10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"This hotel is nothing short of amazing. some of the other reviews I cannot share. we just got back last night and it truly is 5 star. the food was amazing the service from reception to dining room to bar areas was all exceptional.makes our waiter was the best. he worked out the tavern from 10 am till after dinner closed at 930pm.always smiling and very pleasant. the rooms were spacious clean towels every day fluffy bath robes and slippers. one down side and its very minor not enough hanging space in bedrooms for clothes.surroundings gardens and beach all beautiful. very remote hotel nothing much going on perfect for what we needed.however car hire is cheap and 2 minutes from hotel. ferry crossing with transfers both ways takes a little longer but the scenery is gorgeous. just a shame on this occasion the weather wasn't. Great facilities but let down by the poor service
"We have just returned from a week's stay at the Apollonia. We stayed in one of the deluxe suites and this was great. The kids enjoyed the space in the lovely clean pool and the majority of the time we were the only people in the 'private' pool. They loved the jacuzzi too. The rooms were really nice and the two bedroom set up worked really well for our family. However, the rooms weren't the cleanest and as they were only 2 months old this is something that they need to get on top of now. When moving the bed to look for something I was horrified to see something there that had been left by a 'happy couple' before. The overall service is not currently 5 star. Dirty plates from room service were still outside our room 24 hours later. We often had to ask for wine lists twice etc. A maintenance man came to repair one of the TV's although obviously couldn't do it so he disabled both of them?? The food was not 5 star. As a previous reviewer mentioned 5 star and buffet don't sit well in the same sentence. Also you could see the same type of sausages from breakfast in a salad that evening - good to minimise food waste but not so good for the guests. You also felt like you had to sharpen your elbows before you went up for the food as there was a tendency for people to be a bit over assertive. Also, it was hard to find a table in the restaurant at busy times. However, George was a bright star that stuck out massively from the other staff. Perhaps they were too tired after staying up late and drinking in the hotel bar?! The surrounding area is not the most attractive although once the trees and shrubs they have planted grow this will improve things dramatically. We had stayed on the other side of the island and we were disappointed by the beaches on the Lixouri peninsula. This hotel needs to work out its big teething problems. The infrastructure is in place but it was just let down by the poor implementation."

Has potential to be a five star
"This beautifully built hotel has the potential to be a true five star. The service was not five star. I hope it gets better as time goes on. It could be because the hotel is new and we ended up being in the middle of the learning process. Thanos at the front desk was an exception. He was always willing to help and his professionalism and willingness to help were a step above the rest in this resort. We stayed there for one week and truly enjoyed the facilities. The price we paid was a real bargain, 137 Euros a night and it included breakfast and dinner."

Wow! Great value for money in luxiourous surroundings.
"Weâre just back from a weekâs holiday at the Apollonia and would definitely recommend it! It was a totally relaxing week in first class accommodation. We booked through First Choice and thought it offered excellent value for money. The hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Lixouri (10 Euros each way in a taxi). We stayed half board and the buffet breakfast and dinner offered an excellent choice. We always enjoyed the food, I had one piece of fish which I didnât like â¦. In a week I think thatâs pretty good going! Thereâs a shop in the Cephalonia Palace Hotel just down the road where you can get essentials and also a small shop a bit further on which had more choice. Other than that thereâs a big supermarket about 5 mins drive away towards Lixouri, or of course Lixouri itself. We hired a car for 4 days and saw a bit of the island, which is lovely. Also visited Vatsa beach which is a lovely unspoilt beach just up the road. The beach near the hotel is only about 6 minutes walk away, has a few bars and offers a great selection of water sports. The hotel itself is nicely furbished with lots of original artwork. Wi fi, free of charge, can be accessed from the lobby â you just get a password from reception which lasts for 12 hours. We paid for internet in the bedroom which wasnât very good and extremely slow! We found the hotel very quiet, often wondered where everyone went during the day and evenings. There was never a problem to get 3 sun beds together whatever time of day. We found the staff extremely friendly and helpful, George, the manager said, as my son was unwell, if he felt worse during the night to get reception to wake him up and he'd personally take us to the hospital. All in all a totally relaxing week, thoughly enjoyed by myself and my two children."

Extremely nice hotel. Fully met expectations and more
"We're not package holiday veterans by any measure, so approached the whole venture with a good degree of scepticism. We need not have worried. The hotel is superb, brand new with high-quality finishes and plenty of space. The rooms are big - we had a family room, which had a mezzanine level for the kids, which they loved and gave us some peace. Rooms are air conditioned and have an electric shutter to keep the light out. They have big LCD TVs, in-room internet access on the TV (if you want to spend 5 Euros), movies on demand, etc. Bathrooms are very nice with 2 basins, decent bath/shower, etc. The hotel has a wonderful pool, which wasn't particurarly busy. Some of the rooms have their own private pool, which takes some of the pressure off the main hotel pool and makes it a pleasure rather than a scrum. Food is very good considering it's buffet catering for so many guests and not cooking to order. The chefs are extremely friendly and will do whatever they can to help. There's masses of food and we ate very well. The dining room is looked after by George who deserves a special mention for talking to all of the guests at every meal and making everyone feel so welcome. The Greeks love children and make a huge fuss of them wherever they go, and George and his staff were no exception. We would highly recommend the Apollonia Resort & Spa and hope to return one day. Five stars all round."

lovely new hotel, that will get even better
"We stayed for a much needed weeks holiday in July. The Apollonia, had not long been open and unsurprisingly still felt very new. There were a few teething problems, but overall this is an excellent resort and I have already reccomended to friends & family Areas for improvement include reception staff who were quite slow and abrupt, at times they came across as disinterested... When we checked-out it took almost half an hour and they seemed bamboozled when we wanted to pay part cash, part credit card. The food in the evenings is impressive for salads (the kiwi, beetoot and feta combo was unexpectedly lovely!) ,and the puddings (all very fresh and looked like they were made on the premises) but poor on hot food options. We had expected lots more fish dishes and greater choice on the freshly prepared section - where it was mainly pasta, chips and fried fish. However, the negatvies are comfortably outweighed by the positives. The pool is fantastic, nice and big - with plenty of sun loungers, we never had to race to put towels on them early in the morning - quite a rare treat compared with so many other hotels we have stayed at over the years! The taverna is great to take a break from the sun at lunch - the greek salad was big enough for two to share. All of the catering staff were very friendly and hard working, working under the eagle eye of George who with his unique style of management made sure everyone was kept on their toes! As we were half board, the bills added up over the week, with drinks and lunches adding 200 euros onto the cost of our holiday, something we hadnt really factored in when we booked. Also the quickest route to the Apollonia from the airport is via the ferry, which initially we thought would be a pain, but the trip takes less than half an hour and you can capture some great views of the island whilst enjoying a lovely sea breeze. I'm very confident the teething problems will iron themselves out and this will become a very popular and successful destination - I would definitely reccomend and hope to return in the future. ."

"Just enjoyed a very relaxing stay at apollonia resort and spa. We had hoped to book a jacuzzi suite but these were full so we had 2 x standard (deluxe) rooms on the ground floor. The accomodation is of good standard and the resort layout and landscaping very well done. We usually holiday in private rental villas with own pool so we were dreading the usual hotel problem with people reserving sunbeds with towels BUT we were pleased to find that this was not a problem at all we only saw two incidents of this during our weeks stay. We would generally stroll down to the pool at about 10-10:30 to find loads of sunbeds available. The food was OK but not five star - not really sure that five star and buffet belong in the same sentence anyway. The lunchtime food at the taverna was very nice. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The absence of any entertainment or "animation" team was a delight. Would go again and recommend."

You wont be sorry if you book it
"Having travelled extensively we were looking for a last minute booking and luckily found the Apollonia. We stayed here June/July 2010 and were not disappointed. It's a new spa hotel in a lovely quiet location, with superb facilities. The swimming pool complex, spa, reception and accommodation were of an extremely good quality and all the staff couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome. In our opinion to justify its 5* rating they do need to improve on the quality of food served at the evening meal. While it was satisfactory it wasn't restaurant standard. It was also difficult for vegetarians to determine what was or wasn't a vegetarian dish, so better labeling would help. Having said that we had a wonderful time and would consider returning."

Wonderful - Book it now while you still can!
"Just returned from a weeks stay in one of the pool villas with my husband and three year old daughter. This is a new and stunning hotel. I'm suprised its not marketing itself as a design hotel as the architecture is stunning combing greek and modern styles effortlessly. Room, pool, playroom, restaurant, bar, taverna all fantastic, absolutely first class in all respects. George in the main restaurant is a credit to the hotel (Hello to George from your little Angel Maisie x). All the staff are friendly, proffesional, and happy and smiling despite their long hours. A real 5 star experience not a 4 star pretending to be 5 star as is so often the case. We have travelled all over the world and this is the first hotel I would definitely return to. Book now before everyone finds out how great it is!"

Absolute 5 star quality and service
"We have just returned from a 1 week stay at the Hotel staying in one of the Suites. We feel that this has been by far the best hotel ever stayed in and we have stayed at some top hotels around the world!. The suites are amazing and whether you have a small family and would like to swim whilst they nap or sit in your own pool and watch the stars it really is there to be enjoyed. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and with a small 2 year old we felt welcomed and she enjoyed lots of attention (Thank you Katerina!). The hotel has been built to the highest standards, and stunning decor and fittings. This is by far the best part of the island to stay too for picturesque coves and beach tavernas. Cant say any more other than we have just arrived home and I have looked at our diaries for September!."
