Nightmare Hotel in Albufeira

"Liz & Michael (Ayrshire, Scotland.)

I booked a package holiday with "on the beach" we stayed 25th Oct to 1st Nov 2012 We are very disappointed this hotel was rated 3 Star. NEVER a 3 Star. not even a 1 Star. i would expect basic 1 star to be at least clean.

On arrival, outside hotel was very shabby looking and on a very steap hill.

Only good thing is the location 5 mins walk to old town square lots of bars and cafe's. and only 10 mins walk to the beach.

Bad Points

The room we were given the door would not open easily wood had swollen with the dampness, then the smell hits you damp, damp, damp i opened the curtains & window for fresh air. then i noticed the mould on the walls of the bedroom, i checked out bathroom it was awful more growing mould on ceiling, walls and all round shower curtain. i opened the bedroom cupboard the ceiling in the cupboard was hanging down with water yellow marks on it and the damp smell got worse i was not puting my clothes in there.

We went to complain and ask for a clean room the manager was not very please he acted like i had offended him. he needs to learn some people skills. he moved is from room 31 to 12
it was still a bit musty but it seemed a bit cleaner at first. the so called shower was a bidet with a shower hose attached to wall and a curtain round it. after four days we notice the mould had apeared on the bedroom walls and arround the windows then the next day it got a wipe from the cleaners but you could still see it. sheets & towels were not changed we had same ones all week. walls very thin other guests kept us awake. breakfast was very basic.

I read some reviews before i booked it thought some good some bad went with an open mind. all i can say is, dont waste your hard earned money on this hotel it ruined our holiday i could not afford to just walk out and go else where we had to suffer it, i dont want anyone else to have to feel like we did. cleanliness should be a basic requirement. there should be some sort of reps; checking the hotels before the give them 3 Stars.

Nightmare holiday, pictures on web looks good but they are not what you get.

CHOOSE TO STAY HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK

"hotel basic but clean and tidy great location apart from the walk up to the hotel it is a very steep hill !! we had the breakfast most mornings fruit toasts meats cheese etc coffee machine but cordial orange juice
rooms cleaned daily during our stay shower ok and we even had dressing gowns in the room t.v only had 3 channels a little bit of a ropey reception on them you also get a fridge in the room which was very handy to keep drinks cold and fruit etc.
Staff were very friendly and got to know our faces and welcomed us everytime we entered the hotel.
Overall a gd place and location with the bars restuarants a matter of minutes away as well as the beach good area and people but got offered drugs on a daily basis but just say no and they disappear
would go back to this hotel as the location is great.

"Last week i went on holiday to Portugal, we stayed in hotel Colina Do Mar in Albufura. I would happily review it and say it was a pleasent apartment.
The room was clean and spacious enough with 2 single beds, tv, large wardrobes, air con and a reasonable sized bathroom.
the hotel is literally a 3/4 minute walk to the beach and the little town square yet it is nice and peaceful at night with no noise of nightlife etc.

the only downside isthat it is situated on a hill so not the most suitable for wheelchair users or elderly as you have to walk up the hill to get back to the hotel. it is not horrendous but is worth mentioning.

the swimming pool and sunloungers are situated on the roof where there are nice views and throughtout the day is very peaceful and the area is clean and tidy! staf are very friendly and helpful so generally a lovely place to stay i wouldnt hesitate to return to the Colina Do Mar on my next holiday."

"Stayed here for a short break with a group of friends. We paid £7 a night b&b through travel republic, so we were never going to be disappointed. What we got were simple but clean and reasonably sized rooms with comfortable beds. The rooms were serviced daily and the towels replaced. The breakfast was lovely fresh bread, meats, cheeses, cereal, yogurt etc and set us up for the day. The nature of the hotel is that the noise does carry easily but this is unavoidable. If you look for a cheap deal and get prices like this, you are not going to get (and shouldn't expect) 5 star sound insulated rooms in a prime part of town overlooking the sea!! Having said that, we found the location to be ideal. It was literally a 5-10 minute walk to the main square and also to the beach. There was a great little restaurant at the bottom of the street which did a tourist menu for 9.50 Euros, and numerous other bars and restaurants were no more than 10 minutes walk. One to look out for is 'Bailote' where we had a fantastic meal for around 15 Euros each, the steaks were cooked at our table to perfection and all the meals were top quality. It's a white building on the left, the first in the row of restaurants as you walk up towards the beach tunnel (Rua do Tunel). To summarise the Colina do Mar, for location and value for money you will do well to beat it."

"We were scheduled to stay here for a few nights, but after seeing the room, we quickly decided to BOLT after one night. The entire place SMELLED. It faces a construction site so there is no chance to sleep. Additionally, the entire building has tile floors and EXTREMELY thin walls and floors so you can hear everything (people opening/shutting doors; people talking; people dragging their luggage down the hallways at 5AM. I didn't fall asleep til 4AM!!! The sheets are disgusting as are the covers. The tv has about 3 working channels, all of which are fuzzy in terms of reception. The hotel is in a sketchy part of town. AVOID at all COSTS. The manager looked us up and down with his eyes. Absolutely disgusting. STAY AWAY."

"What a fantastic week we had hotel wonderful, weather wonderful, Albufeira wonderful!

My partner and I booked this holiday 6 weeks ago and did not know what to expect as it was such a bargain. Glad to say we were not disappointed. The Colina do Mar is a lovely, family run, friendly and clean hotel. We were made to feel extremely welcome and our room was tidy and spacious (cleaned every day throughout our stay). The reception area was a little noisy at night, but this was mainly due to it being an open area on which the stairs to upper floors run from.

The continental breakfast was delicious (thankfully no 'English' fry-ups here) with a delicious selection of breads, cold meats, cheese, cereals, eggs, cakes and pastries to which we could help ourselves and eat as much as we liked.

The pool terrace, albeit quite small, was clean with ample sun beds to go around - a real sun trap and good place to top up the tan! The pool was cold, but clean and great to cool off in - we did not experience poor water quality as is written up in another review. It was wonderful to feel that we were on holiday in Portugal and not staying in an 'English' hotel abroad!

The short walk down to old town was pleasant, albeit a bit steep on the way back - though this was for no more than 100 metres or so (legs soon got used to it). There are lots of restaurants and bars to choose from in the old town. We found the best places to eat were off of the main square; restaurants with varying culinary influences (Portuguese, Spanish, African, and Middle Eastern etc.) with friendly, welcoming staff. Fresh fish is in abundance and absolutely delicious (tried a different type every night). The beach was clean and a nice place to relax -the sweeping golden sand and blue water very inviting (cold though). There are lovely walks in either direction along the beach - one way along the sand, or to the harbour and marina (sailing boat trips along the coast taken from here - very enjoyable). Wandering through the cobble streets is a must also.

We would undoubtedly stay at the Colina do Mar again and will definitely be going back to visit the old town of Albufeira.

"we booked this hotel on the basis of the reviews on this website, staying from 23/09/2007 -07/10/007.and wish we had not, first any good points, the only thing good was that the room and sheets were changed every day, apart from that it was VERY POOR
The hotel is on a steep hill,if you have any problems walking then forget it,you`ll take half an hour to get back up the hill after a night out.

The hotel website stated all the things there was, only thing their was t.v.and it only had 4 channels, after complaining tv was changed for one showing 10,not everyone want`s to go out drinking every night.

THINGS THE WEB SITE SAYS THAT ROOMS HAVE
No bar,no iron in room, no hairdryer,no alarm clock, the hotel is a series of corridors [four landings] all night you are wakened by doors banging on your landing and others above or below as people return after a night out.

The lounge consists of three setees and a table outside the dining room it was only in use when breakfast was on
.
The web site photo`s show a bar and snooker table and nice surroundings, forget it, it was always in darkness and not in use

The swimming pool is small but that would have been all right if it were not for the fact that the water was so cloudy you could not see the bottom and it was only 4ft 6in deep, any one swimming you could not see them if they were more than 6in below water.

On the last 3 days of our stay even the surrounds were not cleaned, empty cans, cigarette ends, papers ect all lying from previous days.

in conclusion find a better hotel for about the same money"

"After reading reviews of this hotel on Tripadvisor, I think I was expecting too much from this budget hotel. Don't get me wrong, the rooms are spacious, it's very clean & it's in a great location but it's nothing special. Really you get what you pay for here..a good value basic accommodation.
The main areas where the Colina do Mar falls down is in the outer appearance, the tiny pool & the breakfast. The breakfast is basic self-service,but some things could do with improving - The fruit juices all come from a machine-they taste like bad Miwadi.
The pool itself is very small, so not ideal if the pool is an important part of your holiday.
Other than that though it provided a good base for a great holiday.Albufeira old town is lovely and The Square is only a few minutes walk from the hotel. Best restaurant recommendation is 'Mi Sombrero' a Tex-Mex Steakhouse down near the beach front (just behind the Louisianna). Had two fantastic meals there."

"Just returned from first holiday in Portugal. 2 weeks in the Colina Do Mar hotel, Albufeira.

This hotel is a lovely place to stay. It’s clean and very well run. The staff are friendly and most helpful. The breakfast is of a continental type, but still plenty of choice. There is a small swimming pool situated on the roof, plenty of sunbeds etc... and a very peaceful atmosphere!

The location of the hotel really could not be much better, right next door there is a family run snack bar, plenty of good food and drink! Especially the drinks, great place to call in for that nightcap, you won’t be disappointed with the measures! it’s a short downhill stroll (2 mins) to the main square with plenty of restaurants, bars and entertainment, check out the rock cafe, vertigo bar if you like your music !

The choice of good restaurants is too long to list here, and most are very reasonable. The stunning beach is only 5 mins walk from the hotel; just beware of the overpriced sunbeds etc.

We found the Portuguese really nice people, although we encountered some minor problems in a couple of restaurants, when we brought these to the attention of the staff, they summed to just ignore them, but I think if you look at the history of Portugal they don’t like confrontation ! All in all a good holiday. "

The hotel is very clean, personnel is very friendly and helpful, breakfast is for us very acceptabel (fresh fruit, cereals, coffee, Lion candybar, milk, rolls, bread, cheese, ham): what do you need more!

Short distance to the Albufeira old town. Rooms are clean and airconditioned. Very quiet at nights: sweet dreams.

"The hotel is virtually in the centre of Albufeira Old Town - more like 20 metres than the 200 claimed. We were pleasantly surprised as we'd expected less for the money we paid, the rooms were fairly spacious and very clean due to the daily maid service. As in previous reviews the staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast ample. The pool whilst being on the small side was private, with lovely views across the town and to the sea. Would definitely use the hotel again."
