Love the Astoria

"My new husband and I stayed at this hotel during our honeymoon. We had a wonderful stay. I requested a lakeview room but it was not available. We got a room overlooking the pool instead with it's own terrace/balcony. It ended up being even better than a lakeview. The room was plenty large, the air conditioning worked, the bathroom was clean, breakfast was lovely and the employees fabulous. I will continue to return time and time again."

Beautiful Views

"We stayed for ten days at the Astoria and felt the hotel had lots of plus's and a few minus's. The Hotel is in a perfect position on the Lake front and Stresa is indeed very beautiful.
We had selected to have 4 nights to eat out and 5 in the hotel. The food was very good although we felt the breakfast selection was below 4* choice. The owners and staff could not be more helpful and friendly and anything that was needed was seen to instantly. The pool area is in need of a revamp but they have a lovely roof terrace with a spa bath that is very peaceful.
The big minus to the hotel is that in September it is Italian wedding season. The hotel had 5 wedding receptions in our 10 days there, where the main dining hall is taken over by the wedding guests. The tranquil place then was taken over by noise and music until midnight, which some of the older guests were complaining about. We decided that we would eat out most of these nights rather than feeling that we were uninvited guests gatecrashing a wedding. We know that the hotel shuts for 4 months during the winter period and that they have to get as much revenue in as they can. But we think that if we had been aware of this beforehand we may not of chose September or picked another hotel as the hotel guests were restricted to where they could eat.
The restaurant that is fantastic is "La Botte" in the town, but you must call in and reserve as the are queueing for tables."

It's all true!

"We have just returned from a week at the Astoria Hotel. I can confirm that it lives up to all the praise which I read in previous reports before selecting my hotel in this resort.
It is family run and you will find that many clients return time and time again. The customer care is everything to the family. The standards of cleanliness are impecable and the management family join in all the tasks including cleaning and helping in the restaurant. The standard of menu , quality of food, and presentation is high. We were there for the big religious celebration on 15 August when all the hotels provided spectacular buffet evenings to which guests were invited at no extra cost. We understand that people in the town judge this hotel's food to be some of the best and we can only agree with that.
We also thought that meals in the garden bar were very good value and stood out above some which we bought in town.

I would agree with a previous comment that it is well worth having a lake view but, from talking to others and being nosey, must warn you that these rooms are slightly less roomy than the rear ones apparently.

The whole experience was brilliant and I would want to stay at no other hotel in Stresa."

Refurbished room a must

"My family and I have just returned from "the Astoria" and upon arrival were allocated a 2.3 star room supposedly for 3 full paying adults. After a strong complaint to both the Manager and his Mother we were eventually upgraded to a re-furbished room which was superb. This was our fourth visit to Italy and the inital offering was in our opinion below 3 star,so insist on a re-furbished room. This aside Staff were friendly and the food was good, downside pool in need of refurbishment and no entertainment in the Hotel."

Third time, for a reason

"Stresa is one of our favorite places on the face of the earth and the Astoria is a great place to stay while enjoying this glorious part of Italy. We booked a lakefront room, on the top (5th) floor and the view from our balcony was so lovely, it was hard to pull ourselves away. Watching the lights come on across Lake Maggiore in the evening as the ferry boats ply the waters is a perfect way to end a day.

The Astoria satisfies us for many reasons: a helpful staff; clean, spacious rooms; perfect location ; easy access to the town with its many shops and restaurants.....it all adds up to a great experience. The included breakfast is standard fare and the location of the dining area with a view of the lake makes it quite acceptable.

Strolling in the evening, one passes all the great hotels lined up side by side along the Lake. The Astoria isn't the grandest, but the price and service will keep us coming back, hopefully many times more in the years ahead."

"typical 4* Italian hotel. we had a room on the 4th floor overlooking the lake, which is a definite must have. the higher the room the better the view. The walk into stresa was a gentle 10 minute stroll and there were lots of restaurants all serving much the same fare.Nice pool, well maintained, although the hotel next door had a pool right on the lake(across the road). Excellent restaurant is the Verbano on Isola Madre which the concierge will book for you."

"I stayed at this hotel a couple of weeks ago and would not hesitate to recommend it. We booked a lake-view room. Initially we were allocated a room on the 1st floor, which as the review below says, does not give the best view, but we were moved up a floor on request. The room was clean, large, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The public areas were spacious and airy. The food was on the good side of average and was served by attentive waiters. The lawn and gardens were very tidy. The town is less than 5 minutes' walk away.
I believe the hotel is family-run, if not family-owned. The manager was friendly, helpful and amusing without being over familiar. When the pool was being cleaned, he arranged for us to use the neighbouring hotel's pool. When we left, we were travelling by train, and he offered the services of the hotel's porter to carry our bags the 5-minute walk to the station!
If you're considering this one, go for it!"

"Very clean comfortable and friendly hotel in a great location - convenient for shops, the ferry boats (for the islands) and just across the road from the lake.
We had an economy room booked through a budget searching web-site and got the room for the Easter weekend for about EUR 100 a night and we had a view albeit a view sideways out to the lake. The hotel had a jacuzzi pool near the roof terrace and the views from there were superb.
The TV was a bit on the tiny side but we didn't go there to watch TV!
Shops were not far away and many restaurants with great food too. There was quite a buzz in one of the main squares which linked up the cobbled streets. The town itself was rather smart too.
I would highly recommend the restaurant 'La Botte' - amazing food for great value, but get there early as you can't always guarantee to get the time you booked beforehand!"

The view of lake Maggiore is breathtaking, the room was nice and comfortable and the continental buffet breakfast was abundant and of good quality.
I will certainly recommend this hotel to others, and I would book it again if coming in this area in the future."

"We stayed at The Astoria for 11 days end June/beg July. Hotel is excellently located, close to town, ferry terminal, cable car etc. We had a front room with a great view, our room was on the 1st floor. However I think better views would be from higher floors as the 1st floor rooms are directly above the restaurant roof which restricts the view a little. Staff were welcoming, polite and nothing was too much trouble Good choices at mealtimes, restaurant was air con which was great as the temperature during our stay was in the hgh 80s and very humid. Take some mosquito repellant as although I have never been bitten before, I had a lot of bites during our stay. The rooms are very clean, although some can be a little on the small side. Great pool area. Do try the wine bar in the 1st turning on the right walking into the old town - very friendly staff and great choice of wine at very reasonable prices. All in all a very good quality hotel and good value for money."
