16 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"I have been to Carvoeiro for the last 7 years and love the resort.Solferias is in a beautiful gardened location with every amenity required. The whole team are outstanding, from the welcome( very late flights) But there was still someone there to give us a guided tour and check us in. As there was 8 people in our party I thought we would struggle to get rooms together, but we did. The rooms are very comfortable, spacious. Amazing cleaning service, every day. Free bus to town, 3 times a day. We will definately be going back. Only suggestion would be an update to the decor in rooms. But for the cost of this holiday they were still very comfortable. Also there is lots for children, we all had our pictures taken with a variety of reptiles and parrots on events that the staff had organised for entertainment. Thankyou Solferias, FAB !!! Do NOT book this hotel
"This hotel was a total disappointment!! It is described as a 4 star hotel and maybe it was when it was built in the 70's, unfortunately it looks like it hasn't been touched since! I would say it is a 1 star hotel. It is situated on the top of a winding and very steep hill. The hotel does not do food or snacks and there is no shops, resturants or takeaways near to it; they are all situated at the bottom of the hill. It is therefore a big ordeal to find something to eat. We were told there was a large main supermarket very near to the hotel but we found out it was nearly 2 miles away and needed to a get a bus!! This hotel is unsuitable for all ages especially old people and disabled people. We are a young couple and the location of this hotel ruined our holiday. The inside of the hotel was smelly and the lights where dimmed down so you could not see, presumably to hide the decor and save on electricity bills, putting your key in the door was like a task from the Crystal Maze! The condition of the rooms was awful aswell. It was like staying in a run down smelly bedsit filled with second hand furniture. The carpet was old, drab and full of stains and marks. The kitchen was as basic as you could get and the toaster was totally dangerous and would never be allowed in England. The tv was very old and did not have one English speaking channel. There was no entertainment laid on either. At least the shower was hot but the shower head was broken, so half the water sprayed downwards and the other half onto the side wall. The bathroom had no window and should nave had an extract fan but didnt. Outside things didnt get better as again everything was run down. Half of the sunlounges were broken and when I complained they said they would sort some out but nothing was done. This hotel should be decribed as a 1 star in a very poor location and then if you go you now what your getting"

rated 4stars 2star only
" booked this hotel on the internet saw a couple of reviews people stating it was a good stay but needed updating. When I got there the apartment I booked was not good it was dark smelly because of the carpets they had in all the rooms and the kitchen was not dis arable to cook in had very little equipment the ceilings were painted black and the amphibious was not good I asked to be moved and was put in to the studio apartments across the road from the hotel this did have tiled flooring but was very basic and the kitchen was not in good working order and no kitchen equipment in this apartment. As I had paid much more for my apartment in the hotel the staff were friendly enough to get me a toaster and kettle asked for a microwave but did not get one. The maids came in everyday to clean and do the beds much better then the hotel as the hotel had a very bad smell about it the pool surrounding was not hygienic and needed updating."

"Another trip to a fabulous place, the apartment was upto its usual standard. Lovely time had by all. The pool area was superb, very clean. The staff at the complex were very friendly and spoke great English. The area was brilliant, didn't need the car if we wanted to have a drink. Shops very local, restaurants were plentiful, all round a great holiday. Definitely going back in the New Year, we have already booked our flights."

"Arrival - Our booking wasn't on their computer so the room wasn't ready. We showed the receptionist our confirmation and we were told that the room would be ready in about 90 mins. We didn't mind as we needed to get some shopping etc. We were allowed to leave our bags in the reception area. When we got back we were given an upgrade from a studio room to a one bedroom apartment. Rooms - We had stayed here two years ago for a weekend so we knew what to expect from the rooms. They are a bit dated but very clean and functional. There is a daily maid service ( You can leave your do not disturb notice out if you wish, it doesn't really need tidying daily.) The one bed apartment is very spacious, It has a large lounge with a sofa and dining suite, coffee table and TV ( Only CNN in English) Two bathrooms both with full size bath and shower ( Plenty of hot water). Kitchen area with two ring hob, fridge and microwave and usual cutlery / crockery. Two things I missed were no teapot or corkscrew!! The bedroom has two 3/4 size beds. Plenty of wardrobe space both in the bedroom and the lounge. There is also a safe which has a daily charge of 1 and 1/2 Euros plus a % Euro returnable deposit. Both rooms were served with air conditioning at no extra charge or restrictions. There is also a very large balcony area with resin 5 piece set and parasol. Other facilities - At the rear of the hotel is a decent sized pool and a small toddlers pool. There is a fairly large grassed area with plenty of sunloungers. It was fairly busy on our visit but we always managed to get a longer and never felt we were in anyone elseâs space. We never ate in the hotel but there was a snack menu, I don't think they do evening meals but can't say for certain. There were also tennis courts across the road which were available for 6 Euros per hour. There is also ample parking. Location - The hotel is situated about ten minutes walk ( Depending on your level of fitness) from the centre of town. It can be reached by either a very step short route or a slightly longer meandering route. I believe they also offer the use of the hotel minibus to take guests into or out of town/ beach but we never used this service. Staff - Every member of staff we came into contact with was very friendly, helpful and professional."

"We have just returned from our trip to the Solferias and we were very pleased. Before we went we read the reviews on other sites and had mixed feelings. The hotel is a little out of date and the furniture is interesting (but it all adds to the charm). We had a studio which had a small kitchen, with toaster, hob, kettle etc. Our room had two double beds and a bathroom. It was cleaned everyday to a good standard. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and always very quick to help in arranging cars, taxis, trips etc. Carvoeiro was lovely a little town (much smaller than Lagos and Lagoa) with some lovely restaurants and a little beach. Our favourite were Oasis (great ribs) and Villa Medici - however all have a very good standard of food and a huge variety of dishes. We would recommend hiring a car as there is some great exploring to be done, there are some amazing beaches and little towns to be found on the Algarve. Our favourite beach was Alvor very spacious and very beautiful. Our holiday to the Algarve was a success and the hotel (though a little dated) was a great base."

Fantastic huge beds....
"We have just returned from a 4 day break at Solferias Apartments and my only disappointment is that we didnt book for longer!!. The apartment we had had 2 huge double beds in it, much better (especially if its hot). The air-conditioning was great, as when we were there the weather was absolutely scorching! The beach is lovely, only downfall is the price of the beds and brolly (15 euros) ouch!!, The village itself is beautiful, when I read other reviews stating it was a fishing village, I was expecting a very quiet sleepy village, it was none of that. It was a lovely village with plenty of bars and restaurants, (no lager louts though even though England played Sweden while we were there). The apartments are on top of the hill, but we used to get the 9.20 bus down to the village, and the 5.30 bus back up, then a cab (4 euros) down in the evening (although theres another bus at 5.30 to go back down) and then a cab 5 euros back up in the late evening. One suggestion I would make is that they have one more trip down at around 8 p.m, this would be great! One of the best restaurants there is the Jota Lita, very friendly staff and the food is absolutely beautiful. All in all it was a very enjoyable break, would certainly come back."

Nice but early season
"Solferias Aparthotel is in a nice location but a car is almost essential due to the hill it sits upon. We arrived quite late and everything was set-up except the cot we had booked for our eight month old baby. The person on the front desk explained he The kitchen was also a disappointment, there was no microwave or electric kettle, the kettle provided took ages to boil on the hob and with a baby this was very inconvienient. The pool was very cold and it was dirty when we first arrived, although it was cleaned by day 3. Positive points The view from our room was spectacular, we looked over the pool and gardens which were quite pretty, but the views over the sea were great. The rooms were clean and huge, the baby had much fun crawling all over the place. All in all a decent base but with a small amount of expense could be so much better. With all the little problems it did spoil our holiday slightly, but the Algarve is a beautiful part of the world and should be visited at least once. We will return but we will not stay in the Solferias Apartments."

"My husband and two kids have just returned from a fortnights holiday to the Solferias Apartments in Carvoeiro and can't fault it. We had a huge one bedroomed apartment on the top (fourth) floor which was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The room overlooked the car park but had wonderful views over the charming town of Carvoeiro and across to the sea. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As the first week of our holiday was half term week we were expecting crowds but our lucky kids had the pool to themselves for most of the time, which was brilliant, and there were always sunbeds available. I would strongly recommend hiring a car should you stay at the Solferias because the walk up the hill after visiting the town was very strenuous, particulary in the heat. We always managed to find a parking space in the town and parking was free, as long as you didn't use the small car park right in the centre. The town of Carvoeiro was lovely - with plenty of restaurants to choose from. We tried many of them, but I would recommend La Lanterne and the Indiano (indian restaurant) which has magnificent views over Carvoeiro beach. Wouldn't recommend Tia Ilda - overpriced and food was poorly presented. All in all it was a super holiday - we enjoyed it so much that we're planning to go again same time next year and hopefully back to the Solferias. Thoroughly recommended."

Lovely base, quiet location, great staff. Would go back.
"When we arrived at this place I thought "Oh no". It looked really dated and in need of a revamp but actually it became part of the charm of the place. It was immaculate. The staff were so helpful and it was just a lovely place to base ourselves when spending a few days in the sun. Do beware that it is at the top of a hill about 1/2 a mile outside the main part of the resort but I actually quite liked that. It meant that it was quiet and didn't have loads of traffic going by. I'd definitely go back again."

Fantastic value, lovely staff
"This was an excellent find - my partner and I stayed here for one week and had a wonderful time. The location was lovely and quiet, although the walk up the hill was a bit intense after a few drinks - a taxi back from town only cost a couple of quid! The rooms, although a little dated, were comfortable large and clean. The pool area is lovely with lots of room so you never feel too crowded. The bar was great with friendly staff and a great selection of cocktails! I would recommend this hotel to both families and couples. It was fantastic value for money and made an excellent base for a holiday and a good place to chill out when you did not feel like going to the beach or exploring the towns."
