I fell in love with Varenna and the Hotel du Lac
"I spent four nights at Hotel du Lac with a friend. We were give the Oleander Room with twin beds, a suite really. The room is U-shaped with the beds on one side, a sitting area on the other side, a desk at the bottom, and a good-sized bathroom in the center. Our private terrace overlooking the lake was huge. The linens and duvet are luxurious--so much so that I didn't mind the rain one morning as it was a good excuse to linger in bed. Breakfast was the best we experienced during our trip staying at six hotels. The proprietor was extremely helpful and seemed to enjoy assisting the guests. Would I stay here again? You bet I would!"

A very romantic engagement
"We stayed at the Hotel du Lac in May and got engaged on the balcony of our room which was breathtaking in the evening sun looking over the lake towards Bellagio. The hotel is lovely, but it is the views that make this such a wonderful place. We will definitely go back."

Hotel du Lac is a joy
"The hotel is right on the lake and is situated just around a curve on the coast so that you still get fabulous views but no noise from restaurants or bars. In about a minute you are on the promenade on the lake or at the square. We had a room on the third floor with a small balcony and an incredible view. The hotel is spotless--recently remodeled. Breakfast on the deck is unbeatable. The linens are gorgeous. We will return to exaclty the same place. We were only there three days, but next time we will spend at least a week. We stayed at the end of May, 2006."

"Anyone who has ambitions to run a successful hotel should study the methods of Hotel du Lac owner, Ilena. The ambience, furnishings, cleanliness, comfort - all of the highest possible standard, and the staff (a complete team unchanged since commencement five years ago) were warm, friendly and highly efficient. We stayed for nine nights in a splendid 2nd floor room. It was marvellous - great views too."

"I have just returned from a long weekend in Bellagio staying at the Hotel Du Lac. This is a lovely hotel in a prime location overlooking the Lake. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are very helpful. This hotel is great value for money and I would certainly return."

"Hotel du Lac proves the rule that owner-run establishments win hands down. This hotel may appear unexceptional from the outside but inside every detail has been carefully attended to, the rooms are airy and comfortable, the staff friendly and helpful, the views across the lake spectacular and breakfasts, in the dining room or on the terrace are superb. The sound of water lapping at the walls of the hotel lulls you to sleep and, being on the East shore, the hotel is bathed in sun long after it has left the western shore. Geographically situated at the centre of Lake Como makes Varenna a wondrful base to see all the sights; it also happens to be one of the most beautiful of all the little lakeside towns and villages. On the downside you need to be a skillful driver to negociate the upper level of the du Lac car park, though the lower level is no problem - best advice is to take a small car. Restaurants get very booked up. Probably wise to email or ring the hotel in advance and ask them to make reservations for you."

"We stayed for three nights in Hotel du Lac this September. The hotel is perfectly placed within Lake Como. We much prefered this location than Bellagio. We had one of the larger rooms with the large balcony, room 11. The room was a reasonable size however the bathroom was tiny as was the shower. This is nothing unusual in Italy though. The room was quiet and we slept with the doors and windows wide open. The staff were helpful with restaurant bookings and generally very pleasant, you are right previous reviewer the chap in the breakfast area could crack a smile every now and then! We would highly recommend this hotel and would certainly stay here again, should we be so lucky as to return to Varenna."

What a view!
"We stayed in a room with a large balcony for 3 nights. When we entered the room and steped out on the balcony it took our breath away. The view was just lovely. The room was furnished simply but quite comfortable. Large bed. We kept the window and patio door open all night and got a wonderful breeze and it was very quiet! I would recommend this hotel to all. I can't find any fault with it at all."

"At a friend's advice, we booked one of the larger rooms with a huge private terrace overlooking Lake Como toward Bellagio. Because the hotel is on the edge of town, the rooms are very quiet and the view from the terrace is completely tranquil. The room was simple but nicely furnished with a small bathroom. The terrace (approximately 10 feet by 12 feet) was flanked by star jasmine and we enjoyed reading and soaking up the spectacular views while sitting in comfortable wooden sling chairs. The staff was lovely. Breakfasts, a large continental spread plus one or two hot entrees, were included and could be enjoyed on a lovely terrace or indoors at linen-covered tables."

Fabulous Place but don't mess with the staff!!
"Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places I have been, and Varenna is a charming place. Hotel du lac is a perfectly good hotel, pleasing on the eye with a fantastic location on the water. It also has air-con which is crucial and breakfast was rather tasty, especially sat outside on the balcony overlooking the lake. But there is a but. Service. It is such a shame that a hotel can undo all the hard work of its setting when the staff act as though staying there is a privilige for us. The head receptionist/manager gave a most excellent female Basil-Fawty like impression of frostiness and her side-kick was more than happy to give us a good verbal kickiing when we questioned why we should pay 70 euros for calling off a taxi to the airport which we cancelled 2 hours in advance. Erm no we wont be paying. What ferry do you think we arrived on bella? Hotel du lac is lovely but they really need to work on their service. The guy that serves breakfast also needs to look less like he is serving time. Smile man!!!"
