The Best Place to Stay in Sidari

"We have just returned from a late September Holiday and the owners, Pavlos and Anna, were the kindest and most hospitable hosts. Our rooms were excellent, really clean and there was air-con if you wanted it. Meals in the restaurant were much better than anything in Sidari town, beautifully presented, cooked by Anna herself, and absolutely delicious, as well as being very reasonably priced. Anna often gave away samples of traditional Greek family dishes for her guests to try. The pool was the cleanest I've seen, the bar well stocked, and as everybody employed in this very pretty complex are family members, they all take a pride in offering the best service. Sidari main town and strip is just a km walk away, but if it's too hot for you to walk, taxis are just 5 euros, and Pavlos will order one for you. There are a couple of good supermarkets nearby, but unless you have a very large family it's actually cheaper to eat at the Christinas own restaurant with it's extensive menu of Greek, Italian and English dishes. The big breakfasts really are big as well. If you go into town for a Gyros, make sure you go to the Greek cafe selling them and NOT the San Remo which seems to be Italian, and frankly not very good at all. The main town has lost its way a little, trying to provide Brits with what they can have at Blackpool, karaoke, bingo and televised football! But there are still places on the outskirts where you will find Greek music and traditional fare. We will definitely return and book the Christinas Apartments."

Zante

"Myself and my partner....both in our 40s....decided to go to Zante as we like the Greek Islands. The tour operator first booked us into a hotel in Laganas and when we checked up more information, we found that it was mainly 18-30 holidaymakers who stayed there, not suitable for us, so we had to change the hotel at a further cost to us. The company had our money so they werent really bothered. The Christina appartments was set very beautifully and the owner was very considerate....he was aware of his guests of all ages and there was very little noise and trouble from younger guests. It is set away from the strip but is only a few minutes walk and is peaceful even at night. Our room was very basic and we were right at the back of the building...because of our late change in booking, we were given the "dregs"...our view was of nothing but trees and vine leaves, it was like a curtain when you walked out on the balcony. The main room was very small and airless, but it had the necessities, a bed, a fridge, a toaster, a kettle and a hob, all in working order. The bathroom was a joke though. The shower had to be hand held and the door opened into the room so you could manouver into the room but could not shut the door. The whole room smelled damp and unused. So we left the balcony doors open and went out, that was our first mistake. All over Zante, because there is so much vegetation, there is a problem with mosquitos etc if the greenery goes untreated, this was DEFFINATELY the case at the Chistina. All night we could hear the buzzing of the insects and when we got up the next morning we were both covered in bites..my partner had what looked like a map on his back and my lower legs and face were covered. The bedding felt well used and not very well cleaned so we went and demanded that it was changed....which it was....and was changed every other day after...but the hotel manager would not take any responsibilty for the cause of the bites only offering us some sort of insect repellant that was nearly empty. Apart from that the hotel was set in a very pleasant location and the pool area was very clean and we spent lots of time relaxing and swimming in the pool. We spent no time on the beach as it is very dirty, not very pleasant and when you go into the sea from Laganas beach, you come out covered in seaweed. Laganas itself is not a very large place and is not typically Greek with most bar and restaraunt owners being english. There is only a load of clubs and bars, some little tavernas and restaraunts and some touristy shops. There is a bus service that goes regularly to Zante town but that is very crowded and we had to stand all the way when we used it. I will just warn that on the return journey from Zante town, the driver will not take payment on the bus..we were sent back to the bus station to purchase a ticket. Zante town is not very big and is mainly for the locals. I was looking forward to seeing places like the harbour and Solomon Square but there is some pretty views from the harbour and all that is in the square is a town hall with some scaffolding and some outdoor cafes. We went for a boat trip around the island hoping to see places of interest to visit, I have to say the island looked very small and uninteresting. When we got to the blue caves we both just looked at each other in wonder...they are no more than holes in the rock...I have seen more cave like caves on other Islands I have visited!!! The shipwreck was dissappointing too. It looks like white sand on that beach, but it is actually really sharp pebbles. But the sea was very clear and warm and the views from around the island were breathtaking, there are small coves dotted around the coastline that can only be reached by sea and they are fantastic. We did make the best of a rather disappointing holiday, even though it rained non stop for nearly three days and we were only there for a week. Laganas didnt really open until nearly lunch time so to us the hotel was important. And we did find some tavernas and restaurants that are second to none. I would recomend Laganas as either a great place for teenagers etc to go if they want a holiday filled with drinking, sunbathing, clubbing and sleeping until noon or for somebody who has the inclination to hire a car and use Laganas as a base and go and explore the island....though to be honest....I dont think theyd find much. The travel agent knew what we were looking for, why they fobbed us off with Laganas I dont know!!! Just a word of advice, if you DO get bitten etc take your E111 card to the local pharmacy, they are very helpful and will sell you what you need and you can claim the money back."

"I have just returned from the Christina apartments in Sidari and have had a wonderful time. We were unsure what to expect when we arrived as I had read one negative review but I can say that I completely disagree with what was said. We found Pavlo and his family fantastic hosts who went beyond the call of duty to ensure we were happy. Anna also made us some special greek dishes so we could try them These were not on the standard menu. We did not have a poor meal there and in view of this we ate there regularly. They were very tasty and great value in comparison to the restaurants on the strip. We stayed in a studio and the rooms were a good size and kept very clean, as were the grounds. Yes the hotel is on a main road but you didnt really hear any road noise after a few days and in any case you only heard it at the pool as the apartments were behind the bar and so sheltered. This is the first holiday where we didnt have to reserve sun beds as there were plenty and there were usually some free even by mid afternoon. Such a joy not to have to rush out at the crack of dawn with your towel. It is a 10 minute walk away from the main strip but it was all on one level so an easy walk, albeit without pavements. The beach at sidari was clean and large and we never had a problem finding space and beds etc. All in all we had a really enjoyable time and will definitely visit again in the future. The only thing missing from the resort is a crazy golf (we are creatures of habit and missed a game this year)."

"We were very unsure what to expect when we arrived at The Christina Apartments. We arrived at 5 am, absolutely shattered and were shown up to our room by Pavlos. We didn't take anything in!! We had one of the 2 bedroom apartments, which were very basic, but spotlessly clean, comfortable, and contained everything we needed, even a hairdryer in each room!! We went down to the pool after a sleep, and were very pleasantly surprised. The pool wasn't enormous, but was more than adequate for the number of guests. Again, it was very clean, and the sunbeds and pool area were hosed down every night. The bar area was lovely. We only had one evening meal in the bar, which was great. But if you do go, you simply must try the breakfasts. They are wonderful. Bar prices were very reasonable. There are safety deposit boxes which we stuck our passports and travellers cheques in. We were not charged for this, although I have read that some people were. The evening entertainment was sadly lacking. Unfortunately Pavlos, the owner had lost his resident entertainer a few weeks before we arrived. He did show films for the kids though, and football matches etc... The only other negative, if you can call it that, was the location. Quite a walk to the nightlife/bars/restaurants. But a pleasant walk after the heat of the day had died down. The pool was near the main road, so there was considerable traffic noise, but after a while, it really doesn't bother you. All in all, a very enjoyable holiday. Pavlos, his wife, and their children were all lovely, and tried very hard to make our stay as pleasant as possible. I would definitely recommend the Christina Apartments for a value-for-money, friendly holiday."

"We have been going to the Christina appartments every year for the last 10 years as a family and in more recent years as a couple. Pavlos and Anna have become friends and we look forward to seeing them and the warm welcome we receive every year. Try Bavias Taverna for the best food and the warmest welcome in the whole of Sidari. It is only a five minutes walk away from the appartments, turn left at the garage on the corner just after Salt and Pepper, they serve genuine Greek food at reasonable prices, once you have eaten their once you will keep going back. It is also a favourate with locals. We have been eating there for the last 10 years too, sounds boring but after listening to other guests experiences we know we have chosen the best place. You arrive as customers and leave as friends. "

"Have just got back from Sidari for the first time, staying at Christina. I am suprised by Mrs C G's review - we found the apartments to be spotless and Pavlos and his family most accommodating. It is fair to say that he doesn't seem to smile much (but that doesn't seem to relate to him being in a bad mood - quite the reverse) and there is noise from the road (which affects the majority of apartments along the main road into Sidari). The only real spoiler for us was the mozzies - we are clearly the mozzies preferred diet! For anyone about to go, some things to note - which I hope may be useful: According to people who had been there before, Sidari has changed quite a bit over the past couple of years. On 30 July we noticed the prices in the restaurants had increased & you could tell dishes costing 6 euro had been overwritten (by hand) to 8 euro - apparently this denotes peak season! I tried a number of restaurants 'recommended' by previous visitors and on the whole found the food to be very good. In Tex Mex we had to wait over an hour to get our starter (the main course wasn't much better) and friends who went another day had to wait even longer - and they weren't even full! Cactus Jacks in Canal D'Amour was ok but we thought the Pizza restaurant at the opposite end of Sidari to Canal D'Amour - near the main supermarket Pizzeria Venezia was very good - food and service and was frequented by Greeks. Our favourite restuarant was Romana's - down a side road behind the church off the centre of the strip. Excellent food, service and not really any more expensive than anywhere else - but a lot quieter (away from the road) - but get there before 8pm or you will have difficulty getting a table - it too was frequented by Greeks - and I can see why. If you have a car, try Panorama in Afionas - about 12km from Sidari towards Agios Georgios. Fantastic views and sunset - worth that little bit extra and the food every bit as good. Again, get there before 8pm to get a table with an uninterrupted view of the sea/sunset. Went to Aqualand - lots of travel agents along the road/strip doing deals but make sure you find out how long you will be at the park - varies from 5 to 8 or 9 hours - price isn't everything. First Saturday in August and I couldn't believe how quiet the park was. Max 5 min wait for any ride - many no wait at all. Beach BBQ on a glass bottom boat is good value for 14 euros. Monastery above Paleokastritsa is well worth a visit but no one tells you it shuts (completely) from 1pm to 3pm every day - so arrive with at least an hour to fully appreciate it. Exchange rate in the resort is better than in the uk (just). Everywhere advertised exchange of 1.28/9 when at home the rate was 1.22 but after deducting fees (they don't advertise) you end up with nearer 1.25. Beware credit cards too - most places add 5% or more (I was charged 8% in one travel agent). Some restuarants (inc Romana's) don't take them either. Best bet - if you can - is take Nationwide Flexaccount cash card and use a cashpoint as they don't charge for foreign cash withdrawals. Car hire is very reasonable - 50 euros for a couple of days with a smallish car and worth doing to reach the better beaches (Arillas was the nicest/sandiest one locally - but budget for hire of sunloungers and sunshades at 2.50 euros each). If you do hire a car, don't leave it late or on a Sunday to fill up with petrol though as the petrol stations will be closed. Wouldn't recommend scooter hire unless you are experienced on two wheels as the roads are more potholes than tarmac. That said, if you are careful, confident and experienced then it is a cheaper alternative to hiring a car. Although I thought Sidari a little 'Brits Abroad' and noisier than I would have preferred, my kids (18 & 15) and my wife would all be happy to return - and you can take that to be quite some recommendation. Enjoy Sidari! "

"I read these comments and I can't believe we've been to the same place, or met Pavlos the friendly owner, the man we've spent 2 weeks at his studios was very short tempered, snappy, irritable, and definatly didn't smile during our stay there, on the contrary, by the second sentence he was always shouting, every single thing seem to set him off (do appreciate it was hot). According to their website safety deposit boxes are free, when we got there, I asked him only to be told they're only free for THEIR customers, staying at their apartment doesn't mean you're their customer, when I asked him to clarify he insisted only people drinking at their bar, eating their food and changing money are considered their customers, staying at the aparment doesn't mean anything. The place is on the main road into Sidari with the constant noise from tractors, buses, motorbikes, the mattresses were filthy, simple measures could have easily resolved this. The rest of the owners do work hard to keep up the place, the pool the grounds but the atmosphere was so bad, no one smile, everyone is exhausted andoverworked."
