Do not visit quarteria - it is rough!

"These apartments have a excellent pool area and the accomodation is very clean! If anything it is slightly dated but nothing you cant cope with. HOWEVER.... make sure you do not walk to the marina on a night, it is not safe, we did so for the first week of our holiday and were mugged on the 6th night! the taxi is only about 3-4 euros each way and is so worth it! The hotel staff were very good as after this incident they moved us into a better room as we had had our hotel room taken as well as a camera and money. Such ashame these apartments are near quarteria which is obviously is not a very nice area! But vilamoura marina itself is very nice and i would visit again the area again."

"Sadly l have to agree with a review from 2004 who said the location was the reason he marked the Hotel down. Indeed the walk from the Hotel into Vilamoura was scary and especially when you are told a pilot had been mugged and badly beaten only a week or so before you have arrived. It was a case of pot luck I think however we ran the gauntlet twice without incident. Positives - - Hotel staff very helpful and friendly. - Pool clean and maintained daily. - Apartments very spacious and had everything you needed including free air con. When checking hotel reviews on here we would recommend the airport transfer link we used resort hoppa and both transfers were superb and very easy going. Plus we saved about £70 as well as we normally get taxis. Negatives - - Beds in apartments hard as rock and ok yes after a few drinks did not worry us but in the morning we were both stiff as boards and had to use painkillers to start us off. - Hotel prices very expensive I expect to pay more in a hotel but when for instance a can of coke was 0.55E in the supermarket but was 1.80E (£`1.30) in the hotel that is a rip off - Location was just too far away from the two resorts although the exercise did us no harm. But at night scary when out walking. Recommended Bars and Cafes etc: - Mona Lisa (Best English breakfast only 5Euros) - Dartagnans (Next door to above and open till 1am for Carling extra cold lovely) May go back to Algarve one day but not when exchange rates are bad, it was already expensive as it was. Would try another resort but won’t hold our breathe as in the main we found the locals very unfriendly and all of the graffiti and shanty towns very intimidating. "

"Used these apartments as part of a golfing holiday in October last year and all in all, was fairly pleased with the service we had. Considering the cost as well can’t grumble regarding value for money Apartments were nice and big with enough room on the balcony to enjoy the compulsory early evening bottle of "Super Bok" (the superior lager to Sagres). The beds were a little hard but after a few beers, wasn’t too much of a problem. The location is decent enough, 15/20 minute walk to the marina and there is a supermarket, cashline and a nice little sports bar 5 minutes the other way. Only real moan about the apartments was the location of the two we got. When we booked the two, we had asked on the booking for adjacent apartments. They were quite a bit away and because of the dated way the apartments were set up there was no corridor or path linking them. The result was a decent walk (round the outside of the building) between apartments. As I say because they were so reasonably priced, it is merely a minor beef."

"At night, this is not a great place unless you prefer to stay at a complex, in a group or are sober enough to drive a hire car if only a couple, it is basically in the residential side of Vilamoura and sides onto the back of a huge hotel complex which unfortunately for us was all fenced off. This meant a long winded 40 minute walk around badly lit main roads to the harbour (we didn't feel safe) or a dodgier walk along a deserted beach front (which in the daytime looked like Beirut with a burned out car and 3 for effect and an open sewer channel!) The badly lit beach front walk was something we wasn't prepared to do so we ended up catching taxi's /driving in to the harbour area most nights, cheap, but we didn't really want to be paying for it. Don't get me wrong, the distance to the harbour along the dodgy beach front was only 10 mins but not worth taking the risk during dark hours especially considering that there was hardly anyone walking our way due to us being in the back ends of the hotels. The apartments were fine apart from our hard as nails mattresses but isn't it like that in most places? The actual layout of the apartment was great, nicely equipped kitchen, good sized bathroom, nothing we could fault and the balcony area was quite large (approx 15' x 8) and overlooked the pool. Parking space right outside the front of the apartment which was good considering we had a hire car most of the week. We didn't venture inside the restaurant but was nicely presented and the prices were just above average as you'd expect although the menu seemed a little lacking in content. There was a well stocked shop about 5 mins walk away but we only used that for alcohol and munchies as most of our eating was in the harbour restaurants. The pool area was kept rather tidy and the pool bar was opened whenever somebody stood outside it for long enough, luckily for me I spent quite a bit of money there so they didn't mind, not cheap though but the Sangria was setting a nice mood all week. Can't really knock the apartment complex as we thought it was really nice but it was just a real shame about the location which ruined it for us else it would have got at least a 7 rating. The harbour area itself in Vilamoura was cool, plenty of the usual touts annoying you (we are a youngish couple) so they never left us alone, there was one night when it got really busy you got all the playboys and poseurs out in their flash sports cars, Bentleys etc and it had a sort of air of Monte Carlo about the place (maybe I was really drunk?) but it was a great atmosphere. I can't for the life of me remember the name of Louis Figo's bar now but we spent a lot of time in there anyway as it was a lively place."

"We have stayed in these apartments for many years, always in August. They offer a quiet haven amongst the busy areas of Quarteira and Vilamoura, both of which are within walking distance. The apartments are clean and the staff are reliable and friendly. The large pool is in a well maintained garden area and is very clean. There is a separate children’s pool. It can get a bit noisy in the late afternoon. A criticism might be that sometimes there are not enough sun beds (although the usual problem of people reserving them without actually using them doesn't help!) Some excellent restaurants are within a 15 minute walk and unless you want to go further afield there is enough entertainment around without the need to hire a car."

"In February very quiet and pleasant. Access to Quarteria takes about 10 minutes walk through residential area to the main road through the town and the beach promenade. Very good beach and restaurants along the promenade. Staff speak excellent English and very helpful. Accommodation clean and spacious we had a 1 bedroom apartment with large living room and balcony on first floor overlooking the pool and gardens. Ideal for those liking a quiet break although noisy Vilamoura is only a short distance for those who want that sort of place. "

"I’ll cut to the chase - this complex would have got a higher score if it wasn’t for the location. It was set behind the infamous (for the wrong reasons) Atlantis Hotel and at night it was a very dark and risky walk into the marina area even though it was only a 15 minute stroll but the stroll was as follows :- Going into the marina area was a 200 yard walk down a completely deserted road with the fenced off Atlantis complex to the right and a derelict area of land to the left, then another 100 yard walk in complete darkness along the same part until you come to an open sewer channel (what a smell!)And the beach front - not for the feint hearted at all. Then another 150 yard walk along a single track twisty road up to what looks like a parking area for cars using the beach, this was lit but still intimidating and my partner and I felt very uncomfortable as our complex was really the last one in the built up area. Oh did I forget the two abandoned and wrecked cars on the derelict land? My apologies. The apartments were really nice and secure, very German orientated with regards to information though and a nice clean pool area, in fact, I’d go again if it was the right location. The reception people were really helpful too but i can’t help but feel sorry for couple’s who end up staying there as it was truly a nervous time when it came to venturing out at night so we took a taxi each night just to be on the safe side."
