"Wow first time in Kalamaki and the Marelen and just loved it 2 weeks went far to quickly. The room was clean and tidy but bathroom could do with an update just to freshen it up, fridge in the room was a great bonus, maid service was excellent as were all the staff. The breakfast was a typical full English or continental depending on your preference, also every friday was a free pizza and entertainment for all, air con has a charge as was the safety deposit box. We have met so many people who have been coming to the Marelen for years because it is so good, the location is also very good with the beach 2 mins away and the main strip 5 mins for all the bars and eating places, yes we will be back next year Paul and wen."

Big rooms poor pool
"We stayed at the Marelen Sept 2010 2 adults and 3 children. The apt was lovely and spacious, 2 bedrooms,1 double and 1 with twin beds and bunks and a large balcony. The maids came in most days but didnt actually do much our bathroom walls were FILTHY!!! Oh and toilet paper in a bin... didnt like that. I think we had an older style bathroom but thats no excuse for the grime, I wiped the tiles using wet wipes which were BLACK!
Its situated near to the beach which if you walk to the right you can soon find yourself in the next resort which is very lively and you can also hire a boat from there at a very reasonable price(highly recommended). Walk to the left about 100m and over the sand dunes theres a lovely snack bar run by an English lady and a Greek man, food superb drinks and ice cream a fraction of the price of the beach bar so if you are a family well worth finding.
Entertainment in the hotel is very English if you like that sort of thing? Snacks by the pool were good and reasonably priced.
Do be aware that the airport is very near and LOUD but this was quite a novelty for us as weve never seen planes so close.
THE POOL!!! My son and lots of other children had a very bad ear infections during our stay (hes 13 and was crying with the pain)the tiles were dirty below the water, the showers didnt work every day, we never saw the pool maintained though out our 10 day stay.(Usually pool areas are hosed down and water maintained each night when its closed). We complained about the state of the water, nothing was done nor did any of the staff or rep get back to us regarding this issue. Wont be going back, the whole area was too commercialized for us and not quaint enough.

hotel merelen - the truth
"Not being one for writing reviews but having read comments on this and other sites i thought i should give a honest opinion, the marelen hotel is a lovely family run hotel, spotlesssly clean in a great area of kalamaki,we found the staff to be polite and very friendly, breakfast was reasonable with a decent choice, and entertainment on a night was limited but very friendly, the restaurants on the main strip are quite diverse, but without a doubt heavens kitchen stands head and shoulders above the rest with the olive tree well worth a mention, only poot meal we had was from a greek restaurant zakanoh and is best avoided,as the area is close to the airport there is low flying aircraft but this is more of a facination than a annoyance, back to the marelen, cover charges exist for air conditioning 40 euros per week, safe deposit and fridge 25 euros each per week but if you are aware of these charges you can budget for them, air conditioning is esential on a night or your likely to roast... "HOTEL MARELEN, ONE WORD- AMAZING!
the staff were absolutely amazing. vissi the gardener, beautiful man on the outside as well as the inside. very chatty and he only smokes once every two years, seeing as his last was 6months ago he should be very hardworking for another 18months! his work is absolutely divine, he trims bushes absolutely amazingly, lovely designs, although his heart does lie with teaching.
nick the barman, not so lovely although he has a great taste in music! also rihannon head of entertainment, she has gorgeous taste in clothes, and she is absolutelyl beautiful. boy does she know how to entertain and have a good time!! saw her out at fire bar one time, she was looking so cool, partying on into the early hours!
rooms were lovely and clean, and the pool was gorgeous, very large and many beds. and the perfect temperature as well! zakinthos is b-e-a-utiful! the beach is gorgeous, and the turtles awwhhhh:) there so cute! as are the men that work at the beach bar, my daughter SIAANYPOOO'S LOVED them, however she also loved a bar owner called christos, a handsome chap called Gavin and of course the gardener!
shout out to TINA BAMBINA! she was gorgeous, and a lovely lady:)
miss you all at marelen, see you next year!

"i have just got back from the marelen hotel after staying there for a week with some of my BEST friends. we had a GREAT time, especially at fire bar, although the shots are very very very strong! after fire bar we usually went to CRISTOS' bar, it was generally heaving, but as he loved us so much we always got in and he'd put little naked people of our drinks. but overall, nothing could have been complete without the hard working gardener vissi (who only smokes once every two years) and rhiannon (who never seems to changer he outfit) they were so chatty and friendly i felt instantly at home! BINGO was THEEEEE best!! i loved it. i usually hate bingo but rhiannon and nicks banter across the bar and the cheeky remarks between tina and rhiannon completely did it for me. i was in fits of laughter all night through. i would thouroly reccomend going you will never regret it. thank you for your time reading my review. i hope you enjoyed it."

well chatty, totally looks the the hotty of desperado housewives.
not a smoker, unlike me. smoke like a bloomin chimney i do. by the pool everyday.
anyway im of on one now, arent i!?
rhiannon- what can i say about this gal, PUERR love for her. was wel mint. had a crackalackin time at fire bar with her one night.
she was totally well mint.
AND TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE SAYING SHE WEARS THE SAME CLOTHES ALL THE TIME- i saw her in at least 4 different outfits for the 7 days i was there so HAHAHAAA!
anyway yeahh, go to the fire bar. oh my god, never been to a better bar.
totally could have stayed there till 11 every night. the night scene was well mint there like. could have stayed out late everynight! but i prefer the bar in the hotel.

babelicious hotel like!
"LOVED the hotel marelen.
would THOUROUGHLY recommend going, even if it was just for the entertainment.
Rhiannon ( entertainer) was so good. best entertainer i've ever had. has made me respect entertainers again, blew my breath away!
Vissy, who is the gardener is one of the chattiest, most lively people i've ever met. only smokes once every 2 years! hes a great guy. nick the bar man has terrible music, we had to request once or twice for the tuness to be changed and the lighting to be lowered. this made the departure lounge seem more like a bar as it is meant to be. had wild times in there though! sometimes stayed in as late as 10:30.
hotel pool was great, you were allowed to smoke in the pool and everything. was a big change from england and its petty rules. was a wide selection of ENGLISH ice-creams and ENGLISH crisps. loads of english food so you didnt have to eat the greek stuff. great chinese indian called mahajarah on the strip. had fun times in laganas. great for bars. really posh though, like! LAVVED THE HOTEL!
"oh my god!
i have never stayed in a better hotel in my life, and trust me, i've stayed in some pretty flash hotels! (the holiday inn in liverpool for instance)
the gardening is... oh my god!
it blew me away. i was so excited to meet the man behind the work. he turned out to be a bit of a hunk. you know the gardener on desperate house wives? yeah, he looked abit like him.
he was sooo friendly, i had such a lovely time talking to him, even bought him a drink!
the entertainer (rhiannon) is such an amazing gal. i'm like, such good friends with her now. so glad i met her. and to all those people who thought she didn't do a good job, i'd like to see you do better! my fave one of her entertaining nights was the bingo night. there was intense pressure for me to win. it was jam packed in there, sadly i didn't win. but not everyone can, i stayed on for the full five rounds. the pool is gorgeous. they let you drink and smoke round it so it's really nice actually. they sold loads of ice-creams. i had about 5 a day! oops. some people go every year, so there is a real family feel there. i'll be going back. the food in there was gorgeous we didn't really eat out cos it was so nice. the english breakys are so good. we did go out for a few meals. we went to the chinese indian. it was really nice actually on the nights we'd either go to the bar in the hotel, which was so good! i really enjoyed that bar. after bingo i'd stay on for a few drinks until heading back to my room at 10. or sometimes, but not very often, we'd go to laganas. we went to see the turtles one day. they were very big. i just wish it was closer to laganas, which had a really british feel to it so you felt like you were right at home

"This hotel was great.
it was a 5/10 minute walk from the beach, also a nice taverna (because the hotel food isn't that great) the taverna was so great we ended up eating their 6 times.
the pool was mixed with families and older couples, so it wasn't overly noisy nor did it feel like their were hen nights.
for the time of year the weather was great, and the people were so nice!
go to the kalamaki beach taverna, the food is imense and not overly expensive.
don't go to the chindian, its vileeee
the hotel staff can be nice (i.e. Vissy)
he's the gardener and he trims his bushes very nicely.
vissy only smokes one cigarette every 2 years, so he never has a break from gardening.
rhiannon is the entertainer, we only went to the bingo ( for a joke) and she closed of her audience to ask tee if she'd been there last time when she'd said 20-0 instead of just 20.
and she wore the same outfit all week.
overall i had a lovely experience and wouldnt mind repeating it :)
DONT GO TO THE CHINESE INDIAN

"Me and my boyfriend have just returned from a weeks stay at the Hotel Marelen and loved every min of it!! Fantastic room, very spacious (we did have a 2 bedroom apartment like, but we had paid the under occupency for it). Amazing views of the huge balcony and loved the fact you see the low flying aircraft coming in and out!!!
The hotel itself was set in beautiful grounds and was amazed that it was only a 3 star as it was so well equiped and clean/tidy.
Entertainment was on the cards every noght, and although we didn't go to any of the nights as we liked to walk through Kalamaki strip or taxi into lagnas, it always seemed to be popular and busy. There was a free pizza night, a BBQ, Bingo, greek nights and singers just to name a few things.
I found eating and drinking in the hotel to be very reasonable and tasty! We were self catering so we usually popped into Kalamaki for the breakfast, but you could pay 5 euros to eat the buffet breakfast, and it was pretty decent.
Kalamaki itself is a lovely place, lots of fantastic places to eat and drink (Parthenon and Heavens Kitchen to name 2)
We taxied into Laganas and Zante Town and it was very reasonable and we had the same mint taxi driver from Lagnas 3 times in a row, he was very entertaining!!
Plenty of places to buy tickets for day trips on the main strip so i would look into that if your going and fancy a cruise to see shiprecked (Class!) and the turtle trip can be caught from Lagans beach for about 10 euros.
All in all we had a fantastic holiday and i'm sure we will be venturing back to Kalamaki and Hotel marelen again in the near future.
Give this hotel a chance and don't asume the worst from bad reviews, you have to see it to make your own mind up."

"The overall apartments and rooms were kept to a good standard. After visiting for 2 weeks during the school summer holidays, I found the apartments to be kept quite clean and tidy.
The rooms were serviced and changed everyday except sunday where the bins were emptied. All of the maids do a very good job as they can be seen cleaning all over the hotel.
The "childrens entertainer" Rhiannon wasn't polite or helpful. She would go to any lengths to avoid you but may just but in at any time and shout at you "you all right guys?". For the two weeks that I was there, she wore the same clothes for 13 days and only changed on the last day. The kids club was advertised but rhiannon was never seen running it. We never stopped for the evening entertainment except the barbecue which was OK but you wern't allowed to choose your own meats. There wasnt any steak or english sausages either. The most exciting part was the chicken thighs.
It could take ages to get served in the bar as the barman was talking to his friends and just not paying attention to who wanted what.
Don't use the computer in the hotel. you can use exactly the same facilities in an internat cafe along the main strip for half the price.
AVOID THE PLAYGROUND (KIDDIE CORNER)
IT'S A DEATHTRAP!!!!
EVERYTHING IS EITHER BROKEN OR DIRTY!!
The hotel is situated a short walk from the kalamaki-laganas main road which is easily reached by 5 minutes walk. Should you want to take a taxi to or from the main road, they will go anywhere in kalamaki for 5 euros.
Quite a nice selection of Bars and Restaurents which offer greek aswell as english food.
It is worth talking to some workers of each restaurent before going in as they do give away discount cards. I would recommend mermeids and parthenon. These are further along the main road.
Enjoyed the holiday except the entertainer and the entertainment. The aircraft noise is not that frequent but it is different to see them just landing and taking off. The airport is only 5 minutes drive away but the airport is very small. The security man screening the bags wasn't even watching the scanner. he was just talking to his mate. The plane was delayed 56 minutes going out to the number of aircraft going to zakynthos airport and we were delayed 2 hours coming back due to out plane being delyaed due to the previous problem. the airport is very small but you are not required to que outside in the heat. Your bags are screened infront of you before you check in.
overall a good holiday with temperatures over 40 degrees!!"
