10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"We chose this hotel from the many good reviews. It's a very friendly hotel situated near the lakefront with splendid peaceful gardens. The service was excellent especially the guidance received from Andreis (Mr Giussepe) regarding boat trips and two outstanding local Restaurants. The hotel was very clean and had a homely feel about it. Our room was on the third floor, with a small balcony overlooking the lake. Breakfast was a delight with Andreis always attentive. The lemon cake was exceptional. We would definitely go back to the Fontana when we are in the area again."

Loved Mr. Guissepe at Hotel Fontana
"Having read reviews in Trip Advisor, we spent five nights at Hotel Fontana and were delighted with our choice. Travelling by train, it was a manageable walk to and from the station. While our room (no. 23) and bathroom were not large, we had a large balcony with a lovely
view of the lake and the hotel garden. However, it's the warmth of the welcome from Mr. Guissepe which MAKES Hotel Fontana. If only all hotel owners were as charming and hospitable as he is! The breakfast
was excellent and Mr. Guissepe was most attentive. The hotel was very
well located being an easy walk to the town centre and even closer to
the ferry wharf at Carciano from where we did excursions on the lake."

A really family hotel
"We were not disappointed on arrival at the hotel Fontana following the reviews we had read.
Mr. Guiseppe welcomed us at the car and carried both suitcases to the lift.
We stayed in room 33 with a great terrace overlooking the lake.
Closet space was a bit cramped but everything went in !.
Guiseppe looked after us at every occasion and breakfast was always something to look forward to.
The weather was not too good but then it seemed all of Italy were carrying umbrellas !.
I would certainly stay at the Fontana in the future"

Best Coffee in Europe
"We stayed in this hotel because it had such great reviews and we were not disappointed. From the moment one arrives until departure, every effort is made to make the stay special. The bathroom was quite small, but was more than compensated by the room with a very large balcony, overlooking the lake. Continental breakfast was probably the best we had in Europe with very fresh rolls and excellent coffee. We would certainly stay here again if our travels take us to Stresa."

Very Nice Hotel in Beautiful Stresa!
"Very nice small hotel in Stresa on beautiful Lake Maggiore! Charming facility close to city shops and restaurants. Very warm and gracious proprietor makes you feel special. Rooms are spacious and clean, price is reasonable. Overall excellent alternative to much more costly hotels in the area."

Great Italian Hospitality at Hotel La Fontana
"Hotel La Fontana is a great value...moderately priced, immaculately clean, lovely breakfast buffet with wonderful coffee served fresh and hot, and truly outstanding hospitality. Rooms have either lake view or view of a lovely garden. Our host could not do enough to make our stay enjoyable. It's an easy 10 minute walk to the middle of town, past a row of huge, palatial hotels. Our host gaves us many good tips about day trips and good restaurants and arranged for airport express bus to pick us us right in front of the hotel for a 50 minute drive directly to Malpensa airport on the morning of our return flight back to the USA.

Like coming home
"We, tre people from Norway, stayed in a single and a double room at Hotel La Fontana for four nights early july 2006.
From the first second we set foot inside, we felt welcome. Mostly because of the Landlord and his warm way of taking care of his guests. He helped us with everything - from restaurant-recommandations till medicin against back-pains!
The Fontana garden is lovely and tidy, with animals and birds, and the view over the Lake Maggiore is wonderful from the room and balcony we rented.
The Hotel Fontana has a homely athmosphere that many other hotels lacks. Yet You get the privacy You need cause «Mister Fontana» and his staff is very discret in a charming way.
We really want to go back to Stresa, Lago Maggiore and Hotel La Fontana some day.

"Our family of 4 stayed at the Hotel la Fontana in March, 2006 & our only regret was that it was for only 1 night. We had a sute with 2 large bedrooms & a small but well equipped bathroom on the top floor (some people might find the tub to be a bit of a tight fit!) .The beds were firm and there were reading lights on both sides of the bed. Each bedroom had a small balcony with gorgeous views over Lake Maggiore & the islands (I asked for a lakeview room when booking; some overlook the garden). Located just off the main road which runs along the lakefront, it was very quiet and we slept well.
The hotel, which was built in the 1940's as a private home, is set in a beautiful garden with flowers and fountains. It is still furnished with many of the original pieces of furniture and and light fixtures & has a charming, old-fashioned feel. There is a large sitting room and a lounge where one can have a drink - try the prosecco!. There is no restaurant (there are many to choose from in the the old centre of Stresa which is very pretty and about a 10 minute walk along the lakeshore from the Fontana) but a delicious breakfast is served in the morning - croissants, chocolate-filled buns, cheese and cold meats, cereals, yogurts, incredible coffee and hot chocolate for the kids.
Above all else what made our stay in this lovely hotel so very memorable was the owner, who has run the hotel for, I believe, 25 years. He is a charming man who made us feel very welcome, so much so we really didn't want to leave! He was very helpful, arranging a taxi pick up to the station in the morning and recommending a good inexpensive restaurant for dinner. All our emails, both when initially enquirying about the hotel and also when confirming our reservation, were answered very promptly.
At 140 euro per night, for 4 people (breakfast included in the price) it was an incredible bargain - by far the least expensive of all the hotels we stayed in on this trip through France & Italy. It isn't in the same class as many of the very delux hotels futher along the Stresa lakefront, but I am sure that it is the warmest and friendliest one!"

"My husband and I and our daughter and son-in-law stayed here for two days this past week. We arrived by car, and they arrived by train and easily found the hotel which was a short 10 minute walk from the station. They arrived first and were shown to their room. We arrived 5 minutes later and were met on the front steps by the owner who told us our "bambini" had recently arrived. We still don't know how he knew to make this connection!!
This is a wonderful hotel and the service and hospitality was impeccable. We had a lovely room facing the front with a view of the lake and one of the islands, as well as the fountain in the front of the hotel and the garden. There was street noise, especially from trucks as the road is a main one through the area. But if the windows are shut, the noise is gone. Most of us have some street noise at home, anyway! The beds were very firm and confortable with very nice quality linens. The only negative, which was too minor for a downgrade, is the very small bathroom.
Our host treated us with the utmost respect everytime we spoke with him. He greeted us in the morning, when we returned from our daily outings, when we left and returned from dinner. He helped us with a restaurant choice the first evening and it was an excellent meal, at the Osteria dei Amici. The second evening the excellent meal was matched at La Rosa Vente which is frequented mainly by locals and was recommended by a very friendly shopkeeper at the wooden toy store.
The second evening when we returned to the hotel we asked our host if we could play cards in the sitting room and he was fine with that. It felt like we were at home and we were comfortable to laugh and speak freely. The breakfast was also quite good with ham, cheese, a basket of rolls on the table, yogurt, cereal, juice, very good chocolate and apple pastries, as well as a torte and brioche. You can have any kind of hot drink you wish. Again the staff was attentive but not in the way. I recommend this hotel highly as the service and facilities were as good as any you would find in a "Grand Hotel"."

A charming retreat
"My wife and I stayed for a week in early Septemberat this charming and beautifully-run small hotel, on the lakeside. Thr bedrooms are of good size, the bathrooms good, and the spotless linen changed regularly. There is no restaurant but the breakfast is of high quality.
The hotel is situated - as are all the major hotels - on the landward side of the lakeside road, and about fifty yards from it, in a large garden with many beautiful trees. There is noise from the road (as with all the hotels) but rooms have air-con, so windows may be closed, if desired. We didn't find that necessary. It is a pleasant ten-minute stroll into Stresa along the lake shore. The room rates are amazingly inexpensive and we found that La Fontana was exactly as we would have wished it."
