Hotel Fab and Reception Staff Outstanding
"Booked this hotel via Expedia and had a wonderful stay and hope to return in the future. Hotel is beautiful, spotlessly clean and with attention to detail. Building works are ongoing but we did not find this intrusive. We understand they are building a new much larger spa. Food: Breakfast was very good but not outstanding - it was a shame they did not take advantage of the wonderful variety of fruit, which was available to sample in the local market. We only ate twice in the garden restaurant in the evening, the salads were delicious but unfortunately the food on the hot plate was just not quite hot enough. We ate once at lunchtime in the Ocean restaurant and the food was of a really high quality. There are plenty of good quality restaurants nearby and down on the Lido. Initial room allocated was good but view was limited but the receptionist was happy to move us to another room on the 6th floor. It was odd that the initial room had Sky News but the second room didn't! English newspapers were available free of charge. Tea and coffee making facilities are now available. All the staff were friendly and helpful but in particular the receptionists went out of their way to assist us when we had problems with our hire car and the car rental firm were not willing to assist. There were two main outside pools, plus children's pools, with plenty of comfortable sunloungers and towels provided."

Very stylish but totally soulless...
"First impressions weren't great - our hotel room wasn't ready when we got there and the reception staff didn't seem to care that they just dumped us in the lobby (it was also raining, but hey that's not their fault!). The hotel is beautiful looking, but it was also a building site. There is EXTENSIVE work going on at the front and the side of the hotel - I would estimate that this won't be finished until probably early next year, they were still on the foundations while we were there (16-23rd June). The room was superb and all the rooms overlook the sea so fortunately we couldn't hear the noise while we were inside. It became an issue when you were "relaxing" by the pool. Apart from on the Sunday they were working non stop all day - literally from 8am until 8pm (sometimes later). The hotel is very sleek and stylish - almost too minamilistic for my liking (although my husband loved that). It was always empty and really had no atmosphere at all. We only ate for dinner at the hotel once and it was very good, but eating in a totally unatmospheric room didn't really get us in the holiday mood so we ate out at all other times. The pools were marvellous, both inside and out (except of course for the noise of the building works). We also played squash on the rainy day and we could borrow rackets and balls that was good fun! Finally, the hotel was a fair way to walk from Funchal itself, I reckon at least 20-30 minutes and it's a pretty steep hill getting back. Unlike other hotels I noticed in the area it didn't have a free bus and they would definitely benefit from that. Because of the distance we didn't really eat in Funchal most nights but dined around the hotel. The Paradiso Cafe next door was brilliant and very reasonable."

A Good Hotel
"we have just returned from this hotel and the building work at the front was not too intrusive but you did hear it after 8am which was ok as we are early risers! we gather it is to expand the estrada monumental though we were not told this. Can we say how well the hotel looked and what a good holiday we had. The location makes it. Easy walk down into Funchal and sightly uphill on the way back(we are fit and able though!) There were some minor teething troubles which we would like to point out so that they can make the hotel even better: . .the food in the buffet resturant was mainly imaginative but was often deplete at or after 8pm (when we ate)which meant that there was sometimes a poor choice and often cold. There was a man with a striped tie who looked liked management but he was not at all effective. This is obviously not a place like Spain for late dining! Wine prices for bottles were over the top as was reflected by not many people opting for them! Opt for the wine by the glass! this is not a real criticism as we felt the food was good and it was early days in the hotels reopening. .the staff on our last night had lost the impetus of the previous week and were more concerned with reserved guests. .the sweet course and first course were less good than the main in the buffet restaurant. . the main course was generally good. Overall the half board option was very good value. on the plus side the ocean restaurant served fantastic food of high quality and the manager on our first day (2/04/07) is to be highly commended. And we ate there again twice! Super! the pool staff were great and really attentive. The pools were twin to match the twin towers of the hotel and the views were superb over the bay and towards porto santo. Plenty of towels just the job to stop people complaining!lots of loungers too and the attentive pool staff will put more out. Good indoor swimming pool NO tarrif for the spa treatments in the rooms. So by the time i THOUGHT ABOUT IT IT WAS TOO LATE!Also shut on EASTER Sunday! the rooms were well cleaned with good detail.Bathrobes and good toiletries although no coffeeor tea in the room .Why? They had a turn down service but I HAVE TO SAY this became earlier which meant that we could not use it as 7:30is ok but not 6:25!they did try though but not wholeheartedly. The obriens bar we did not know about and later discovered we had a 20 euro credit to eat there. How do you give this information to half board guests?Reception shoud do so on arrival. Also half board guests can eat at Ocean resturant for a 20 euro credit only at lunch time.again how do half board guests now about this? the indoor swimming pool has a floor that is so slippy they will have an injury soon!dDo not walk in anything other than bare feet. the reception staff were excellent but in just reopening may need to give half board clients more information about their options in terms of eating and direct guests more.THIS is a 4 star which is close to a 5 star but needs less minimalism and more direct input. it is a place I WOULD COME BACK TO AND RECOMMEND Are they spoiling MADEIRA with some of the developments? The Pestana chain of hotels seem to be very intrusive. Overall CS MADEIRA ATLANTIC RESORT AND SPA SUPERB! Stay at this hotel Super break Good FACILITIES FANTASTIC LOCATION Maybe get some of the little bits right and don't order the bottles of wine! Far too over the top expensive. Cocktail bar fairly basic and lack of real unederdstanding about cocktails(what no vodka cosmopolitan?!)Also somewhat expensive."

Wow, great vacation, great hotel
"Wow! What can I say, this is a superb hotel and the customer service is first class. Staff is very friendly and helpful, rooms clean, views magnificent (we got a room on the top floor :-). Meals in the hotel restaurant were very good too. First week we had halfboard, then we swiched to B&B option and it was a good decision, since there is excellent reastaurants in the city center.I recommend the best of the east tour and levada walks. I can strongly recommend this hotel and will definetly be back again."

Goodbye Crowne Plaza!
"November 2006 was our second visit to the Crowne Plaza and just like the first it was great. We were on the 10th floor in a suite, which gave us wonderful views over the ocean and mountains. The Crowne Plaza was perfect for those who prefer modern, minimal styling and peace and quiet. I say was ,as it now belongs to another Hotel group and is currently undergoing refurbishment ,apparently it is due to re-open in early April and will be known as CS Atlantic Resort. I look forward with interest to see if the new Hotel can offer the same standard of service etc., and I am sure it won't be long before the Trip Advisors are posting their reviews."

Wonderful stay in Madeira
"We were in Madeira for the Canadian Victoria day long weekend. In this short stay, we toured around Madeira and we love this little island. This hotel contributed to our good memories of this trip. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The concierge was helpful. They found us a very nice restaurant in the close proximity of the hotel. It was so delicious and cheap!!! We didn't use their pools or beach because we're not interested in swimming. But we really enjoyed the nice scenery of the beaches."

"this is our sixth visit to this hotel sometimes in June sometimes in September or October but each visit just gets better. This year we had a suite although the rooms are every bit as good. We are always on a high floor and the views from the balcony are so nice, to the right I can see sea, coastline and town to the left I can see funchal old town and sea. It is one of my most favourite views of the many places we have travelled to. Our swimming pools down at sea level are lovely to swim in although cold and you can easily have a swim in the sea if you wish. Extremely peaceful and never ever crowded because there is loads of space. My husband and I always find Madeira such a beautiful and restful place just to relax and soak up the sun at a nice temperature, walk into a bustling town or round the cliff walkway to the new shopping centre up the hill. Hotel spotless breakfast on the patio is great excellent choice. I can find no wrong , with breathtaking views the minute you enter the hotel , pleasant staff, we will be back although hotel name is changing next year, but staff have assured us everything will remain the same."

"We were two families in early 30âs and we stayed in Crown Plaza for one week at the end of June. We had a wonderful time in Madeira and I would recommend this resort to everybody who wants to relax and enjoys excursions. We picked up Crown Plaza hotel following the reviews on tripadvisor. The location of the hotel is remarkable: it is situated on a cliff with a great view to the Atlantic Ocean. It has two big pools for adults and two small for children. The pools are located on a nice and clean platform, where you can reach by elevator; they are well maintained and the view of the ocean from the pool is nice. But, there are some drawbacks which I want to mention: they are filled with salty ocean water, they are not deep (maximum 1.4 meters) and they donât have any heating system. At the end of June we could stay maximum 10 minutes in the water pool. I understand that other hotels have pools with heated not-salty water. I didnât feel the minimalist style in the rooms: they are big, king-sized beds, equipped with all the necessary accessories. All the rooms have see-view; but the ones located on the first and second floor have half see-view half garden-view. The breakfast is good, not very diversified but all the products were of a good quality and in big quantity. We didnât have dinner in the hotel â itâs a pity to do this because there are many small restaurants close to the hotel or in the Marina area where you can eat sea-foods or fish prepared in many styles. We made many excursions along the island â but I was especially impressed by the Jardin tropical located in Monte area: I never seen before such a beautiful garden. Also we enjoyat a firework - lovely! Many of the comments and reviews on trip advisors were very helpful and I found Madeira and Crown Plaza exactly like in the reviews. But for one thing I was not prepared: weather. Honestly I didnât expect to such weather. Yes, it was constant 22 â 23 degree but it was cloudy almost all day. We could enjoy the pools and lay in the sun only in the morning until 12 oâclock; after that clouds came from the mountains. In Funchal it rained few drops in some afternoons, but when we did the west tour it was raining non stop in that part of the island. In case we will back someday in Madeira I will not hesitate to choose once more Crown Plaza."

A very relaxing holiday!
"We booked our holiday through Strawberry World after much deliberation after reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor! We need not have worried the hotel lived up to all our expectations and was excellent value for money. We were very lucky to be upgraded to one of the rooms on the 5th floor (with an enormous and very comfortable bed!) The room had a magnificent view of the ocean and was in a very quiet area of the hotel. The room was modern and spacious, the only very slight quibble we had was that we kept flooding the bathroom floor! Not entirely sure why but it wasn't a big problem. We were also really pleased that our room had a fridge in it that was empty allowing us to buy drinks (including skimmed milk for cups of tea in the room) from the local shop, although you could have it filled as a mini bar if you like. The breakfast was amazing. Plenty of choice for everyone! We also ate dinner in the hotel one evening, which was an Italian Buffet - very good, if a little pricey. We also had lunch by the pool several times and room service - both excellent! The pools were excellent. There are 2 enormous outdoor salt water infinity pools as well as 2 smaller paddling pools for children and there is a normal pool indoors(which does also go outside!). There was always plenty of sun loungers available by the pools and attendants willing to help set up your parasols. There is also access to the sea, although be warned it can be quite a tough swim! We would also highly recommend booking in for a treatment in the Thalasso Spa - we both had a hot stones back massage, absolutely amazing! Before our treatments we use the hydrotherapy pool - it was like a massive jacuzzi!! Very relaxing! We really couldn't have asked for more from our holiday, the location and the hotel were perfect for us. This was our first trip to Maderia and we will definitely be going back. We would also choose to stay at the Crowne Plaza again, as in comparison to the other hotels in the area to us it seemed by far the best."

Great quiet hotel with great sea views!
"We stayed for one week in the Crowne Plaza hotel in the Lido area of Funchal. It was our first time in Madeira and the experience was great. We chose this hotel following Trip Advisor's reviews, since we saw that all the complaints were different and all the nice things about the hotel were pretty the same in all reviews. The Crowne Plaza hotel filled all of our expectations. The hotel entrance shows a great view of the Atlantic ocean, so the first impression is very good. The people in reception were charming and answered all the questions we needed. Our room was big, 2 king-size beds, a sufficiently big & clean bathroom, and a sofa with TV. It was in the first floor, which is not the nicest, but for the price we paid (700Eur for 1 week), we felt it was better than expected. The rooms are very silent, we didn't hear anything during our stay. Next to our room was the gym (sufficient for what we needed), which is open 24 hours. Also the in-door swimming pool that has a part outside, so you can swim outside the hotel. We used all of the equipment, including the sauna, turkish bath and jacuzzi. The outdoor swimming pool has spectacular views. There are 2 and both finish in the cliff, so you can see great views from the swimming pool. All of the pools have free towels, so you don't have to get any. The deck-chairs are free, and the best view are in are those in between the 2 pools. Inside the rooms there are slippers, so you don't need to take any. They're a bit hidden in one cupboard. Also bathrobes are in the bathroom, behind the door. Breakfast is very good, you can have omelettes and eggs done in front of you. The personnel is very helpful and kind. We had dinner once in the Brasserie (buffet) which is maybe could be better, but its acceptable. We also had dinner in the O'Briens (Irish Bar outside the hotel), and we had a great dinner for 14 Euros each person. The restaurants near the hotel are also very good, and remarkaly good are Taj Mahal (indian food, great tandoori and curry!) and Sheng (asian and thai food), both in rua Imperatriz Amelia. Finally, the visits planned by the hotel are very good, we went to the Sea Pleasures boat trip, in which we saw dolphins and whales and swam in front of the breath-taking Cabo Girao. It was 3 hours trip for 25 Euro each and the boat had food & drinks. Also we went to the nearby Lido Monumental Shopping Centre in which there is the hotel-recommended Strawberry World guides. We took the 1 day visit to the west, and 8-hour trip for 29 Euro each, with very good and professional guides and very comfortable bus with air conditioner. Some tips for the new travellers in Madeira: - if you fly TAP to Madeira, the airport bus (there is only one) is free. - you must buy bus tickets in the kiosks (ask the hotel reception), there you can buy 2 way tickets for 1.5 Euro. Otherwise, they cost 1.4 Euro for 1-way. - There is free wifi internet in the centre of Funchal. I hope our review is helpful to someone. We're a young couple and just had a great time in Madeira! We hope to come back to the Crowne Plaza soon."

Weâve been to this hotel twice and wil...
"Weâve been to this hotel twice and will definitely return. Itâs very cheap considering the high quality of the bedrooms and public rooms. The staff are friendly and the rooms were kept spotlessly clean. All the bedrooms have views of the sea. The breakfasts were vast & delicious and the once a week 'Madeiran' buffets (the only evening meals we had) were great. All in all - Very clean, very friendly, great location and bargain prices."
