"Sorry for being the bringer of bad news because although generally we had a nice time our villa had a major bed bug infestation which resulted in my wife and 2 boys being covered in bites. Worse still was although we were moved to another villa by the resort management after they acknowledged our problem, they have since refused to acknowledge our complaint and denied it happened. I have plenty of photos if anyone wants to see."

unsafe and dirty
"stayed here in August 2011. Was so disappointed overpriced for what you get. We were in a villa ....if thats what you could call it..horrible dirty musty smell, house keeping left very little to be desired...they are not self catering by any means..there is no laundry facilites at all...no play groud area...no restraunt facilities on site and no residents bar... it is not at all suitable for children as its all stag and hen parties. Would never return here. "

"Villanova Resort is ok if you are 18-30 or stag or hen partys ,we stayed in a studio, concrete slabs with a mattress on it as a bed but clean! The noise was terrible started about 4am till 8am the quite .The pool was green people complained about sore eyes we only went in it once and not enough sun loungers for the size of the place. Most nights we took the train to the old town very nice all in all i would go to portugal again but not to stay here."

Disgusting Pool and sleepless nights!!
"Just arrived back after staying at the Vilanova resort for a week with my girlfriend and was very dissapointed with the hotel. Beds were extremely uncomfortable not that it matter much however as from 4 o'clock until about 6 o'clock all you could hear is people coming in from their nights out slamming doors and shouting. When we first arrived we walked past the pool to get to our room and noticed it was green we just presumed that the tiles might have been green, however the following morning when we went down to the pool and had a look at the water we discovered it was just green water!! I don't know what the problem was with it but if you dipped your hand into it, you could barely make out your hand. Very few people were brave enough to get in and those who did complained that the water also smelled very badly aswell. I aswell as many other people staying at the resort thought the pool should've been completely closed off as it didn't look safe to swim in. One person commented saying "it was dirtier than a canal" which still doesn't do justice to how dirty it was. With these problems in mind we stayed away from the apartment building as much as we could as Albufeira as a place is one of my favourite resorts that I have visited and will definetly be returning to Albufeira but DEFINETLY not back to the Vilanova apartments. Although the location of the Vilanova is good right at the top of the strip it doesn't really matter all that much as it is so cheap to get around Albufeira anyway. They offer a tourist train for 3.50 which can be used as many times a day as you like and taxi's were very cheap also. If I was to return to Albufeira I would probably go back to the old town as there was a just as lively atmosphere there with much better resturants and some really good bars like Classic Bar and The Rock Bar. You do get hastled a little bit more in the old town by the people trying to get you into their resturants however this as better than being constantly offered drugs by people on the strip. "

Couldn't ask for anything better....
"When reading the reviews for this hotel my boyfriend and I became worried... but we arrived at 11am (4 hours early for check in) and the hotel staff were great and found us a room we could check into early.
The rooms were very spacious, with a big balcony over looking the pool. The only downside was the hard sofa beds but that would possibly be the only thing I would change.
The pool was absolutely massive and sunbeds were avaliable until mid morning.... if we didn't get a sunbed we'd just use the grass.
Vilanova is right at the end of the strip, so we'd go for a walk every night. Make sure you get a taxi ride into the old town, we forgot all about it and left it to the last night to see! We was gutted.
Don't let bad reviews but you off, it really is a nice place to go.

A week to remember!
"Me and three of my friemds went to Portugal in June and were at first worried that the night life might not live up to our standards.. It was great and far from quiet the strip is great and right on the door set to villa nova which is good for young people but im not so sure older travellers would like it! The apartment was basic but had equipment if you do want to cook in, we went out every night it was all reasonable prices. The only bad point we can point out is the distance from the strip back to your apartment we were in a block to the back of the pool and on a night it was very dark so i wouldnt reccommend walking around on your own.. could do with some lights aswell! Overall i would recommended this apartment/holiday and i would go back."

"Me and My partner stayed in an apartment for two people. We had a lovely view over looking the pool and you could not hear the noise from the night life which was a bonus. The pool and the facilaties were fantastic, I had no problem with anything apart from the state our room was in. The light over the dining table was hanging on the longest wire ever, it came out from the side of the wall and was suspended in mid air above us by a hook in the ceiling, I boiled the kettle and it didn't switch off and boiled over, burning my foot, the toaster was melted all down one side, this never got used, the switches in the bathroom were all smashed and unsafe to touch and the thing that topped it off was the beds. 2 single beds which were also the sofa, on conctrete bases which first of all you couldn't move, secondly they were so hard and uncomfortable it was the worst 7 nights sleep ever. The pool and everything else was fantastic but definetly no comfort in it and very unsafe."

"My husband and I have stayed in Vilanova Appartments many many times over an 8 year period and always loved it!!We have particularly enjoyed having our own little villa....
The Thompson reps always very helpful... great fun with the kids, great to watch them, as our brood are all grown up and we were on holiday without ours! The staff on reception also fantastic, the maids and all that jazz... superb, thats why we kept returning!
We booked an (extra) cheap late deal in May '07 in a studio, nowt wrong with the studios....but we like to eat outdoors and there was no sunshine on our balcony, so... without making a fuss I asked if we could swap rooms, we ended up upgrading to a villa for an extra 10 euros per night.. fantastic!!
Our last stay in Sept '07,our main holiday, we booked 14 nights with Thompsons then via email direct to vilanova we tagged on an extra 10 days! We paid 50 euros for each additional night, a bargain! BUT....we heard whispers of changes to come for 2008, because the owner, sadly, had died.... Thats when the greed set in, prices were doubled, jobs were axed, including the Thompson crew.... So as a result all the kiddie equipement was removed.... and we booked elsewhere when we visited in 2008!
We did go and have a look round at the changes... It was like a ghost town and there was no activity at all,not one person in, or sat by the normally bustling pool, no one eating at the poolside, not one child playing?
We spoke to the guy on reception, and he said they only had 11 people staying in the complex???? It was very sad to see such a thriving holiday complex.... dead.....because of greed...It was an excellent place to take the family for a really fantastic time, but sadly, due to greed, not anymore!
Most people have a budget for such things as holidays, and when the price of the accommadation doubles then there is less in the pot for spends... So you have to book elswhere......
I can only hope that there will be changes to reverse what has happenened and Vilanova becomes a thriving hustle and bustling holiday complex once again........"

"I went away to this hotel with 2 of my friends for a week away in September. We were impressed with the location of the hotel as we are 21 and enjoy nightlife. This hotel is right on the strip in new town. To be honest we didn't pay a huge amount for the hotel (around £250 each for a week) When we arrived the reception staff were very rude. This was throughout our stay too. When we arrived to our room we had 2 matresses on the floor that were sofas. We had to make these into beds ourselves and honestly should only sleep 2. We spoke to reception about this and they assured us they slept 3!
The sheets were not changed atall during the whole stay. Towels were changed ones. The floor was filthy and when the maids "made" our beds daily they literally threw the sheets over all of our belongings!!!!
The air con didn't work and reception didn't care that it was faulty. The walk to the room was in the dark because the lights didn't work! The shower leaked and once again they didn't care, and also the sink blocked. The only good thing was the TV had english channels.
48 hours before we had to call for a taxi via the receptionist. When we arrived and asked her to do this she was very rude and said she wouldn't do it until the evening before our pickup and muttered something in spanish and laughed as we walked off. When we left we had to hand over the keys etc they didn't even acknowledge us! No goodbye or anything!
The one good thing as I've said is the location (if you like loud music until all hours) and the pool was lovely, although the pool area wasn't cleaned daily as there was a mouldy slice of orange stuck to the floor for 2 days!!
Albuferia itself is a lovely place to visit but DONOT stay at VilaNova!!!
After the collapse of XL we had to fly with easy jet who are equally as rubbish. They didn't stock up on sandwiches or any hot food, a few cosmetic items wern't available. Also the toilets were horrible and the staff were not very good atall. Basically don't fly easy jet either!!"

"After reading some of the comments about the Villanova, I can see how easily someone could be turned off of this place. In all honesty, i think a 6 to 7 out of 10 rating is fair.
When we arrived the thomson rep literally just put us all out of the coach with no direction as to where we should go, but we found it in the end. That wasn't the last time we were lost. the next adventure was finding the villa. it is not clearly signposted and in the blazing heat, the last thing you want to do is to walk back and forth with a heavy suitcase (which we did. haha).
Also, we were not aware that we were on 'the strip' until we got there. It didn't casue too much of a problem because our villa faced away from it, but there was still a bit of noise coming from that direction also, but nothing to keep you up at night or anything.
The location was good. whatever you wanted to do was right on your door-step. there was a supermarket onsite and a few take-aways close by, which were a great help!! (if a little expensive)
The Villa was clean (no roaches as mentioned in another review). The only thing that slightly bothered me was the musty smell, where the villa had not been aired like all Winter. This was easily fixed with some air freshener.
The pool was another story. we didnt venture in because it was primarily occupied by the seagulls. lol. Our neighbour counted 20 of them one day.
The reception staff were very friendly to my Partner and I, which is more than I can say for the thomson rep. very slack and not very attentive.
Very "English" orientated place. We met NO portugese people apart from the workers at the hotel.
If you feel more comfortable being in a place that feels like England with heat (with comforts like BBC 1 & 2 and ITV), then this is the place for you. If you fancy something a bit more authentic, then you need to go elsewhere!! "

"We went there in 2006 with with my 10 year old daughter and her friend, my 2 year old son and my partner. Had a fantastic time. Thomson the dog was out more times then i can remember - my son loved it. We went back again June 07, what a disappointment. Thomson the dog was hardly out, on our last night, i was told that Thomson would be about throughout the day and he wasn't, then at the Casablanca bar, we got there at 8pm, we had the best seats in the house, after asking about Thomson about 6 times, Thomson finally came out at 10:45pm and only stayed out for 15 minutes. My son was very disappointed and i as far from happy to see my son so dissapointed and very tired by that stage. On the flight back, i filled in the questionnaire and i stated how disappointed i was, suprise suprise i heard nothing back. I also went into the Thomson branch and complained, all i got was an apology.
Because my son loves Thomson the dog, i am planning another trip with Thomson Superfamily, as Mrs K Wright stated on page 1, i dont think they are taking anyone but Portugese people as i have tried to book Vilanova but cannot find it!! "
