Definitely not a 4 star
"We have just returned from the Mirachoro and were very dissappointed with our stay. The hotel and rooms were spotless but the beds are like concrete - pillows just flat pads and when we asked at reception for more plump pillows we were told they were all the same but I found one in the wardrobe and asked the bedroom staff for two more - neither of these requests were acted on. Also our room was not serviced till late afternoon which is not very convenient if you want to spend time in your room or on the balcony. The sheets were torn and had a hole in one of them. The towels were thread bare with the majority having gone into holes. They were hard and some stained. We only went bed and breakfast thank goodness as the food was not good. No nice presentation of bowls of fresh fruit - got the impression that it was all done as cheaply as possible. We can't understand how this can be classed as a 4 star. Compared to other 4 star hotels we have stayed in in Portugal I would class it at the most a 3 star. No Menus to give you the option to have evening dinner - but that didn't really matter as the restaurants nearby were excellent and far more friendly and not overly expensive. This was possibly a very nice Hotel at one stage but is now suffering from a air of neglect and lack of investment. Carvoeiro is a lovely village and we would definately go back but not to that hotel. "

"Got back from a week at the Mirachoro recently. I was somewhat disappointed by the hotel and don't think it deserves a 4* rating. The public areas are bright and cheerful but the rooms a little tired. My room was never made up before 4pm which was inconvenient as the weather was not great so I often just wanted to relax on my balcony in the afternoon. Breakfast was no more than adequate. No fresh fruit available. The dining room is on the small side and could get very busy. The pool itself was cleaned every morning but the surrounding area was not always cleaned very thoroughly and used ashtrays etc from the previous day could sometimes be found. There were also weeds growing between the flagstones around the pool. The staff on reception were efficient but not very friendly. Carvoeiro itself is a nice little place and the many and varied restaurants excellent."

"The hotel was clean and extremely colourful, especially the reception and bar areas! Lovely pool area. Weather quite windy for beginning of May but still lovely and sunny and hot until after 6 pm. The choice for breakfast was fairly limited - not fresh fruit (tinned peaches, pineapple and pears), different breads, usual egg variations, bacon, hot dog sausages and cold meat and cheese. The hotel was situated up a hill (although nothing strenuous) - a nice walk down towards the beach was had every day and night to find places to eat - lots of restaurants to choose from and bars too with lively music (sometimes live). Overall, enjoyed stay and would recommend if looking for a quite, relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle."

friendly and fun had a terrific time
"We stayed at the hotel in October 2007 and it was my last family holiday, and i thoroughly enjoyed it. The facilties were fantastic always well kept and not to busy, (though i cannot comment on peak times.) Similarly the rooms were well looked after and a maid came in each day supplying new towels, change beds etc We stayed on a half board basis and though breakfast always had a good variety the evening meal was very limited with pork on the menu every night. However i would also encourage staying at the hotel on a b and b style board because you have such a choice of restaurants in the local area. Lastly i would definatly encourage going on the jeep safari absolutely fantastic!! Overall we had a fantastic holiday and have memories that will stay with us forever."

Good hotel, great holiday
"We have just come back from Carvoeiro, having stayed at Mirachoro Praia for a week over Christmas period. We had a great week. I would agree that the hotel probably isn't a four star (due to size of bedrooms, lack of additional facilities such as coffee facilities in the rooms and minimal choice for breakfast etc) HOWEVER it is a very good hotel. Very clean and all furnishings looked new. Our bedroom was great - good quality fixtures, although would have been nice if the room was larger. The decor of the hotel is very vivid: blues and reds in the reception (from Moorish influence), with other bright colours in the bar and different corridors. NB The hotel rooms are neutral colours (for those that may be concerned with decor!). The location of the Mirachoro Praia is great - a couple hundred metres up the main street in Carvoeiro: a very easy walk down to the shops / restaurants, beach etc. We hired a car from the airport and a plus for the Mirachoro is the size of the carpark: no problem at all parking here. I found the staff at the hotel very friendly and helpful - at breakfast a couple of times I asked for things that were not out and then went and got them. We were only B&B so cannot comment on the evening food. Although would only recommend B&B as there are so many restaurants in Carvoeiro you are spoilt for choice in what to eat. The winter is a quieter period in the Algarve, but anyone looking to come for a break - there are still lots of restaurants open (probably about 20+ when we were there). For those that are golfers, Mirachoro is in a great location for local courses (Gramacho, Pinta, Silves etc). To summarise: we had a great Christmas holiday at Mirachoro and would definitely stay again. We did have some friends that were staying at the Tivoli just up the road, which is probably a more traditional 4 star (with different evening shows, beauty saloon etc etc) if that is what you are looking for. Obviously there is a price difference for this - and we found the Tivoli too large and impersonal."

Not a 4 star hotel
"No way could you class this as a 4 star hotel, lack of staff lack of facilities and very little choice for food,(chips and jelly every night for the whole 10 days) always running out of cutlery and plates with no-one to replenish. You might say that it was the end of the season but the hotel was almost full. The few staff that were there - one waitress in the morning and one waiter in the evening and one person manning the pool bar and the hotel bar -were very polite and tried their best with the rooms being cleaned daily with clean towels and bedlinen every other day, but we have always had such a lot more from 4 star hotels all I can say is that if this is the standard in Portugal we will not be reurning."

"Myself and my partner visited Portugal for the first time last week and stayed at the Mirachoro Praia Hotel. The hotel was very clean and the maids came in every afternoon to make beds, change towels, sweep and wash the floor. They were very polite and friendly, The staff on reception were polite, but as is their nature, they come across a bit angry, but they aren't, it's just their way. The facilities at the pool were adequate. We didn't use the pool much, as we preferred to be out and about most of the time. We stayed half board, and had absolutely no complaints about the food. There was always a variety of Portuguese meals to choose from, which we enjoyed. The head waiter was absolutely excellent. The only complaint we did have, was that the restaurant was a bit understaffed on an evening, and they seemed to have a shortage of cuttlery every morning at breakfast! The hotel is situated in a perfect position, at the top of a hill and out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the town. It's not a long walk into town, and the walk up the hill is good exercise to work off all the calories you are likely to put on with all the gorgeous pastries, etc. All in all, we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend the hotel and Carvoeiro to our friends and family."

"I can only comment on our trip last week and we had a really comfortable stay at mirachoro- we have stayed before - in high summer - and found the hotel in good decorative order with bold colour shaving been added since our last visit. The breakfast buffet was excellent, towels bedding etc were changed daily and the staff were as good as any other hotel staff. Maybe those with negative comments are too fussy, a hotel is basically to sleep in and you get to explore the surrounding area. We will go back."

Good Value for Money
"This is a nice hotel located within easy walking distance to all the bars and restaurants of Carvoeiro. My partner and I stayed on a B&B basis but we never ate at the hotel so I can't comment on the food served there. I would recommend at the most staying on a B &B rate as Carvoeiro has so many restaurants to choose from it seems a shame to pay extra to eat at the hotel every night. I agree with the other comments about the hotel decoration being very bright (lime greens, hot pinks ect) although the rooms themselves are more nuteral. We found the bedrooms clean and comfortable but the matresses were quite hard, the maids seemed to come in the afternoons rather than the mornings but the beds were changed regulary and fresh towels supplied. The pool at the hotel is large & clean with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. The only negative we found was that we could'nt check into our room at the time specified (2pm) as it wasn't ready; the man at reception gave the impression this happened a lot and we were'nt given an apology and they could do with a few more staff around to serve drinks/snacks during the day All in all a good standard and I would stay again."

Nice hotel, shame about the food
"When we arrived at the hotel about two hours after the earliest check in time we were told that our room was not ready. We had to wait about half an hour; the South African waiter at the pool bar was very friendly when we went to get a drink (ice cold, very refreshing) while we waited. We said we could forgive this hiccup because of the nice service we were given at the bar. This however was the only good service we got all holiday, all the staff were miserable and when we accidentally locked the key in the room and went to the reception to ask for another we got the dirtiest look from the lady on the reception desk. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast was ok. I tried the cooked food the first morning. The only problem was that it was cold, and the bacon put me off the cooked food. I just had cereal and toast for the rest of our stay. My girlfriend had the cooked food most days; it was cold almost every day. They could do with another toasting machine and another drinks machine. There were normally queues for both, very annoying. I spoke to someone who was staying on half board basis, he told me he had only eaten in the restaurant once for dinner, he regretted going half board. We were actually quite impressed with the hotel. The rooms were nice; air conditioning was a god send. The hotel was generally kept clean, however they seemed to neglect the stairwells. We saw the same piece of bread on the floor at the start of the holiday and the end of our holiday. I donât think we would stay again, but the bad points I mentioned did not spoil our holiday as we thought it was fairly cheap, would have been different if we had spent more."

"The hotel was good(2nd visit). It was handy for lots, a great place to rest and a few nice wee bars. (don't go to this resort if you want loads of night life) Some of the staff were not so helpful. The hotel did not live up to its 4 * rating. With a little more work it could have been better but all in all good value.. DON'T go H/B the restaurant was not great. You should enjoy the many places in resort.oh.. and decor funky in public areas, i liked it!! The hotel i think could be a true 4 *..but needs a wee gee up and some more staff training."

Food was excellent!
"Had a lovely relaxing break at this hotel. Had read the reviews, but decided to go with an openmind. The hotel is what the Portugese would call 4*, and it was lovely. The room was cleaned and fresh towels put in every day. We were near to the lift and I could only hear it when in the bathroom. The restaurant service was 5*, only 1 waiter on at this time of year, but he was great - and made sure my wife got a vegetarian meal every evening. If it wasn't made by the chef, then he made it himself. Make sure you let them know if you are vege etc, as there is only meat main course options. Starters and desserts have a choice for all. Location was great, up a small hill, but in a quiet enough spot on the main road, and only 5 mins walk from the beach. Has a bus stop outside the hotel for the local service. The pool was quiet at this time of year (just after easter), plenty of beds and brolleys, the jacuzzi was lovely, indoor heated pool was cold - but who cares!, pool bar was closed - but it was being painted by the caretaker at the time! The room decor was basic, but furniture was nice, and the public areas looked great in all these bright colours. Lovely hotel, great staff, and will definately visit again."
