112 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"You Must be thinking why? Well o.k. yes they do take your passports, yes no food or drink aloud when using the pool unless purchased from the pool's snack bar, 30 euro to bring someone back for overnight stay, 50 eu for a week of aircon, 20 euro for a safe and yes they will charge you if you break anything. I don't know what kind of hotels these people have stayed in when they complain about having to pay for an extra person in the room or not wanting to pay for damages, even after seeing the damage price list in their rooms. I stayed in florida once and the hotel charges 250 USd for a lost safe key, and don't think the hotels there will let you off if you trash your room you will be arrested and have to pay court costs and damages. We paid 10 pounds pp per night to stay here and didn't expect to get the extras for free, so unless you pay extra for air-con when you book don't expect to get the rest thrown in. This hotel is great for the price and location, management'John and Pete' are friendly unless you are rude to them they're o.k., they were nothing like the reviews. The week I stayed at the Mariana there were idiots who didn't respect the hotel nor their rooms and quite understandably had confrontations with the management. Clearly a lot of the bad reviews do sooner or later include some damage they had been charged for just to top it off, making people believe the reason for the bad review was for the quality and service and not their empty pockets. The location is great about 3 min walk to the main strip and 15 min to the beach, so it's quiet enough but close enough, just see google maps (only 1km from beach). The pool was great and the meals at the snack bar were great, cocktails were fab only 3 eu , our apartments were nice and cleaned every other day. Overall a great holiday at an affordable price and I hope to be back for 2013 with my girl friend."

''ALL IN ALL GOOD HOTEL''
"I was a bit hesitant about this hotel after reading the reviews in particular regarding management and all this stuff about damages, We decided we were going to be carefull when we came back after a heavy night of drinking. When we arrived we were a bit disappointed that we did not have adjacent rooms close to our friends, after complainig to john the Manager they were moved next morning beside us, so fair play for acting quickly. The rooms were cleaned almost daily and sheets changed twice, even though the rep did tell us sheets are changed mid week, but the cleaners do change them if they get diry. We discovered early on if you respect the place as if it were your own and were nice to john and pete you you'll be o.k., as i did see some people given discounts for damages because they were big spenders at the bar and got to know the staff. The hotel itsel was clean and tidy as some of the blocks had only recently been built and the landscaping was still been worked on. The hotel pool does get lively during the day with the lads playing polo games and snack bar is busy all day with alcohol and food. Just a word of warning make sure you get a safe as greece is going through a recession and there are more people stealing than ever before and keep away from the gypsy kids down on the strip as they will pick your pockets. Overall we had a good holiday with no bad experiences and i am sure if we did we would be now writing a bad review. "

''PERFECT AND NO DAMAGES''
"Stayed at the Mariana in september 2012 and can't wait to come back next year. It really is no way like the bad reviews make out! as most were written by people who were charged for damages and want pay back. The Hotel itself was really clean and tidy, the staff were o.k especially the crazy cleaner Angelika. The pool was nice with loads of sun beds to our suprise as some reviews described it as small. The bar food was really nice as they have an experienced cook 'Diana' who also speaks really good english and prepares the food exactly how you want it.Drinks at the pool bar were between 3 and 5 eu and strong hence you get what you pay for. Our room was nice as it was in the new block, we found out later from our rep the new blocks were reserved for girls as they hardly break anything. The hotel is about 10 min to the beach and 5 min to the centre of laganas so it's not that far if you'r coming back drunk. The bars and clubs down the strip are amazing and there are lots of them offering specials on driks allthough after 11pm they all charge 5 euroes. Overall the holiday was funtastic and the hotel was perfect for us girls and would recomend it to anyone. "

"As it was our first girls holiday and after reading the reviews we were all a bit put off, as the reviews are pretty mixed just thought id write exactly how it is. We arrived at 6am to the mariana and waited at reception to be told the rules, damage lists and we needed to give our passports but we could collect them the following day. we was then shown our room by our rep, which to be honest we was all really tired and he was hounding us for money so we told him we will just find him tomorrow once we had all decided which events we wanted to do. He wasnt happy about it and told us they would all be sold out by the morning but we took our chances and went straight to bed. The room is really clean, really basic but all in all not too bad for what we paid. The next day we went by the pool and had our water (which we had bought from THERE store which is on THERE campus) took by a woman who gave it to the plants. We then went to find the reps and booked the booze cruis and the UV paint party. The UV paint party was good but the 'free bar' was just watered down drinks and the party ended pretty early around 12 oclock. The booze cruise was a waste of money we couldnt even hear the music, so if you just go the the strip youll be able to find a much better one, and just go to the other parties like the 'white party' its a lot cheaper. The following 2 days the maids had not been in and becuase its self catering you will have lots of rubbish, like empty food packets water bottles etc and the bin really needed emptying becuase it will attract flies, that was abit annoying. also the sheets should get changed everyday (well they in most hotels) but in the week we stayed there they got changed once). On the sunday...bacuse no maid had been we had also ran out of toilet roll, so we went to the bar to ask for some. He explained he could not give us toilet roll because it was sunday.... which is really discusting. So I suggest you bring a spare toilet roll just incase you run out on a sunday. Dont buy food from the pool bar its really expensice I paid 4.40 euro for a cheese toastie which was literally 1 piece of toaste it was that small and some crusty cheese. The Slush puppies are really nice though! :) On the last day we decieded to keep our room on until midnight becuase our flight wasnt until the following day which was good value, there was 5 of us and we had 2 rooms, 1 room of 2 and 1 room of 3 so we kept on the bigger room and it was 40 euros then 16 for the 2 girls. so it was 56 then that divided by the 5 of us was just over 11 euros each which we thought was good. He went to inspect our rooms which we wasnt worried about because we haddnt broken anything. once he came back he handed us cctv snap shots of some guys who we had spoken to one night because they were our new neighbours and was asking who they were, once we explained they weree staying in there hotel they was fine, but the owners literally try and find anything to charge you for. We got a cleaning fine for 40euros but we didnt mind paying becuase it was our fault, my friend slipped with a carton of eggs and it went all over next doors balcony. But I would 100% suggest going down to the beach at the end of the strip and renting out a speed boat for the day its amazing! "

Not bad at all!
"just came back from a week in mariana apartments I went with 3 other girls,... We had read the reviews befor are holiday and was absolutely ******* are selfs, we arrived about 6am and the owner John met us at reception like all the other reviews say yes he takes passports and yes he gives you a 5 minute lecture on hotel rules, damages fines and so on.. Luckily for us we were in the new apartments! Which were 10x better than what we thought, we had a quick check over the room to see if everything was there' missing or Brocken just like John asks you to, we had no problems' we had been in the room no longer than 5 mins when the rep starts knocking on the door, once again nothing we didnt except because of the reviews, after 45 minutes of her waffling on about how good the events were we said no just fo the fact we heardbthe wernt worth the money and aslo cos it was all a cheap holiday for us and hadnt took much spending money. She was fine with it. We spent everyday around the pool, and met some great people there' we had breakfast at the bar every morning which want a bad price 4 euros for English brekki, however the drinks where a bit expensive at 2.50 a can.. The onsite supermarket is a bit expensive but just take your beach bags out with u and stock up from the supermarkets on the strips especially water as its so much cheaper, we never got caught! On the third night 2 of us got caught takin our mattresses out on the balcony' John caught us stormed in told us to pack are stuff and he would move us to a different part of the hotel it had a bed and a shower so we could hardly complain⦠a glass also got Broken, we went down to the bar and told the smaller guy Pete, who is lovely and is not at all mean, he couldn't believe it when we sed it was only a glass, we would have to pay 5 euros for it but he sed give him 4 and he'll give us a glass off the bar, which was kind :)... Johns ignorant and will only speak when it suits him , keep him on the good side and you be fine, rooms got clean 3 times a week. On check out we were a bit nervous even though we new there was nothing to fine us for, one of the sheets had henor tattoo printed on it which John asked if we had any and we said it wasn't us which we got away with, the other room was fine we had no fines and passports were given back :) we all had a fantastic holiday. You respect the hotel they will respect you, not even half as bad as we thought it would be, and would even consider goin back if we ever when to Zante again :)"

"We stayed here in august and had an amazing time although it was a bit noisy but that's what you get 18-30's.all the bad reviews you read are from groups of young ones who are out to party on their fist holiday, that's fine but they spoils it for the rest of us.Whilst we were there there was a colored guy who had too much to drink and started smashing bottles and fighting with somen welsh guys.John the manager had to call the police and when they arrived he ran off to his room.Thinking that the police were knocking on his door when actually it was his friends he decided to jump off the balcony as if he were SUPERMAN and could fly.At the same time john was shouting at him to come down, which he did hitting a large umbrella on the way down and breaking it and also breaking his arm when he hit the floor This only meant one thing....60 euros fine to pay for the umbrella.Which he didn't have Pete at the bar felt sorry for him and paid some of it out of his tips and set up a fund for him at the bar. When he came back from the hospital the next day all bandaged up everyone was trying not to laugh at him every time anyone looked at him all they got was "what are you ....... looking at.LOOSER This was all on our first day.i could go on and on...... Dont Stay Here, Owners & Reps are Terrible!!!!!!!!!!
"First of all the location of the hotel is terrible itâs at the top of the strip and takes about 15 minutes to get to the main strip but about a half hour walk down to the beach and thatâs not when your pissed up either!! We arrived at Marianas at 6oclock in the morning to be lectured by the hotel owners about our weeks stay there. They wanted 50 euros for aircon & 30 euros for a safe box which was in the hotel reception not in the rooms. Luckily for us we were a group of 7 and were in the new buildings across the road from the main hotel. The rooms were clean, tidy and big. There was nothing wrong with the rooms at all, they got cleaned three times a week and the bins got emptied every day. Finally we arrived at our rooms, the 18-30 rep desisded to go through the weekâs events with us at half six in the morning which in all honestly took the **** as no one was interested in them but then we had to put up with the idiot for about 45minutes, hassling us to try and buy into the events. All we really wanted to do was the booze cruise the cost of it by its self was 55 euros!!! For the whole week it was 235 euros which we did not pay as I couldnât think of anything worse to do for the whole week. As we decided not to do the events the reps completely ignored us and never spoke for the whole week for some reason but we believe it was because we didnât book anything. After the eventful morning, we went around the pool which wasnât to crowded, nice size pool with a volley ball net in the middle of it which is pointless as no one really plays and when they do people got moaned at for throwing the balls too far. The prices around the pool are so expensive for a can of Fanta/coke was 2.50 euros even when some of them had a 75p price on the tins, crisps were 2 euros, food was reasonable priced but everything was small portions. Copperburg was 5 euros a tin!!!! Sorry but that is literally ridiculous. We went down the strip that night for dinner, Pythari is amazing. Great food, cheap and the owners are lovely. We ate there most morning as well as the breakfast was a great hangover cure and free Wi-Fi!! We went to get pre drinks before we went out there was a great supermarket on the corner opposite the go carting which was so cheap for drink. Party wine is lethal but cheap and gets you steaming after half a bottle, we bought loads of drink and made our way back to the hotel. We thought if we tried hiding the bottles before we went in, in case we got stopped which shock we did. The owner started shouting âgirls girls come back here now" one of our friends ran off with her drink and the rest of us went back to see the owner. He looked in our bags and took one of the bottles off of my friends who had it in her hand. He told us we wasnât aloud to alcohol from outside the hotel and we had to buy it from there shop which was opposite the hotel and was very pricey. After a half hour argument with the man he let them have the drink back if they took it back to the shop which they did and had to buy more drink from the shop they owned. The worse thing of all is when we were waiting for our flight which was at 6 in the morning to keep the room on was 40 euros and a extra 8 euros for people to use the room! **** take three of us didnt get a room as we wasnt paying to have a shower and we also had to leave our luggage in reception all day but in fairness it was with a load more cases which was safe. try get your passports back as soon as they check your rooms otherwise they keep them if you have to pay for something in your room which was broken which luckily was nothing in our room but in our friends room there was a broken chair and they tried charging them for it which they refused to pay as they didnt break it and they managed to get their passports back a couple of minutes before they left for the coach to the airport To basically sum up the whole experience dont stay at this hotel as you will be ripped off and treated like your in school again and as for the reps, dont be fooled by them as all they want is your money."

Just don't be a div! Best holiday EVER!
"Stayed here 23rd - 30th July 2012. It's only a 5/10 minute walk to the start of the strip - the distance is great for sleeping and you don't notice the walk cause you should be drunk on your way back! You're probably reading this because everyone goes on about being charged for rubbish. Zante hosts a neon party and a strip flogging henna tattoos which are appealing when you're hammered. These things don't wash out of sheets. These guys run a hotel and are business men. We read the reviews and figured out for ourselves that if we gave them no reason to charge us, then they wouldn't, and voila we had the best week ever. I'm going back in 4 weeks. Our rooms were cleaned about 3 times in the week but we kept it tidy so they would probably have come in more often if they thought it needed doing ha. We made conversation, and we took a flat sheet so we didn't mark theirs. They don't take the mick as much as people make out. Some guy fell in the pool, but because he was a nice guy and it was an accident, he did NOT pay a 50 euro fine (it was out of hours). John actually said to me "I prefer mature youngsters" which is a given when you get screamy immature idiots asking for trouble. Yes you pay 30 euro for taking other people back, but other hotels charge you too. It's 40 euro to keep your room til midnight on the last night and 50 euro for air con for the week, but it's only a fraction more than what you'd pay at any other hotel, I've been in Laganos apartments, Ellenis, Vivien and Savvas and Mariana bet the lot in my opinion. Just DON'T BE A DIV! Lastly, don't buy in to any 18-30's trips, you can get ALL of it on the strip except the school disco. Trinity Scott Mills, paint party (do!) booze cruises (don't do!), Karnage, Silent Disco.... at a fraction (eg Trinity is 55 with them, 15 from the boat sales places). "

AWFUL HOTEL, DO NOT STAY HERE! AVOID AT ALL COSTS
"Myself and 6 other girls aged 19-20 arrived at the Mariana Apart-hotel at 7am 20/07/12 after a long night flight, all we wanted to do was put our heads down for some rest before a day of sunbathing. Before we even had chance to do this we had to endure a long-winded lecture from one of the Australian hotel managers, this is where he informed us of the extortionate breakage fee's they gave to any small damages caused whilst staying in the hotel. We then all had to hand over our passports as a deposit and was told we would be given all bar one persons per rooms passport back the next day (this didnt happen). Once this had been completed we were then shown to our rooms by the 18-30 rep, the rooms were nice, big, clean, modern again we then had to endure another long talk about the 18-30's ridiculously over priced events package they were trying to sell to us, lying to us saying that ALL drinks on the strip cost no less than 5euro and the 18-30's group will get them deals, free entry to clubs etc. It free to get into any club regardless and drinks on the strip are 2 cocktails and 2 shots for 5euros. Stupidly buying their con deal last year in Malia i realized it was a massive rip-off so instantly told them this year we didn't want to do it. The rep became very abrupt and then didn't speak to us throughout the rest of our time in Zante. They also try to con you into their 'Reunion' again another rip off so DO NOT LISTEN TO THE REPS- CONS. You can get the exact same events on the strip for half the price. During our stay in Zante we highered out two speed boats on different days which were amazing and definitely worth the money between us it worked out at 13euro each for 2 hours and is cheaper for the less people you have. We also we to the White Party, absolutely amazing best night of the holiday 35euros but worth every penny, you can book this from the excursion shops on the strip, Jaguar Skills was there when we went and he was just incredible. The next day we all went to a cheap supermarket on the strip to purchase alcohol for pre-drinks before heading out to laganas strip. When walking back to our room the hotel manager stop us and demanded to search our bags, he found that we had alcohol in our beach bags he went crazy and told us we were disrespectful for bringing outside-purchased alcohol into the hotel and tried to confiscate our vodka. Being SELF CATERING this should determine the right for us to bring anything we wish back to the hotel room. He demanded that we purchased any alcohol from the on site super market only, this charging again ridiculous prices. We managed to fight our case and get our bottle of vodka back off him but had to return it back to the shop we brought it from. On our last night we were told we had to check-out of our room at 12noon thursday 26th even though we had paid for 7 NIGHTS and our flight wasn't until friday 27th 5.55am, we were fuming but didnt mention as everyone else in our hotel who was on our flight had also be thrown out of there rooms, we were made to wait in the reception until our coach arrived. You were able to keep a room on for 12 hours costing 40euros + 8 euro for any extra people wanting to use the room, even if they just wanted to keep their suitcase in there. 4 of the girls want to keep a room on where as my self and 2 others just left our cases in the reception. Once checking out of our rooms the hotel manager completed an inspection on our rooms for any breakages. My self and my friend shared a room and keep it spotless insuring we didn't break a thing, we inspected everything in our room as soon as we go there and everything was fine. Once the manager had returned from the 'inspection' he acussed myself and my friend from breaking a chair, which we 100 percent didn't do, we refused to pay the fee and demanded to see the broken chair which they would let us see. It was all very coincidental considering we didnt take out air-con for that room or pay the extra to keep the room on for a further 12 hours. The manager refused to give over our passports, there for my self and my friend started to argue with him. We spoke to another group of lads in the hotel who were also having accusations for damages they didnt cause and were given a fine of 500euros for waving in front on the CCTV camera, they refused to pay, the manager became very angry lost his temper and throw the lads passports across the bar kitchen, one of them landing in a deep fat fryer absolutely destroying his passport!!! As I carried on to argue with the manager he became very violent and squared up to me threatening to hit me, call the police and not allow us to get onto the coach. By the time it reached 3am when our coach transfers arrived he still had refused to hand over our passports giving us loads of abuse. I informed him i would be writing a review about the disgusting level of service he has provided throughout the week, how his attitude was manipulating and sarcastic, he again squared up to me pointing his finger in my face. He finally handed over our passports after a really kind lad threw the money at him telling him to give our passports back and to stop being a w****r to young girls. He threw the passports at us and headed for the coaches telling the coach drivers we weren't allowed on the coach until we apoligised to him, luckily the coach driver was on our side and told him basically to jog on and let us on the coach. Overall i DO NOT EVER RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL. Us girls went on the knowledge of all the bad reviews but just went with the assumption that people only ever write a bad review, honestly they are all true and so many people faced fines whilst we was there. The two Australian managers really are awful and the 18-30's reps are no help at all, they will not help you which any situation. A group of Liverpool girls had everything taken from there room of value and cash there was no force entry and the manger wouldn't let them see the CCTV and said they could only see it if they gave him 50euros, him knowing they have no money. So we all knew it was obvious that he broke into their room. The hotel owners are literally massive helments and i would never advise to stay here."

âAUSTRALIAN OWNERS WHO ARE NOTHING BUT CONMEN ! STAY AWAYâ
"If you have booked these studios please stay away. These australian owners are nothing but conmen ripping and money laundering off young people on holiday. I have just spoken to this disgusting owner on my sons mobile phone after at first he refused. They fine every single person who stays here and are on a right old racket. they keep hold of passports illegally and then threaten police if fines are not paid. Fines include another person having a shower in your room 8 euros, drop a glass 5 euros,a female staying over 30 euros, missing spoon fork knife 5 euros. They confiscate all alcohol from the rooms, and its self catering, they make you pay for towels, they charge over the odds for air con (con being the appropriate word). They charge for use of fridge. They advertise on ladsholidays.com and for 18-30 holidays so they know what they are in for and they know that they can make thousands a week ripping people off. They have more rules than a borstal prison, they charge 5 euros for a drink and 5 euros for a burger. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CHANGE YOUR HOTEL AND STAY AWAY YOU WILL REGRET STAYING HERE. "

Look elsewhere first, but as a last resort, its fine, as long as you're respectful.
"The hotel and its facilities are fine, nice, clean rooms, big, clean pool with plenty of sunbeds. The only problem are the owners and their attitudes. From the off they're hostile and intimidating, John (one of the owners) reminds you of a primary school bully, only looking to scam you and take your money. You attempt to be friendly by making conversation, but it's pointless. The rules are strict and annoying, e.g. a â¬30 fine for bringing guests back, and up to â¬500 fines for room damage. The cleaners are also extremely annoying, letting themselves in at 12 am every morning, shouting in greek, but they do make the beds nice and provide toilet paper etc. But, there are many pluses of this hotel. They don't care about loud music, as everyone there are in zante for the same reason. We blasted loud music for an hour or two before going out, and were never told to stop or never received a fine. We completely ignored the reps our entire stay, as they charged loads of money for events that clearly weren't as good as they sound. When you arrive, the reps will try to act like your best friend, making you feel special, but you know its all a con to make money. We felt we were far better off following our noses every night, going from bar to bar getting amazingly cheap deals on drinks. Bottom line, if you're respectful and don't do anything stupid, and are aware of the fines, you'll be fine. I advise you have as little to do with the reps as possible, as the clubs/bars in zante are amazing, and you don't need to pay extra for a stupid event/theme to have a good time. Also, we were in a group of 13, with 9 of us at this hotel, 3 at another, and 1 at a third so we did get to see other hotels, which were a lot nicer. So the mariana's a nice hotel, but there are many other hotels which have similar facilities, but have a nicer location, and less rules/ridiculous charges, for the same price. Look elsewhere first, but as a last resort, the mariana's fine, as long as you're respectful to the owners."

The reviews are true.
"As we arrived at 6am in the morning, waiting in the reception for a lecture off the owners was the last thing we wanted. After the lecture we was made to wait another 20 mins while everyone had to sign contracts agreeing to their rediculous rules, until we finally got our one room key (10 euro charge if you want an extra key!). The pool is quite small and the pool bar is over priced, selling cans of drink for 2euro when it clearly has 50 cent original price printed on it. After a few days we started spending our daytimes around another hotel pool close by (pythari hotel) which was so much nicer, friendly atmosphere and cheaper food/drink. The beach is quite far to walk, but we hired a quad for the week so only took a few mins to get there. Our flight was 3am in the morning and we got thrown out our rooms at midday, 13 hours before we left! Instead of paying the ridiculous price for an extra night there, we paid 30 euro for a night at the other hotel (pythari). As we were leaving, we made sure our room was pristine clean (probably cleaner than when we arrived!) to make sure we got no charges. However, the arrogant **** hotel owner still found something to charge us on. Apparently there was stains on the sheets that he claimed to be off henna tattoo, even though we never had henna tattoos!!! I asked to see the 'stain' and It was merely dust off the floor, and he then made me wash it in the sink with shampoo(?!) and now have a massive blister on my finger! He still wasn't happy and said he would wash it for 6 euro and the mark was still there after the wash (which wasnt even with hot water) so we just agreed to pay the 20 euro as he wasn't going to give our passports back! All of the reviews are true and I would not recommend anyone to stay here unless you have money to waste on stupid fines. There are much nicer, friendlier hotels for decent prices!! "
