dinner with show cooking. The waiters again and the chef team were fabulous.
I would reccommend this hotel would be perfect for couples and families. There are two pools at this hotel and the beach is just over the road. You can also go to the pools at the azul complex next door. There is a train/ bus that goes to the centre every 15 mins to the hour. If you want to do this for fun its great but is cheaper to get a taxi if there is four of you.
We discovered a short cut to the town at the side of the hotel. If you go up the drive on the left you see some steps at the side of the tennis courts. Follow the car park and turn right. You follow the road all the way down and end up near mallorcalandia. This is by far the quickest way and was a welcome releif as its a long walk via cala azul or through the residential area."

Cala Esmeralda Hotel

"We have just returned from a weeks stay in the Cala Esmeralda Hotel in Cala D’or. The hotel is superbly located overlooking a small cove and beach and offers great views for those that have a room to the front of the hotel.

The food was plentiful and delicious with a wide variety of food offered on a self-service basis. No matter what time you ate, during the restaurant opening times, the food was always freshly made with all the options available, so there was no need to rush down to eat.

The room sizes are adequate for a couple all with a small balcony and kept spotlessly clean on a daily basis. The rooms have a small fridge and air-conditioning, but no coffee or tea making facilities, still the fridge kept the wine cool for an evening tipple before dinner.

The hotel is in a quiet location and we weren’t disturbed once during the night by rowdy revellers. The centre of Cala D’or is only a fifteen minute stroll away and offers a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. The hotel pools are clean with plenty of sunbeds which can’t be reserved and you have to use the hotels beach towels which are obtained from reception for a returnable deposit.

All in all a hotel that prides itself in cleanliness and friendly staff and I would recommend it to anyone, we will definitely return.

"the location of the hotel is fantastic overlooking cala esmeralda beach and just 5 minutes walk away from the busy cala dor but still a quiet area in the night. the beach is shared by a number of hotels so it does get very busy, even slightly off season. the rooms were quite basic but neat and tidy and the maid servise was fantastic. the beds were made every day and our clothes were even folded and put away. the pools are very clean. one pool overlooking the beach is lovely with a bar serving dood and drinks. it does get busy there and you will struggle to find a sunbed at times. the food quality was very good however, there was a feeling of rush and panic with the waiters who as soon as you had taken your last mouthful, would whip the plate away from you. one time my girlfriend and i went up to get desert from the buffet and they cleared our table and drinks before we had finished. in my mind the waiters were very efficient but ill mannered. the hotel entertainment was shocking. not worth staying in the hotel for drinks at night. there is better entertainment in the cala dor town. but be carefull of prices there. we payed 8 erous for a lager once. great entertainment at tropical gardens with cheap drinks. overall quite good. "Never go back there again!
For a 4 star Hotel I was disappointed.
We have had better from other Hotels in the area.
Some of the food every day was stale so started to eat out instead.
The rooms are very clean and you do get a nice view.
But the balconies are very small for this 4 star and so are the rooms.
Dont get me wrong clean Hotel nice reception and pool area but with regular stale food and a small room we know you can get better.
we've had better in Cal Dor many times"

"We went to Gran Canaria again as it's hot/warm all year round. We stayed at the Cala D'or apartments, which we were plesantly surprised with. We thought it would have been more basic than it was. We arrived with a nice welcome at reception, then went down to our room which in itself had everything that you need as there is a fridge (clean) and hotplate for cooking (clean). There aren't any t.v's in the room but you don't miss it, it was nice not to watch it and after all your on holiday! Plenty of sunbeds even if you go out at 9.30am and alot are already towelled up ready for a day of sunbathing. The pool is nice for a dip or a bit of fun, after you get past the initial Brrrr its cold. Variety in the onsite shop good enough but not the cheapest place to buy from! The bar tenders are friendly enough and smile and seem to enjoy their job. Evening entertainment is dependant on if theres enough people to watch the shows as alot of families go down to the town for the evening meal. We saw 2 shows cancelled, but we didn't mind. Cathy the evening entertainment was nice enough, always getting the men and the odd girl to play killer pool by day, and singing by night (karaoke is a big favorite). To get the best prices you need to go into the town even if it means you get a taxi or walk back to the hotel up 100+ steps (we only got a taxi once), water and basic essentials are deffinetly cheaper downstairs. Room quality sheets changed every other day, cockroaches, what cockroaches didn't see any in the room. Possibly a few things could be updated in the rooms but it wouldn't stop me from going back. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would reccomend anyone to go there."

"Cala Esmeralda was a wonderful hotel and we would definitely return in an instant.

Make sure you ask for a sea view as some rooms have views overlooking the restaurant roof.

Our room over looked the beach and we had a wonderful view of the sea.

The hotel is cleaned to an exceptionally high standard and pool area and gardens are well maintained. You are not allowed to reserve sunbeds and the pool areas do not open until around 8am which is great for people like myself who do not want to be up at the crack of dawn! Pool towels are available at a deposit.

Food is again of high standards and there is plenty of choice for everyone, my daughter has lots of allergies and it was really helpful having all the ingredients labelled in English and Spanish. Food was getting constantly replenished and never ran out.

Staff were lovely and very helpful.

The sister hotel, Esmeralda park was next door and definitely for families who like a lively hotel with evening entertainment.

The beach was lovely but very crowded, great for snorkelling and jumping off the rocks was great fun.

The only disappointment was the standard of the Bedroom. It was very small and basic with no carpets and little space, but still very clean."

Cala Esmerelda -

"Let me start by saying that my wife and I had a fantastic time at the Cala Esmerelda. The hotel has an unenviable position, looking over the cove, the rooms were basic, but more than sufficient. In our rooms we had no issues with noise from the air conditioning and the small fridge in the room was an added bonus. All staff at all times were pleasant, helpful, friendly and importantly interested in you. The rooms were cleaned every day and the whole hotel was spotless. The food choice and quality is worthy of a five star hotel, with some of the most efficient waiting staff I have ever seen.

In the rooms the beds are definitely in need of either replacement or some form of top mattress as I have slept on better park benches, joke. Seriously though the beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on. As we had to move rooms during our stay I can vouch that they are the same in all the rooms. The hotel towels were threadbare and in need of replacement. If you are over size 8 or weigh more than 10 stone then you may have been able to dry your top half with the bath towel and let nature dry the rest.

The hotel pool did have restrictions on when it opened and closed and as usual sun bed reservations were caused by the ‘British’ clientele rather than any Germans, though there were always some available.

Points that the hotel could improve on are the ‘rock pool’ which is situated across the road from the main hotel. This is the secondary pool which is attached to the hotel’s snack bar and is supposed to be for hotel guests only! In all my times visiting the pool, I never actually ever managed to get a sun bed. I once counted ten people sitting on the steps outside waiting for it to open at 9am. I could barely recognise many actual hotel guests at the pool. The hotel management could do with enforcing the rules more stringently.

Evening entertainment was woeful. On one occasion the singer did not even know the words of some of the songs and mumbled through. Stop I hear you say no one made you stay you could have gone out, fair point. What I am trying to highlight is the fact that if the hotel spend a little more money on the entertainment more people would stay and therefore the hotel could generate more money from the bar. On the night when the singer did not know the words, the outside and inside bar area was busy and at least half the people left before he finished his third song, he was that bad."

"Echo what everyone else says, basic accommodation, but other than that great hotel. Full marks for the meals, excellent choices and cooked beautifully and freshly infront of you for some of the main meat and fish courses. Only downside was having to get up so early to get a sunbed, by 8.30 they were all taken. Evening entertainment still the same as it was in the 70's, really needs updating or banging on the head as made us go out rather than stay in."

A lovely holiday in Mallorca

"Returned recently from a 7 night holiday at the Cala Esmeralda Hotel. It is situated on the fringe of a quiet residential area with splendid views over the cove. All in all we had a wonderful time. The hotel was spotless, the rooms comfortable (air con. a little noisy, but the fridge handy!), the food superb, and the pool areas (there are two) very relaxing. Prevoius reviewers have referred to the Hotel Manager and his continual "walkabouts". I can confirm that he still patrols the premises and takes an active interest in the well-being of his guests. The restaurant staff were also very attentive to our needs. The evening entertainment was a little disappointing but this did not affect our holiday. Other reviewers have also commented about the large presence of German guests. This for me makes the hotel better since they are well-behaved, quiet and less intrusive than many other tourists. We do intend to return next year to the Cala Esmeralda Hotel, though next time our stay will be for a longer period since 7 nights was simply not enough. If you decide to book this hotel you will not be disappointed."

"Just back from a 2 week stay in Cala Esmeralda hotel Cala dor. We had a brilliant time. Staff were very friendly, clean but rather basic rooms. Only downside was there was very strong german influence!! The entertainment was poor unless you enjoyed a man on a keyboard every night. Cala dor is a 5 minute walk with plenty of entertainment, pubs and clubs and esmeralda park offers a great choice of entertainment for younger childern. Would recommend Holywood bar which was 5 minutes walk from the hotel and Tropical garden. Did struggle slightly near the end of the holiday to get sunbeds as the same people would reserve every morning regardless what the signs at the pool said- NO RESERVING. Food at the hotel was EXCELLENT!!! Great variety i think we must have come home 2 stone heavier!! Would definatley reccomend!"
