Good reports spot on

"We booked after reading reports on Trip Advisor through a company called Happy Holidayz. We'd never heard of them and were unsure as to what expect. All was well, the driver turned up at airport and even though we expected a double room we actually got a bonus, an apartment. We would recommend this company. Excellent views out to sea and the whole hotel was spotlessly clean. All staff welcoming and very courteous. We normally ate out in the evening although we ate in twice. On the second occasion I had to send back the lamb, it was basically fat, and they changed without quibble. We normally ate at Real Canoa (turn left out of reception then follow down hill onto promenade. Take the first incline to the left - at Madeira Magic - and restaurant will be straight in front at top of incline. Alternatively go right off level 5 of hotel along main road and turn right after the intersection). It does an EXCELLENT beef on skewer and beef on sizzling stone and the strawberries and ice cream are plenty enough for 2 people sharing."

"When we booked this apartment, it was so reasonably priced that we fully expected problems. Nothing could be further from the truth. The apartment was right up to the minute, very very comfortable and very spacious. Fully equipped except for a kettle but one was provided within 10 minutes. We were in the middle block, but it seemed a bit of a hike to get anywhere due to the unusual layout of the hotel on the steep hillside/cliff. Everwhere was spotlessly clean and all the staff were keen to make sure we had no problems. On my birthday, they left a bottle of champagne and fresh flowers in our apartment. Being self catering, we only had one meal in the main restaurant, so cannot give an accurate overall opinion. Walking into Funchal will take some time, but is worth the effort at least once during your trip. There is plenty to look at on the way and masses of restaurants and bars to break up the journey! Things not to be missed: Afternoon tea at Reids Hotel - €27, per person and make sure you dress properly! Monte - gardens, church, cable car and toboggan Hire a car and explore this beautiful and spectacular island Funchal market Kontiki restaurant - possibly the best steak I have ever had Cabo Girao - the highest cliff face in the world."

Ideal facilities for disabled people

"We ended up here as the hotel we had booked in to was full. Staff were very understanding and did all they could to accomodate us (?get our custom). Anyway the stay was very comfortable, rooms hug. What is worth mentioning is that the hotel is designed with disabled people in mind, easy acces everywhere in wheelchair - even into the pool, and offers various therapies such as physio and dressing changes, even a safe room for people with dementia. Terrific choice in the fitness/health suite - sauna, mudbaths and all that sort of stuff. Food could easily have been better and was main drawback - poor for vegetarians, eg bean salad with bits of meat added for no good reason. Also bar service a little slow, but all the staff keen to help and accomodate our wants."

"I had a fantastic stay thanks to both Happy Holidayz and the staff at The Golden Residence. The hotel is immaculate, and the staff are so helpful. It is located 100m from the main shopping centre which is open until midnight every night! Madeira is a gem, the weather is fantastic! Goodbyr canaries, there is no comparison. It is not full of old people, I am 32 and there were plenty of eople at the hotel who were younger than me. All in all a bargain, I would pay double to return if I had to."

"We couldn't believe the rate we got for this hotel so weren't quite sure what to expect but it was superb from start to finish. The staff throughout are efficient, helpful, professional and very welcoming. The public areas are cool and contemporary and very stylishly furnished. The apartment was enormous with a large sitting / dining area, kitchenette, good sized bedroom, bathroom and balcony. The location is excellent if you'r happy being a little distance from the centre of Funchal; the closer to the centre the more densely packed together the hotels / buildings so it was great to have a feeling of space. A bus stops right outside the hotel and takes around 7 minutes to the centre and the service is easy to use, efficient and inexpensive. The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool, gym, a superb spa and many other facilities (free internet, library, quiet room, sun terraces etc). We had 4 spa treatments between us and each was excellent and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was excellent with ample choice and a good selection of hot food including an "egg bar" for freshly poached, boiled, fried eggs and omelettes. We were on a B&B deal but ate a la carte in the hotel restaurant twice and the quality was excellent and much less expensive than we imagined. All in all a really wonderful stay and we-re already planning our return trip."

Quiet and comfortable beds

"We stayed a week in a one bedroom apartment. This new hotel is stylishly decorated in classic natural materials. The apartment was quiet and the beds were very comfortable. The reception staff were most helpful. I particularly appreciated being offered the apartment at 11.30 am when we arrived although it stated on my booking form that it would not be available until 2.00 pm and they answered other queries very quickly. All other staff were also very helpful. We stayed half board and in the evening there was a large choice of salads as well as grilled meats, pasta, vegetarian and 3 other main course choices. There was also an a la carte menu. Entertainment was generally low key, a couple of musicians playing after dinner and on one evening, there was portuguese folk dancers and singing. We were given a programme of 2 exercise classes each day, although we did not try these. Lovely views and nice walks along the adjacent promenades. Very close to the hotel there was a long tunnel in the cliff which had been used for machine gun placement during World War 2. There was also a nearby shopping mall. It was too far for me to walk into Funchal due to a leg injury but there were regular buses from near the hotel both to there and to the magnificent gardens at Monte. Spa treatments were available at the hotel at extra cost and there appeared to be a medical floor. The outdoor swimming pool had walk in access with hand rails. Our apartment had very wide, sliding, internal doors. There were always plenty of sun loungers and in January it was warm enough to sunbathe but not baking hot. This is an ideal hotel if you want to chill out and sleep well."

"My wife and I previously stayed at Eden Mar in Dec 2004. This time we had an equally good bargain B+B holiday via Co-op Travel at Golden Residence (at the town edge of the Praia Formosa) just outside Funchal. The GR apparently only opened in April 2007, Everything was clean, though a few rough edges already noticeable (eg toilet seat in public area not fixed in any way to the bowl!) Breakfast excellent, enough to set you up for the day (cooked, cereals, yoghurt etc etc) Odd layout of the whole hotel, in 3 blocks, which despite being divide by a a road between 2 of the blocks, are all interconnected by underground corridors. Staff all friendly and courteous, though we had to ask for a kettle. Superb view of Praia Formosa beach and Camara de Lobos and Cabo Girao from the balcony. Our room was the most basic, but still very comfortable. Did not eat in, though other guests on full board said they were pleased with the standard. We found the town centre and Camara de lobos to be walkable, though we are happy to walk a good distance and I'm sure many others will prefer to use the taxis or buses. There are plenty of buses till late on the Monumental Road at the top end of the hotel. If you buy a giro ticket and load it with a few journeys, the rides on the yellow town buses were only 0.80 Euros each. The bus ride (on the Rodoeste buses) back from Ribeira Brava was spectacular for only 2.60 Euros each. If you want the views, you need to take the local route to Funchal as opposed to the service which goes via the autoroute (Via Rapida) The new Madeira forum shopping centre is less than 5 minutes from the hotel and is a typical modern complex. The Pingo Doce supermarket there is open till very late in the evening. There is a nearer supermarket just to the east of the hotel but we stayed loyal to Pingos Eating out was reasonably cheap, the Monumental Grill, Real Canoa (excellent English spoken here) and Restaurant Romana (in the old town) all good value. I tried hard, but never came across Espetada (Beef on a skewer) that wasn't wonderful. Would definitely recommend this hotel (especially if you can get a good deal. We paid £389 for the two of us, including flights) Admittedly, the week of Dec 10th to the 17th was the cheapest of the year. Would love to spend Xmas and New year in Funchal, but prices rise way beyond our means!"
