Amsterdam is a city of contrasts. This architecturally beautiful city is full of culture, but also with its red light district and numerous cannabis cafés, it has a reputation as a city of hedonism. When it comes to city breaks, holidays in Amsterdam are hard to beat. Built on land that has been reclaimed from the sea, Amsterdam is full of windmills, canals, dams and dykes. Visitors come from all over the world to the Dutch capital, and no matter what people want out of their package holidays in Amsterdam, the city rarely disappoints.

The first thing visitors arriving in Amsterdam notice is just how pretty the city is. Amsterdam is full of listed and historical buildings, many of which line the canals, making a stroll around the waterways a delight. Home to Rembrandt and Van Gogh, Amsterdam is full of fine art galleries and museums, where you’ll find works by the eponymous artists and many other masters. For those newly arrived in the city, the best place to start holidays in Amsterdam is the Dam square. From here, you can find the Royal Palace and the main shopping streets that lead to the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein quarters where you’ll find huge crowds of tourists watching the street performers or waiting in line outside the theatres. This is also the place to sit outside one of the many bars and enjoy the atmosphere while you eat or drink.

Perhaps the best way to explore the city is on a canal boat tour, but Amsterdam is also the most cycle friendly city in the world and bikes are easy to hire. Of course, many of the people arriving in Amsterdam on package holiday deals are attracted by the cannabis cafés and many nightclubs and bars. You’ll also find many curious tourists strolling around the Red Light District bewildered by the Dutch liberal attitude to the adult industry.
