"Found the apartments pretty basic but was all we needed. They were kept clean by the maids. Very isolated from anywhere, had to get taxis but was easy enough. Went to the aquashow park which was excellent,a full day out. The people who owned the bar were very nice, Isobel and Lois, whose son in law Hugo all worked really hard to look after us. Wouldnt go with First choice again. The rep we had was hopeless, never seen her. The marina is good at night, loads of bars and restraunts, all child friendly. I personally wouldnt recommend it for teenagers or young couples as there wasnt much for them but would definately recommend for couples with kids."

"Not the best location in the world for a hotel but very clean pleasant apartments. The rep will tell you it takes 15 minutes to walk to the beach but take it from me, from a fit 25 year old, it takes at least 45 minutes!! and about 30 minutes to the main marina area. Taxis only cost 5 euros to the marina, but there is only one taxi point and there is always a queue late at night. There is a train but its 4 euros per person per day, and has no schedule, it turns up when it likes and finishes on a night when it wants to. The apartments are clean and well equipped, i even had a whisk! There isnt a lot of noise on a night and the bar turns off the music around 11pm. The restaurant is lovely, definitely try the steak on a hot stone- you have to wear a bib though! Dont go here if you have kids as there is nothing for them to do! the only thing for the children is a grabber machine stocked with inappropriate prizes such as guns and dildos! (im not joking) I would go back to the resort as it is lovely, and not at all tacky., however i would definitly spend a little more to get a hotel closer to the centre. On the whole i cannot complain as i only paid 250 pounds for a week in august. Hope this helps"

"we were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of our apartment and the contents,t.v. fan, iron, etc. the hotel staff were polite and helpful,{when they were there!} but on going down to the pool bar we found only 21 sunbeds, which all had towels on by 6 o,clock in the morning. when the pool bar eventually opened we were greeted by staff who didnt seem very interested in serving us,the occasional evening entertainment was really only for the portugese clientelle and the week prior to us being there the travel agent informed me there was a fight in the bar involving at least 15 portugese men fighting each other! the distance to the beach was underestimated and it took 45 minutes to walk there,at a brisk pace, and if we stayed in the town we had to get a taxi back because of a walk across a large open space with a few bushes and trees on it which was quite scarey as i am a single woman with two young teenagers.went to quatera,{dont know if ive spelt that right} for the market and stood in a taxi rank for an hour and a half < got sunburnt.it was a smelly dirty place and the locals werent any help at all.found a little bar down the hill from rio apartments where we had breakfast every morning where we met some lovely people .the owner, i think his name was mac, thats what we called him anyway was exceptional and we felt like we had left behind a friend. i think next year il go back to my usual trip to tenerife, after all, better the devil you know than the devil you dont!!!!!!!!!!"

"We have just returned from a week at the Rio Apts. The hotel is loveley and the staff were so pleasent and helpful. We stayed on the lower floor, we ended up with two balcolnys with good views. The pools were always clean. One thing i will say is that there isnt many beds around the pool but if your like me you will go to the amazing beach. The beach is half an hour work, there is a train that come outside the hotel but its not very reliable Overall I would say this hotel is loveley clean and friendly. I would go back tomorrow if I had the chance."

"I love this place! Yes the rooms are basic but how much time do you spend in the room anyway!? The staff are grear, Luis and Kevin always make sure your looked after! I have been to this place 3 times and have already booked for this year! The stone steak in the restuarant is the best food I have ever tasted! Dont stay here if you want 4* star hotel, stay in a 4* hotel! You get what you pay for, thats value for money and a great holiday! Some people will moan about anything, just enjoy yourself!"

I Have Never Experienced Worse!!!!

"I stayed at this hotel in July 2006. I have never regretted a holiday so much in all my life. When we got off the coach I couldn't believe this was the place we were being directed to. We entered the so called main reception area, I can only explain it as an abandoned bare area like an old closed down building, the reception was closed with sutters pulled down. There was no sign of life in sight we were really worried at this point. Eventually after running round the building trying to find someone our tour guide could wait no longer to get us checked in as he had a bus load waiting on him outside so he left us there to wait on reception opening which was 1/2 hour later than the sign said it would open. Anyway to cut this all short unless you are very very very easy pleased and have no standards for your holiday DO NOT STAY HERE.. There is no air conditioning which is extreemly uncomfortable in hot seasons they offer you a small fan at reception which you're very lucky to get as I think there is about 3 in the whole premises and if you do get it you could blow out your mouth with more force. The rooms are very poor 2 pull out seats for beds in the middle of a room thats packed with drawers and cupboards. pokey is the word. The restaurant food is tastless and the main waiter is very unpleasant. The so called walking distance into the main vilamoura resort is a joke and very poorly sign posted. This hotel is well out of the way. We were obviously overcharged for this holiday as the price we paid could've got us a good quality hotel on the beach in the main vilamoura resort which may I stress is an absolutely beautiful resort and I've never seen such well maintained beaches. But no matter what deal you get to stay here you need to be after no luxury only the most basic of facilities. Were were offered a room to move our luggae into on our last day as we had arranged a late checkout, the room we were given was stinking it hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests overall this hotel is terrible. I don't know how anyone can say its good."

"We stayed at Rio for 2 weeks at the end of Aug/early Sept. We were pleasantly surprised as our 1 bed apartment was very nice. It was clean, tidy and had everything we needed. Our apartment had a view out onto the pool but not all rooms did! The receptionist was very friendly once he recognised us. He let us have the use of a studio apartment on the day we left because we had a late flight home. This was much appreciated, but the room was dark, had no view, and showed us that we were quite lucky with the room we had. There were a few annoying points. Our room was very hot so a fan is advisable. The live music (up to 3 nights a week) often went on past midnight. There was some building work across the road but its almost finished now so noise is minimal. Overall, a very enjoyable stay. Thanks Rio!"

"Arrived at the hotel and the rooms were very clean and everything you could have needed was there. It was basic as we'd expected, but couldn’t have faulted it. People on reception were extremely helpful and friendly - ask them for directions to quiet beaches and locals restaurants as although a short car ride away, was well worth it. Gardens and pool area were well looked after and the restaurant on site was superb - we only tried it on our last night and wished we'd tried it earlier in our holiday. Their speciality steak was excellent. "

Rio has its shortcomings. Sorry !

"Stayed in Rio Apartments for a week in July 2005 (10 - 17 July). Vilamoura is a great resort, clean, vibrant, with plenty to do and see and we will most definitely go back, but not to the Rio Apartments I'm afraid. The problem is that the apartments don't have 24 hour reception cover, in fact its very limited to a few hours during day, closing for siesta and then at 7pm for the evening. There are any number of things you might need that reception service for while on holiday, especially if you are 2km out of town centre and you don't have a hire car every day. Security is an important issue and in the time there we found problems. Some guests had property stolen from their safety deposit box and we also had an intruder jumping into our ground floor apartment - luckily nothing was taken or noone hurt. Thanks to restaurant staff for being so vigilant though, when there was no one from reception on duty. The owners most definitely can do much more on this issue. The rooms also don't have air conditioning but if you ask at reception for a fan you might hit lucky. Otherwise, the bar / restaurant food is excellent and the pool area quiet and well maintained. The apartment we had was very spacious and had all that we needed. Just don't be complacent about security while on holiday is why I'm putting this note up."

"Hey, Just got back from a two week stay at the Rio apartments, left on the 5/06/2005. The accomodation was around thirty minutes journey by coach from Faro Airport so that was the first pleasing aspect of the stay. The apartments were everything we were looking for, an efficient and very friendly maid service who were only to happy to help. The same can be said for the reception staff and bar staff. The room was well furnished and spotless. There was a bar and excellent restaurant which many locals ate at, next to the bar there was a large pool and a kids pool, both were clean and at a suitable temp. The marina was about 15 - 20 mins gentle walk, however should you tire of the strole a taxi is no more than 4 Euros. Also with in a small strole are tennis courts, bowling green and numerous high quality golf courses. An excellent location for golfers who dont want to pay over the odds for accomodation, which serves as an excellent base for at least 5 courses. Overall an excellent time, i can recommend several restaurants / bars / entertainment - e-mail [email protected] My main tip is avoid anything on the 'Freemap' i had two meals and both were out of character with every other aspect of the holiday - very poor guide should be avoided. Enjoy if your going, please feel free to ask me any questions. Regards"

"Our 2nd visit to Vilamoura and the Rio. The apartments are practical and clean, with regular maid service, the reception staff are very friendly with nothing being too much bother. There is a restaurant/ bar on site where Sergio and staff serve excellent food, and make you very welcome. The restaurant is enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. We enjoyed relaxing by the pool which has plenty of sunbeds and parasols. Although the apartments are in a quiet area, its only a 20 min walk to the marina, 5 euros in a taxi or the tourist train passes at regular intervals. 5 min down the road is a supermarket, foreign exchange/ car rental and other restaurants/ cafes to choose from. Once again a great time was had by all. We will be back next year!"

"Stayed here during May 2004, due to a fault of the travel agent we got a studio apartment on the first night, this was quickly rectified the next morning without fuss although it cost us 36.00 euro's extra. It was well worth paying, the self catering facilities were excellent, rooms very clean although the maid service was rubbish. Linen was not changed all week and the towels were simply re-folded and hung up again at least twice! the restaurant attached to the apartments was awesome, the food is brilliant with friendly staff. good choice of cocktails at the bar too as well as every kind of alcohol you could want. The pool needed cleaning every day. I would definately stay here again, it was pieceful and clean, reception is not 24hr cover though!!! Local amenities are close and very well priced. 20min stroll to the marina, 5mins to supermarket, 20mins stroll to the beach."
