The island of Lefkas (Lefkada) sits just off the west coast of Greece and is part of the Ionian Island group. Access to the island is via a swing bridge which has replaced the originally ferry that would carry passengers over the narrow channel of water between mainland Greece and Lefkas. Originally overlooked by holiday firms, tourism on the island began to increase with the completion of the Preveza airport close by on the Greek mainland.
On the east coast of the island is the resort of Nidri which offers safe beaches and watersports for families as well as a bars and restaurants in the main town. Over on the south coast is Vassiliki which is the second largest resort after Nidri and is known for being one of the best places for windsurfing in Europe.
Weather on the island is Mediterranean in character, much like the other Ionian Islands, but does experience much windier conditions which provide a cooling breeze during the summer, but can become much more intense during the winter months.
