Beautiful Views and Lovely Hotel
"We had a standard room Mount Etna View and it was beautiful to wake up to that view every morning was wonderful. The hotel was typical Italian with some fabulous antiques and the rooms were very clean. The staff were very helpful and spoke very good English. The food was good with a varied choice and the service was excellent and of course the wine was superb with a vast range.
We booked through Holiday Options and what they said in their brochure was spot on. We chose the "Bon Apetite" option 4 nights in the hotel and the other 3 we ate out .Our favourite was the "Gallo Cedrone" bar pizzeria In Castelmola. The owners Riccardo & Roberto were lovely and their mama couldnt speak English but was so welcoming and the food was super.
Hotel Villa Sonia was in a pieceful location with fantastic views, fab pool and the bar/pool tender Jay was absolutely brilliant, but so were all the staff.
We will go again!"

My wife and I returned from Sicily last...
"My wife and I returned from Sicily last weekend, where we stayed at Villa Sonia for our honeymoon. We both had an absolutely fantastic time and we both cannot praise the hotel or its staff enough. I travel a great deal with work and stay in hotels all the time, but the service levels at Villa Sonia exceeded my expectations.
We went for a standard room with an Etna view and you could open the doors onto the balcony and lie in bed with views of Mount Etna which was magnificent. The trip up Etna is also something I would highly recommend. If you have any doubts about staying at this hotel, don't worry as the standards in the hotel are top notch and the food is excellent. Word of warning though would be take the next size of clothing with you when you pack as evening meals are 4 courses as standard, so expect to pile a few pounds on!
All in all I would rate both the hotel and Holiday Options 10/10. The holiday reps Adelaide and Venera who are both local people with great knowledge of Sicily will go out of their way to give you the best possible holiday.

Villa Sonia, Sicily is superb!
"My wife and I have just returned from Villa Sonia Sicly where we have spent the last week on honeymoon. I wanted to write a review on here as I completely disagree with some of the poor ratings on here which did give me cause of concern before we left. I have to say we both had a fantastic time and the service from both the hotel and Holiday Options who we booked through was 1st class. The hotel was very clean and full of interesting antique decor and the food was excellent. We stayed on a half board basis and the evening meal tends to be 4 courses so be prepared to pile on a few pounds. They have an extensice wine cellar and everyone who worked there spoke excellent English and were more than happy to teach you some of the lingo! We had a standard room with an Etna view and it was magnificent and we also did the sunset trip up mount Etna which is well worth it. We saw a number fo the hotels in the area after the coach picked everyone up and Villa Sonia was by far more superior looking than the others. 10/10."

"The Hotel Villa Sonia was a very nice place to stay. The staff at the front desk were very friendly, accomodating and spoke and understood English very well. The hotel had excellent views! The pool was also very nice. The view from our room balcony was also spectacular. We ate at the restaurant one night and it was pretty good. The hotel is located in the town of Castelmola, which is just above Taormina. When you walk across the street from the hotel you can tour the town of Castelmola. Castelmola is very small, but full of fun shops and cute little cafe's. Taormina is about a 20 minute bus ride away and the bus stop is right across the street from the hotel. The large hills and sharp turns are not good for someone with motion sickness when traveling back and forth from Taormina to Castelmola. We had the hotel book 2 excursions for us. One of the excursions was to Mt. Etna and another was canyoning at Alcatana. Both were very good! They even gave us breakfast early when we had to leave early for an excursion. The room was very nice and always clean. The beds were a little hard, but that was how most of the beds were in Italy. Overall it was a great place to stay and we would recommend it to anyone!"

Loved Villa Sonia
"We had a wonderful visit to Villa Sonia. The staff was always willing to go out of their way to help us. My only suggestion is to know that the rooms are small - I was lucky with a Deluxe room, but my mom and brother both had very small rooms because they booked the Double Classic. Otherwise, it's an amazing place with views of Mt. Etna. I can hardly wait for my nexxt trip."

Disappointing for us but a great location
"After loads of searching though Trip Advisor to find what we thought would be a lovely hotel we were disappointed to arrive at basically an Engligh package tour destination (mainly for older couples). Thought we'd got a decent room with balcony but a "Classic" room turns out to be at the back of the hotel, about 2 metres away from the road and virtually eye level with it. As the hotel was virtually full we couldn't upgrade to a room at the front (which have spectacular views over Etna) but the hotel were very helpful and we managed to get a slightly better room on the side:
*Whatever you do make sure you have a room facing Etna*
Rooms average with furniture tatty in places and smallish. Around the hotel however the terraces, bar and lounges are really nice and the service is very good. We were only on B&B so can't comment on food at night but the breakfasts were excellent, fresh and filled up regularly so if, like us, you get up later, you don't get the leftovers.
The pool is in a great location overlooking Etna but is totally overcrowded with sun loungers, only a couple of foot apart and quite unpleasant when busy.
If you want a hotel where English is virtually the only language you here, you're not bothered about the pool and if you get a good room looking over Etna you would probably love the place as many other reviewers already but not for us : probably made worse after just staying 3 nights at the Il Borgio at Gola Alcantara (a few miles away) which was peaceful, stunning and totally Sicilian.
A real plus for the hotel though is the location - Castelmola is only a few minutes walk up from thehotel and has some great little restaurants and bars, gorgeous views and a lovely feel about the place. If you ancy a bit of a walk, Taormina is only 20-25 minutes down from Castelmola (via steps not the main road)"

Loved - again
"i recently returned from Villa Sonia, and the only disappointment that i felt was leaving the the hotel! it is such a wonderful place 2 stay, with excellent views of Mt. Etna. i did not find breakfast an unpleasnt experience. the food is certainly different to that which we have here in Wales, but isn' the whole point of going on holiday 2 try new things?!
i found the staff kind and caring, and always gave service with a smile, particularly Jay! they try to encourage people to speak Italian, but are also happy to practice their English!
as for lunch and dinner - yes the hotel is a little pricey, so as long as you don't mind a walk up a flight of steps, it is possible to find restaurants in the little village of Castlemola, situated up the hill from the Hotel.
we also had a very lovely man named Alfio take us to the hotel, a little excentric sometimes but good at his job!
i hope to visit the hotel again soon! maybe 2008 - but that would be three years in a row!!!"

"Imagine our profound disappointment when we checked into this hotel on the afternoon of our 25th wedding anniversary looking forward ro romantic evenings on our terrace with a view of Mt. Etna. That is exactly how the Double Superior room we had prepaid three months in advance was described. Instead, we were shown to a room than had neither a balcony or a patio even though the hotel advertises that all its rooms have one or the other. When I protested, an assistant general manager came and explained that all rooms with a view were fully booked, even though I had prepaid and been confirmed far in advance. I demanded to see the general manager and was told he was out until 7 p.m.. As it turned out, he never showed up (ostensibly) even through our checkout time the next morning. I left a long letter of complaint demanding a refund and, one month later, have had no reply whatsoever.
This is inexcusable behavior and demonstrates to me that this hotel cannot be trusted. It's also extremely hard to reach if you are driving."

Great Hotel in Sicily
"We have just had a good experience on a Holiday Options, The Sicilian Experience, staying at the Villa Sonia Hotel in Castelmola, above Taormina. Food excellent, staff very helpful. Room a bit small, but clean and comfortable. Who stays in their room anyway. Quiet, family run and a short walk into mediaeval hill town of Castelmola. Perhaps not for those seeking bright lights, but perfect for my 60 yr old friend and myself."

A Wonerful Holiday
"We stayed at Villa Sonia in May 2007 and the holiday was everything we expected it to be. The room was delightful - interesting furnishings and a fantastic view. The staff could not have been more helpful and nothing seemed to be too much of a problem.
One point that has been mentioned was the food. We only stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and were satisfied with what was on offer, We did have one meal at the hotel - the Sicilian buffet on Thursday night. This was amazing and the authentic fare was washed down well with a nice bottle of Etna Rosso.
The hotels position is outstanding and the tiny hamlet of Castelmola is a good example of a typical Sicilian villiage.
You wont get McDonalds or Kenco coffee here but if you want to taste the local flavour of this superb "African(!)" Island, Villa Sonia is a perfect place to stay.
Also well recommended is the Etna trip - if you only do one thing, do this!"

"Our room, superior with terrace and etna view, was lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our disappointment was with the food. we were on bed and breakfast terms, the breakfast was poor- no fresh coffee! We ate the set meal offered to half board clients on one evening, it was very expensive and very poor value compared with what else was on offer locally, even at Taormina prices! May be it was because it was very low season and there were very few guests, but be warned , you have to make quite an effort to get down to Taormina in the evening to find other places to eat."
