86 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"We have just returned from Alvor after a brilliant week's stay at the Clube Alvor Feiras Apartments. I have to admit that upon arrival I was a bit disappointed to note that we had actually only booked a one bedroom apartment but, on saying this, the apartments are huge and although equipped very basically, there is everything you need supplied. The children didn't mind sleeping on a camp bed/settee because they were on holiday and my husband and I just pushed the twin beds together to make a double so there was no problem. The maid service was excellent and our bins were emptied every day, the towels were changed promptly and the maids were always polite. There was some noise from the club of a night but that's what you get if you book ahead for a room by the pool..!! There were numerous dogs barking throughout the night but once you've had a few beers/wines you don't even hear them and to be honest we got used to it. Alvor is a brilliant town and we loved it to bits. There is a fantastic Pizza place on the way into the town called "La Piazza" and the food in there was amazing, we ate there three times in all and for a three course meal with two drinks each for the four of us it was never more than fifty euro which was brilliant value. We enjoyed sitting around the pool although the entertainment lady was a pain in the backside shouting for us to play Bingo and Mr & Mrs. when all's we wanted to do was chill and relax but if you just tell her a straight no she doesn't pester you again...!!!! Made lots of lovely new friends and was sorry to leave them but as they say, all good things must come to an end. Alvor we will be back."

Rude Staff - A Real Let Down
"My wife and two children aged 4 & 2 have just returned from a two week holiday at the Clube Alvor Ferias. We have never felt so let down by a resort. The reception staff are the rudest people we have ever experienced bar one male member of staff called Santandor or similar. However we cannot fault the service of the bar and restaurant staff. The apartments are spacious but lacking in the sleeping department in terms of bed space for the advertised sleep allowance. Maintenance faults found in the room, some never rectified despite requests. Even basic things like toasters you have to PAY for to hire. Love Alvor itself would definatly go back again and again, but never would we go back to the Clube Alvor Ferias. A real let down and not value for money."

Better than expected considering other reviews
"My husband and I have just come back after spending a week in the Clube Alvorferias Apartments. They were much better than other reviews led us to believe. We had a few small problems but they were very swiftly sorted. The apartments are large and clean. They are adequately equiped for a self catering holiday, and the supermarket well stocked.
We didn't spend a lot of time in them as there was so much to see in the Alvor area. A 10 minute walk downhill to the town, which has great character. About the same distance to the most fantastic beaches I think I have seen anywhere. We took advantage of one of the tour operators trips - the one to the Best of the West - this included Silves, Monchique, Sagres and Cape Saint Vincent. Altogether a fabulous full day out. The weather was superb, so all in all we both had one of the best holidays we have had anywhere. We would not hesitate to recommend a visit to the Alvorferias
Apartments, suitable for any age."

Much better than expected
"We were very concerned about our booking after reading other reviews about these apartments. We need not have worried...we had a few little niggles but they were rectified quickly and efficiently. Staff were friendly and the apartments large and clean. The rooms were serviced daily. There is building work close by and the dogs did bark in the small holding at the back of the apartments, but we weren't on sight enough for it to worry us. It was rather nice to hear the cockerel crowing in the morning. There are 2 pool areas and they both looked very good - although we never actually used them. There are so many places to visit both by foot and using the regular local bus service - or taxis. We would certainly go back there again.
The apartments do seem to cater for all ages and the shop well stocked.
My husband and I are both is our 60's and we would have no qualms about staying there again in the future. We both love Alvor. "

"just came back from alvor 24th march 2010 went with my hubby 2 teenagers 17 and 18 and our 23 yr old son...wether it was just that time of year but the place was dead..the weather wasn`t bad had a good few days, the apartments were very basic we had 2 studios which consisted of 2 single beds and a put you up. the kids wanted to play tennis which cost 5 euros and an extra 2 euros each for the rackets non refundable..to use the internet was 1 euro for ten mins and the connection is the slowest ever..the apartments are up a steep hill..but you can get the bus which costs 1.40 euros..
we found a great cheap bar THE CHILL OUT drinks were very cheap and the food was great it was 1 euro for a large beer and 2 euros for a short and mixer..the best cocktails we found were at micheals 4.60 euros bit steep but the best ever..that was just at the bottom of the hill.i would not return to alvorferias apartments..but you get what you pay for bear in mind you are right next to a building site"

Ideal as a base
"I cannot help but feel that the reviews above are over exaggerated. The fact remains that the apartments which are not privately owned are no more than a base. Yes they only contain basic utensils, but are you really intending to spend your time cooking gourmet food yourself when you are missing the rich and diverse culture which is available only 10 minutes away? The managerial team are respectful and helpful, to the people who excercise courtesy rather than simply marching up to the desk and banging off complaint after complaint.
About the sleeping facilities, the beds are not intended to be four-poster mahogany, as there are well over 200 apartments in the complex and if they were all top market, maintenance would be impossible and prices of the holiday would skyrocket.
Another thing which I find hard to believe is that the road outside the 'Ferias is the equivalent of a rally track, yes it is busy because it is one of the main roads in and out of Alvor, if you had done some pre-planning and simply looked at a tourist map, you would have spotted this.
We have stayed in this resort 4 times, and only minimal complaints, which were dealt with accordingly, through manners and persistence.
To prospective tourists, please pleeease do some research into the area before you book, and you will see that this is an excellent facility as a low-budget holiday base.
In terms of rating, this hotel was given a *** by the local hotel board, and it compares in similar level with other hotels in the area such as the "Dunas do Alvor""

Lovely Alvor, Lacklustre Alvorferias!!
"My friend and I (two middle aged ladies AKA Thelma and Louise!) have just returned from a week's stay at Clube Alvorferias...... First and foremost the resort of Alvor is lovely, quaint cobbled streets, plenty of interesting shops and lovely restaurants/bars/entertainment and a beach (or two) to die for.
Weather glorious too.
HOWEVER the complex definitely needs a makeover and new staff. Upon arrival after leaving our home in England at 2am to catch the 5.20am flight, some 9 hours later, we were told our room wasnt ready and we would have to wait in reception or go to the restaurant (ha ha "restaurant" is a pool bar) with football, football and more football on the tv day in day out. The reception staff are most unhelpful to any request and just fob you off to get rid of you as soon as they can.
Apartments clean but very basic. No telephone to contact reception despite one of us having two medical conditions that may have required an emergency phone call requesting a doctor, (four times we requested the telephone be repaired but no response). Maids did nothing we cleaned up the apartment ourselves although I hasten to add we didnt make a mess - only made a cup of tea on a daily basis. We paid a supplement in a 2bed apartment to have two bathrooms and the maids locked one and refused to let us have use of it but Thelma and Louise won the day (a secret) we got the two bathrooms without the help of staff (work it out).
Dogs dogs and more dogs barking all night and we were told three robberies whilst we were staying there..... needless to say we will not be going back. Such a shame Alvor is peaceful quaint and very moreish.
Enjoy your stay.

"We have just returned from Alvor, had a lovely time as long as we were not in the appartments! The place is very run down and falling to pieces. Staff were rude and ignored us at recepition on many occasions - especially when we were checking in and had travelled for 10 hours, not good. The appartments were a joke to say the least - here are some of the problems we encountered: headboard fell off wall and hit someone on head, maid took cigarettes from our appartment, the poolside bar had NO water!! (should be illegal), you had to hire things for your appartment when you got there so extra cost and inconvenience of trying to get attention at reception once again!, the double bed was more of a single bed so I had to sleep in fold down bed in living area which was most uncomfortable with a thick metal bar halfway down the bed, 4 cranes outside the front of the appartments and 1 out the back not a good view indeed and Thomas Cook should have told us this upon booking, had to go to the far away pool each day as the nearest one was always busy, the appartment had the most basic utensils, freezer door was broken. Also we noticed a few times guests trying to change their accommodation as they were not happy either though we were strictly told at our welcome meeting that 'all the rooms were the same' ie. dont bother asking to be moved. Overall Alvor a lovely place this is our 4th time to Portugal and probably our last - well at the bottom of our holiday appartment list.
