A great break

"Just returned from our 3rd visit to this hotel (June 8 - 15). We love it.

Firstly the people. Regulars (who seem to be the majority of guests) will know it is run by the Valais family (Mother Georgia, George, & Katerina). They have help from Roxy and also a number of seasonal staff from various countries (this year Sonia behind the bar and Michael in the kitchen). It seems the emphasis is on making you feel 'at home' and this hotel does that for us.

The hotel has around 30 rooms which this year have had the bathrooms upgraded. I believe all rooms have air conditioning. We have never found them other than clean and tidy (room serviced every day). Breakfast is included which is 'basic' continental (full english can be had at the pool bar or in other local establishments. The pool bar is the centre of activity, and there always seems to be plenty of spare pool side tables/chairs/beds.

The location is Alykanas right on the beach. Beds are available (€7 per pair per day) and these front onto a very gently shelving beach - you can go around 50 metres before needing to swim. This year George has joined forces with Costas from Alikes and they run a wide variety of water related activities (including paragliding, motor boat hire, pedaloes, canoes etc). The view from the beach is towards the tip of Zakynthos and across to Cephalonia (scene of Captain Corelli's Mandolin if you've ever seen the film).

Weather was sunny most days, but with a strong breeze blowing all week which the locals all said was unusual. We had one morning of rain but it soon warmed up again.

You can either eat in the hotel or alternatively use any of the many local restaurants. It doesn't seem to matter which you choose as they all offer the same general menu and the prices are usually similar. Favourites for us include Olympic Bar, Mantalenas, Medousa, Lemon Tree all an easy stroll from the hotel.

Local trips include Zante town, the Blue caves, the 'shipwreck', and turtles (in Laganas), which we are told are all worth 'ticking off' but we haven't personally experienced them.

We go for a relaxing week and this hotel works for us. It always provides good service, but the main reason we return is the Valais family - they make us feel part of their family. If you need any other endorsements for this hotel, there are many guests who return year after year, some multiple times per year, and there was 1 person who claimed to have been there over 100 times before, and we have no reason to doubt him.

The only down side to a visit to this hotel/island is you usually have to go through the airport which just doesn't seem able to cope. Arrivals have improved (we were at the hotel bar within 1 hour of landing) but departures is still a test of your endurance and stamina with some long queues outside at times. But don't let this put you off, treat it as an experince and we feel sure you will be rewarded.

A gem."

"We have been going to the Valais Hotel each year for the last four years and we have just booked to go again in June.

The location is perfect, the rooms clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. Roxy is an absolute delight, always smiling and nothing is too much trouble.

Continential style breakfast with a good Pool Bar Menu for snacks during the day or a substantial evening meal. What ever you choose will be first class.

The swimming pool is large and kept very clean. If you prefer the beach, just cross the road and you're on it. Here you will find Hotel Sun Loungers and an extensive range of watersports ranging from Pedalos to cruising on your own motor boat.

All in all, this hotel has something for everyone and once you have been there you will want to go back again and again."

Love the Valais

"We are just about to book our fifth consecutive trip to the Hotel Valais and our friends who came with us two years ago are coming along too. It's a place that will always feature on our yearly family holidays and why? It's because the hotel is situated in the perfect area of Alikanas, right opposite the beach, brilliant for the children (9 & 10) if they fancy playing in the shallow sea and the sands, or having a go on the pedalo's and the boats and only a five minute stroll to the town itself.

Although there is only one pool, which initially worried us as the children weren't confident swimmers and used arm bands, however, they stayed in the shallow end and it has never been too rowdy an atmosphere to frighten them, in fact, their swimming came on in leaps and bounds.

The pool is a perfect size and quite easy to do a few laps to cool off or work off the delicious food, with sun loungers and tables with umbrellas around it and although the pool and bar is open to anyone wishing to take in the atmosphere, there is never any difficulty or need to reserve said loungers!

To get to the beach from the hotel, is just a stroll over the sun terrace, down some steps and across the road. The beach area for the hotel has comfortable sun loungers and palm-beach shades and there's no worries of going without a drink or food, you order it at the beach hut and it's then brought over for you! Perfect if you fancy one of the many cocktails or an ice cool beer or a bowl of fresh fruit salad or food from the menu.

The hotel itself is very cosy, not too many rooms, which is perfect for us and it has just two levels. Each year we have noticed more upgrades from air-conditioning to increasing the size of the outside bar. The accommodation is B&B and breakfast consists of bread, cheese, ham, toast, tea (usually PG!), coffee, juice etc. The rooms have fridges and the beds and pillows are very comfortable with each room having a balcony with table and chairs and most importantly, everywhere is spotless including the pool area. The other thing about the hotel is that is serves food (and drinks!!) all day, so if the children are busy playing in the pool or on the beach or taking a breather from the mid-day sun playing snooker in the cool of the indoor bar, then there are no worries about having to fit a meal in within a certain time.

The owners, George, Katerina and Mummy Valais and all the staff, in particular Roxanna, are all very friendly and welcoming and ensure that you have an enjoyable stay, nothing is too much trouble for them.

Every Friday night they have a 'Greek night' (around 12 euros for adults, 6 for children) which the children love and we have to try and book our stay around this night. They put on barbeque with authentic greek fare and sangria on the sun terrace with greek dancers who end up getting the audience participating.

It's the most relaxing place that we have ever been to and although each year we ask the children where they'd like to go for their holiday, they always say Zante and we've never contemplated trying any other hotel, it will always be the Valais.

Give it a try, see if you fall in love with the place as much as we have, I'm sure you won't be disappointed."

"My boyfriend Shane and I just returned from the Holiday of our dreams, when we were dropped off outside Valais Hotel, all we could see is white sand and blue water (exactly what we were looking for), This Gorgeous Beach just at our doorstep. . . During our Holiday we found the Hotel to be the real traditional Greek Hotel, (family run of course), we couldn't have got a warmer welcome from George, Katerina, Roxie and Mum Valais!...the Hotel is Immaculately Clean and we couldnt have asked for nicer, with clean towels and sheets everyday. The Food was great, and the menu served to you while lying soaking up the sun on the beach was an extra bonus, George has all the water sports you can ask for, and you can even hire a dinky boat all by yourself to go up the coast and drop into all the beaches on the way.
Our Greek relations were on the island a while back and they dropped to see the Valais family, and after all the tourists that stayed there, they still rembered US!...
See you the August guys xxx

"I have been comimg to this hotel twice a year since May 2002 and have no reason not to go back again in May & September in 2006.
I book directly with them and always receive a prompt reply with my confirmation of booking.
The hotel is run by the family and have always found them helpful and friendly.
They are also the only hotel in Alykanas, as far as I know, that provides a beach service for drinks/food which means that I do not even have to move off my sun-bed and the beach area is cleared and raked every morning without fail.
My room was cleaned every day and the air conditioning was a comforting relief after a day in the sun. I am quite prepared to pay a small fee for this as other hotels/apartments do not have any air conditioning at all.
Each year I see old friends who like me keep coming back to the Valais because they like it there.
I would certainly recommend it.

Why not come and join me.

"My friends and I have been to the Hotel Valais for 9 years now. We cannot fault the place, we are going back this year in June and will continue to do so.
The rooms are clean with balcony's, the breakfast is good and plentiful. The staff are absolutely brilliant and we now look upon them as our friends.
Anything we ask for is quickly dealt with, any problems are sorted out very quickly. The swimming pool is large and spotless, it is cleaned every day. From the pool you walk down a few steps over a small road and you are on the beach. What more could anyone ask for. We will return again and again. In our view it is the most pleasant, the best situated, and the most friendly hotel. We are looking forward to our holiday in June at the Valais and to see Roxy, George, Katarina and Mum Valais."

"We have found The Valais over 18 years of visiting to be a first class hotel. It is true that over the years the resort of Alykanas has become busier and that new hotels have been built. However the Valais has remained true to the spirit of the resort and has retained its Greek tradition. The family who run the hotel are warm, friendly people who welcome you to a home as well as a hotel. They want you to have a great holiday. The location is superb and the beach service is a great addition. Rooms are comfortable, clean and well maintained. The hotel staff are always willing to help, at all times of the day and George is always willing to keep the bar open late! There are newer hotels in the resort, but The Valais proves that new is definitely not better. We will be returning again this year for our 19th holiday and are already counting the days."

"Have stayed in this hotel several years ago,how sad to go back and see its decline, rooms old and tatty, had to ask after four days for clean towels and sheets.
Needs serious money spending on it as it could be a lovely place to stay again.
People will not return here if they can stay at the newer hotels further along the beach for nearly half the money,it costs to stay at the valais.
They also need to do something about the dogs that howl all night at the back of the hotel, when i mean they howl all night i mean all night!
Also must mention the breakfast which is supposed to be a continental one, when we were asked if we wanted bread or toast i thought they were joking, ended up going out for breakfast sometimes.
Basically was not worth the money, lovely resort and location, but needs a serious update."

good location..........

"We spent two weeks at the Valais. The hotel is right by the beach so the location could not be better. The beach itself is beautiful, although it has deteriorated since 2002. Due to the construction of the new hotels (Alykanas Village hotel etc), more people have been using the beach, and this year (2005) there was a lot of litter on the beach and in the shallow water. This is a tragedy for such a lovely beach.
The hotel staff are quite friendly.
The hotel is quite old, and some of it could do with refurbishment, particularly the bathrooms which were not nice. It was a shame, because some investment on the rooms would pay dividends in customer satisfaction and create more return business.
The pool itself is nice, although the pool area is not really suitable for small children as there is a ledge around the pool (about 3 or 4 feet from the edge) which is not marked. Also there are very steep steps down from the pool to street level, and these are constantly open.
They offer food at the hotel bar, which is generally quite nice quality, although it tends to be more expensive than neighbouring bars and hotels (e.g. full english breakfast is 6 Euros at the Valais versus 4.80 at the Mill Bar or 5 at the Alykanas Village Hotel). The portions for some snacks/meals can be quite small for the price, and compared with other places in the resort. It depends on which food you choose.
They offer a food and drink service to people using their beach sunbeds, which is very pleasant. These sunbeds cost 7 euros a day, which is a little bit more expensive than those in front of Neraida which cost 5 euros a day.
Sadly the hotel is not willing to give you a kettle for the room, which is unfortunate as other places do have this facility. There is a fridge in the room though.
You can pay a daily rate for air conditioning or a fan (4 euros for aircon, and 2 euros for a fan).
They tend to screen a film each night, which is a good idea. However, the sound quality is often poor, and people playing pool just behind the screen can make it impossible to hear what is going on. This was frustrating. They need to make that room a no-go zone for anyone other than film watchers for the duration of the one nightly film, and improve sound quality, if it is to be a real enticement.
Overall we had a lovely holiday, in this quiet hotel with nice staff.
There are plenty of restaurants locally.
The best one in the whole resort, in our opinion, is the Medousa, which catches its own fish, and offers excellent quality food, and the most charming service. Mantalena and Romanza also provide excellent food served by friendly staff."
