Good experience at Matoula
"We stayed for 2 weeks in the last two weeks of September 2011. We liked the studio apartment. Fairly good views towards the sea from our apartment and looking towards the mountains of Albania in the distance. The room was cleaned evryday aprt from Sundays. The whole complex was spotless and the receptionist Dimitra was really cheerful and very helpful. They also changed travellers cheques at a better rate than the bank in Acharavi town, which also avoided the queue in the bank. The only slight criticism we had of the room was the lack of mosquito nets on the balcony doors so you could only rely on the shutters to keep the room circulating air, and also there are no ceiling fans which meant that when it was hot at night it was quite airless. We used the air conditioning for a few nights so we could close the doors and keep cool and keep out the hungry mozzies. This costs 5 euros a night which would add up over the fortnight. However using a plug-in mosquito repellent plus burning a mozzie coil outside the doors did the trick, although the ceiling fan was missed. The pool is very nice and a good size and in September was a lovely temperature. The pool is well maintained and the pool side bar offers everthing you need. There is a really good value full English breakfast which we had twice and is excellent value. Orange juice, coffee, double eggs double sausage double bacon mushrooms beans plus 2 toast with jam. All for 4 Euros. Yum! Nikos the Barman was really good value. Always cheerful. Acharavi itself is a reasonable size town offering good choice of supermarkets, loads of Tavernas and a few coffe shops and bars. Pleanty of choice of car and bike hire. We used Greg's near the roundabout and that was pretty good value. Good little cars and very friendly. The town is at a nice part of the island with Kassiopi a few kilometers away. The local beach is quite nice albeit a bit stoney unless you walk to the right for about 20 minute where it becomes sandier. The complex is convenient for the beach (2 min walk) and the shops (3 mins). Overall we had a great stay at Matoula and I recommend it. I would give it 8 out of ten. Nothing negative to say. You will enjoy it here. Acharavi isn't the most lively place which suited us fine, but if you're looking for clubs and a wild time its probably not for you. We booked through First choice and we compared notes with other guests on prices we paid. We got the worse deal for some reason but it seems that going through a travel agent may cost less. Excursions for boat trips were booked through Cosmic excursions in Kassiopi and were much cheaper than the prices if we'd booked through our holiday operator. Take the evening sunset cruise and the lazy day cruises. Great fun and I recommend these."

"Just returned from a 2 week holiday to the Matoula Apartments in Acharavi. Agree with all the other reviews good points, so I don't feel its necessary to repeat them all. Not much evening entertainment in the hotel, or Axcharavi. However a 25 minute walk down the beach takes you to Roda, where there is a bit more entertainment. Sidari is about 20 minutes drive away, 17euro's in a taxi, lots of nightlife there. Food at the pool bar is absoloutely amazing, full English for only 4 euro's! An amazing restaurant is Woody's, amazing staff and outstanding food - try the milkshakes! 2 good bar's are "Harry's Bar" and "Adonis Cafe". Nikkos, the night time barman, is very funny - good at getting laughs and doing card ticks! Spiros, the day time barman, is equally lovely - but has a slightly more buisnessy head on, but he's still a really great person. Rooms are basic, but spotlessly clean. Didn't need a/c, because my family are good at dealing with the heat. Would love to reutrn.⺠⥠Nikkos if you read this - "CHIP SHOP?! Not chip shop, cheap shop!"."

lovely relaxing resort
"me and my partner age 31 and 35 have just got back from staying here it was lovely nice clean rooms and friendly staff, pool area lovely and relaxing not much entertainment in the evening really just the same cd being played over and over but didnt really mind it as we spent most nights going out i would recommend woodys or alex,s turn left out of the apartment and walk down towards the beach you cant miss it.we did go to a few resturants on the main road but didnt rate there food am a fussy eater though so that might be why :)yamas is a really good bar probley the only bar that plays good music if am honest if you do fancy going here you have to go aqualand it was brill you dont really get long to be there but its worth going we got picked up by bus at 9.50 got there about 12ish but then bus came to pick you up at 4.30 had a top time though also went hydropolis its not that far from apartment really turn right as you come out walk to main road turn left and carry on walking till you see it we wish we would of walked because its the same price on the door anyway and you will get longer to stay there.i would not recommend paradise beach glass bottom boat bbq it was awfull when we got to the beach you couldnt walk on the pebbles it was absolutely boiling and full of wasps the bbq wasnt up to much either i didnt eat but my partner did a piece of chicken some salad and a slice of melon nobody could eat there food though because the wasps were following you about and landing on your food we went back on the boat after about 20 mins it was horrid.roda is a lovely place we walked up to it a few times nice sandy beach and lots of shops, bars and restarants.i dont know if we would go back but then again this was our 1st holiday abroad together so we wouldnt mind seeing a few other places 1st so maybe one day we will go back, nicos who works the evening shift in the apartment is really nice he did close the bar early some nights but hes really friendly didnt rate spiros much thought he was quite miserable apart from that its a great place to stay its like any holiday really you make the most of it just enjoy it because your back in work sooner than you know it :( also before i go you can only book this apartment by cosmos travel next year the email address we got given is [email protected] ENJOY ;p"

"Just got back from holidaying here. The place was great and the kids really enjoyed it and everyone was really friendly - both staff and other holiday makers. Only drawback was we were on the ground floor and the people above made loads of noise in the apartments above moving furniture in the middle of the night but we complained after 2 nights of little sleep and it was sorted out. Think it was just some people being really inconsiderate when they arrived. Other than this we all had a great time. The beach was pebbley but if you walk along for about 20 minutes you come to a sandy beach."

well worth staying here
"This was our first holiday abroad in 4 years - myself and 2 sons aged 17 & 21. The Matoula was recommended by a friend who had been before. Dont want to repeat the good points other reviewers have made, but agree with them all.Definately get the a/c as it is still very hot during the night We would also recommend the Orpheus bar as we went there 3 times. If you want to book any outings go to the travel agent(?) on the main road - turn right from the apartment road and about 200 yards down, we booked 3 excursions through him, much cheaper than the reps, very friendly and gave us some good advice. Would recommend the Corfu by boat evening trip, cost us about 50 euros including return bus to Kassiopi, left about 4pm and got back 11.30pm. Cant finish without mentioning Spiros and Nicos - both brillant, very freiendly and polite."

"Just returned from 2 weeks at the Matoula. We stayed in a bottom floor studio appartment, It was very spacios and perfect for me, my husband and our 3 year old. The room was spotless and the cleaners came every day appart from sundays, towels changed twice a week Free safety deposit box in the room too! The kitchen was small but what we needed,we didnt use it to cook as we went out, but it had an electric kettle, 2 electric rings, a good fridge and all the equiptment needed. The bathroom was also clean and even had a shower cubicle not common in greece! plenty of hot water at all times of the day! The reception was good to, open in morning and again in afternoon, closed sundays, had a book libary, changed money, phone cards and phone 4 euros, air conditioning at 5 euro per night or 10 for 2 bed appartments. On day of departure they offered a luggage room and complementory shower room. The pool area is fabulous, the gardens and pool is so well looked after, plenty of sunbeds around the large pool, free but 2 euros if you want a cussion, a jaquizzi that was 1 euro for 20 mins and a great shallow kids pool with loungers too. The pool bar was great too, serving lots of choices of food, full english 4.50 euros!! A large mythos was 2 euros! Spiros was so funny and loved the kids and Dean and Dawn helped make our holiday! The appartments were in a great location, turn right and 5 mins into the town that had everything you needed, cashpoints, supermarkets, shops, doctors and chemists plus lots of great tavernas. Turn left and 5 mins to the beach, this was almost all pebbles but the sea was lovely and warm, fab taverna's including woodey's, faro's and our favourite maistro. If you want a sandy beach then from the beach front walk left and follow the road for 15 mins and you come to the next resort Roda, great for a change and sand and safe waters. There was a good local bus that we used to get to kassiopi 5.70 euros for all 3 of us and taxis to either sidari or kassiopi were 16 euro each way. only down sides and no fault of anyones was the 2 hour coach trip from the airport, although the views are stunning! and the mosquieto's, we used our repelants and plug in's and still got bitten :( but hey ho appart from that perfect :)))"

"Fine size apartment, but you need the AC which @ 3oEuros for the week was not that bad. Friendly staff and easy access to all amenieties. Bakers at the top of the road was amazing for breakfast materials. Only drawback was no late check out as we had a very late pick up. So, we rented another apartment for the day around the corner (Babis Apartments);out of gate turn left towards beach and turn right at the gift shop on your right at the corner and on your right. 5o Euros for a spacious apartment with free Sky TV and AC thrown in for the day, whcih made leaving the holiday a lot les hassle. Pity about some of the undesirables who infected the pool at the Matoula on the last two days, who were not a glowing testimony to the free enterance to the pool for non residents offered by Matoula."

stay away if you're miserable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"If you want a cheap holiday with plenty of sun,a good pool, clean appts, beach in easy walking distance, good value food and friendly people then you can't go wrong with Matoula or Acharavi. And a massive huge big up for Akis & Rena at Woodys. For less than £500 a head for 14 days you can't go wrong unless your one of those people that are not only tight but god damn miserable,if you want top notch,PAY FOR IT and then you've got good reason to moan if it is not up to your exacting high standards. Yes there are plenty of faults with the whole resort if thats how you want to spend your hard earned holiday searching for,get a life and enjoy yourselves doing a lazy 14 days in the sun. ps Hire out a boat at Sam's it is great, and if you still feel you have'nt had value for money you can chuck yourself overboard."

2 out of 10
"My fiancee and I spent a week at the Matoula Apartments on the ground floor. This was a mixed experience flawed by the quality of the apartment and the service of the staff. Negative Towel Incident: Be aware that self-catering will only have 1 towel change per week even though it states there are 2 changes. We arrived on the Friday and left the next Friday so expected new towels twice in addition to the first towels supplied. They only supply the first set, then one new set 3 days later. So the 2 changes stated includes the first set. When I asked politely to the receptionist that I wanted a new set of towels I received a very negative, unfriendly response that I would not get new towels until the next day. I called the First Choice phoneline to complain who also had no luck in getting any new towels out of the receptionist. There was no flexibility at all to get a new set of towels one day before the scheduled change. This I found strange. I also offered to pay for new towels but could not even bribe them to give me new ones! The First Choice phoneline rep told me that she was told that the towels were locked up and could not be accessed by the receptionist. Fridge: The fridge sounded like a small microlight ready to take off at 2am, 4am and 6am. Beds: If you are looking for an apartment with doublebeds don't go for the studio. These are two separate beds and when booking it does not give an option for a doublebed. Watch out that the maid will separate the beds each day after being put together! Also don't go to Matoula if you want a comfy bed. The mattresses are rock hard. Harder than a rock. The hardest bed that I have experienced in all my life. Positive Cats: There were three stray cats that we fed milk and cat biscuits that were very friendly and lovely. Pool: The pool was clean and quite good. "

Well worth a stay
"We've been to Matoula twice now and really enjoyed both stays. The brochure says you're 350m from the beach but you're much closer than that. Our room looked out over some open land and then across to the seafront with good gaps on the blue sea! The appartments are clean, good pool with grassy area. A few improvements have happened since our last visit. All rooms have their own safety deposit box with programmable code (free) and you can order breakfast at a decent price delivered to your rooms. Staff are friendly. There are only two blocks and it all feels relaxed and easy. The pool bar is great if you want a sort of 'England in Greece' feel. We ate our lunches there, cheap and chearful. Prices aren't as cheap as they used to be but Acharavi certainly has something real about it...good for a relaxing break. Definatley recommend Matoula"
