Loved this Hotel
"My husband and i spent a week at this hotel from 24th June,2011 this hotel is just wonderful every thing and the staff can not do enough for you. Erick our waiter was always pleasent morning and evening so helpful. The weather was very good to for us we went on a number of trips one with Thompsons but found the ones in Funchal was much cheaper and well worth there money. The only downside was the location a little far away from the main town and we was on late sitting for dinner that made the local bus a little late to go into Funchal for the evening (Time 10 45pm) was the next one after the 8 30pm sitting and the return one to the hotel was just after midnight back to the hotel.May be the hotel could run the shuttle bus to and from Funchal during the evenings. But all in all can not fault this hotel and its staff. "

"Whilst acknowledging all the favourable comments made to date, I have a comment to make about night noise. My neighbour next door had a hearing problem which resulted in his TV volume being set to his satisfaction but not to mine. The walls permit noise to be transmitted quite easily and one could, for example hear his telephone ring and the light switch being operated. On the first occasion, via Reception, he turned the volume down for a while, but then increased it. The second evening, there being no answer from Reception, I rang him directly and received a favourable result. This was at 1.15am. Two suggestions: 1) Put a limit on the maximum volume of the TV. (This is done in some hotels already)and/or 2) Offer earphones tyo plug into the TV. (Sockets are already in place on the set)"

"Absolutely superb! This was our first holiday with our baby who was 7 months old. The staff couldn't do enough for us. From the moment we entered the hotel the manager came to speak to us (we'd had baby milk and nappies pre delivered to the hotel) and explained that our supplies were in our room and if there was anything we needed whilst we were there just to ask someone. Then the Head chef came to speak to us to ask us what we'd like for our daughter - any special requests etc. Everyday he did pureed vegetables for her that had been cooked without added salt etc. The staff in the hotel were amazing from the reception through to the restaurant and bars and the cleaners - incredibly polite, professional and friendly. The room was spacious, elegantly decorated and quiet. Food was fantastic - couldn't fault it. The selection was brilliant. Before having our daughter we had regularly used Riu hotels and this doesn't fail to meet the high expectations of the chain. Only down side was the pool was freezing - however, it was at the start of June! I would highly recommend this hotel - in fact my in laws have just returned and we're planning on going again next year. If you're wanting relaxation in calm, quiet surroundings then this is the place to go!"

"The Hotel RIU Palace Madeira is a relaxing resort. Food is delicious and every morning Champagne waiting there for you. The staff are very friendly, efficient and very welcoming. There is a gym 2 outdoor pools 1 indoor pool ping pong table, pool table a little shop in the reception a Tennis court and a childrenâs playground. The hotel is near Funchal and we visited at Christmastime. The lights were amazing!!! Every street was decorated with eye catching displays of sparkle and delight. Traditional carols were played out throughout Funchal and school children sang daily at the outdoor theatre in the centre of town. If you would like a week of excellent value for money, lavish surroundings, superb care, and attention from first class staff, outstanding views and a bit of warmth to your bones during the cold British winter......then RIU Palace Madeira is a first class choice."

Very pleasant and friendly 4 star hotel....
"Very pleasant and friendly 4 star hotel. The staff are brilliant and the culture seems to be that of a family. The manager made himself known upon our arrival, and was always around during our stay. The food was of good quality, and a enough choice to suit every taste. The rooms were always very clean with a good maid service. The pool and surrounding area was well presented, with plenty of parasols for everyone (no need for the towel on the lounger senario). All in all our holiday in this hotel was excellent (have stayed in much worse 5 star hotels) Will definitely return to this splendid hotel."

"Six of us, three of whom were over 70, have just spent two weeks at the Riu Palace in Madeira. We usually holiday together at this time of the year, and this year was probably the best we have had. The service at the Riu Palace was superb, absolutely faultless. The rooms themselves were spacious with plenty of cupboard space, good sized bathroom with shower and bath. We did not have a balcony as we were on the ground floor and had patios which led out onto a grassed area at the side of the hotel but still with a sea view. We had two meals in the restaurant downstairs and would definitely recommend visitors to take up the opportunity of eating here. The service was excellent and we were made to feel very special. The hotel itself was very clean and well cared for, the pools fantastic, all three of them - I recommend the unheated outdoor pool for a good wake up call to the system! The entertainment most nights was quite watchable, particularly the Madeiran folk dancing - that was great fun, particularly when the guests had to join in. The resident band was also first class. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Riu Palace Madeira to anyone. Madeira itself is a beautiful island and visitors should take the opportunity to explore - the coach trips offered by Thomson we felt were very good value for money - we went on two full day and two half day excursions. The weather was mixed while we were there, we did have a few wet days but it didn't stop us enjoying our holiday. "

"I have just spent a week at the Riu Palace. Simply superb. The hotel is situated in a quieter location on the island and its facilities are excellent. The cleanliness throughout all areas of the hotel was at an extremely high standard. I would have to say however, that the hotel's best asset by far is it's staff, the service we received from them all was second to none, and they were friendly, helpful and courteous at all times. From the moment we arrived until the minute we left the hotel on our departure day we were made to feel welcome and treated as truly valued guests. I would without hesitation recommend this hotel to anybody and would not consider staying anywhere else if I ever visit Madeira again. "

"Stayed at this hotel for the second time in 3 months. Very comfortable and nothing is too much trouble for the staff who are very attentive and professional. Two excellent swimming pools and plenty of sun loungers. Food is buffet style and there is plenty to choose from. Quiet location. Look forward to going back again soon."

Clean, friendly, highly recommended
"Being greeted with a complementary glass of Madeira wine during a smooth check in set the standard for a great stay - we had booked a room with a âlimited sea viewâ, but still had a fantastic front view of the ocean. The rooms - spotless, comfortable beds, tastefully furnished with a large balcony which had reclining lounger type chairs. The bathroom was also very clean and spacious with a powerful shower with fitted rails in and around the bath area for older residents and an alarm cord, also in the bath area. The food - excellent, hot, plentiful and expertly cooked with lots of choice. Most meat had the fat painstakingly carved off which is rare and was appreciated. Lovely looking salad dishes with dressings, but could have better labelling as to whether or not they contained fish / meat / seafood, which was a bit frustrating, and tended to avoid just in case (the main dishes and soups are clearly labelled however). The staff â all were so professional, helpful and genuinely seemed to want to be there, many sharing a laugh with the guests. About 10 minutes after we had checked into our room we had a call from Reception to make sure we were happy with our room. The bar - moderately priced, the same as the minbar. The entertainment wasnât great, but watchable, and did their best! They had a classical piano player in the lounge bar which was quite nice. The grounds - well looked after and attractive and the pools clean, however the cold pool floor had a few chunks of the concrete missing in places which were quite sharp, this could really be fixed. That aside, general access in the hotel would be good for people with mobility problems. The hotel shop is exorbitant, get the stuff in Funchal for less than half the price. There is a free courtesy bus from the hotel to Funchal and back 6 days a week, but you must book it from 6pm the previous night. In summary; we had an absolutely brilliant holiday and got rather depressed about he thought of going home! There wasnât really much for a family if they are expecting to be entertained, we didnât see any kids clubs or âentertainersâ but the hotel seems to be catering mainly for more mature guests and romantic couples which was one reason why we chose it. Notes on the resort: There is a promenade at the bottom of the hotel but no real beach, its all rocks. There are no shops nearby at all apart from an overpriced dirty looking supermarket and a couple of snack bars, and it is extremely hilly which is very pretty but probably not great for the less mobile."

A very friendly, clean and peaceful place to be
"On arrival we where given the wrong room but a quick visit to reception and that was corrected. The Director and his staff are of the most professional and friendliest people I have ever come across. The hotel is just typical of a Riu Palace! Excellant in every way. one week is not enough to visit Maderia as there is such a lot to see, I am also very glad to see that it has not been spoilt by the typical touristy type things that a lot of countries have gone in for. Hopefully that will continue. It is a very beautiful country to visit I certaninly will go back..."

Simply the best
"Probably the best hotel for food service quality of staff we have stayed in for at least ten years.. bar prices were reasonable and the evening entertainment very good.I am trying very hard to think of a negative aspect but can't find one. a word of warning though to those going for the first time the resort is hilly and if you're not very mobile this could,be a problem. but there is a regular bus service and a courtesy bus to Funchal every day. All in all an excellent holiday in a top class hotel"

Near Perfect Palace
"After a super hectic week cruising, we were glad to arrive at the RIU Palace. Everything already said about this hotel is 99% true - wonderful food, lovely rooms, hard working staff etc etc. On the not so good side however:- - entertainment is poor - specially when compared to that on offer aboard Thomson Celebration. - tiny minibar in room means no room for own drinks. We asked if we could use the fridge for our own drinks but were told to buy the hotels' drinks. - no ice available for drinks in room. - not allowed to use own kettle to make drinks in room. - prices in hotel shop are unbelievably high. The 4 star hotel next door has a shop selling water, wine, etc at competitive prices - don't bother to trek up hill and steps to the one and only "minimarket" as the prices there are ridiculously high. For shopping of any sort, go on free hotel shuttle bus to Funchal and visit Pingo supermarkets for great value."
