The second time and not the last
"It was good to visit George, Andriana, Angela again. After our stay last year with them, we thought it would be a good idea to visit again in 2010.The food is fantastic, the Sovlaki is something else. A hot June 35 degrees, thank goodness we had room 19 on the corner for the breeze, good after walking back from the beach which is only 10 minutes walk away.Watch the Greek drivers at night and keep well in. Yes we will return in 2011. Thanks again David and Angie"

Review of Potamitis Studios, Alykes
"My wife and I stayed in room 12 at Potamitis in August 2008. We obtained a late booking from a well-known British tour operator. Potamitis Studios are situated on the picturesque outskirts of the otherwise unpicturesque resort town of Alykes. The beach (sand, not shingle) however is very good as are the pretty hills that surround the area. The studios are situated in three blocks of about eight apartments each. Oursâ was of a very satisfactory size, and farthest away from the pool and dining area (ie. quietest). The room was well furnished as self-catering accommodation, with a superb balcony with a view of the nearby hills and a setting sun. The apartment was kept well clean by George and Andrianaâs staff. The pool and poolside sunbathing was of an excellent standard, particularly the raised sun terrace toward the rear with a beautiful olive grove and poplar trees surrounding it. The studios may be classed as 3 star on the official measure, yet as Zakynthian holiday accommodation goes (and many visitors to Zante can well-attest it can be dreadful!) Potamitis is superior in almost every way. There is however, a catch. Potamitis is exclusively tied to its British tour operator. As a result, when the market takes a dip and bookings tail off, the operator cuts its prices to fill spaces principally at the cost of the proprietor. The proprietor is then anxious to recoup lost revenue by selling on non-inclusive goods and services. For example, Potamitis has a café/bar-come-evening restaurant, with standard Alykes fare. The chicken kebab I had on the first night was very good, though the lunchtime burger was nothing special (and be warned that âmayonnaiseâ in Alykes means salad cream). All snacks and drinks are at ârestaurantâ prices (2⬠for a can of cola). George understandably wants his customers to buy as much as they can from him, and does little to disguise his disappointment should they not. Some of his repeat customers may well be happy to spend almost their entire holiday inside the confines of his establishment, but thatâs not to everyoneâs taste. George is also in danger of marketing Potamitis at a particular customer type: British, middle-aged, unvarying in choice, and looking for Britain under a Greek sun. If thereâs enough of these customers out there then good luck to him. However I for one prefer something a little more diverse than several nightsâ around the same table, to the tunes of a 90s party compilation album. Aside of this Iâd recommend earplugs as one or all of the; local chickens; for-hire 50cc mopeds; (and occasionally) the resident dog, can keep one awake at night. Cooling fans, and an in-room safety deposit box, are available for rent at 15⬠each for 7 nights. All in all though, Iâm glad we chose Potamitis. The reviews here certainly swayed it for us and although I suspect some of them are from Georgeâs overtly-loyal customers, one cannot knock what he must have done to generate such loyalty."

good value for money
"Just returned from a last minute break to this property. Booked it from the Thomson small and Friendly brochure and thats exactly what it is. George and his wife are excellent hosts and do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Her cooking is very good both Greek and more standar European fare, her beef stifado is the best. I've had. It was very hot when we were there, between 35c -40c most days which made the nights quite warm. the only problem with this was that we had a ground floor room (no15) so we had no privacy as the patio/balcony opened out onto the car park, therefore, the room was quite stuffy so we paid for a fan and used it all night every night. The pother problem with sleep was that the matress had seen better days! and was quite hard so wasn't that comfortable. Beach is a short walk away as is the village of Alykes. There are loads of small restaurants within walking distance. Try the Nisiotiko just down the road for excellent typical Greek cuisine. I would definately return to this part of Greece."

Potamitis studios are brilliant
"We have just returned fom a wonderful 2 weeks stay at the Potamitis studios in Alykes. George,Adrianna and their family are excellent hosts.Very friendly and helpful at all times. Adrianna cooks all the food and offers a large choice of very tasty, well cooked food. The bar is lively and friendly on an evening. Most guests we talked to had stayed at the Potamitis several times before. We have been going to Alykes for the last 10 years and have stayed at the Potamitis the last 2 years,in our opinion the Potamitis are the best studios in Alykes. John and Marie"

"We have just returned from a fantastic week at the Potamitis Studios. Great location surronded by olive groves in a quiet part of Alykes. George and Andriani, the owners, were perfect hosts - the apartments were spotlessly clean and well cared for. The pool is a lovely place to relax and we would recommend trying Andriani's cooking, especially the beef Stifado! George organised car hire for two days and we easily covered the island. We much prefered the quieter northern end of the island and found a perfect little cove to swim and sunbathe not far from the famous Smugglers Cove (this is well worth a visit for the fabulous blue sea). All in all we would highly recommend a stay at the Potamitis Studios."

Good for mature couples
"Our arrival was not auspicious - we left the sunshine of Luton to arrive in Zakinthos in the first rain they had received in 4 months! However, after a reasonable transfer by coach we were greeted at our accomodation by George who gave us the "dos and donts" for our stay - he is very anxious that you get your supplies from him and, like other comments on this site, we found he did labour the point a bit when it came to purchasing food and drink from his bar. Our apartment was in a building set away from the main pool area but had a nice view overlooking the mountains. Like many other people we found them to be VERY basic - the kitchenette facility could do with a bit of a revamp and the mismatched cutlery and crockery left a bit to be desired. Don't worry if the kettle appears to switch itself off after a few seconds - it comes on and off intermitently and does EVENTUALLY boil the water (bottled of course). The rooms were cleaned every day (the maid is not given a day off!) and we could not fault her diligence. Be aware that it is still fairly simple living in this area - the water pressure and temperature are temperamental and the "shower" is best used by taking it off the bracket and giving yourself a quick hosedown! The shared balcony with your neighbours makes a nice touch if you want to make some new friends over a G&T watching the sun go down over the mountain before dinner. The pool is one of the cleanest we have been to (if a bit cold!) and the surrounding terrace area is well maintained. Yes, you do pay 1.5 euro for a matress but its not compulsorary and still cheaper than â¬7 for 2 beds and a parasol on the beach! The beach is mostly pebble and very narrow, but very gently shelving out to sea so safe for litlle ones (and those of us who are less than confident in the water) - the sea was warm and clear when we were there, no jellyfish or seaurchins to be seen. Alykes town is pretty small, most restaurants are basically the same although we did enjoy Picadilly on the road into Alykes from Potamitis and Olympic Kitchen is great for a change (if a little more expensive). We paid an average â¬30 for 2 starters, 2 mains and a carafe of wine in most places. The food at Potamitis IS good, Andrianna works hard to make great wholesome food altought the menu is a little limited for vegetarians. Breakfast was reasonable - black pudding if you want it!?? Lunch was good value for money although we only had it a couple of times. A couple of shelves of books in each "block" is a great way to while away some time in the sun, no blaring musak and good company made it a great stay for us. All in all I would say Potamitis is a good base for more mature couples (there is nothing for kids at all) who enjoy a good base for a relaxing week in the sun. Younger people may find the lack of activity a little boring although it can be found in some of the bars in Alykes this is not an area famous for 18-30 clubbing! We enjoyed our break at Potamitis and the enthusism of George and his family for making sure that their guests had a great holiday."

The Potamitis Apartments were very nice,...
"The Potamitis Apartments were very nice, really enjoyed our stay there. We only managed to get these apartments as Thomson had decided to tell us that they were no longer sending people to the hotel we had booked a few weeks before! But, turned out to be a positive move. The owner of the apartments was very helpful, friendly and went out of his way to do everything he could to make our stay a good one. In fact, most of the people that were there the same week as us were 'regulars' having been to Potamitis at least once before and liked it so much, they return year after year. A good sign! The road to the beach / Alykes centre doesn't have a footpath, so just keep your eyes out for the motorbikes/cars/trucks/coaches etc, the road is not that busy, but the drivers could do with being a bit more pedestrian friendly. It's about a 10 minute gentle stroll to the 'cross roads' - straight over for the beach and a couple of bars, left or right for more bars and restaurants. We found a couple of nice restaurants to eat in, the one on the corner on the right hand side of the crossroads with the beach in front of you (I forget the name -) seemed to be the best, both in food and price, but everyone is competing on price, so 2 of us could eat and have drinks for less than 25euros. Great value. For nice surroundings (and a game of crazy golf if you want it) is the Iris Bar, just about halfway on the right hand side from the apartments to the beach. Happy Hour was good with a wide variety if cocktails on offer. All in all a great holiday, great weather, nice apartments - just a shame that the Thomson rep didn't seem interested in being helpful (which wasn't an issue for us, but could have been for some others)."

"We had an extremely relaxing happy two weeks in Zante in June 2004 - staying with George and Adrianna at Potamitis Studios in Alykes. George, Adrianna, their daughter Angela and grandma made us feel most welcome from the minute we arrived. The accommodation and food was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. The organised trips were good value especially the trip to see the turtles. We found the whole holiday the best we have ever had and will be going back to Potamitis next year and probably for many years to come. We came back from our holiday totally refreshed and wanting to go back again. We have never felt like this about any other holiday we have taken in the past."
