Excellent hotel, friendly staff, clean and modern
"Just returned from a week at this hotel, cannot praise it enough , the staff were so helpful and were happy to help with any requests we had. The breakfast was fresh bread, croisants, rolls there was cold meat cheese and tomatoes a selection of jams and fresh and tinned fruit to choose from and cereals. The hotel is located at the edge of Ohlos D'Aqua and it is a nice stroll to the few shops and restaurants. I would recommend Ambrosia Nectar as this was my favorite place to eat although we did not have any complaints about any of the other meals we had, Jolly's restaurant was an experience i would suggest you make sure you have plenty of time put aside for your meal there as it did take a very long time for meals to be served , but very nice when it did arrive after some confusion! Jackie and Jose try very hard to make you feel welcome . The little bar next door to the hotel to the right is very cheap and cheerful and you can get a small beer for 0.75 and a glass of wine for 1 euro . The public transport was reliable and very cheap and the staff were happy to give timetables and maps of places to go to . The rooms were cleaned and towels changed on a daily basis The only down side in my opion was the pool area which is small and would get very busy in the summer months . I will return to this hotel and recommend it to friends and family. "

Friendly affordable hotel
"I stayed here for a week. Staff were friendly and polite. Room was spacious and comfortable with daily cleaning & fresh towels only criticism was the lumpy pillows! Breakfast was standard continental but fresh served in a panoramic restaurant which sadly is only used for breakfast no evening meals at this hotel. Bar prices are reasonable to. Pool is small, quiet and relaxing there was enough sunbeds too. Location of hotel is about 10/15 minutes from the village centre and 10 mins to nearest beach and bus or taxi to main resort Albufeira but situated on the main road."

"We have just returned from a week at the Velamar Hotel. The hotel is located in a very peaceful village, not far from Olhos d'Ãgua. It's a 3 star hotel with a 4 star service. Very clean, lovely decoration, friendly staff, free internet wireless in public areas, lovely varandas with table and chairs.
Very lovely continental breakfast with a variety of breads and fruits. The Hotel doesn't serve dinner, but there are several restaurants nearby (including an Indian Restaurant - Tiffany's)! The beach is not far, but if you have a car, go to Praia da Falésia (beautiful beach)."

Very nice hotel.
"Myself and a friend have just got back from visiting Albufiera in Portugal. We stayed at Hotel Velamar in Holos De Agua, we both found this hotel to be very nice and in a good location we paid £300 incl transfer fees for 7 days. Breakfast was good, very healthy. The only complaint is the neighbourhood's barking dogs. Not nice when you come back late from an intoxicating night out. However as females we felt very safe in Holos De Agua its 30 min walk to the Strip and 40 min walk to the old town which is more cultured and cheaper. if you love Thai food check out 'The Royal Orchid'. in the old town, Mmmm! the food is delicious. Taxi's are cheaper than catching the buses, less than five euros and 12/15 euros to the shopping mall, which is a must. People are very accommodating. Overall, a great place for the young/old/singles and couples. One thing, wear flat shoe i.e. flip flops or wedges the pavements and roads have a mosiac look so heels are a no no. This area is good for those that don't want to be the midst of it all. Beaches, cafe bars, restaurants and shops are all within walking distance."

Nice Hotel but in the middle of nowhere
"We have just returned from this hotel after a weeks stay. The hotel is very very nice and the staff are very freindly. The hotel is clean, modern and well looked after, along with the pool.
However, this hotel is in the middle of nowhere, just outside a very small town called Olos D'agua. The Old Town is a good 10-15 minute taxi ride and costs approx 6-7 Euros a pop! There is hardly anywhere to eat in the immediate vicinity but the one decent restaurant that there is, called Tiffanys (an Indian resturant) is absolutely superb, spot on food, service and atmosphere, you must try this place. All the other places we ate at, usually in the old town, were no better than average and whatever you do, don't eat in the new town (strip) because the food and service are shocking.
Getting back to the hotel, the beach is a good 20 minutes walk away, with at least 50 steps to climb after a good lounge on the beach, Get this though, the beach loungers cost 20 EUROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All in all, we had a great time but the Algarve is expensive, beer, food, taxis etc are not cheaper than the UK."

Happy with the Velamar
"We have just come back from a 10 day holiday in Albufeira where we stayed at Hotel Velamar. For a 3-star hotel we were really impressed with the standard. The room was of average size for a double with plenty of drawer and hanging space. It came with hairdryer, TV, mini bar & air con - no extra charge. Full bathroom, large size, bath, shower, toilet, bidet and wash basin. Small balcony overlooking the small pool. The rooms were absolutely immaculate and were kept that way throughout the duration of our stay, linen changed 3 times/week. The public areas and lifts were also spotless and we found the staff very helpful indeed and really friendly. We hired the safe that was in the room and they just charged for a week although we were there 10 days! The only reason we don't give the top rating is the choice in the restaurant. Breakfast was loads of fruit, cheese and ham, bread and croissants and marmalade. We were just B&B but we went in one evening to see what the choice was like for dinner. Again, loads of cold choices and just 4 hot items. One was rice, another was vegetables and not too sure what the other 2 were! So I wouldn't recommend going half board. About 20 mins walk to a choice of 2 beautiful clean beaches - one with a lot of steps the other with none so you can guess which one we used! The hotel is actually about 3km outside Albufeira in an area called Olhos D'Agua. Plenty of reasonably price and excellent restaurants within a 10 minute walk (we loved Tavertino's) but very few shops - no window shopping here! We went into Albufeira by taxi for about 5 euro each way - the bus is 3 euro pp each way so taxi works out less and it's door to door. We were very happy with what we paid for the holiday - just over £600 for flights, transfers and hotel for both of us - everything booked with EasyJet. We're in our 60's and liked the area we were in, but younger people may prefer to be a lot closer to Albufeira. If we do go back at any time we would be quite happy to stay at Velamar again."

"There wasn't really anything about this hotel prior to travelling to the Algarve, so I was a bit worried about this hotel and what to expect. We booked bed & breakfast. Did we pick the right choice?
Once we arrived my first impression was very nice indeed and when we got to the room it was even better. The pictures of this hotel do it no justice.
We stayed in room 11, which over looked the pool, good bed size, even a fridge in the room, plenty of storage and a good AC unit. Rooms were cleaned every day.
The breakfast was a standard continental, a good selection. Don't expect eggs or bacon. Breakfast consisted of bread rolls, croissants, ceareal, fruit, yoghurt, cold meat cuts. The breakfast room is on the top floor, so you get a spectactular view of the surrounding area and sea.
The staff were also very friendly, couldn't fault a thing in the hotel. I would def book again if I went back to the Algarve."

Nice Hotel, Very Clean and quiet
"We stayed here in September 07, and the weather was fabulous and hot. The beach is about 10mins walk, down hill and it's a really lovely beach. Bear in mind, it is then a 10mins walk back up and theres quite a few steps so might be difficult if have trouble walking or prams etc.
The hotel room was fine for what we paid, bathroom was lovely and big. It was all very clean throughout the hotel and we had a room over looking the road (which is a busy and pretty noisy road), asked if we could move as soon as we knew which room we had, and moved us to a room over looking pool.
Pool was freezing - so cold we couldn't get in but lovely sunbathing area etc.
We used the buses everyday, as it is 99% impossible to get taxis. Your pretty close to old and new town of Albuferia but not close enough to walk, it would take an hour or more!! We didn't think getting a taxi would be an issue, but even during the day we couldnt get one, either from reception calling the No or trying to flag one down.
Overall, the hotel was lovely and staff were most helpful. The resaurants have really nice food, especially the Indian 'Tiffanys' next to hotel, gorgeous!!
This hotel is a bit out of the way and taxis are difficult to get but your near a gorgeous beach and buses are pretty regular."

This Hotel is lovely, the staff very fri...
"This Hotel is lovely, the staff very friendly and helpful. The rooms, hotel and pool areas are clean. The breakfast was good with a lot to choose from.
We would stay there again but the down side is the distance it is from 'the strip' and further again from 'the old town'.
Although there are some bars, restaurants and shops nearby, after two weeks you would need a change. It is a good walk into the 'the strip' and being in our late 20's and fit we still found it to be a chore at times. But overall it is a great hotel."

Great Time Had By All
"We booked a 10 night stay for myself, my husband and our 11 year old daughter. On arrival we were very pleasantly suprised that it was much nicer than the photos on the website had given the impression. It was spotlessly clean with wonderful friendly staff. Our only complaints were that the pool was not cleaned as often as we would have liked and was, at times, full of leaves. Also, there was some building work going on that we were not warned about, but in all fairness, this did not affect us that much. It's best feature was definetely the lovely clean breakfast room located on the roof of the hotel, which had wonderful panoramic views. Nice location with some good bars and restaurants nearby and only a short trip the livlier areas of the strip and the old town. We would definetely stay at this hotel again."

"Just came back from a great holiday in Albufeira, staying at Hotel Velamar, which is about a 30 - 40 min walk from the old town and the famous strip where all the pubs are.
Very quiet hotel, but I can't fault the cleanliness, and the staff where very helpful and were only too happy to book taxis/trips for us. The breakfast room is a gorgeous room on the top floor with panaromic views, with a great selection to choose from, not the usual fry up, but there's plenty of cereal, fresh fruit, croissants, bread and yogurts.
The pool is quite small and there's no pool bar or music, but it's nice to relax and go there after the beach, which is about a 10 minute walk away.
The beach is lovely, and was also very quiet, and has a great beach bar where you can get a gorgeous tuna salad for 7 euros. I found the food to be great value for money and most of what I had was delicious, wasn't a fan of the famous 'piri piri' chicken though but definately try the swordfish! Try Matt's Bar for great cocktails and bar staff, and if you're daring enough go on the bull!
I recommend Zoomarine to swim with the dolphins, it may be pricey, but well worth it.
All in all, had a great holiday and would definately go there again, and would stay at Velamar."

Good value for money...Clean small hotel
"Booked the Velamar through TravelRepublic at last min in July 2006 for our 5 night stay in August 2006..We only paid £160 for our stay on B&B basis. Please be aware that this hotel isnt in the centre of Albufeira....(infact poss a 40mins walk away from the strip - 5euros in taxi), but in the small village of Ohlos De Agua, which is very nice and we were pleasantly suprised, but if you have small children and even a buggy the beach, bars and restaurants are down a steep hill. The area where the bars & eating places are approx a 10 mins stroll away...
There is 2 beaches within walking distance...one at Ohlos de Agua, near the shops and bars, then there is Maria Luisa which i would recommend for kids and playing football....it doesnt get over crowded and the sand is compact and doesnt burn your feet.. but PLEASE be careful to watch the early tide coming in.....approx 3pm...
The hotel itself is nice and we stayed in room 121 that looks over the pool. We never got any sun and this was good because we had red hot weather 30deg plus.... i would recommend a room overlooking the pool possibly on the 1st floor because your not on the ground level and your not directly under the restaurant thats on the 3rd floor and from 8am on a morning you have people in there having their breakfast, hence chairs scraping along the tiled floor, so basically an early morning call. Oh and the breakfast isnt typical english...nothing cooked, but a very nice continental selection with bread, cheese, ham fruit and jams...a nice change infact rather than pigging yourself on sauage and bacon..
The bar is ok but we had to ask at reception for someone to serve us and there wasnt a bar around the pool too..No entertainment at night in the bar either, or even CD music playing, so you really need to be going out every night.....On our last day we were told that they were short staffed, but our room was cleaned every day, and immaculate it was too.....This really was the only let down we felt.....
Try the Indian restaurant next door "Tiffany's" - very nice....and even the set meal for 2 is only 28euros FOR BOTH of you with a bottle of wine.....and its still great quality.... and the fish restaurant painted blue and white on the corner near the beach.i recommend the sardines with salad & pommes ONLY 5euros..And for a british pint have a drink at "Pickwicks Bar" on the front too....
On the whole this hotel is great if you get it at a bargain price
Also nearly forgot to say that the resort is cheap and resonable prices in the bars & restaurants too....
If you would like any more advise then email me and i will try to help out [email protected]
Finally a taxi is expensive from the airport approx 40euros each way, but we booked a minibus direct on the Internet and only paid £31.50 for both of us each way...
good luck on your booking......."
