1 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
Afitis Hotel - Simply the most beautiful hotel we've been to
In twenty five years of travelling, this is the loveliest hotel we have ever stayed in - and we have stayed in a few!! Before writing this review, I checked other reviews, good and not so good, to see if there is anything other people have said which we might have missed. We cannot subscribe to any of the less favourable comments we found. In addition to that, we talked with other guests there and everyone felt the same - it's not just us - the place is a jewel. Plenty of other reviews say the same. We can't all be wrong!
On the Kassandra leg of Halkidiki, about 40 mile from Thessoloniki. About 100 feet below the village of Afitos, on the beach. As you climb the path and steps up to the village, the view gets even better, if that were possible. Coaches cannot get down there so the travel firms use taxis instead - a real bonus! 40 minute run, mostly dual carriageway from the airport.
This is truly a beautiful "boutique" hotel - inside and out. The photos on the hotel's website are no exageration, it really is like that. The sitting and relaxation areas inside the hotel are exquisite. There are so many little spots you can choose from.
Also, there is a gentle perfumed atmosphere inside the hotel which is really very nice. Probably scented candles, and very effective.
The photos say it all. The whole of the grounds are very tastefully landscaped to fit in with the sea and mountains in the background.
In the evening, candles and lanterns would twinkle around the place to give a magic romantic atmosphere. Absolutely delightful. They even arranged for a red full moon rising up over the sea! Don't know how they did that.
Always gentle "Cafe de Mar" type music in the background from high quality sound equipment - never too loud and always right for the time of day. Nice touch.
We have rarely been made so welcome. Lovely people, from the owners to the restaurant staff - they just couldn't do enough to make our stay wonderful.
What I would like to say is how discrete it all was. In the evening, they would light candles and lanterns everywhere but I rarely saw them do it. They would glide around in the background - very professional. The maître d'hôtel was just about the best we've encountered - a lovely polite man - there is nothing he wouldn't do to help.
Everything in this hotel is designed to give you a good feeling. No matter where you sit, the view is lovely and the surroundings lovely.
We were on half-board and we are realistic. We expected the standard Greek buffet. We were wrong. The food was just amazing, the selection very wide, fresh baked bread, all local fresh ingedients, incredible variety and all cooked to perfection - there's even a barbeque-grill choice each evening as well. There is also an à la Carte restaurant at one end, next to the sea, but the food was so good we saw no need to go there. I imagine the menu would be truly fantastic. We haven't had half-board food anywhere as good as this.
POOLS and SUNBEDS
The hotel discretely ensure that there is no towel-bagging by guests. A beach and pool attendant is on hand to make sure. However, there are so many beds and umbrellas, there would never be the need to "grab" a bed before breakfast. When there was a day that had quite a few guests, they simply put out more beds and brollies. This is the first time we've been to breakfast in a beach hotel and not seen beds with towels on them.
Small, exclusive, meticulously cleaned each morning and the waters clear as crystal. Some rocks, but that made it excellent for snorkelling. They even put sandags and railings into the sea to help people into the water. How thoughtful! Haven't seen that before.
The best we've ever seen. Always changing the beds and towels
This is the euro zone and we are from the UK so everything was expensive. Less than at the village though. A large beer would cost 4 euros, Ouzo 3.20 and half a bottle of excellent wine 12 euros. Massive club sandwich (highly recomended - 7 euros). Prices a lot less than we experienced in Skiathos last year. Everything else - free!
We strongly recomend you go half board because eating up in the village was very pricey indeed.
This is not a high-activity, exploring or adventure location. There are no major sites or towns nearby. It's just the most relaxing place you could possibly imagine. We didn't go anywhere, we normally do, but this hotel was almost to beautiful to leave! As for the organised trips, we just had no motive to get involved.
If you want to, you can climb up to the village and get a taxi to other beaches or walk to the main road (15 minutes) and catch the bus (every 40 minutes or so). Apparently the fare between the beaches is between 2.50 euros and 5 euros.
We highly recomend the neck, back and shoulders massage from the qualified physyican on-site. Our backs have never felt better - half an hour cost £30 - all pressure points and manipulation. Excellent value. Cheaper than the UK and very thorough indeed! It added so much to our enjoyment to have our aches and pains sorted out.
Too many to list but the attention to detail is what comes across. A computer in the corner of reception without cost or restrictions for people to keep in touch and read their emails. First class air conditioning in the room with remote control - and free! TV channels very clear, including CNN. The place is so spotless, you feel bad about walking in with wet feet or putting your glass down on a surface.
If you sit by the little bridge between the pools, watch out for a delightful little character we called Stanley the Stoat who lives under the boards. Either a stoat or a ferret, not sure which, but a gorgeous little creature. Appears when not many people moving about.
Watch out for the doughnut man on the beach. He forces you to buy these large delicious succulent chocolate-filled doughnuts the size of teaplates at 2.50 euros. Torture! Seriously though, my wife and I wanted to be balanced with this review but we both agree, there are just no downsides that we can think of. We have a personal rule that we never go back to the same place twice. With the Afitis hotel, we intend to break that rule and so we will return."
