10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"The rooms and the furniture are very tired and basic, but they are clean and linen is changed daily. The staff are lovely and very welcoming even at 3 in the morning when we turned up after a typically delayed flight out of Terminal 4! When we booked I asked about tea making facilities in the rooms, they said they did not have any but they would ensure we had a kettle and cups in our room on arrival. There are plenty of resturants and bars within easy walking distance, Sliema and Valletta are very close as well. We were diving and just looking for a base and the Alfonso was close to the dive club, so if you are looking for somewhere put your head down and not cost too much money this is fine - we have booked another week there for the end of March."

Not at all 3 stars
"We specifically requested a double bed room but got a two twin beds room, furthermore with very small beds and really tired mattresses. The room itself was a little depressing, the bathroom was ok, the TV was only half working. The breakfast was really poor. We don't know exactly what the standard is in Malta, but this hotel is definitvely not a three stars, maybe a two stars because of the bathroom, but it also could be a good one star. We didn't have so much contact with the stuff (so I have nothing to say about them, only that we didn't see a lot of smile to the other customers from all of them, but one)."

A Total Delight.
"Stayed for 7 nights Bed and Breakfast, Double room 5th floor. Excellent Location, Paceville is a 4 min walk up the road, Restrauants is 2 min down the road. Staff were friendly and rooms were cleaned every day. Breakfast was good plenty to eat (cold platter) IF you want a no frills clean Hotel in a great location at an excellent Price then the Alfonso is for you."

"The Alfonso is a small 28 room hotel. The rooms we were in were OK, nothing special, but a little bit 'tired'. Could do with some money spending on it. The staff were very friendly, helpful and corteous. The breakfast hit the spot until late in the day. It was well presented and plentiful. I can highly recommend the coffee. We only wanted a basic hotel to rest our heads as we were in Malta for a wedding. The hotel served our purposes well. I would recommend this hotel to anyone in such circumstances. Dave"

Nice Basic Hotel, with very helpful staff
"Rooms are basic, but roomy and comfortable and clean & tidy. Breakfast was included and did the job for the morning start to the day. Included juices, tea, coffee, breads, jams and honey, Swiss cheese, cold cuts and hard boiled eggs. St Julianâs is very much a party area and the noise during the night was noticeable, but not to bad. If you are going there to party it is in a great spot. I had a few problems with the booking via late rooms. I highly recommend not using Late rooms ever!!, they were charging well over the rack rates for the rooms. The hotel manager became aware of this when I gave them my booking email for another reason. She organised late rooms to pay the hotel more money due to the rate they were charging me. Rather than taking this for the hotel she refunded me the difference and it made the room prices far more reasonable. If you are looking to stay there contact the hotel direct and they will give you a good rate and you will not be ripped off by some web site charging huge mark ups! Malta is a nice area with lots to see and do and the Hotel was a good base, with extremely friendly staff willing to help with my requests. I recommend staying there if you are looking for a clean basic Hotel to use as a base of operations. Note no fridge or tea and coffee making facilities were available in the rooms although I believe that you could always go to the breakfast room/restaurant and get some."

"Stayed at Alfonso for 9 nights in early September. Great location, close to several great value restaurants, nightlife at Paceville and lovely walk along the prom to Sliema. Wonderful Italian family run hotel, clean with spacious rooms with fantastic view over the harbour. The staff were pleasant and could not do enough to cater for all your needs. Had great chats with 'Super Mario' the head waiter. Air conditioned room and no extra charge for room safe! Although no swimming pool it didn't matter as the beach was close by and there is so much to see and do in Malta we had no time to spend lounging about at the hotel. Complimentary tea, coffee and water in the lounge all day . Bus stop right by the hotel so easy to get all over the island -get yourself a bus pass for unlimited travel. I've been on more buses in Malta than I have at home! A memorable stay, great value and highly recommended. We will definitely be back next year."

Beautiful quaint little diamond
"Stayed at the Hotel Alfonso with my 4 and 16 year old daughters. The hotel staff were very friendly and the rooms were very clean. If you do get a room with a balcony be careful if you take small children. We stayed as bed and breakfast and was happy with the breakfast that was on offer. You can eat and drink as much as you want. We were right next to all the lovely restaurants and one in particular was really lovely and the food fantastic and huge portions."

"Hotel Alfonso is a 3 star hotel in St Julian's - we stayed there in March this year. From our balcony we could see the 'love' sign section of Spinola Bay, the room was spacious and clean, the staff were friendly and very helpful and the location was excellent. They also have internet access. During our stay we met several people from other nearby hotels who were eating breakfast at Hotel Alfonso - even though they had paid for the breakfast at their hotel. The little restaurant was very popular - extensive menu of home styled cooking and very well priced. We felt very fortunate to find this little gem and thoroughly enjoyed our stay."
