Another wonderful holiday
"I last came to the hotel about 3 years ago. When we arrived a few days ago, it was lovely to see that the horrible awning was removed and there was a glow to the building. They have obviously done some refurbishment to the various apartments. Once again, we had a lovely view of the beach which is walking distance (10 - 15 minutes ). We took our daughter to Zoomarine OMD this is a must if you have children - I would recommend birds of prey and the dolphin presentations. Definitely a must see. My daughter loved it so much she watched it twice. The good thing is that the season is closing so we were not bombarded with queues which was a blessing. Would recommend pack lunches and don't forget your sun shades. Overall, the hotel is not luxurious but definitely fits the family bill. We had dinner at the restaurant on our last night and the grilled fish was amazing. Food was crap the last time but a massive improvement as they've changed the chef. If you are looking for a family vacation, this hotel is it. Transfers to and from the various attractions Zoomarine, ZooLagos as well as the water park is spot on. If you are being shuttled to the airport, be in the reception area 5 mins before their timings are impeccable. Will definitely be going back again. "

"This hotel is terrible. There is no shops nearby ,poor breakfast even without tea ,poor dinner. If you want something to drink after dinner you have to pay.Waiters are very unkind. They standing next to you waiting as you finish eating!Long way to the beach. The table to the ping_pong is hardly broken.Chairs on the swimming pool are half useless.Only receptionists are very kind and helpful, rooms are bearable. The trip to the Lisbon rescued our holliday in Algarve because this city is dreamlike. 3 weeks would have been better than 2
"November is not busy and we pretty much had a wing to ourselves. Staff was accomodating and understood our English and responded in Portuguese when we tried to learn their language. The beach is a 15 min walk if you know where to go. House slippers would have been nice as the floors are tiles. On bad weather days, there is not much to do and TV is pathetic. There is no grocery store with in walking distance. The apartment is secluded and our rental car made this OK"

GREAT HOLIDAY, BEST IVE EVER HAD!
"This holiday was by far the best ive ever been to ! I went with my family and boyfrend and everyone enjoyed it. The rooms were spaciouse and cleaned daily and staff were friendly. The pool was brilliant and clean and there was a pool side bar that sold drinks and snacks (bit exspensive). DONt shop in the supermarket on the site vry exspensive! Theres lots of super markets around thats so much cheaper ! The beach was about a ten minute walk, but a refeshing nice walk, you could walk 2 praira da roucha along the beach which was lovely ! Night times you could either stay at the hotel, go to alvoir which had lots of lovely restaraunts, bars and pubs. Or you could go to praira da rocha which was very lively lots of clubs, both about 4eureos in a taxi. All in all a very good holiday and would reccomend it to anyone.. Great for families or couples and will defanatly be goin back again soon !!!! "

"Just returned from the Estrela Do Vau appartments in Praia Da Vau, Portugal. We are a young family who booked a 1 bedroom appartment. Upon arrival we immediately upgraded to a a 2 bed apartment as all the beds in a 1 bedroom were single and small (definately not 4 star quality)which our tour operator never told us that we would have to pull beds together to make a double. Again maybe its just me but 4 star hotels should have a least a double bed in a room thats booked for a family. The apartment itself was spacious both the 1 bedroom (for all of 5 mins) and the 2 bed. However the aprtment was pretty run down with tatty bath rooms, hot water that worked when it wanted and very poor cooking facilitiies for a self catering apartment designed for a family of upto 6. The kitchen had a 4 hob cooker, no oven/grill and 1 socket point for the kettle/toaster/microwave. So we had to chop and change appliances to try and make things work. Cleaners always came around 6 in the evening when we were getting ready to go out for the evening or trying to cook a meal. To be fair though all other complaints like no water every other day and toilets constantly running were attended to the next day. The hotel facilities are ok, a very expensive supermarket. Take a taxi to the large supermarket near macdonalds (you will save a fortune). The pools are ok but unfortunately the towel brigade are allowed to keep there towels there all day even though the rules say not to do so. Forget a lounger after 10.00 am. The area itself does not have a lot to offer without a long walk/taxi ride (except for an excellent beach thats good for some snorkelling). Alvor or Praia Da Rocha offer a lot more in terms of bars/restaurants. Luckily we had a car for the fortnight and were able to explore the area. The hotel is a 4 star rated hotel due to its facilities with barely 3 star quality. My advice would be to go to Alvor if you want it quiet like we did but with options to go a walk down to the shops/bars if you so wish. We enjoyed our holiday but unfortunately not the hotel. Certainly not what it says in the brochure. "

what a fantastic hotel ....
"all i can say about the ESTRELLA DA VAU is what a fantastic hotel it really is. The rooms are very spacious and clean the maids swept and mopped every day and the beds were also made daily .... the staff were extremly friendly and couldnt do enough to help. The pools are also fantastic Its a 10-15 min walk to the beach ... (and the beach in alvor is very beautiful) and a good 25 min walk to Alvor but taxi's are cheep enough. The hotel resturant is ok but i preferd to walk/taxi into alvor to eat .. the nightlife is excellent depending on what sort of thing you like. To eat i recomend BIG REDS STEAKHOUSE , and for a good place to drink i recomend THE SPORTS CAFE (ALVOR) And not forgeting MICHEAL'S BAR that place is absoloutly fab ... All in all i really enjoyed my 14 nights at the estrella da vau and will be returning next year for and 2 weeks ..... if you would like to see a few pics of the estrella da vau please email me ( [email protected]) and i would be happy 2 share them .... all the best and enjoy "

"We've just returned from 12 nights in the Estrella Da Vau, and we had a wonderful time. We did have a slight problem when we arrived at Midday, when we were told by the receptionist that our room wouldn't be ready until 2pm. But when we finally got into our room, we were pleasantly surprised at the size of the room. Admittedly it does need updating as there were some holes in the curtains (moths) But the room was cleaned regularly and the essentials were always provided. There was a problem with the maid service, twice we found our apartment left unlocked, when we'd made sure it was locked when we left. Also we came back from a day at the beach to find the front door not only unlocked, but open and anyone could of walked in. It didn't really cause concern as all our valuables were locked in the safe, but it is a warning for anyone else. Like most others have said, the on site shop, is very expensive, so we didn't use it. The pool and pool bar are very nice, but cold! Location is a bit of an issue, the hotel is situated between Praia Da Rocha and Alvor, roughly a five minute taxi ride to either (5 euros) or a good half hour walk. The beach is about 800 metres away and has a small shop for the essentials there as well, it is a lovely beach, well worth going to, but the walk down there is a bit steep, so may not suit people with walking difficulties. They would have to use the beach at Rocha, which is also very nice. Carlo the Rep, was very helpful and friendly. We found a few good bars in Rocha and Alvor, a couple worth a special mention are: The Lounge Bar in Alvor and the Irish Eye in Rocha, also for a good meal, the Asia chinese restaurant in Rocha is well worth a visit."

"We really enjoyed this holiday, very child friendly, 3 children under 5, they loved the pools, staff were very helpful and friendly, didn't get to the beach much as it was too far to walk, although taxis are really cheap, will definatey go back next year, the apartment is located ideally between portimao, alvor and praia de rocha, all are within a very inexpensive taxi ride, have to say hated praia de rocha, its very commercial and to over crowded. portimao has greats shops and alvor very quaint fishing village"

"Have just returned from a weeks stay at Estrela do Vau hotel. On arrival at the hotel the receptionist was very helpul as we had booked with another famliy and our rooms werent together, however she changed this and got 2 rooms on the ground floor and this was ideal with small children. We had originally booked to stay in Albuferia but this was cancelled through travel agents but was more than happy with the alternative although it was in a different resort. Had a excellent time and the hotel was lovely and set in beautiful grounds. The hotel is quite out of town and a taxi costs approx 4 euros into Praia da rocha or Alvor, but you have to make this journey for a good meal. Found food at hotels restaurant quite pricey and not a great selection! The supermarket on site was also very expensive. There is plenty to do for kids with 3 pools, table tennis, mini golf and a tennis court. Hotel also has a kids club available. The hotel was very clean and towels were changed every day. They only change sheets once a week but think sheets would need changed every 3-4 days especially during summer months. I would definitely return to the hotel in the future and would recemmond it to families."

"exellent holiday when we first arrived wasnt to sure but when we had found our bearings it was fantastic our kids really enjoyed theirselves, little shop on complex was expensive so we got a taxi to portimoa where theres a lidl aldi and a continental shopping centre ,the pools back at hotel were great and the snack bar had some great snacks and drinks . prai da rocha only 5 mins in a taxi but we managed to find a way to walk on the tops of the rocks which took us straight to the shops and resteraunts ,the staff were very friendly and helpful and the apartment was really good and spacios we had a 2 bed apartment with full fitted kitchen shower room and bathroom, the balcony faced over the pools so we could see the kids all the time .the rep what can i say she was fantastic there when you needed her and even if you didnt she would come to find us to make sure we were ok the kids loved her really sad to say goodbye mags was her name a real credit to the tour operaters keep this lady with you ."

"Just had a fantastic week in Portugal, stayed in the Estralla Do Vau appartments and was pleasently surprised after reading some of the negative reviews. There was only the 2 of us but we had a very spacious 1 bed apartment which was very very clean, no cupboard doors hanging off as in previous reviews. We had a TV which showed BBC1 and ITV. We had maid service every day with clean sheets and towels. Our room over looked the countryside and was very peaceful. We didn't spend any time around the pool as the beaches are just too gorgeous to miss. The apartments are a little out of the way but if you like walking which we do then it's not a problem, taxis are very cheap though. In my view I would definitely go back. If I have to be picky, there is only 1 supermarket which is part of the hotel and it's very very expensive. The only independant one we found which was reasonable was in Praia Do Rocha."
