Close to paradise

Reviewed 16th November 2012

"I´m portuguese, 46 and for the last 30 years each year i spent several long weekend (2 to 5 days) in the Algarve. I know most of the 5 star hotels in the area (some of them very very good). For several reasons this time i try Vila Monte. Is in the Algarve but you don´t feel that. Is in the countryside, 10 Km from the see, east Algarve (less developed and less tourism) in the middle of lots of trees with nice shadows and lots of birds. It´s a small resort with very good service where you can find everything you need. There are 3 pools in three diferent areas, so the guests have lots of nice places to stay and rest. The sound is something between chill out (lots of jack jonhson) anf songs from the birds. Clean your mind and no stress at all. Perfect. I feel like my second house. You need a car. He had lunch two of the days, good food normal price. We didn't have dinner so no experience. Good breakfast. A very good four star. Don't expect nigthlife or lots of people four days of paradise"

A truly fantastic hotel

Reviewed 16th November 2012

"The Vila Monte is a first class hotel set in beautiful gardens only 30 minutes from Faro airport, but feels a million miles. Our Room was spotlessly clean and simply furnished and a stylish modern bathroom; with really good quality toiletries, bathrobes and huge fluffy towels. The grounds and gardens were very well tended with a team of gardeners working hard to maintain them. There are two restaurants; the pool bar for simple lunches and dinner, and the main Orangrie restaurant that is in a dramatically stylish room with a delightful terrace, with views down to the sea. The food in the pool bar was simple well-cooked local style food with great fresh fish every day. The formal restaurant’s food was of a very high standard, with local ingredients given a sophisticated twist; dishes were prepared with care, understanding and skill. Prices for both restaurants were lower than I would expect to pay in England for the equivalent quality. The staff and management were professional, attentive but most of all friendly, nothing was too much trouble; they are a credit to the hotel."

False pretences

Reviewed 30th October 2012

"A word of warning - CN TRaveller recommended the Vila Monte hotel; 'the restaurant with uninterrupted sea views and excellent cuisine'. We also believed this when we visited earlier this year for a 3 days relaxing stay - we checked out after one night. The promised 'excellent' cuisine was on a par with holiday camp food. The restaurant felt like a cheap package holiday room, echoing and lacking character. There is no 'a la carte' menu just a set three course at € 45 per person (this is, apparently a new policy) - the food was tomato soup (similar to Heinz), dried up fried fish (one of which was inedible), and a desert - by this time we were still so hungry that anything would have tasted good. The sea views - well, a few miles away over a built up area. The breakfast - quite frankly the worst we have ever had. And they are a member of the Relais and Chateaux - so it was not cheap."

Excellent hotel in rural unspoilt inland algarve location

Reviewed 26th October 2012

"A wonderful hideaway with 3 stunning pools, great food this hotel is part of the relais and chateaux group which is very upmarket and brilliant. recently refurbished rooms were simple but elegant and the spa was lovely, decent beaches 20/30 mins drive. Faro aiport only 20 mins away a great weekend break was enjoyed by my wife and I just what was needed. This secluded place is highly recommended and whilst it was full when we stayed there were rarely more than 2 or 3 others around the pools. Lets hope this place doesnt become spoilt like much of the algarve. Go there and you wont be dissappointed."

It's all about details

Reviewed 25th November 2012

"In this kind of hotel, it really is all about the small details. The hotel is lovely, the envolving gardens where you can walk and stay for an entire day just relaxing and enjoying the 3 pools, the Spa and the pool bar are just great. The reception area has also a bar and a living room (with a great fireplace that is surely usefull during winter) where you will like to stay for a relaxed evening. Other common areas are the restaurant (very good as people say, we did not have the chance to try it, but the situation is really great), the Spa (I had a relaxing massage with Iris, nice hands), the pools (the one near the spa is really great) and the golf green where you can try your put. As for the rooms, we stayed in the Riad and they are good though not very good and could have more light. The bed is confortable and the amenities very nice. As I said on the beggining, however, it is all about details, and there are a few details where things could be better: we arrived at 3 PM and there was only one person at the reception, that had to register new clients and take two phones while doing it, as a consequence we took 20 minutes to check in; there should be a bottle of water on the room (the Algarve water is not good for drinking) but ours was missing; one nice thing is that the hotel staff opens up your bed, however they could be more carefull and find a better place for the pillows and leave the sheets more nicely; the water fountains around the property are needing some cleaning. Then again, the good details make it worth: after checking in you leave the car keys and they will park your car and take the luggage to your room; breakfast is very good; after a massage you have a relaxing room where they offer you some green tea; I had a personalized card on the room welcoming us; the staff is always ready to help. Bottom line it is a great property surely worths a visit!"
