Good for the price but thats about it!
"We booked the holiday late so were grateful to get something for the price we paid. When we arrived our room was not ready yet and so had to wait 2hours for it, at midday this was not a fantastic first impression. We were pleasantly surprised by the room it was clean and spacious and we had great views of the sea. There isn't much around the hotel itself they have their own shop and bar but its a good 10min walk to the nearest supermarket.
When we booked the holiday we weren't told that Albufeira and 'the strip' were both very lively with mostly english bars and restaurants. At night the touts come out and you are constantly pestered walking down the street, also my partner was offered drugs on more than one occasion just as we were walking, even down the main street.
We went to the one of the water parks Aqualand and this was a great day out, not really for younger children but a lovely atmosphere, very expensive inside though.
Overall we had a nice time and the criticsms are not with the hotel but with the surrounding area, the people are lovely and what local cuisine and culture we found was great. We would go back to Portugal but not Albufeira."

Not quite the Hilton....
"We stayed here in Sep '03 - got a last minute deal. Apartments were clean and spacious - all that you could expect from tourist apartments. We overlooked the pool and had views of the sea. There was some noise - mainly from above but this is to be expected from High rise blocks. We were kept awake by karoke a couple of nights also.
Location is good - across the wasteland to the strip and the supermarket down the road is handy - avoid the shop in the complex. We stayed mainly at the top pool as there were very few kids around. Overall - I wouldn't rush back to the complex but am heading back to Albufeira this year as its the best resort we've been to."

Loved Janelas Do Mar
"We stayed at this hotel as part of a package, and after reading some of the comments on here, went prepared to have a horrible time. How wrong I was. The hotel itself is very clean, the accomodation is basic but comfortable. We had maid service 5 times a week, daily towel change, and our beds changed every week, and made every day we had service. Be prepared to climb though, as it is at the top of a hill. In fact all of Albufeira is hilly, so you have been warned. If it's the beach you love, walk into the Old Town and go the Fisherman's Beach. It's lovely. It;s also a more gentler walk back up the hill again! Cardiac Hill down to the beach at the end of the Strip is not recommended for anyone over the age of 21! Anyway, I digress.
We were on the eighth floor and had marvellous views of Albufeira, the Stadium, and the school, which was noisy but not nearly as noisy as the bin-men who insisted on collecting the rubbish at 3am every morning. The lifts were not as noisy as we had been led to believe, although they were a wee bit temperamental. The Stadium lay empty for the whole two weeks we were there, as the footie season was over, but we had the delight of watching a Gymnastics display in the stadium on our last Saturday night. Maybe it's not for everyone though as it started at 9.30pm and finished at 12.30am.
The pools were lovely, clean and the poolside areas were spotless. The heated indoor pool was warm for the first week, and then mysteriously got as cold as the outside pool. We complained about this and we were assured it would be dealt with, it was still cold when we left. The jacuzzi was a kid magnet, and I was a wee bit concerned about the amount of young children jumping around in it, and not a parent in sight! It was nice to relax in though, but I've just read someone else's review and the bit about shenanigans in the jacuzzi, and now I feel sick!
We had a TV in our apartment, we didn't pay for it, it was there in the room, and it worked! So maybe it is included for some, depending on who you travel with. The kitchen is small, but you'd be mad to want to cook in Albufeira anyway, when you can eat chicken piri-piri for 4.50 euros on the Strip. I can personally recommend Oramos for piri-piri chicken and kebabs, and Ancora TopDeck for steaks. For Indian food I can also tell you that the Taj Mahal on the Strip does a mean Jalfrezi!
The staff in the hotel were lovely from the reception staff to the housekeeping staff, and the maintenance staff were very efficient also. Lovely gardens and surroundings at this hotel and all very well kept.
Go and enjoy yourself and do your own thing. We did and we had a ball there. We would certainly go back to Janelas Do Mar, but please, can someone tell Tony, his music isn't so much live, as dead and buried, and his picture seriously needs updating! Incidentally -
Don't go to Montechoro unless you want ripped off. We went to Erin's Isle and paid 1.50 for the smallest coke in the world, and they must have the most expensive Sagres on or near the Strip, at 3.50 it is a whole euro dearer than anywhere else. Nice place though, if you like that sort of thing."

We Love Janelas Do Mar ! ! !
"This is our second stay at these apartments and we love it a lovely walk to the stip and the staff here are all very friendly and helpful Marcio is the man for the cocktail flair at the pool bar this season and Jorge and Bruno in the bar are great. All the staff here have been with the place for many years and it was nice when they recognised us from our first stay 2 years ago.
The apartments are very spacious and the balconys fantastic the views from here are fantastic. The kitchen is small but eating out here is great for the best steak in the Algarve try Farnels on the strip.
There is a wee shop for the essentials at the complex and a Plus (Lidle) only 5 minutes walk away.
I would reccomend Janelas Do Mar to any one the pool is great but there are charges for TV and Gym"

great spot for relaxing
"we had booked a week before we went away only knowing what we had read on this site about our apartments the noise was a bit of a worry but turned out to be nothing .the rooms were clean and very spacious and we had a school arcoss the way from us but you dont really notice them until its going home time the resturant and the bar were more expensive then the bars on the strip or in the old town the life around the pool was good quite most of the time apart from the odd kid running around the holiday would have got an excellent only for the act there were loads of english there and the two kids trying to get there grove on in the jacquzzi and this annoyed me because there was no one walking around keeping an eye on things not one manager after i had seen that i couldnt bring myself to get into the jacquzzi after that
but all in all a good holiday we had a blast on the strip and in the old town"

"we went on a 2 week holiday 2 alduts a teenager and a kid.we found the hotel to be clean and not as noisy as people are making it out to be.we were on the 2nd floor and rarely heared any noise.
the pools were very clean and also they were at a good depth.a bit stupid they way you had to pay for the tennis etc...
the kids had no problem finding friends and enjoyed every bit of it.
the strip is about a 10 minute walk if you go through the old waste land now used for a carpark

A great holiday
"Have just returned from a weeks holiday at thes apartments, and was very pleasantly surprised after reading some less than positive reviews.
The apartments were spacious, clean and bright, furniture was in good condition all equipment was well maintained and in good working order
Maid service was provided 6 days out of the 7 with daily towel changes.
All staff were very helpful and all spoke good english
All areas were well maintained, pools were cleaned on a daily basis, all bars and snack bars were spotlessly clean
I would certainly return to these apartments and would have no hestitation in reccomending them to family and friends.
A good bus service operated from the apartments to both the strip and the old town, a weekly ticket allowing unlimited travel cost 12 euros. A taxi cost 3.90 euros, all taxi and bus drivers were very pleasant and helpful
The resort itself was immaculate and offered all round entertaiment and a good selection of restaurants"

"We stayed in the apartments after booking at the last minute. The apartments are really big and our apartment overlooked the sea and the swimming pool. Plenty of sun loungers, 3 swimming pools, snack bar was reasonably priced and it also had a mini market with everything you need. The staff are really friendly with great English. The location was good, the bus ran into Albuferia but a taxi was only â¬4. The strip is 10 minutes walk away but very load and tacky. Albuferia is much nicer for restuarants and shopping. I would recommend these apartments to anyone who is looking for a nice resort in a quiet location."

Fair but has potential
"My wife and I stayed in these apartments after booking it on the internet two weeks before the departure date. On viewing some of the reviews we were very concerned that we had made a big mistake e.g. "sleepless nights" when one main reason for choosing this place was the "quiteness" it offered within promotional material. However, we both agree now that some of the criticisms within the more negative reviews were a little harse, so dont worry too much if you are now reading this following booking these apartments. That said we did experience some of the negatives for example the slamming of doors, I was unable to pinpoint the actual doors or the reason for their slamming, the doors can be heard slamming both during the day and while not as often, also during the night, why management dont hear and rectify this, I can not say!
The appartment we stayed in was clean, spacious and most things worked fine, however it must be said that we did'nt cook much except for breakfast. Two of the cupboard doors were damaged and some lights didn't work, the bulbs in the bathroom (which has no natural light) kept blowing but were replaced after contacting reception. The entertainment in the bar at night was it seemed geared towards families and didn't suit our own tastes, mostly it involved a man singing along to CDs and trying to get children up to sing or dance! One other criticism perhaps is the extra charges for quite basic facitities for example the children's playground, while it didn't apply to us, we were disappointed to learn that this was empty most of the time due to most parents disagreeing with the fact that there was a charge for its use.
We used the bus provided (involving a daily or one way charge) to access both the strip and the fisherman's beach but eventually realised that you can easily walk to the strip by going straight across the crossroads and up over the hill and through a piece of waste ground used at night as a car park, however the lighting is poor at night so probably best to use this short-cut during the day. The fisherman's beach is beautiful and while the strip is very popular, it is loud and charmless when compared with the fisherman's beach and the square.
Finally, while we wouldn't choose to stay in these apartments again, we did enjoy our stay but probably because we were expecting much worse. The main reason for not wanting to stay there again is that it is slightly away from the main attractions such as the beach, this involves getting alot of taxis while not expensive, does involve alot of queing!"

"We had a fantastic holiday, the apartments are clean, spacious and the staff are very helpful. There is loads to do over there but be very aware it is legal for 16 years old to drink in Portugal. The srtip is a local street a five minute walk from the apartments that offers £1 euro beers early in the evening and som good family meal deals we paid around £40 a night for the four of us including starters and a drink.
We had a taxi to the old town one night which is fantastic again offering great places to eat and the best beach.
If you want a posh hotel pay the extra but if you want clean and reasonable with a great pool for the kids this is worth every penny."

"Mum with two girls aged 13 and 14 from Hertfordshire.
Just returned from Janelas do Mar after 3 weeks. We had a fantastic holiday and the accommodation was excellent, room 304, block 3. The room was spacious and clean. The kitchen had a microwave combo which if you turn the dial to Combo 2 or 3 it becomes an oven. The maids came in daily and provided clean towels and toilet rolls. There were 3 main pools; one indoors next to the jacuzzi; one outside block 2 which was nice and quite big with plenty of sun loungers; and the other, well ... it is great. In block 3 go down to level -2 and you discover what we called the secret pool! Very large with a small childrens pool next to it. A poolside bar for drinks, great chips, ice creams etc. Loads of sun loungers and for a small fee you can hire a lounger mattress and parasol. Reception staff were very helpful and gave us a free map. There is a shop on site but the prices are double to the supermarket down the road which is a 10 min walk. The beds in the room weren't great but acceptable. Really handy was that the TV got BBC1 and ITV really clearly!! The Algarve is lovely and the local beach (which is a bit of a walk) is really nice. You can walk along the cliff top, but be careful, from Oura Beach (at the top of the Strip) to a small beach (which was our favorite) then further on until you get to Fishermans Beach which is where Old Town is - with market streets - really nice!
What they call 'The Strip' is just up from the supermarket (about a 12 min walk) where the restaurants and shops are. We also visited Aqualand which is well worth a visit or two. We hired a car and drove there whereby you can get two days quite cheaply, especially if you pick up a leaflet from the airport when you arrive which gives 4Euros off the price for 4 people each. I must admit the hotel beat all expectations after reading reviews. We would certainly return one day. OK, there is a bit of a walk to the beach etc, so if you don't like walking maybe re-think. If you hire a car it's ideal. Driving there is really easy, Im not the most confident of drivers, so if I can do it anyone can! Along the coast to Gale and Bengal beaches which are beautiful. There are plenty of caves and great beaches to find. Parking is free and quite easy."
