Would definitely return here
"Having spent many holidays in Spain this was our first time in Portugal, although the resort is only just over the border. I cannot really argue with any of the reviews here, but in our opinion we were both more than happy with our early December weeks break. We would certainly return. No, the food was not your usual dive in and gorge yourself buffet style, but it was more than sufficient for us both, and we are exceptionally fussy eaters who both enjoy full stomachs! Yes, Maria on reception was loud, but we can honestly guarantee that we have never met a happier and more pleasant receptionist. Our room was as we expected, clean and tidy with a south facing balcony. The air conditioning, set to warm, ran quietly and was appreciated in the evenings. Beds were made up every day with sheets changed twice and towels replaced as soon as necessary. I would say though that a kettle would be appreciated. The resort itself was pleasant and quiet (it was early December) and the beach is out of this world. Even in the height of summer you would have no problem claiming a quarter acre of beach to yourself! We were assured by Brits living over there that this area of the Algarve is trouble free compared to the problems that are being faced at the busier resorts. I would agree that the resort would probably suit over 30's rather than early 20's, but there are plenty of bars and eateries. We are fully intending to return here at a more busy time of year. "

Food for thought
"We have just come back from spending a week in the Casablanca Inn in Monte Gordo over Christmas. I must admit that the dinners were absolutely terrible! Yes we had booked half board. The breakfast was traditional English/Continental mixure of hot fatty Bacon breakfast to a yoghurt/fruity/cereals selection. They were served at 8 â 10 a.m. The evening meal was between 7 â 9 p.m. This consisted of a 3 course meal. First course was normally a choice of 2 soups, one being runny and the other thick. Each soup had no herbs or spices in at all. A watery runny substance with no flavour. Dinner there was 3 choices. However they did serve small portions! So if you have a healthy appetite you will certainly lose weight eating these! The meat dishes seem so fatty (they definitely brought the cheapest cut from the butchers) served with 2 veg. The mushroom or ham omelette and salad was an optional dish which consisted of a teaspoon of ham cooked with eggs and 3 small lettuce leaves with 2 slices of tomatoes and 2 of cucumber. Yes this was the main meal of the day, it was a joke! It might have been nice to have extra things on the table to spice up the dinners too, like chutneys, mayonnaise and other additional dressings for even the dinners had no taste to them. For sweet there were 3 choices. A sweet (normally a Portuguese cake) ice cream, or a fruit. However they did make an effort for Christmas day dinner with extra vegetables and 2 starters and half a plate full of Turkey. The rooms were clean with basic amenities. It would have been good to have cups and a kettle in the bedroom as there was a fridge available. The staff was really helpful and the cleaners & waiters worked really hard to please everyone. The receptionist was really loud, as though she had been drinking all day! If you like the sound of âOlive Oil from Popeyeâ then you would like her. Cats were often lounging around the hotel on the seats, so beware of the fur on your clothes. The reception and lounge areas were very dark (with low wattage lighting in the evenings) you could hardly see anything or use these community areas for games or reading etc. These areas were often empty. "My sister and I have just spent 10 very relaxing days at Casablanca hotel. This hotel is exactly as the pictures. Staff are friendly, hotel clean, maids come in everyday. Food was good only had one meal which wasnt upto standards. I would recommend this if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to stay. We would definately go back here, as do most of the people we spoke to, who seem to go back year after year. "

We recently stayed here for ten nights. ...
"We recently stayed here for ten nights. The staff were very welcoming, our room was lovely and clean, tho the bathroom was very dark even with the electric light turned on. There is a square in front of the hotel, and both children and adults tend to gather here - the children to play football, or skateboard the adults to chat - this was normally from early evening until late ..... there is a disco around the corner from the hotel who are very choosy who they let in, we sat and watched from a nearby bar (The Malibu bar) and were shocked how many people they turned away ! Back to the hotel - we stayed on a half board basis and the food in the evening was very disappointing but then when you see they only charge people who are not on HB basis just eleven euros you could see why ! The breakfast was ok tho a bit repeatative the main problem being it was waiter/waitress service so sometimes you could wait a long time for your food to turn up and it could be cold when it arrived !!! Overall the hotel was good, the room was cleaned each day and nice clean towels but I would only recommend staying B&B. The hotel is only a few mins walk from the main resort but if you are looking for a busy nightlife Monte Gordo isnt where its happening - all said and done we enjoyed our holiday (besides the food) but we wont be rushing back ......."

Casablanca hotel is very clean and frien...
"Casablanca hotel is very clean and friendly. The food served at breakfast was very good but the 3 course evening meal was outstanding for 8 euros. Beds were clean and sheets and towels were changed very often. Only problem....it was very noisy. Children play directly outside this hotel. We were kept awake until 3am one morning as children were out playing football. At 4am we were woke again by drunks returning home to a hotel around the corner. We did ask to be moved and were given a room away from the outside dining area (which was also noisy into the early hours of the morning). This room was alot better and you could only hear the children a little bit. I would recommend this hotel providing your room is away from the front area. "

Do not stay if you are under 60.
"Hotel was clean and tidy and the staff were friendly but the service was appalling. We did not eat in the hotel after the first day as the food was awful. Building work was going on opposite which started at 9am and finished at 7pm. Do not stay if you are under 60."

"We have just returned from a most relaxing holiday @ Hotel Casablanca. The hotel is well run and very friendly. The staff were able to converse with guests from several countries and were always very pleasant and patient. The airconditioned bedrooms are spacious and extremely clean(the bedlinen was changed every other day and towels every day) The hotel is situated off the main road but is within easy walking distance of the central area and sea. I would throughly recommend the Casablanca as a base for seeing the Algarve"

"Just returned from staying at casablanca inn in monte gordo, eastern algarve. Found the hotel very clean and staff friendly. This hotel is ideally suitable for couples and older people. There is a good choice for breakfast and you can buy an evening meal for 6.95 euros. This end of the of the algarve is ideally suitable for day trips to spain. I would highly advise the day trip to seville (about 25 euros)and also getting the ferry to ayamonte(1.20 euros each way p.p.) Also good was a cruise along the gradiana river to alcoutin and back."

"Small and very friendly hotel. No building disturbances and in a good position in the resort near to, but not surrounded by, the many restaurants, shops and blocks of apartments in the pedestrianised centre. Drawback was the noise of local children playing in the square at night till late and busy bar- it was the Portuguese holiday! Quiet rooms found at pool end of hotel. Bonus points- lots going on along the front at night, good choice of eating places and very quiet pool area to chill out during the day. Overall value for money, but not really 4*"

OK Basic Hotel But building work across the road
"We were at the hotel last week, we found it a friendly enough hotel and the staff were normally very helpful, the rooms were kept clean although they were a very basic accomadation. The food was a bit hap hazard at times, some times we got served when we went in and other times the staff seemed to forget we were there and we had to wait a long period of time before getting served as were other guets's. Across the Road from the hotel some 20-30 feet away may be if that was a building site , which caused some cossidrible noise from early morning. The staff though were pleasant enough and the girls on the hotel reception were lovely and very helpful. We never did see the manager properly although we did see a very miserible man walking in and out of an office who we took to be the boss. The hotel is listed as a 4star hotel and I am afraid if it reached a 2star hotel it was generous. But althe same we enjoyed our stay."

"Booked hotel through internet Holiday company, wasn't expecting great things. Stayed in hotel June 2004 - was very pleased with hotel. Monte Gordo itself in early June is very quiet. Great beaches. Staff in hotel are v. friendly, b&b food is superb. Clean hotel, we had maid service every day which was a pleasant surprise. Only downfall is the darinage system as with everywhere is noisy so when someone is showering the other side of the hotel you can hear it. If you want to stay in a small cosy unique hotel, this is the place. Not a place for children more for couples."

"I booked a "last minute" week in Portugal and I was fortunate enough to be booked into this hotel. It is only a small hotel but the friendliness of the staff and the overall quality of the service and food was excellent. It also has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, not very big but perfectly adequate. I considered it to be great value for money and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a smaller type hotel."
